Bound to Earth: A CK2 Earthbound Quest in an 8-bit Dystopia

OK, wound aside that worked out well. My plan is to heal up and then go on the offensive, with Buzz Buzz shielding to get him to waste the last of his PP.

"PK BEAM Ω!"

Striking the pose a spiraling ray erupted from the Starman's visor.

The brilliant orange beam cut through the brush.

Illuminating the forest, the sky, and everything along it's path for one blinding instant.

Through the branch the L̵̬̿̄O̶̢͒Ȕ̴̥D̷͙͍̂̌ ̸͉̮̾͛M̴͖͈̾O̷̭͘Ǔ̷͔́T̶̤͆͝H̷̞̍̄E̴̠͔͂D̴͍̂ ̴̮͎̎A̶̘͐N̸̯͂Ỉ̶̼M̶̻̈́A̵̛̝̺͐L̷͖͌̑ was seated on.

Through the tree behind it.

Through the mountains in the distance.

The truck sized blast rapidly narrowed the farther it went from it's point of origin.

Shrinking until it was the width of a length of thread before disappearing all together.

There was no fire.

No meaningful heat.

Everything the beam touched simply disintegrated.

Even the air itself, along the path of the beam, simply ceased to exist.

The abrupt filling of a small vacuum caused an abrupt 'BANG' to ring out.

Blowing back the leaves obscuring the forest in front of the Starman. Scattering a thick haze of dust into the air, the remains of all that which was hit by the beam.

Staring into the exposed section of the forest, moonlight lit the scene.

Both through the overhead canopy and the large hole bored clean through the forest.
This reminded me of Blame's gravitational beam emitter. Just a stupidly long fuck-you beam with explosive aftershock. Upper bound psychic powers are scary, with huge risk of collateral damage, and this isn't even the peak.

"Metal bastard is playing is safe, staying behind his goons. He seems intent on keeping them in front of him while he blasts us with-"
is safe=>it safe
The upper halves of their 'bodies', everything about the 'shoulders' turned to dust. Their steel bodies scattering as they hit the ground.

Letting go of the branch you hit the ground and draw your bet, staring down the Starman.

Castle Bound in Shadows
Ryoma Sakamoto

You would expect a dark dingy cell in a haunted castle to be an uncomfortable place that kept its occupant on edge. Normally you would be right.

Ryoma wasn't what you could call a normal person

Instead, he lounged in the crappy bed like he owned the place, listening to the bells. He had to save his strength for later. For Ode Lou…

How did things get so twisted? Sure, they were in the Outlands and had to deal with a lack of resources and contact with the outside world. The City was a distant blip to them, but they lived as best they could guided by the knowledge of their ancestors from Japan.

Perhaps that's where it started though. There were arguments and debates over which time, which form, and what structure they should take. Arguments turned to violence.

Eventually, it led to this, a structure similar to the late Edo period. Shogun and Daimyo enforced their rule through soldiers and violence. Distance maintained from all other nations under the belief it was safer for them. Isolationism.

Ryoma thought that was stupid. You were supposed to learn from the past, take lessons, and better yourself with the knowledge gained. Instead, they were using an old outdated system that their forefathers cooked up.

Of course, speaking out against them was a wee bit dangerous. Which landed him here. Ironically a position similar to his namesake during the Bakumatsu period.

Now that was one piece of heritage he was willing to keep.

He perked up as he heard the door to the jail open. Either the guards were bringing him a new cellmate, or his shinobi rescuer had arrived. He was hoping for someone to spring him before midnight, otherwise he'd have to break out himself.

He didn't expect to see the guards dragging a little girl into the jail.

"Let go!" The girl thrashed in the guard's grip, the oversized bracelets she wore jungling as she struggled. Before she could break the guard's grip they tossed her into a nearby cell and shut the door.

"Be thankful that we're feeling merciful girl. Lord Oude wouldn't mind a bit if we spilled your guts out!" Despite his bold words, the guard's hands were slack and away from his weapon. No way he would follow through.

The girl stood up and dusted herself off. Her clothes were definitely foreign, a flowing green shirt, blue skirt, black leggings, and leather boots that made him assume she was dressed for travel. Not from here.

If the girl was worried about the threat she didn't show it. The guards locked the door and then left.

Ryoma waited until the guards were gone before speaking. "Ode Iou sure knows how to treat guests doesn't he?"

"He certainly does…" The girl looked at him suspiciously, fiddling with the bracelets around her wrist.

"No need to glare at me so harshly. We're in the same boat, prisoners of a cruel man poised to take over the region." Despite the grim subject matter, Ryoma kept his tone light. No need to be all doom and gloom right now.

"Would it ease your concerns if I introduced myself? My name is Ryoma Sakamoto." Ryoma bowed politely, though the effect was ruined slightly by the metal prison door in front of him.

She seemed to consider his greeting before relaxing slightly. "That's a very strange name… You'll have to forgive my caution. My name is Carrie Fernandez."

"From my perspective, your name is the strange one." Ryoma shot back. "You're not from around here are you?"

"I'm not," Carrie confirmed, crossing her arms. "I've heard rumors about this castle. That creatures of darkness haunt it, at the behest of an evil man. Are these rumors true?"

Ryoma paused for a moment. He knew the rumors, and now that he'd been in the castle long enough he knew the truth.

"Well… Yes." Ryoma sobered a little. "That about sums it up. I'm not a big believer in the supernatural but… I can think of no other way to explain Ode Iou's rise. The guards speak of spirits that walk the hall, and demons held in check at certain parts of the castle."

"I see." The Carrie closed her eyes, seemingly deep in thought. They both solemnly considered the implications.

Before either of them could speak again, a bell rang. "That would indicate… 11:00 I believe. One hour until midnight."

"Midnight… The foulest of rituals are often performed at midnight." Carrie sounded oddly sagelike for such a young girl. Something that made Ryoma quirk an eyebrow.

"Well, nothing we can do about it stuck in this cell." Ryoma resumed lounging. He planned on waiting a bit longer. The puppeteer didn't know that Ryoma was armed. When he came back around, an ambush should be easy enough…

"True. Which is why I'll be leaving." Carrie said it as if the cell door in front of her was a minor inconvenience instead of an impassable barrier.

She cast a massive ball of light from her hand, destroying the metal door in a single shot.

Ryoma gaped like a fish as the tiny slip of a girl walked over the shattered remains of the door. "You let them capture you, didn't you? If you wanted you could have blown those guards away."

"Indeed. But those were just men, not monsters. No reason to deny them a chance to repent." Carrie walked closer to Ryoma's cell. "You seem like a decent sort, and I take it you have a similar goal to me. Stand back and I'll open the door for you."

Ryoma's mind was moving too slowly, he was still shocked at the casual display of magical strength the girl showed. He acted a moment too soon. "Wait!"

Carrie stepped on the trapdoor in front of his cell, letting out a scream of surprise as she plummeted dozens of feet to the pit dug under the castle.

He ran his hand through his hair, trying to think about what to do. He was planning to wait and break out on his own unless a shinobi came to save him in which case he would follow their lead. The girl wasn't a shinobi and wasn't here for him, but they shared the same goal of taking down Ode Lou…

Making up his mind, Ryoma retrieved his hidden pistol from its hiding place and shot the lock on the prison door. He stepped onto the trapdoor, and let himself fall into the pit.

Carrie Fernandez

Carrie groaned, pushing herself to her feet and dusting herself off. She was standing in what could only charitably be described as a graveyard. Bones and glowing whisps were floating around her. Spirits perhaps?

It was dark and gloomy, the ceiling of the graveyard being the same floor that she walked across to get to the prison. Now that she was below the floor she could see the mechanism that dropped her, but from above the floor, there was nothing to reveal its presence.

A moment later the man from before dropped down beside her, a sword in one hand and a gun in the other. "Sorry about that. The people here were a bit paranoid about me getting out."

Carrie shook her head, fighting down annoyance. "It's my fault for rushing ahead. At the very least this makes me think my suspicions are correct. There's evil magic here."

As if summoned by her words, a chuckle rolled over the room. Ryoma quickly lowered a hand to his waist while Carrie once again put a hand on her bracelet.

A strange chant echoed as from the darkness rose a man adorned with blue flames. Long flowing blonde hair and a pretty boy face that clashed with the cruel smirk adorning his features. "Where do you think you're going? I'm afraid I'll have to hold you here until Master has time to deal with you."

"So, you're one of his servants then?" Carrie asked, a steely expression on her face.

The man chuckled and spread his arms. "One of his greatest and most loyal. His right-hand man you might say. I am Amakusa Shiro Tokisada"

"Really?" Carrie looked him up and down. He was capable of some magic, but she wasn't particularly impressed. "Well tell your master that we have some unfinished business."

"Hah! Do you think my master cares a whit about some little girl? You're nothing to him and you're nothing to me."

"Nothing? I defeated Dracula before and I'll defeat Dracula again!" Carrie declared.

"...Dracula?" Ryoma asked. "The owner of this castle is Ode Iou."

"It's probably just an alias. Dracula has been known to use them before."

"I hate to break it to you little girl, but the Ronin over there is right. Ode Iou is my master, the one who summoned me. I've never heard of this Dracula fellow." Amakusa said.

"What? B-but. He's Dracula! Dark Lord, Vampire King, the greatest Dark Sorcerer of all time! Who else could create a cursed castle like this?" Carrie asked.

Ganon, The Dragonlord, Odio, Dark Matter, Myria, Deathevan, Ashtar, and a few dozen other evil entities all felt as if someone were talking about them.

They should probably kill that person.

Ryoma and Amakusa both burst out laughing

"Whatever! One Dark Lord is just as bad as another. It doesn't matter if it's Dracula or not!" Carrie charged an energy ball in her hand.

"Hate to disappoint you girl, but I'm immortal! You can't kill me!" To demonstrate Amakusa opened his arms wide, revealing his exposed chest (what was it with these weird chest-baring clothes everyone wore?)

Carrie chucked the energy ball at him. The instant it made contact he shouted and disappeared, seeming destroyed by the blast.

A sigil appeared where he was standing, and all the blue flames in the room converged on it. Once all of them gathered there was a flash, and he was standing there. Completely unharmed.

"As you can see I wasn't bluffing. You're stuck here forever!" Amakusa laughed, running a hand through his immaculately groomed hair "Or at least until the master comes to finish the job."

"Really? Because it looked to me like your 'immortality' is dependant on these souls." Carrie hurled another energy ball at one of the blue flames around the room, extinguishing it.

Ryoma slashed one of them with a sword. Also extinguishing it. The two of them locked eyes and nodded.

"Wait, wait! Those are real souls you're destroying there!" Amakusa protested as the two of them destroyed soul after soul. After a short minute, the room was devoid of blue flames.

"Y-you cannot defeat me! I am immortal!" Amakusa protested. "Cease! Repent!"

"I think you're the one who needs to repent." Carrie pulled out a small flask from her pocket and threw it at the man. The glass hit the ground beneath his feet and shattered.

Holy Water.

This time Amakusa screamed as the holy water consumed him, rapidly burning his false flesh. "YoU! I'lL KiLL YoU!"

The demon made it a mere two steps before Ryoma cut him in half with a single slash of his sword. As he disappeared, the magic circle flickered before vanishing as well.

Carrie slowly let out a sigh. "I can't believe I came here chasing Dracula… and there's just another unrelated threat here instead."

"Are you going to back out? Now that you know your quarry isn't here I mean." Ryoma asked.

"... No. I meant what I said earlier. Ode Iou is consorting with demons, he needs to be put down."

Ryoma laughed, a deep full belly laugh that echoed throughout the entire chamber. "Sorry! It's just funny to hear that coming from a kid like you. Well said! Let's mosey then Fernandez."

"You can't just invite yourself along!" Carrie protested.

"Why not? I know the passwords, I know the layout, and I know where the trapmaker is. Without me, you'll get lost, or get caught by all the traps around the castle. Seems like letting me tag along is your best bet."

"Fine! But you better not slow me down!" Carrie huffs as Ryoma chuckles again. She can't help but find herself wondering if Reinhardt is having better luck

Notes: The list of "Dark Lords" references Legend of Zelda, Dragon Quest, Live a Live, Kirby, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, and Ninja Gaiden I probably could have made the list longer. There are a lot of evil entities tooling around out there.

Also, believe it or not, Castlevania 64 is the very first Castlevania game I played. Not because I own it, just because I played it at a friend's house. I got clapped by the giant skeleton you fight like, 5 minutes into the game.

I had to come up with a reason for the Japan chapter to take place in this world. Because, unlike the other chapters of LAL, this one takes place in a specific period. The end of the Edo Period and the Bakumatsu. Having history repeat itself due to a mostly Japanese civilization springing up in the outlands is the best I got.

I may or may not have a "sequel" detailing Reinhardt and Oboromaru repeatedly bumping into each other throughout the castle

... I'm not saying it's the best idea. But there's a non zero chance we just maul them

Right now, I'm concerned we may be on a time limit now due to the forest fire, only so much time until CD begins to choke on the smoke or has burning wood fall on her. We may need to end this sooner than later unless we can relocate again.

lot of people seem to be leaning towards giving PSI punk a try, and if it's boosted now may be the best opportunity, so maybe something like the following?
[X] plan: Anime Powerup Sequence
-[X] CD: Breath Deep, Reach Deep…and Attack! (2 Actions)
-[X] Buzz Buzz: Attack the Starman JägeR! (1 Action)
-[X] Buzz Buzz: Try to Knock Burning Debris Onto Enemies (1 Action)

Keep Starman occupied whilst CD charges and provide a distraction if things go poorly. fire isn't too useful against metal, but distracting them is the priority and I don't think calling out to CD will help much if they're trying to focus

If anyone has any ideas for something more defensive feel free to bring them up. right now a physical attack from the Starman is the thing to keep an eye out for, and I think they're a higher priority than the lampost currently. if buzz buzz can get in and out then they should be fine with the remainder of their shield, PSI warrior reinforcement and speed+small size

If PSI punk fails, we'd probably want to give up on it for the fight and if still conscious heal/evade right away next turn, there should be enough juice for that and hopefully buzz buzz will be in a good enough position to handle the rest. aggro seems firmly on CD at the moment

(possible alternate plans I'm considering: maybe have buzz buzz directly attack both? if you think debris attacks are bad)

While it's not immediately relevant, we should make note of the fact that no matter how the rest of this fight goes, people are going to notice something happened.

good call! I'd definitely aim to get out of the way if we're in any state to after this fight is over, and probably stash any starman corpse that can be carried. (it's not *nice* to anticipate being beaten up any worse but it's something to bear in mind)

Hmm. Full offense, or CD offense with Buzz shielding? Because we currently have no shields up, but that won't matter if we kill then fast enough.

good news, buzz buzz still has a shield :)
iirc last round the Starman tried to take it down with PSI FIRE Σ but they aimed in the air and Buzz Buzz came in from below so the attack was wasted
(not sure about Cass, the attack they tanked was physical so wouldn't impact any barriers, may or may not still be up after that PSI FIRE Σ from round one)

This is true. I will say the PK Beam and the laser it used when it showed up initially are not the same. And PSI Shield works on energy weapons/attacks alongside PSI attacks.
noticed that given that Beam Omega is a disintegration attack whilst the earlier beam left the asphalt molten.

I'm gonna assume that most of the PSI attacks are stronger than the beam is though? Or at least have more scalable power?

Also voting

Don't want to risk debris given the mention that failing the roll could cause CD to get hit. BB's traits means his Martial is effectively 35, now's the time for him to go all out if any.

[X] Plan: Plan B

I'm favoring the idea of getting back up to full health and taking out the other lamp so we can both focus on the Starman next turn. Save the dramatic finisher for when there are fewer potential problems, you know?
