Age of Ice and Blood: A Pathfinder System Heroic Fantasy Quest

Do you expect the pirates to tail you for another go after the last attempt with more firepower?
It actually does not matter, pirates are no longer a threat to us because, as DP confirmed, Marcella is faster and can outrun them. Last time we fought the pirates we had to accept the fight only because we had the Pride with us, which isn't so fast and which we couldn't leave behind.

Even if we do return to Orinilu first, there is a good chance Moru and Ziku would still travel with us if our next destination is Inaurna, because it's likely they won't be able to find a suitable ship among the friendly Anwari ports that will be traveling south in a reasonable timeframe. We know it's not a popular sea route and most Anwari vessels are longships unsuitable for transporting Ziku's mount.
Maybe. And maybe not. I am wary to decide about this now.

@Goldfish, any chance you can remove this
Or perhaps Antonio could even be convinced to transport you there directly upon the Marcella? He is ever on the lookout for new business opportunities, after all. Either way,
from the vote to not mislead Neios in case we decide to go to Inaurna after we return from Anwa islands?

Compared to Neios' homeland, Inaurna looks better with promises of more trade profits and more knowledge and magic, and Zaia and Antonio apparently concur, so it might very well be that we'll decide to choose Inaurna over his land.

I'm not sure if the plan will even work if we don't intend to return to Orinilu after the Korman trip. Neios is probably willing to hang around for a few months, but 9 months is much less likely.

He's impatient to return to his homeland.

Nah, I mean after we return to Orinilu from Anwa Islands, we might not want to ferry him to his land and might instead go to Inaurna letting him go home on his own. It doesn't change that he'll only wait for us a few months.

Edit: It's just that even "perhaps" can look suspiciously close to a promise, especially in a state he is in.

Ah, I gotcha. Editing the plan now.

They can bait you with fake shinies or even use magic to get the wind to slow down the Marcella if they had the resources.

Baiting us is possible, wide-scale weather manipulation is not.

Thankfully, we're in a low magic setting, so there won't be any Control Weather shenanigans. The best anyone is going to be able to manage will be to use Divination magic to predict upcoming weather and take advantage of it, like Isele did with the fog that concealed his attack.

Well, weather manipulation is technically possible, if something like the Oceanid Fey get involved since they have the spell as a spell-like ability, but at that point they could just use the weather itself to deal with us. Not offending the Oceanid should be a priority for us.

They could have an enslaved being like that lightning thing in a jar to help too.

It really depends if DP feels you need another ambush or two to keep you busy.

@DragonParadox, given that Tender's tribe is the Own Tribe, and she wears owl mask, did anyone of our party noticed anything that might be a connection / relation between the strange owl following us for more than a month and Tender / her tribe?

I would agree. It wouldn't hurt to have a capable smith onboard if that happened somehow, but I wouldn't hire on one explicitly for that purpose. It's one thing to brew potions and work on Alchemy onboard, those are fairly compact setups that use small flames, or none at all now that we have that neat magic cauldron, but even a makeshift smithy would be a significant investment in space for relatively little return.

If we get a good deal on property, however, and can establish a permanent compound for ourselves in Orinilu, it wouldn't be unreasonable to consider hiring a smith on full-time. Beyond taking care of our own needs, it could potentially be a decent side business for us to operate.

Any time Zaia and Inge were in residence, our smith(s) could be buffed to be far more effective at their craft. A Crafter's Fortune extract from Zaia, a flask of Magian Wine from his Tears to Wine spell, and a Guidance spell from Inge would net them a +8 bonus on their Craft checks, and Inge could maybe even use her Fortune Hex on them to help achieve optimal results.

We've also got the books and tools we looted from Ipsit, for another +5.
  • Books on Alchemy and Metallurgy (+3 to Craft Alchemy and all Metal Craft skills as long as one is in a position to reference the tomes)
  • Masterwork Smiting and Alchemy Tools (+2 to relevant rolls)
If we could hire a 3rd level Expert with a +1 Intelligence bonus, the relevant Skill Focus (Craft) feat, and one of the traits that gives a +1 Craft check bonus, they would have a Craft check bonus of +11, or +25 once all of our modifiers are applied. That would make for someone reliably able to craft Masterwork items. Even someone of lesser experience could manage with our help. It would be a good way to outfit our people in Masterwork gear, and much cheaper than purchasing it normally.
@Goldfish, about possibility of hiring a smith to craft gear, have you seen my recent post with example gear crafting numbers? I actually forgot the reason I wanted to check it, but I happened upon your earlier post and remembered.
I wondered if we could actually craft our weapons and armor, e.g. by giving Zaia 1 rank in each of Craft (Armor), Craft (Bows), Craft (Weapons), with Craft (any) being his class skill he would roll 4 + 4 (Int) + 2 (Magian Wine) + 3 (Ipsit's Books) + 2 (Ipsit's Tools) + 5 (Crafter's Fortune) + take 10 for 30 total, and it looks like this:

ItemPriceRaw costCraft DC + 10Progress, gp / weekItems / weekWeeks / Item
Scale mail50 gp16.67 gp15+10: 25751.50.666
Chain mail150 gp50 gp16+10: 26780.521.924
Shield, heavy wooden7 gp2.34 gp12+10: 22669.420.107
Composite Longbow +1 Str200 gp66.67 gp17+10: 27810.4052.470
Spear2 gp0.67 gp12+10: 2266330.031
+Masterwork (weapon)300 gp100 gp20+10: 30900.33.334
+Masterwork (armor)150 gp50 gp20+10: 30900.61.667

Doesn't look feasible, 6 weeks for a single Masterwork Composite Longbow or another masterwork weapon of comparable price.

And having a specialized PC class smith with high skills would not change much, roll of 40 instead of 30 would result in 75% crafting time compared to Zaia's, roll of 45 instead of 30 would give 66% of Zaia's crafting time, so 4 weeks for a single Masterwork Composite Longbow.

So unless we can use other crafting rules, that's apparently not the way to go, it's better to brew and sell potions and Magian Wine and buy existing weapons and armor.
Bottom line is, if I had not made mistakes in calculation, it would be faster to brew potions / wine to sell (e.g. 4 CLW potions per day for a net profit of 100 gp, 700 gp per week) and buy gear with that money than to try to craft gear ourselves (which would get us gear at a rate of about 75 -- 90 gp per week according to calculations).

Arc 11 Post 13: Debts Come Due
Debts Coming Due

Eighteenth Day of Ikomi-hamba (Ikomi Descendant) 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

"I understand why you have not asked for a loan from the Fellowship, my lord. Admittedly, we have done much for you that others might consider charity, and accepting more merely compounds the issue. For one with a background such as yours, this must be a nearly intolerable situation." Ah, how many words have gone to the soothing of wounded pride over the years. Even as you speak the words you are reminded almost irresistibly of Silver saying 'humans brush each other's manes all the time, just not with their hands'. Thankfully you have a bit more than empty reassurance to offer. "This is why I am not going to offer you a loan. Come spring, Marcella and the men of the Fellowship will sail for Apuku once more, to fulfill a pledge to aid them in a coming battle against dark forces."

"And you wish for my aid, mine and that of my men as we were in the battle with the reavers?" Neios sounds cautious and little wonder, for that journey would not lead him towards home but away, not to mention that one man's 'dark forces' might be another's bootless errand.

"I won't ask you to endanger yourself or your guards on our mission, for you have your own path to follow," you offer reassurance. "Instead, I wish you to watch over Wayfarer's Respite, to assist those men we leave behind in guarding it from the unscrupulous who call Orinilu home, and to continue training the guardsmen serving House Koire in our absence." God and all His saints know the sorry bastards need it. You have the sinking feeling that some of them had never used a weapon in anger and even those of the Koire armsmen who had did so under someone else's watch.

"And in return for this... favor?" he asks surprised, and perhaps looking for some barb in the hook still for so great a show of trust. Truth be told every man you can scrounge up from garrison duty here is one more Fellowship soldier in the battle for Korman, and that might be the edge betwixt victory and defeat.

"For this service, when we return from our campaign among the Anwari islands, the Fellowship will reimburse you for your time and expertise, providing you the coin needed to fund your return to your homeland free of debts or favors owed. This would not be charity or even a loan, but something you have earned by the sweat of your brow and the skill of your arms. What say you, Lord Neios?"

He does not answer at once but leans back in his seat, hands on his temples as though fighting a headache. For all his attempts to hide it on the young lord's face you can read the anger of pride seeking redress warring with the demands of practicality. Thankfully, as on that distant northern shore, the latter wins.

"So do I swear upon my honor, under the light of the Thousand Gods," he vows as the stars start to kindle upon the sky outside, the words plain and few, but no less honestly meant for it.

"Three more blades to hold the walls?" Tom grunts when you give him the news later that evening as you were trying to work out if you could mix the hauling of stones and the training of men to bear heavier armor for days through.

You know that tone all too well... "But?"

"He's got a grudge in the city, doesn't he? Whose to say he wouldn't try to deal with it while he is a guest between these same walls? No offense, my lord..."

"Tom, I haven't heard you to give offense once in your live to those who did not deserve to be offended," you sigh. "Say your piece."

"Most highborn aren't as sensible 'bout matters of honor as you are, are they? If this Neios fellow, lord if you please, gets into his head that he can have his revenge by one means or another, who's going to argue him out of it? The men we leave to take care of the horses? He'll tell 'em to keep to the stables. Mayhap Odorin Koire, but he's a boy and short on the strength to tell a man grown to hold off his grudges."

"I'm sure Neios will behave with honor," you answer, but both of you know that alone will not necessarily save him. A man might act with honor and end up buried in the potter's field with his throat slit just the same if he did not also act with wisdom. You can hardly demand a more specific oath of him now without giving insult. Perhaps the feud will settle by the time Marcella is ready to set sail, for now you have other matters to settle.

Twenty Fourth Day of Ikomi-hamba (Ikomi Descendant) 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

Though the weather has turned clearer over the next few days, allowing the ground to harden into something that one can actually march on and not wade through like molasses, the training still has not been going as well as you might have hoped. Normans and Englishmen used to the weight of chain and gambeson still struggle under the weight of the bronze lined armored coats that are easier to shake off than they are to wear for any great span of time. The only bright spot among the Fellowship is Wanderer, who seems wholly untroubled by the cold and thrives even in the long grueling runs with his new armor.

"Not cold, not cold at all, easy winter," he proclaims, which earns him no friends among the rest of the company as they shiver and curse, though you do not think he means it as a boast. According to Zaia his folk, like most of the hill dwelling Knikut, hunt by wounding and then running down their prey with spears with hunting hounds at their heels.

Net-users and Spearmen Men-at-Arms at 2/4 progress in Medium Armor proficiency
Wanderer gains Light Armor proficiency [Chain Shirt Equipped]

Giving lie to your uncharitable thoughts the local guards set about their own training with a willingness that gets even Tom to offer a few silent nods in place of the usual torrent of complaints and corrections. They should be ready to, in his words, 'hold in the shieldwall and use a spear without poking their eyes out' in about ten days or so.

What do you talk with next?

[] Runs in Rain as he tries to learn how to fight as well as gain the weapons to do so

[] Zaia has spent the last several days attempting to find out more about the spirits, not those of the forest or the rivers, but of the city itself. The Tinker Court is drawn, it seems, to the diligent industry of mankind, thus Orinilu itself might be your passage into their domain.

[] Inge, as she tries to teach herself how to throw a knife

[] The strange owl, the thing has been following you for more than a moonturn by now. There has to be some reason for its strange behavior, see if you can discern it

[] Antonio as he goes to the market to pick up trade goods for the journey in the spring, perhaps you can do some buying or selling of your own

[] Esha, to learn the tongue of the city more thoroughly so as to stumble less over the words of Engur

OOC: Zaia has done most of the investigation into how to commune with the local fey, since well... he is the best suited to it and you guys do have an in with them. Still, there is no guarantee he got it right until you try and he is not about to do that without an armed escort.

I would prefer to help either Zaia or Runs in Rain...
By the way, will we be able to contact Serik in Ashinu temple about the curse? Probably one more false lead, but checking does not hurt.

You guys chose to go to both the other temples and the hunters about it, I assumed you did not like the temple of Ashinu for some reason, but if you do want to there is nothing stopping you from trying that as well.

Time to make some new contacts! Might get a unique trade goods source too since sure we can sell Tinker Fey toys and such.

I really want to followup on Zaia's action to contact the Court of Gears, but we only have so much time before Winter breaks and Spring returns. If we want the Otter-kin to learn how to fight, if they can learn at all, I think we should try to find out sooner rather than later. We can search out the Court of Gears afterward.

@DragonParadox, has Antonio made any inquiries about selling Magian Wine in Orinilu or elsewhere?

Ok, let's hope that we'll manage to help Zaia.

Not yet, he is busy with getting the laborers and supplies for the keep as well as buying the cargo for the journey in the spring. Characters are doing things in the background for now while everything gets settled. In the next season we will have our first proper turn in the city.
