Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

"Embrace the Crawling Chaos and be free of form's shackles!" The thing calls out somehow in the tongue of the People, a dread bargain that sinks deeper than words.... and then it spits its tongue at you, a glob of meat and and gristle burning with that same unearthly flame as its organs.
I hope this didn't just become a WH40K crossover... :eek2:
OOC: Oh look it's your first horrific monstrosity and sin against nature and you are not even level 3 yet. Seriously though that alchimist had the worst luck
I almost feel sorry for the creature. One second he's overseeing dinner prep, then he suddenly drifts off into sleep only to fall face first into a pot of boiling stew, and if that wasn't enough, he ends up in the center of a Wild Magic event that turns him into some sort of raving Aberration. Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

There is a time for being bold (like running into the room just now), but this isn't one of those. We're hurt and we have no clue what exactly this thing is capable of. It seems to possess at least some amount of Damage Reduction and it has that ranged acid (+transmutation?) attack that we don't want any part of. Gorok and Cob are both much better at dealing enough damage to pierce DR, and they have higher AC and Reflex saves to give them a better chance at avoiding its attacks.

[X] On second thought maybe you should get out of its reach (Spend a Full round action to get out of its reach without triggering an attack of opportunity)

That was not damage reduction, that was Kori rolling 0 for damage on 1d4-1, though granted that does not entirely obviate the point about his actual ability to hurt this thing. :V

Haha, when you're melee damage is that low, just about everything around you has virtual Damage Reduction.

Is Cob still nauseated?

What spells does Mina have prepared? It'd be nice to have the abomination webbed or dazed, though I put more stock in the former.

We changed her spell loadout before starting on this mission. She came into it with Hermean Potential, Mage Armor, and Recharge Innate Magic prepared. Of those, she only has Hermean Potential remaining, in addition to her cantrips. Her Daze cantrip is actually really good at this level and against Humanoid targets, which includes the Xulgath, though I don't think the current monster qualifies for that any longer.

No, you can tell that much, it is an aberration.

+5 for the swipe; +7 for the spit, though to be honest Kori is not sure if it can do the spit thing again. After all it only had one tongue right?

We are the one with Knowledge Dungeoneering, so I will defer to Kori's judgement.

@Goldfish , taking a full action to disengage is kinda pointless, as it can simply choose to attack us again. If we have its attention, we should capitalize on that. Kori has an AC of 17, with Total Defense it goes to 21. It would need to roll 16 or more to hit. I like those odds to make it waste an action attacking us while Gorok and later Cob flank it and put it down.

The point of taking the action this way would be retreat from melee range without provoking an AoO, but I can see your point.

Fingers crossed...

[X] Now that it's attention is focused on us, we might as well make the most of the opportunity so that Gorok can attack it with his full might.
-[X] Kori stays close to keep the monster distracted, using Total Defense to gain a +4 Dodge bonus to his AC.
-[X] Mina casts Daze on the remaining cook, Gorok attacks the monster, and Cob continues to vomit noisily.

Arc 2 Post 25: With Desperate Courage
With Desperate Courage

Season of Rushing Waters

Light flares in Mina's cupped hands, silver-white that at another time might have recalled a dream in waking, but here and now you can only see the last of the cooks jab his spear at her head even as the beast draws itself up with boneless strength, a mass of flesh. tendons and hate. the first of its blows is turned away by befuddling shadows, but alas there are still eyes under there. Somehow you manage to turn just enough for it to hit the thickest part of your armor, a bruising blow, not quite enough to knock you off your feet or do much harm. While the monster's malice was bent upon you, babbling and screeching, promising a world of nightmare to make hell itself pale Gorok tears into it from behind, slashing with his claws in a wide arc that sends flesh, blood and liquefying bone flying.

Monster takes 14 Damage -> Now at 18/32

How is it not dead? you wonder bemused as you are bloody, covered in his viscera.

Somewhere behind you there's a hiss of pain, the thump of a heavy body hitting the ground and the high pitched laugh of a goblin looking for vengeance.

Cook 3 takes 8 Damage -> Now at 0/13 (Unconscious)

The monster does not move, it does not lash out, it does not even spit out some piece of itself, instead a jagged mouth opens in what was once its neck in dreadful parody of a mouth and it screams, without sound, without end agony that tears at the inside of your skull, yet even in the midst of it you know that if you could understand the meaning behind it, if it were closer, than you would beg for the oblivion of suffering.

You take 10 Damage -> Now at 3/18

As you open bleary eyes you see Gorok look at you in shock, all but one of his blows had bounced off the thickening scales as this thing struggles in becoming... in being born. Cob has no more luck in ending it and Mina's shot slams against one of the shelves near the ceiling.

A gurgling hissing laugh rises from the ruined form, no longer able to speak in any tongue of this world "All shall know the joy of begetting their new selves!" Without warning it turns and lashes at Gorok with with boneless hind feet and tail sending the warrior flying into one of the shelves.

Gorok takes 13 Damage -> Now at 10/23

For a moment you consider healing, but no... a blow like that would kill you sure as a sixty foot drop. Your only hope is not not get him... and hopefully distract it.

"I name the maggot and son of maggots, unfit to dwell in a plague rat's innards!" Good job Kori, I'm sure this twisted abomination will care what you think of its lineage, the small part of your mind that isn't distracted by mind shattering pain notes.

Rather than try to get to his feet again Gorok charges, claws held close to the ground, butting and ripping. A distended limb goes flying... and that is all the opening Cob needs to stick his dagger into one of the hissing bubbling wounds.

Monster takes 8+9 damage -> Now at 1/32

It is... somehow... still not dead, held together by whatever eldritch force is animating it, by whatever screamed though it. Desperately you swing at it, the blow goes wild as the edges of your vision start to blur. Thunk, Mina's stone bounces harmlessly off its writhing, suffering mass.

Still laughing it strikes Gorok about the head... and with that the warrior finally crumbles

Gorock takes 11 Damage -> now at -1/23

"Change is upon you. Ch..an..ge is.."

The words die, along with it, as Cob flings himself upwards in a ball of spite and goblin curses, shattering the fleshless skull.

Without pause for breath he runs to Gorok and pulls an eyelid open. "He good, he good-live hunt, magic stoke life fire," he gets out still in that tongue.

What do you do?

[] Grab the unconscious cook to interrogate and any loot you can get and retreat before the xulgath can rally a defense

[] Heal up as best you can and continue, the Blackscale must not be forearmed

[] Write in

OOC: On the one hand you guys were really unlucky with your rolls, on the other it's a good thing Akorian stayed in range of that thing so he could soak up the SLA attack or else Gorok would be dead.

Damn, we were right to tank that thing?

What even was that thing?

Kori has no idea, for the same reason he could not identify the psychic magic it used on him, way out of his paradigm. What I can now say is that ir was CR 5. I was expecting it to go down easier since it did not have any DR and its armor class was not that good, but the rolls just weren't with you guys.
