Deedeequest or The Wonders of Mundus: Be Careful Who You Pretend To Be - A Genderous Isekai Quest

How Dice Rolls Work
Character sheet is here.

Dice rolls are 1d10 + Stat + Proficiency + any applicable bonuses, such as Boons.

You may spend 3 Tension to Overdrive for a retroactive +5 to your roll (a Determination Overdrive), or +3 to an ally's roll (a Teamwork Overdrive). I will also automatically overdrive to avoid exhaustion or unconsciousness.

It is possible to critically succeed (on +5 on skill checks and +10 on combat rolls) or critically fail (by the same margins), but rolling a 1 or a 10 does not automatically crit in either case. It is possible to crit retroactively by Overdriving.

Your stat bonuses have names:
  • Vigor grants a Strength bonus.
  • Agility grants a Dexterity bonus.
  • Spirit grants an Aura bonus.
  • Mind grants an Intuition bonus.
  • Resolve grants a Guts bonus.
Dice are rolled on a first come, first serve bonus. You only roll for Deedee.

Okay. I think I can grapple with the full vote block now.

Perks
[X] [PERK] Versatile Fighter (3 SP, gain more and improved combat Techniques)
[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Thorne (3 SP, Be at home in these lands, if you take only what you need.)

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
- [X] Dash 2 (1 TP, increase your movement when using this)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)
[X] [TECH] Zephyr's Grace
- [X] Ranged (1 TP, gives it an 8 meter range)

And reposting so they're counted:

We are probably going to need to tend to Ace's wounds. While doing so, do we:
[X] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

As for Sekhmet, we're probably going to help them with this - thankfully she doesn't need as much healing. Should we talk about -

[X] [SEKH] The raid. We did well but got banged up; how are they holding up?
[X] [SEKH] The job. This does kind of confirm what we were afraid of, does this change things?
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

And we're going to need to talk with Sio, and help her clean her kills. We have questions. Questions like:
[X] [SIO] What was your life like before? We don't know you all that well.
[X] [SIO] Hey, are you okay? You were really upset by the raid.

Voting!

Agreed on the Empathy thing - let's follow up and take that Boon from "covering a gap" to really excelling.
[X] [SKILL] Empathy (2 SP, +1 to rolls where the skill is relevant. The extra point will be saved for next level.)

Techs: I kinda want to fit in that extra power on Healing Zephyr, but what the hey, these are good - this is possibly a Deeply Questionable Move but it feels solid even if it might be pushing "not levelling core power" a little too far.
[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[X] [TECH] Get a new Boost technique (4 SP):
- [X] Fox's Eyes (Touch yourself or an ally to grant Accuracy, and +1 to all attack rolls)

Ace: I have strong opinions about boundaries, and one of them is "keep some clear air between 'flirting' and 'situations people can't leave.'" It might work out fine, or it might get Ace sitting there putting up with something she isn't totally comfortable with because it's that or continue being injured.
[X] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

Sekhmet: idk I'm just vibing this one.
[X] [SEKH] The raid. We did well but got banged up; how are they holding up?
[X] [SEKH] The job. This does kind of confirm what we were afraid of, does this change things?
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

Siobhan: maybe I'm reading too much in here, but "what's with that" comes off confrontational in a way "hey are you OK?" doesn't, so I think this gets us to the same sort of place but with a more supportive vibe.
[X] [SIO] Hey, are you okay? You were really upset by the raid.

[X] [SKILL] Empathy (2 SP, +1 to rolls where the skill is relevant. The extra point will be saved for next level.)

Then put it to good use with
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Dash (1 TP, short movement before or after attacking)
- [X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Gale Blast
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)

[X] [SEKH] The job. This does kind of confirm what we were afraid of, does this change things?
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

[X] [SIO] Why were you so angry with Guy? Fuck him, but that was more than 'fuck him.'
[X] [SIO] Hey, are you okay? You were really upset by the raid.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Gale Blast
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
(Edit: Copied this specific "oops all powerups" slate from unmatchingsocks's later post)

I'm convinced by the argument that we've been neglecting raw numbers, especially since folks more familiar with the game engine have endorsed grossing them up a little. I also kind of like Whirlwind Claws staying as a straightforward damage dealer (maybe with that "extra move action" thing attached), to avoid a situation where it ends up redundant with a similarly-customized Gryphon Talon Kick. DPS that doesn't have knockback is good b/c sometimes you don't want knockback (e.g. if you manage to chase down an archer).

[X] [SEKH] The raid. We did well but got banged up; how are they holding up?
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

I share the hesitance of others to talk with Sekh about IRL just yet. It's... a conversation that will have to happen eventually, but I don't know if I want to have it right now.

As for the "job" topic, I think it'd be better as a round table than as a 1:1. So far the diegetic plan for our suspicion that it's PCs doing this stuff has been "we'll very enthusiastically beat their asses"; I suspect more specific adventurer vs adventurer tacticing - especially since we have some intelligence on the perps' stats - might be worth talking out as a group.

[X] [SIO] You're into the Thornite deal, huh? I can't talk, I do my prayers, but what draws you to it?
[X] [SIO] Hey, are you okay? You were really upset by the raid.

I want to get to know Siobhan but "what was your life before" is (as has been discussed upthread about Sekhmet) not necessarily the best way to do that. So my first vote here is for a different way to get to know her.

The second one is... the sort of heart-of-the-party talky talk that can be really important for someone to bring up, and if we don't, we don't know whether someone else will.

[X] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)
[X] [ACE] Flirt. What? She's cute, she helped you, you like her. (Requires a challenging Rapport roll. Could blow up in your face.)

Deedee is really good at Rapport and not particularly good at Empathy yet. Play to her strengths.

------

And that... leaves the Perk question.

Lots of votes for Ubastjet's Boon, which... well, makes sense going up against what we think is another Erandite. I wouldn't be disappointed in that, even though I'm more inclined to wait and see on our last Boon slot.

I really wanted to come up with some fun Challenge Tech / Favorable Insight Perk ideas and I think they're the best value-for-points on the menu. But I... wasn't sure about the boundaries of the "write in" (are these meant to be roughly like a custom Boon? like Exalted Specialties, where you just describe a subset of the Skill you're better at?) and didn't see any suggestions from other players either. I'm tempted at this point to just let it stew in the back of my head so that when level 5 comes I'm better prepared with options.

So with those eliminated I'm back to my original inclination:
[X] [SKILL] Empathy (2 SP, +1 to rolls where the skill is relevant. The extra point will be saved for next level.)

I want to succeed at those Flammite Boon rolls. Also on the vote to follow Ace's lead during healing tonight, if that option wins. First-level skill is only a 10% help to that, but hopefully with Resolve at 5 now (which seems to have been the cutoff for locked vote options) we can start exercising Mind soon and give it some company.

I couldn't choose to leave out any of Sio's options. I'm curious over the new person, give me anything.

Is there a difference in outcome between voting all and voting none? I thought they were equivalent in approval voting systems.

... actually, you're probably right, at least from a numerical standpoint.

Anyway, my vote! Which may be slightly influenced by knowing Sio's deal but ssshhhh.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)

We definitely need to power up a bit, yo. And I like the Oops All Power-Ups version of this.

[X] [SKILL] Empathy (2 SP, +1 to rolls where the skill is relevant. The extra point will be saved for next level.)

... much as I really want to give Deedee Thorne's boon—and this is a decent time for it to happen story-wise, given the presence of her number one fan—people have a point that we should make Flamma's into more of an asset.

Playing to our strengths, yo. Plus I'm a big fan of poly route, which includes Ace.

[X] [SEKH] The job. This does kind of confirm what we were afraid of, does this change things?
[X] [SEKH] Life before. Whether we'll have our jobs or our livelihoods back home, and if we can go back.
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

The job for practical reasons, life before because I actually know how Sekhmet feels about here vs home and I think it's interesting, and gender shit because Deedee could always use more trans sempais.

[X] [SIO] You're into the Thornite deal, huh? I can't talk, I do my prayers, but what draws you to it?

Look. If I could, I'd vote for them all, but that's the same as voting for none of them, so instead I'm just picking my favorite option, because Sio's got a perspective on her god that literally no one else has yet.

So the results are in:

For our PERK, we're picking up the Least Boon of Ubasdjet, and that's the last of the Least Boons we can learn.

For our techs, we're going to Power Up all of the ones that care about power, and also put Knockback on Whirlwind Claws.

We'll chat with Ace, and keep our ears out for anything else.

We'll talk about gendershit and the job with Sekhmet.

We'll ask why Sio was so upset at Guy in particular.

Expect an update next week, hopefully by Tuesday.

Hey Talia, mighty fine quest you've got here. I had a blast reading it.

For the thread, I wanted to comment on one of the three mysterious shields we've seen art of, what with the grain and the flowers: I think it's a reference to "bread and roses" a phrase popularized by industrial feminism in the US (a labor-feminist movement aiui of predominantly immigrant working women in textile/manufacturing jobs buttressed by an uneasy alliance with middle/upper class white women) in the early 1900s.

It referred to the idea that the labor movement was not just about meeting material needs (bread) but also dignity of work (roses) and more broadly thereby a life rich and well-lived.

As the poem it was originally pulled from says "Hearts starve as well as bodies: Give us Bread, but give us Roses."

Though much of the original industrial feminism petered out by the 1950s due to a combination of legislative gains, assimilation via increased class mobility, and the failure of the always-strained cross-class relations, the phrase itself has persisted to the present through a variety of leftist contexts, including among the Democratic Socialists of America.

The heraldry of that shield in question - wheat and roses on green - is indeed a reference to the "bread and roses" slogan.

A modern slogan, as you noted.

What it's doing on Mundane or player heraldry remains an exercise for the readers...

So, bad news: because of some ongoing medical issues getting worse, for my own sanity, I'm likely to hiatus this quest for a couple of weeks after I put up the next update this weekend - just to get my medical stuff in order. I will be continuing with Synquest and may do something else less intensive (and more, ah, spacey) for distraction.

Next week, in lieu of volume 2 chapter 5.1, I believe that Bii has a canonical interlude.

ETA: Thanks to a necessary bit of bricklaying I put in the novella, I've edited an earlier chapter. You're going to want to reread Plunder and Palisades, back in Volume 1.

Unfortunately, that informal hiatus is turning to a formal hiatus. I did figure out what was wrong with me medically speaking, and I'm working on it! But I need to change mental tracks to another project, at least for a while.

I'll put up the next update, and then this thread is going radio silent till December. I will keep updating the chapter 1/volume 1 novella.

I appreciate your continued interest and apologize for the trouble.

Should I wait until December to post the interlude then?

I hope your problems are resolved as painlessly as possible, both physically and emotionally.

It feels odd to use the word hiatus to describe a break so temporary as this one. Or at least, I hope the health issues you're having are temporary.

Dice Roll Container for 2.4.4
Good news.

I'm bringing this out of hiatus early because I miss these characters more than expected.

This means dice rolls.

I'mma need:

Aura+Rapport with Ace, TN 12. (15 + 3 Sylphan = 18, Critical)
Aura+Medicine+Ubasdjet with Ace, TN 12. (11, +3 for Rapport success = 14, Success)
Int+Empathy with Ace, TN 10. (6, + 5 for critical Rapport = 11, Success)

Aura+Rapport with Sekh, TN 10. (13, Success)
Int+Stewardship with Sekh, TN 10. (10, +3 Asset for Rapport success = 13, Success)
Int+Empathy with Sekh, TN 10. (12, +3 for Stewardship Success = 15, Critical Success)

Aura+Rapport with Sio, TN 14. (17, Success)
Int+Survival with Sio, TN 10. (9 + 3 Asset from Rapport success = 12, Success)
Int+Empathy wth Sio, TN 12. (13 + 3 from Survival and Rapport success = 17, Critical Success)

Choose one Rapport roll to gain the Sylphan bonus. Critical success with any related rolls will boost the Empathy rolls.

Let's do the aura + rapport for Siobhan!

ETA: WOW WE DID GOOD ON THAT ONE.
bii threw 1 10-faced dice. Reason: Aura (7) + Rapport (1) Total: 10
10 10
