Hogwarts Sect of Witchcraft and Wizardry

@JaceAoT Agree on the dad coming first, and friends second, but the temptation to screw with canon is always there at third for me and influences the friend making. Rei and Harry have a lot in common and since he's supposed to be isolated this summer he'd probably be all about a friend or running buddy that isn't super political or star-struck. Would also be a convenient sounding board for the magical mundane stuff she's going to experience during the summer.

Everything but RunesMax All the Electives
This turn:
4 social actions
59% for max Divination
59% for max Arithmancy
2 tokens remaining for use
This turn:
3 social actions
80% for max Runes
76% for max CoMC
4 tokens remaining for use

Next turn:
Hard to say as the % above
are not too solid.
It's basically all TBD.
Feel free to provide likely
scenarios and stuff.
Next turn:
3 social actions
88% (81% if the Runes' 80% above fails) for max Arithmancy
88% (81% if the Runes' 80% above fails) for max Divination
1 extra action TBD (social, meridian, charms, etc.)
I don't know if it's intentional but you keep portraying the plans as though we'll get all our socials this summer, when at least half the reason for not doing Runes is because that isn't guaranteed and we want insurance in case we lose both fights.

To be fair, my plan had the same number of social actions as zinay's (and one more than yours! ) until it was pointed out to me. ^^

I mean, a large part of the point of my plan is that it lets us adjust the plan next turn for its results
How about we take the most likely scenario, then?
If we succeed on one of Divination and Arithmancy (48% chance), we put a token action into the one that failed, put a token action and a malus action into CoMC for a 94% chance of completion, and distribute the last two actions according to the situation (maybe put an extra action into the one that failed if our chances are too low, maybe put an action into meridians, probably an extra social action)
In this scenario, you'd end up with:
-Divination or Arithmancy at Beginner 2.
-CoMC and Divination or Arithmancy very likely at Beginner 2.
-Likely one extra social action and a malus meridian one.

vs.

The most likely scenario for Max All the Electives:
-Runes and CoMC likely at Beginner 2.
-Divination and Arithmancy very likely at Beginner 2.
-Either turn one of the above from "likely" to "very likely" or gain an extra social action or a meridian one.

So, the difference seems to be:

Everything but Runes
1 social action and 1 malus meridian action.
1 more skill at "very likely" instead of "likely" or 1 more social action.

vs

Max All the Electives
Runes likely at Beginner 2.

Is this fair to say?

Perfect, thanks!

If I didn't think you were absolutely undervaluing, on all possible levels, the importance of training Runes, then I'd vote for your very solid plan. Either way, the comparison is clear now, which was my goal, just so voters can make the most informed decision possible.

Can I ask what makes Runes so good, especially when compared to the other 3rd year electives?

So basically mechanically the benefits for each class are thus

CoMC: Fun Animal Friend and Bonus to Astronomy and Herbology

Arithmancy: ??? and bonus to Transfiguration and Charms

Divination: ??? and bonus to Social Situations and Ancient Runes

Ancient Runes: ??? and bonus to Divination and Arithmancy

We don't know what the ???s are. Epic Bygones and people who support his plans at least partially do this to know what the ??? are.

Personally I am fine with not knowing all the ??? and like prefer Zinay's plan as it has better odds on the stuff that helps us out the most during the next School Year (CoMC and Arithmancy), which Epic Bygones plan has worse odds on these.

Because there is a known time limit for exploring the wonders of the mortal realm, and thus we sorta need to grind the skills to learn what Rei finds. Furthermore the odds are basically a coinflip, and we can tilt them in favor by arguments, which is important as both the breakthrough decision alongside the character generation for curiosity fit well with Rei being able to craft an argument to overcome herself.

Alright so Albus told Rei that love is a source of wonder, and that means we should totally be capable of using that as a theme to ignite the curiosity she has for the world to explore how it manifests differently among mortals/immortals. This won't stop as the school year starts, can be used to see how it influences their success in the school year, and even exploration into the mortal realm in subsequent summers.

[X][Social] You've decided to set apart a day to be the model daughter. Starting with breakfast a-la-Qi, followed by a trip to the art exhibition at the local gallery, a picnic lunch, then a free afternoon to do whatever he'd like. In short, spend time with dad.

This is taking the advice of Albus about cherishing the bond Rei has with her father, the advice Ollivander gave about mortals having little time, and aiming to find a nugget of what Albus was talking about with love being the source of wonder through having Rei interact with someone she loves.

[X][Social] The address you got from Harry really isn't that far from you. If you wanted, you could incorporate a dozen or so miles into your morning run with little issue and swing by.

This is checking up on Harry to see if he takes it as bad as Rei did, and get a different perspective on how mortal families look like from an immortal perspective. Oh, and while this is ooc in the event of a crit there is the possibility of something intresting if the canon protection given to Harry by Lily still works as that is powered by love iirc.

[X][Social] You receive a letter inviting you to "Trade pointers" with "Young Mistress" Daphne Greengrass. Also in the envelope is a single-use transport talisman you're starting to become quite familiar with.

This is looking at things from the perspective of an old blood family, and Rei learning about her late mother whom she loved. Oh, and bonding with cousins whom she hopes to get to know even if they can never use that phrase.

For next turn social action I'd suggest the following,

[][Social] Hermione has invited you and Dad to meet her own parents, to tell the adults comforting stories about your time at Hogwarts and set their minds at ease.

This has Rei get a third perspective from the mortal pov, and maybe see what the difference is that made Hermione not have any problems.

[][Social] You've got Dad to agree to a weekend trip to the countryside for you, visiting Mandy's clan and reservation.

This gives a look into the immortal side of things from a well established clan.

[][Social] Although the time you can spend at Hogwarts is precious, so is the opportunity to actually get to know some of the elders. At worst, they'll just tell you to leave them alone. See what happens when you try to take your lunch at the head table.
-[] Albus Dumbledore

This would be fun to take, and likely Rei cement any answer she comes up with.

-[X] Albus Dumbledore
-He was extremely nice and helpful in the interactions we've had with him, and the fact he even bothered to interact with us is astounding. He told us to call him Albus!
Oh I totally think Rei should do a follow up on what they talked about last time, but that is best done after she has spent some time seeing how others handle, or simply avoid the problem. So do it next month imo.
I wonder, given there's a substantive community of purebloods, if they don't purposefully delay their ascension so as to profit from their privileges in this realm. That'd almost seem appropriate in both aspects.
I'm wondering if what the Great War in the mortal realm was pretty much a proxy war by various ascendant immortals** who wanted to avoid Voldemort using his Horcrux to have a permanent stream of loyal recruits once he ascended. Like the fact that most pureblood clans appear to do things in house implies a degree of conflict of interest, and it is interesting that Lucio can be a Lord while having graduated* Hogwarts I think implies a capability to leave something where there is sufficient motivation to overcome the obstacles for doing so.

I'd speculate the Elders are doing so by using Hogwarts itself as a method for doing so, and they're liable to be pretty limited to act outside of the school grounds. Oh, and this makes me wonder if something in the upper realms required their complete attention, and the last war didn't so much end as burn out in the mortal realm once Voldemort lost his ability to take over them.

*Presuming this remains unchanged from canon I suppose.
**Now for extra fun if Harry's parents graduates, and ascended did they come back down to the mortal realm to hide, or did they leave a lesser body behind to keep an eye on things until they had Harry? Because the reason Harry is Lord is he is the only Potter in the mortal realm, which uh has implications as he might have relatives in other planes of existence.

Can I ask what makes Runes so good, especially when compared to the other 3rd year electives?
First, it's not "compared" to the other Electives, since the plan is to get Runes like all the others (it's trained first only because it lowers the DC we need to meet for both Arithmancy and Divination, from 15 to 12). Beside that (Tl;dr at the end):

1. It's an Elective, and just like every other, not training it now would mean it will be 12 turns at minimum (most likely 14+) before we'll get the chance to do so again, at least officially. Runes' benefits not applying to all those turns, hurts more than simply delaying by a turn another skill's benefits.

2. Every skill is its own thing, of course, but as the only other Elective we know a bit of, look at CoMC, both its narrative and system benefits. Why wouldn't we want to get the Runes-equivalent of these? The only reason why the other plan has opted to leave it out (rather than Arithmancy or Divination) is that half of its system benefits (DC lowering of an Elective, rather than a normal skill or social actions) will likely not matter until third year. But the other half of it remains (the Runes-equivalent of the Moss and its bonus) and it's likely not locked to meridians (which we're starved for), either!

3. I can't think of any skill whose training scene I didn't thoroughly enjoy reading about. Karf has done an incredible job making all the Hogwarts subjects positively captivating, not to mention unique and useful. I can't stress this enough, but the thought of having to wait for dozens of updates before reading it and enjoying its fruits, when we could do so right now, is saddening.

4. Data is always great to have when making numbers-based decisions. Runes might be the best thing ever mechanically (and/or cool AF narratively) or even absolutely atrocious, but we won't know until we train it. This lack of information will negatively impact our decision-making, either way. Once again, even though the situation is different, think about CoMC: we went out of our way to train it during this first year, because we knew a bit about what to expect from it. Without that information, we would have been blind to its value and never even thought to try and access it before its time. Knowledge is power, the power of choosing if nothing else!

Tl;dr: instead of having to wait 12-14+ turns, we could immediately have its narrative and system benefits, read the awesome training scenes about it, play around with its mechanics and advancement options, and have more information to base our future plans on.

I'll point out as well that you have to take all those percentages combined to get an accurate read on the odds of each plan getting everything they're going for.
Max all Electives has a 45% chance of getting everything it's going for, with 1 free non-token action to spare to shore things up. And if Runes doesn't cap in the first month the chances of Divination and Arithmancy both go down for August as well.

Comparatively, Everything but Runes in @zinay's layout above gives us a 75.3% chance of getting those 3 to the cap, with 1 extra social action and either 1 or 2 free non-token actions to spend.
Honestly, if Runes is really that big a deal we can spend an action on it in August, see what it's like.

It's not 12 turns minimum. If it was physically impossible to gain progress in electives outside of third year or winning the House Cup, then we'd never have been able to train Care of Magical Creatures. If you really want it that bad we can spend Sect points on training it in Second year.

Wait wait wait.

Why are we skipping Runes for Arithmancy and Divination? Runes lowers their DC's. We can get them done next turn with less effort.

Note: I'm only glancing at the tally. Haven't read any discussion since yesterday.

@FriedIce @Hex123 For some reason, the tally is counting your votes in a separate tab. Would you guys mind just copying this whole thing directly?

Because the plan doesn't take into account that we might not have enough social actions to take all the socials we need to do this summer (i.e. Dad, Daphne and Diagon Alley), and leaves no room for error.

That's what I mean by "at least officially", in the post you quoted. It's 12 turns minimum when next summer starts (if we win the House Cup) or 14 turns minimum (when third year starts). I can't take into account the circumstances that could let us train Runes earlier, because they depend on factors we (and moreover I) have no control over.

Technically the other plan doesn't either, not for all 3 of the socials we "need".

We can literally choose what we get from spending Sect points if we accept that it'll be less effective for the price than the alternatives, we'd totally have control over it, unless you think we won't win any points over the year.

If it won it'd literally have at least 3 social slots, 2 this month and 1 the next. One of those would be Harry instead of Diagon with the way the current votes going, but that's fine because the whole point of the plan is to have free actions to slot where they're needed (in this case giving us more socials).

Based on what happened for CoMC and unless things change, no, we cannot and no we do not totally have control over it. What we can do is: hope to win sect points, hope for the appearance of a social action that has something to do with Runes or make a Write In of our own that does, spend sect points on the training action, then hope that the QM grants the right boon to us.

Moreover, for this to happen, this "we" that we're using needs to be the majority of voters for the social action, the majority of voters for the plan that spends sect points, and the majority of voters for the Boon that gives us access to Runes.

It's a lot of obstacles to overcome, and I'm not even including more stuff that we have little to no control over (like poor training rolls, poor social rolls, a tight schedule, narrative developments, etc.)

Karf has stated before that they're willing to give boons related to something specific we want as long as we accept that it'd be weaker than what we'd get if we let him pick instead.

The action associated with the points doesn't have to have any bearing on what boon we get. We got our first CoMC points from an action involving us getting money to buy Christmas presents for our friends, that worry is unfounded. And considering the turnout for you plan right now I highly doubt you won't find takers to go for Runes in the year if zinay's plan ends up winning this month.

Are you even reading my posts. Fuck it, I'm taking a break.

Sorry if I'm annoying you, it's not my intention. I'm just answering your posts as best I can. Let me go back and reread what you said, see what I missed.

Edit - Unfortunately, I couldn't find the issue, sorry. Feel free to clarify or to ask me for a clarification, if you want, but we can easily just drop it, too. ^^

Your plan as is only has about a 45% chance of getting all you want. If you add more social actions, you will be taking away estpecially from CoMC and Arithmancy (our 2 most useful subjects), for an even lower percentage possibility of getting everything.

This is why I like Zinay's plan the best personally. I think it has the best balance between more Socials (which we cannot rely on happening) and high benefits on what we get, with around a 75% chance of getting to beginner 2 in CoMC, Arithmancy and Divination, which we can increase if things go poorly on the first turn (or lock in more socials if it doesn't).

Personally i just want to get as far as possible with runes this month to get the bonus for arithmancy and divination for next month and focus on those.
I dont care about maxing runes but i do want the first two breakpoints of it before going for the other two.

Zinay's plan has actually higher odds on both Arithmancy and Divination than Epic's. Just Runes helps the subject doesn't mean doing so is optimal. Splitting our attention too far means we are more likely to get less likely to meet our goals.

Absolutely true, and I personally don't want to (nor, I believe, need to, as we're very unlikely to lose both combat encounters) use the extra action on a social, in August. The sentence you quoted was an answer to a discussion around whether my plan couldn't cover those 3 socials or not. It absolutely can, as long as we'd rather do that than increase the training odds (I don't).

For the Familiar love both the mossball and the flying/color changing/sheath snake. Both were interested in what we were doing, and seemed to be exited about it. they also seem to be more wonderous than the mushroom, and able to surprise us with what they are and do. One being more of a spirt and the other stealthy. But I think I must go with the mossball it just seems more caring by nature

All of the socials are to good. So I'm going to go with Greengrass because it was the most of a "fight" to get, and I don't want to insult them by asking for it and then not doing so. Only one because they're all great, but incase we loss to ourselves I don't want it to be one dropped.

Not sure what to do for the plan, but from the looks of things Max Every Thing is more ambitious and has good chance to work witch I like. But Everything but Runes has it a bit more focus (by ignoring Runes) that might allow for more of the summer socials that all sound great!
