Bound to Earth: A CK2 Earthbound Quest in an 8-bit Dystopia

Crosswire did we receive the mayors papers before getting jumped by the star man
Yes. The Enemy Interrupt has more or less happened at the very end of this turn/month. So everything that happened on Turn 3 happened sometime prior to this fight.

Though the papers are pretty useless given you're in active combat, unless your plan is to hold out until you can somehow send it in the mail. Which is not a realistic course of action given the opposition.

[X] Plan: Awaken Potential
-[X] Breath Deep, Reach Deep…and Attack! (2 Actions)
-[X] Renew Renew PSI Shield Σ (2 Actions)

Yeah, I know this plan is barebones as hell. But we have a psychic bomb on our hands, of course, I want to use it!

[X] Plan: Straight To The Point!

Good update. That mayors house thing will probably come in clutch later.

Also we have money to bribe Porky now - he has potential and maybe with the power of friendship and vandalism he can become a force for kinda of good instead of the worst person ever

THERE'S A STARMAN, WAITING IN THE SKY!
HE'D LIKE TO COME AND BEAT US
BUT I THINK WE'D BLOW HIS MIND

[X] PLAN: BAMBOOZLE
-[X] Antagonize the Starman into attacking their allies (1 Action)
-[X] Find Something of Use (1 Action)
-[X] Renew PSI Shield Σ (2 Actions)

Kinda curious how you'll implement FF7 into the setting considering the whole Black Materia fiasco, unless you're setting it before the events of the game.
It is pretty customary to do that actually. Looking through the 8BD doc, it's pretty clear most entries are set before the game would occur. Dr. Light's working on Mega Man, Sonic's just starting his anti-Robotnik campaign, Mario's plumbing the depths and may or may not have even seen Bowser, ETC.

Honestly, I think that's a huge advantage.

Allows prospective readers to create their own spins on how to integrate the stories into the setting.

I agree. The setting should be the setup for a lot of adventures and provide a ton of negative possibility space for all sorts of campaigns, adventures, and possibilities. Rather then being any definitive end point to any particular game or adventure.

By just having Shinra in the setting, but not elaborating on it too much or making it as 'big' as it was in FF7 proper, you leave people interested in that aspect with the opportunity to expand on them or overlook them for other stuff.

8-Bit Dystopia's greatest strength in my opinion is it's strong theme, the really clever way things are meshed together and adapted, and the possible interactions between different characters and settings. It's a wonderful toybox where a lot can happen while still presenting a concrete setting and set of rules to work within the boundaries of.

Alright, let's go.

Vandalize New Signs (Martial)

1d100 = 52+16 = 68
DC: 15/40/65
[TIER 3 SUCCESS!]
...
[The OPFs Fresh Breeze Movement has been set back!]
[Your efforts & sentiments towards the police are recognized by the youth in town, the Sharks included.]
I'm going to love all the reduced DC's in the future, plus the rep itself will be nice, now that we've done something notable for the first time, and not just ditching school, occasionally beating people up, and other typical delinquent things.

Speak to your Neighbor (Diplomacy)

1d100= 12 + 7 = 19
DC: ???
[...]
Yet, something he said sticks in his brain as you wander through your dark home and make your way back into your own room.

Middle of the night.

Coming out of nowhere.

Strange request.

You're reminded of how Buzz Buzz showed up to you. Minus the window entry and world shattering revelations of course.

"The only person to ask him to help huh?" You mutter to yourself as you flop down into your mess of a bed, drifting off to sleep...
DC: 15
PORKY HAS JOINED YOUR PARTY!
I can't (I totally can) believe that the DC for our neighbour Porky here is so low. It's not like he's basically just a fatter version of CD or anything, no... would it be nice to have had a high roll here? Yes, but a foot in the door is good enough for now, we can raise his opinion later.

Try to Heal People for Money (Stewardship)

1d100 = 16 +10 = 26
[Tier 1 Success]
DC: 20/40/80
...
100 dollars sucked to lose, but compared to losing 7000? It was nothing short of a miracle.

"...Oh fuck they said a god." The part-time baker stopped in the middle of the rainswept sidewalk, staring into the middle distance.

"Does that mean there are multiple gods? Can I heal people if I worship them? Which gods exist and which gods don't? I remember hearing something about some Hellenistic stuff from that weird lady when I was little - Do the Hellenistic gods have a hell? Will I go to hell if I don't worship them? Can I send my boss to hell?"

Existential horror faded into intrigue as the man walked down the sidewalk. His fears of homelessness and scurvy replaced with restored physical health and a newfound interest in theology...

With the setting of the sun you toss your earnings into your bag, bundles of loose bills looking up at you before you close it.

It was another long, frustrating day.

Not many people had come, certainly not as many as you hoped. And the ones that did always had the most annoying questions or complaints.

After a day you suddenly realized this is what retail workers had to put up with every day, with just slightly less bleeding and crying.

Given there was only a single sign and word of mouth to point people in the right direction, it made sense there wasn't a huge turn out.

Still, the people who did show up certainly paid up.

Even by asking a fraction of what the hospital asked for, you made a decent chunk of cash. And most walked out happy, or at least slightly less miserable.

You don't know if how you answered people's questions really mattered. Does it matter what people think as long as they don't know your real name, you get money, and people get their bones popped back into place?

"I wonder if I can get one of those mail-in doctorates like that plumber guy I heard about..."

[You receive +2 Funds!]
Potentially dangerous, but at least we got some money out of it! Hopefully a potential resurgence in theology in a place with an increased Dreamlands presence won't be that bad.

Intrigue Break into the Mayor's House (Intrigue) [Buzz Buzz]

1d100 = 76 +3 +14+(Loyalty Bonus = 1.4 rounded down to 1) (The3rdCorinthian's 400 EXP) +4 (Known Paradox's 100 EXP) +1 = 99
DC: 30/60/90
[SMAAAASH SUCCESS!]
...
Just the sheer amount of money you suddenly find yourself with is overwhelming, but satisfying. And the pre-stamped, pre-signed decree document will definitely give you some options going forward.

[Your bond with Buzz Buzz deepens, Buzz Buzz's opinion of you increases by +5]
[You gain +6 Funds]
[You gain the "Prefilled Mayoral Paperwork" item!]
First off, I'll accept any thanks you guys have, no biggie.

Secondly, the +6 Funds (on top of the +2 from earlier) will be great for bribing people and maybe a nice boost to our starting capital when enter the organization stage if we can make it last.

Thirdly, the real important item here is the Prefilled Mayoral Paperwork. I don't even know what exactly we can do with it but I know it'll be big, no matter what we do with it.

Help Your Siblings Study (Learning)

1d100= 76+7 = 83
DC: 15/20
[2nd Tier Success!]
...
[Kart and Floppy's Learning has increased significantly! Your bond with them is preserved and deepens]
[Your learning increases by +1!]
[You've temporarily contracted the enthusiasm of your siblings. On Turn 4 you will be able to roll one Faction Action of your choice with advantage!]
I wonder how big a Learning stat Kart and Floppy have? If this goes on long enough maybe they'll be old enough for us to accept them coming in and helping! If so, investing turns in raising their stats could be big down the line. The small increase to our Learning is nice too. Every step counts.

The rolling with Advantage is a great boonz we have any number of difficult DC's to hit.

(Buzz-Buzz) Try to Lay Low

1d100 = 2
The downside to this turn. But hey! It wasn't a crit.

Hahaha. No. Please, don't compare us to that guy. Judging by the games, that guy's a cowardly jerkass that makes CD look like a model citizen. Thankfully, we got to him early, and maybe help set him on the right path, but our girl has a heart of gold underneath it all, Porky, at this point...Pyrite, maybe.

Porky is 100% gonna start/join a cult. Whether its the Great Devourer, Medusa, or Giygas is yet to be seen.

I'd like to remind everyone that if you refuse to help Porky look for Picky at the beginning of Earthbound, he threatens to "say something that will cut you like a knife" Which is either him indirectly threatening to stab you, or directly threatening to say something so cruel that it hurts you.

Even before Giygas got his psychic mits on Porky, he was a bit of a prick. Although Giygas certainly made him worse.

Heh. Fair, but you get my point. Basically, Porky isn't much like CD. Sure, he's a troublemaker, rude, and generally a bit of a jerk, but, unlike CD, he's a full-on coward without a shred of altruism. The first thing he does in the game is ditch his younger brother in the night and proceed to go bug Ness for help with finding him so that he won't get disciplined, and spends every battle he's in cowering behind Ness, when even Picky at least TRIES to help, even if it's not successful. He refuses to fight Ness directly for the rest of the game, and, even when he has Giygas backing him up in the final boss, he bails after taking a few hits. He's a COWARD. And, say what you will about CD, that ain't her. Thankfully, we got to him early, when he's still just a standard jerk and not yet the utterly loathsome monster he'll become, but it's gonna take some time to whip this fatso into someone useful.

Hey, so long as it's a Cult that isn't supporting Giygas and won't end the world any faster than Giygas, I say he can go ahead. In fact, if he focused on the Great Devourer, that'd be ideal, and also hilarious.
"I find him relateable...What?"

(Sorry, sorry, i'll cool it with the fat jokes.)

Also, I have no clue about how the Great Devourer will turn out, but it would kinda funny if he is just, like, Kirby, with the personality of...Kirby. But as an eldritch horror.

"At last, our master has returned. Speak, oh lord!"

Honestly, like half of my George omake was written with the idea of:

Kirby: *Sees new friend!* Poyo!

George: *SCREAMS EXTERNALLY AND RUNS IN TERROR FROM THE ENDLESSLY CONSUMING VOID GIVEN FLESH*

Kirby: *Sad now new friend has left* Poyo...

[X] PLAN: BAMBOOZLE
-[X] Antagonize the Starman into attacking their allies (1 Action)

Is not Kirby the ideal being? All the boy does is eat, sleep, and fight anyone who tries to interfere with him doing those things. Ah, the life.

Unrelated note: Good to see our stats are improving. Still a long way to go before we're ready to play with the big boys. My first target is getting all of our stats over 15. That feels sufficiently well-rounded for a faction leader. It's gonna be a long long way.
