I have to admit I'm a bit torn on the Pokémon vote. On one hand, Espurr has the really interesting plot hooks and Akira vibes, but on the other I just really like Shuppet more than Espurr as a species and I feel like securing a companion for Roland that will also last as long as he will for after we one day die is important.

Roland suddenly headbutts you. Before you could pull back, their two little arms grab your face and hold you in place. There the two of you were, forehead to forehead, Roland trying to tell you something. It's calming, in a way. "...Thanks."
Roland is such a good little bean. I love him.
"You made Miss Mary sad! I'll never forgive you!"
I saw this coming and still laughed like a loon. Ostia is adorable. Argy was also unexpectedly cute this update. I didn't realize they were a tsundere, but I am very much a fan.

fellas is it gay to become obsessed with catching up to someone, comparing them in beauty and glory to the sun?
Mary is hella gay. It just slips casually into her narration all the time. Her thoughts on Erika's stares. Her very first thought when meeting Mela was to admire the gap moe. She is cultured. Her offense is strong, her defense (lol) impregnable. The subtext is absolutely not coincidental. Good look getting her to notice it though.

[X] An Espurr

Espurr was only ever a little behind Shuppet in my rankings, and the backstory speaks to me a lot more. Kind of wish Shuppet's spoke to me a bit more, but... Mariana already has a baby ghost on her team.

I also like the eventual contrast that we'd continue building with a female Espurr on the team, between Mariana being all nice and nurturing and meek and nervous, but both her battling style and her Pokemon being all offense all the time.

We can just solo with Roland in the first gym. Mariana has a high-tier SKLL stat, Roland is already at 1-badge level. It's totally possible, and it'd be good for Mariana's self-esteem too. And yeah, Andosin pride! Rock that deel.

[X] An Alolan Rattata

Free Dark type. We need one of those. Mariana is too young to be a teen mom. Extra dangerous Espurr? No thanks, I'm good.

I argued for the hit-n-run style before, and Will-o-Wisp is an incredible move both for reducing offense and for chipping away at people while playing keep away w/the Dreepy line's signature speed. I debated on the outfit, and while maybe Mary could use the boost from feeling like she's fitting in, I think long-term it'll be better if she can learn to be proud of who she is. Finally, I have to give in to Espurr, despite Mega Banette's awesome design and the fact that it'll give Roland a companion.

There's other ghost types in Paldea like Annihilape (for Fighting representation), Sinistea (because I like them), Gholdengo (probably by accident collecting the coins needed), or even more exotic options like Froslass, Spiritomb, or Mimikyu though we're not likely to find any of them. Gengar for traditionalists plus a Mega Evolution, although the trade evolution might be tricky.

EDIT: Just realized another potential benefit of the Espurr, once our Bond is high enough so she begins to trust us and/or as she gains more proficiency she'll be able to act as an increasingly seamless translator for the rest of our pokemon enabling directly two-way communication with our team.

Not directly relevant at the moment but thinking about it, we might really ant to try for first gym during FE 1, We just got a whole complex around Nemona's progress and she reaches champion tier by the end of the first year, assuming the timeline survives first contact with the quest(unlikely) we should expect her to be t curve or a little faster than the maximum alloted time in a year to hit all 8, so we might really want to put our high Skill into battling swag for at least the first field excursion.
I think it probably also fits her character to get a little intense abt training at least in the immediate aftermath, and im certain Roland's competitiveness wouldn't mind the chance to try and catch up to Sunny.

"Second! We're gonna be doing this once a month, during the first Friday that isn't a Field Exercise week. It's a great way to keep you kids sharp! Once you get stronger, one of the hardest things to get as a trainer are actual challenges that push you to grow and get better! As a friend likes to say 'Iron sharpens Iron'." Leaf put on a sweetly saccharine voice as she said that quote.
Ok Dread Empire of Praes.

Not sure what to pick for Pokemon. Bear in mind we can't challenge the first gym until we have two pokemon, so if we pick Espurr we'll need to look for a third pokemon if we want to do a gym in FE1.
I'm pretty sure we'll be able to push Roland to second badge level by the time the first Field Exercise comes around. Considering first badge level gym battles are just to check that we have a pulse and somehow communicate with our pokemon, I think a second badge level Roland can manage to solo it, nevermind the fact that our SKILL is so high, and has a good chance of rising to 13 in that time.

Not if you say "no homo"
Depends if they (the obsessor) are oblivious to infatuation from others.
Red's journey through Kanto must've Been very frustrating for his rival.

OOC stuff but Legendaries are split into two for the purposes of this quest
1. Actual Divinity. You'll get melted if you even try.
2. Demi-gods. Theoretically possible. Has happened before. Not with Pokeballs though.
Would the Ruins Wuartet count as Actual Divinity or Demi-gods? Because as much as I want to conquer one for our team eventually in the far future, I'd be willing to settle for a Paradox pokemon and/or a Spiritomb.

.....

Anyways, the vote!

[X] An Espurr

Espurr v Shuppet: Before update I was definitely going for Shuppet, but back then I didn't know Espurr was less given a cool ability and more Tiny Mewtwo. I'm willing to invest the time necessary to get it to trust us and be used in more situations. If we could get it to Bond 3 for our first gym battle that would be amazing. Even using the magical girl cat in our second gym battle instead would be fine.

Plus, a psychic type is needed for sealing the Ruins Quartet, Espurr here has kickass levels of variety in its arsenal, and as a utility and defensive pokemon a psychic type is king. It can help us communicate with our team members far easier with psychic communication, it can teleport us around Paldea once we train it to teleport (this also helps with battles), and when we inevitably get in a fight with less scrupulous or honourable foes wouldn't you rather have a psychic barrier between you the comparatively squishy trainer and an assassin pokemon?

Buying clothes: Mental health is important! Doing Ranger missions means we have disposable income at the read. This good of a deal, half-off, is probably the best time to get more clothes too.

Teach It: Burn is a fantastic status condition to spread around at will, it damages our enemies, it makes their physical attacks weaker, and once we get Hex it synergizes into one of the most powerful (non-custom) ghost attacks on the planet.

Not to mention whatever custom moves we can create with it. Afterburners, shields, usurping flames and transmuting them into more Will-o-Wisps, using them as physical weapons like a cloak. Whatever.

Given their lore of being ancient treasures that came to life as pokemon, I'd guess demi-god.

Actual Divinity would be stuff like Groudon, Dialga, or Xerneas.

The Espurr has the most interesting plot thread I think. That and there's a certain utility to having a small, powerful Pokemon that can follow you basically anywhere.

Barriers son! They protect us in response to pokemon-on-human violence!

A psychic is the ultimate utility pick, shields, teleportation, and communications. The fact this is also an offensive powerhouse with an expanded move pool is just the cherry on top.

Ok Dread Empire of Praes.
Behold! The Dread Empress:
Truly terrifying.

More fun Jasmine facts: She's a possible opponent in D/P/P contests. Two of the four categories she can appear in are Beauty and Cute Contests.

She uses a Steelix.

Really, at 570 BST they should be grateful to even be called demigods.

Back in my day Legendary Pokémon meant 600 580 at minimum! None of these Tapu's or Treasures of Ruin bringing shame to the title!

No, I'm not going to consider how much better their abilities might be than Pressure. And wow, I've thought the legendary trios had 600 bst for years and never noticed they've had 580.

Preach. I'm sad to miss out on Prankster but she's still going to have the double screens and the offensive power more than makes up for it.

Something else to consider is that when you aren't bound by game mechanics, there's a lot of creative things you can do with barriers.

Need to climb up a cliff when exploring the world and don't have a flier to ride? Just use barriers as a sequence of floating platforms to climb up. Same thing can apply to crossing a lake or river.

And if your barriers are strong enough, you can always use one as a blunt weapon in battle. Getting a wall slammed into your face hurts.

Still wish we could vote None, but it's pretty obvious what will win. I don't have much opinion on the rest so I'll just watch.

Admittedly, that's kinda what killed it for me. Espurr was fine... Until the story was bent over it's knees to make the Espurr super speshul awesome far and beyond the other options available to us.

I believe Espurr is fine, if by getting them we will have to face foes with similar strengths as a direct result. If they come from a secret research lab, we better end up fighting them as they come after us with their own stronger experimented on Pokemon.

I'm more interested in the lore connections than the power, tbh. All three had lore connections, I just find this particular flavor of Team Rocket-ass bullshit more interesting than the other ones.
