I want to break down the techniques and explain why QI burst is the best.

[] [AntTechnique](Lightness) Triple Master- Floods your body with qi, allowing you to move at blinding speeds. Select 3 actions on the day Triple Master is activated and you will perform them at -9. Cooldown: 9 Days

- This one is strictly bad. 3d20-27 (three D20 rolls at -9) is strictly less than 1d20. 1d20 averages 10.5. 3d20-27 averages 4.5. We get more progress on stuff not using this technique than we do using it and not by just a little. Each of the rolls has effetely a 50% chance of doing nothing because the -9 eats the roll down to a zero. MAYBE that gets better if we train it, but it's going to take a lot of reduction to that -9 for it to be worth it.
The statistics are modified significantly by the fact that we can't roll below a 1. 3d20-27 with no possible roll of 0 or less averages out to like... 11.25 or 11.75, I forget which. And the technique responds very favorably to anything that reduces the penalty or confers a bonus.

Not that favorably. The same fact that anything below a 1 becomes a 1 means that those previously low rolls don't see any benefit from the bonus. You don't start seeing a full +1 until the bonus/reduced penalty exceeds 10.

[X] [CultivatingLadybug] 7 Food
[X] [AntTechnique] (QiBlood) Qi Burst- Floods your body with Qi, adding +3 to your roll. If the action is a cultivation action, the bonus is +5 instead. Cooldown: 9 Days

[X] [Plan] Cleanup
-[X] D33: Cultivate outside your lair (Medium chance of summoning a ?? Level predator)
-[X] D34: Purge the Red Mold from your farm (0/?)
-[X] D35: Deposit the black tarry substance just outside your lair (0/??)

Triple master feels best long term, but I've no confidence we'd reach this long term. Our dice luck has not made me super confident about aiming to defy the will of the heavens, so I'm setting my sights on lower (but more reliable) goals.

At the current level of penalty, we get +1.8 worth of expected roll for a +1 bonus (or from dropping the penalty to -8 from -9). It gets better as the bonuses or penalties grow larger, yes.

The predators wouldn't be that bad if we could get better combat rolls, they are all a good source of food and cultivation.

Now that we have some breathing room, we need to expand our shelter to expand the farm so we don't have to keep worrying about a food death spiral

@Tam Lin general world building questions: how many Qi elements are there, and which? is there "categories"/"layers", like 4/5/8/... base elements followed by hybrid elements, is it all just a huge net/mess, ...?

You'll find out later.

That said, I had to meet with my family today and I'm pretty wiped. I'll try to update tomorrow on saturday instead even though I don't usually do weekend updates

Day 33-34: A poisonous Qi
Your hard earned Qi is on the verge of dispersing if you don't cultivate soon. Despite other pressing issues, you do not want to be shunted back into a lower realm.

Besides, you'd just gotten a wealth of food from obliterating the ladybug, so it was best to make use of it.

However, the breakthrough gunk still made it impossible to cultivate inside your lair. You're forced to cultivate outside where you can still smell what the ladybug has marked as its territory.

You ignore the awful stench for now. You'll be able to get rid of it later, or perhaps it'll go away the next time it rains. Although the latter is doubtful as the stench is filled with Ladybug Qi. Even after death, the ladybug continues to pose problems for you, huh?

Regardless, your cultivation goes smoothly.

Initial 2nd Realm of Qi Gathering 7/60 > 20/60
You are Wounded and will consume *1.1 more food. You will recover 6 HP REGARDLESS of your hunger level. You currently have 52/60 HP
You have consumed 1.1 food, bringing your total to 5.9 food
A red mold is preventing your fungus farm from producing food

With the most pressing matter done, you turn your attention to the red mold that has spread in your farm.

This is the kind of infection that can ruin a farm, forcing ants to abandon and create new farms. However, for a cultivator like yourself, removing a mortal mold like this is as simple as using your Qi and willing it to get rid of the infection.

However, what should have been a simple operation goes wrong. Although you have successfully killed the mold and saved your farm... the Qi from the mold has to go somewhere.

Unfortunately, that somewhere seems to be inside your meridians.

You see, all beings hold qi. Even mortal beings have qi. And for an ant like you, even the qi of a mortal mold like that can prove dangerous. Especially since you had to clear your whole farm of the fungus.

Purging the poisonous qi should be an effort of will, not even worth mentioning. However, it will still take at least a day to clear it. Annoying.

Purge the red mold from your farm 0/5 > 10/5
You have 1 Poison Qi flowing in your meridians. Predators are repulsed by you.
You are Wounded and will consume *1.1 more food. You will recover 6 HP REGARDLESS of your hunger level. You currently have 58/60 HP
You have consumed 1.1 food, bringing your total to 4.8 food.
You have 1 Fungus Farm, which will produce 1 food in 5 turns
You have gone 1 day without churning your qi. If you go 4 days without churning your qi, the qi will disperse, setting your cultivation back to the Initial 1st Realm of Qi Gathering.

Select 3 actions to be taken over the next 3 turns
You may use your techniques. Include them as a subvote for an action if you want to use them

[] Try to salvage food from the ruined colony (1/10)
[] Clear away the Ladybug's scent (0/?)
[] Try to expand your meager shelter (9/30)
[] Work towards expanding your fungus farm. (Not enough inventory space for a second farm)
[] Purge the Poison Qi from your Meridians (0/?)
[] Cultivate the Poison Qi (0/?)(Spends 10 Cultivation XP per action)(Gains 1 Poison Qi per completion)
-[] (Why would you do this? Are you a suicidal ant?)
[] Try to get a feel for the mysterious energy surging within you (Initial 2nd Realm of Qi Gathering 20/60)(You cannot cultivate in your lair without first getting rid of the black tarry substance)
[] Cultivate outside your lair (Medium chance of summoning a ?? Level predator)
[]Seek out Qi Vein (0/???)
[] Deposit the black tarry substance just outside your lair (0/??)
[] Deposit the black tarry substance far from your lair (0/??)(Medium chance of encountering ??? Level predator. Predator encountered will fight to the death)
[] Train the (QiBlood) technique, Qi Burst (Initiate 0/???)
[] Train the (Lightness) technique, Beetle Charge. (Initiate 0/???)
[] Try to integrate into a new colony (0/??)
[] Take over another colony (0/???)

Does the Poison Qi have any negative effects?
The most obvious one: If you're hunting predators for food, predators can sense it and stay away from you. After all, they wouldn't try to eat something so obviously poisonous.

Less obvious: it's poison qi inside your meridians. It's like Fire Qi, Earth Qi, etc. It's going to cause Qi Deviation eventually.

In that case:

[X] Deposit the black tarry substance far from your lair (0/??)(Medium chance of encountering ??? Level predator. Predator encountered will fight to the death)

Since predators don't like us right now.

Is the only way to gain a cultivation technique through killing predators? Could we not get one if we hold a sizable amount of Poison Qi for a long enough time?

Yeah, attracting predators is actually something we want to do, they're a good source of food.

Since we repulse predators while having the Poison Qi within us, should we take the chance to deposit the black tarry substance far from our lair?

There's not really much reason to deposit far from our lair if we can't attract a ??? Predator. The food from the predator is the main compensation for the higher DC.

It's possible that not having gunk near our lair means there's lesson chance of attracting/empowering on a bad event, but it's kind of a side benefit and not necessarily worth the higher progress required by itself.
