Deedeequest or The Wonders of Mundus: Be Careful Who You Pretend To Be - A Genderous Isekai Quest

How Dice Rolls Work
Character sheet is here.

Dice rolls are 1d10 + Stat + Proficiency + any applicable bonuses, such as Boons.

You may spend 3 Tension to Overdrive for a retroactive +5 to your roll (a Determination Overdrive), or +3 to an ally's roll (a Teamwork Overdrive). I will also automatically overdrive to avoid exhaustion or unconsciousness.

It is possible to critically succeed (on +5 on skill checks and +10 on combat rolls) or critically fail (by the same margins), but rolling a 1 or a 10 does not automatically crit in either case. It is possible to crit retroactively by Overdriving.

Your stat bonuses have names:
  • Vigor grants a Strength bonus.
  • Agility grants a Dexterity bonus.
  • Spirit grants an Aura bonus.
  • Mind grants an Intuition bonus.
  • Resolve grants a Guts bonus.
Dice are rolled on a first come, first serve bonus. You only roll for Deedee.

So, two things:
1. I helped! YAY! Sorry about the whole rock thing, and if the dialogue is a little bit off.
2. a bunch of it is in first person, which I think is inconsistent with the way you've been doing the rest of the quest.

Techniques

We have not improved Whirlwind Claws since we were level 1, and fixing that this level is now mandatory. It gains 1 level of Power, bringing it up to par with our other abilities.

This leaves us with 5 Technique Points we can spend. We can improve any of our attacks or heals up to twice, and our support ability up to 3 times:

[] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [] Dash (1 TP, short movement before or after attacking)
-
[] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [] Dash 2 (1 TP, increase your movement when using this)
[] [TECH] Gale Blast
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)
- [] Increased Blast Radius (2 TP, gives a 4-meter diameter blast radius)
[] [TECH] Healing Zephyr

- [] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)
- [] Increased Blast Radius (2 TP, gives a 6-meter diameter blast radius)
[] [TECH] Zephyr's Grace
- [] Ranged (1 TP, gives it an 8 meter range)

[] [TECH] Get a new Boost technique (4 SP):

-
[] Airy Aegis (Touch yourself or an ally to grant Evasion, and +1 to all defense rolls)
-
[] Gale Stance (Grant yourself increased movement and knockback on all melee attacks)

Campground Voting:

All of these are approval votes.

We are probably going to need to tend to Ace's wounds. While doing so, do we:

[] [ACE] Act professional, don't pry. (Safe. Boring.)
[] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)
[] [ACE] Flirt. What? She's cute, she helped you, you like her. (Requires a challenging Rapport roll. Could blow up in your face.)
[] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

As for Sekhmet, we're probably going to help them with this - thankfully she doesn't need as much healing. Should we talk about -

[] [SEKH] The raid. We did well but got banged up; how are they holding up?
[] [SEKH] The job. This does kind of confirm what we were afraid of, does this change things?
[] [SEKH] Life before. Whether we'll have our jobs or our livelihoods back home, and if we can go back.
[] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.

And we're going to need to talk with Sio, and help her clean her kills. We have questions. Questions like:
[] [SIO] What was your life like before? We don't know you all that well.
[] [SIO] Why were you so angry with Guy? Fuck him, but that was more than 'fuck him.'
[] [SIO] You're into the Thornite deal, huh? I can't talk, I do my prayers, but what draws you to it?
[] [SIO] Hey, are you okay? You were really upset by the raid.

Voting will open at 1 and stay open until 6:00 pm Saturday.

a bunch of it is in first person, which I think is inconsistent with the way you've been doing the rest of the quest.

I thought Bii and I caught all of that. PM me what we missed.

And you did fine. Stunning lack of Gryphon Talon Kick, but you actually kept to the IC plan and did some real good.

The battle scene was a lot of fun!

And I think my favorite part was Siobhan adapting the gunslinger's oath. The thought of that misogynistic mess' quote getting adapted in this way had me cackling. (Apologies if you like it, but what I learned from The Dark Tower is that it is, in fact, okay to put a series down partway through and stop reading it).

I have a lot of fondness for the Dark Tower and reference it extensively in this Quest, including Deedee's deadname; but I liked it a lot more when it was a high fantasy Western, before it became the greatest crossover event in the Stephen King Cinematic Universe.

You're not wrong that the Creed is misogynistic and the product of a patriarchal culture. That's kind of the point of Deedee using it in the context of this quest.

My brain is bouncing the fuck off the level-up voting, which may be because it's 3 AM here. I'll return to that in the post-sleep and see if it makes more sense, and repost my 'interpersonal skills' thoughts if I need to:

Ace: Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but flirting feels like a venture more than Deedee might be up to just yet. Sekhmet: Has already expressed some interest in not returning to RL, so talking about that seems like an even bigger minefield than flirting with Ace. Sio: I wanna know more of her backstory, and 'are you okay' might also cover 'what's your beef with Legally Distinct From Robin?'

That is basically where I got off the ride, yes.

Well, it certainly worked!

Also, minor question. How do you pronounce Sio as a shortening of Siobhan? Is it just a "shuh" sound?

Vote Ideas

Perks:

Personally I'm favoring the healing perk, because we really need better healing in this party. But I'd be equally happy with the athletics perk, especially if it's something Deedee could use to close with her enemies faster or play with mobility.

If we're going to grab the Traveller's Cloak, I think we'll need to base the whole level's selections around that. Nothing is worse than half-assing a stealth build, because when you need to use stealth you really need to be good at it.

For the skill perks, I think both Empathy and Perception would be most useful. Empathy for the obvious reason of being closer to and better for our party members (and it might help if we pick the empathy challenge with Ace). And Perception because that would really solidify Deedee's niche as a the party sentry and with all the hostility we're getting from intelligent players who can devise ambushes, I think we'll need it.

The Least Boon of Thorne could let us have a neat conversation with Siobhan, so if we get that we should talk to her about Thorne.

Tech:

Neglecting the fundamentals is always a problem. I'm thinking Whirlwind claws should get two full points. Maybe one in dash and one in forceful, to make it a solid utility ability?

And because I think Deedee could really use better healing, definitely points in powering Healing Zephyr up.

Campground:

I'm fine with anything with regards to Ace. Even the potential of a flirtation with Ace going wrong or overstepping is, while painful, the kind of painful I think Talia could write really good story material out of.

With Sekh, I think it might derail things right now to talk about stuff back home, but otherwise these all sound like great conversations to have.

We definitely need to ask Sio why she was so angry.

THE GIRL. I'm cackling so hard at all the little foreshadowing bits about her deal you put in. I cannot fucking wait until it all comes out, even though I know I'll have to wait a while.

(It's good to be part of the production team and to know people's department of backstory and the big spoilers.)

I thought Bii and I caught all of that. PM me what we missed.

And you did fine. Stunning lack of Gryphon Talon Kick, but you actually kept to the IC plan and did some real good.

I literally passed out with the lights still on just after ten our time, when I know you weren't done yet, so that's probably how I missed some of them.

And yeah, you did good! If the fight had lasted longer, there would have been time for kick.

And I think my favorite part was Siobhan adapting the gunslinger's oath. The thought of that misogynistic mess' quote getting adapted in this way had me cackling.

That was my idea—I did it in the wargaming we did for the chapter and Talia was kind enough to keep it in as well as her jokingly calling Leesh 'Mom' because Leesh reminds her of her mother. But yeah, she was totally going to adapt it, because she's actually pretty furious with her father back home right now for Reasons that don't need getting into at this juncture. I just know because I know her backstory, since she's a joint effort between me and Talia.

(I do like Dark Tower quite a lot still, but I know it's not for everyone and it's definitely a flawed work.)

Also, minor question. How do you pronounce Sio as a shortening of Siobhan? Is it just a "shuh" sound?

"Sha" but yeah.

The Least Boon of Thorne could let us have a neat conversation with Siobhan, so if we get that we should talk to her about Thorne.

YES PLEASE GO WITH THAT. And I'm not saying this just because Thorne is my favorite god either. Frankie Bacon made the joke back in Viacruz about having a close personal relationship with Flamma, but honestly, Siobhan beats them out as far as going all-in for a chosen god goes. (Which can have fun consequences when your gods do exist, even just as post-Singularity AIs.)

We definitely need to ask Sio why she was so angry.

She's got a lot of reasons to be, not all of which she'll probably be comfortable talking about just yet—but she's also going to be around in the story for a while, so more of it will come out in time.

[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Delvar (3 SP, Know what can be bought, and strike down those who dare sell souls.)
Death to all slavers!

Not really sure about the tech boosting, will let some other people discuss it first.

We are probably going to need to tend to Ace's wounds. While doing so, do we:

[X]Build: Power Overwhelming
-[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
-[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
-[X] [TECH] Gale Blast
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
-[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)

I'm flexible on everything else, but by god, DeeDee needs to power up some of her menagerie of techs! Gale blast has one core power, and three levels of modifiers! Whirlwind claws is in a similar situation, but one level of power is already locked into improving it, so I don't bother improving it that much more-it still needs help though, so it gets an extra TP. DeeDee is approaching her First Ultimate, don't send her into fights with M-class enemies with first level techniques at fourth level.

I'm flexible on everything else, but by god, DeeDee needs to power up some of her menagerie of techs!

When you're right you're right. That said, Deedee is the first Valor character for a lot of the thread and forgetting to power up your techs is an easy rookie mistake. I know I did it with my first one during the game I met Talia in.

[X] Build: Pinball Priest Continued
- [X] [PERK] Traveller's Cloak (3 SP, you may use Spirit to cloak your presence, making Stealth spirit-based, a Boon of Sylphan)
- [X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)

- [X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
-- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)

Gets our melee damage back up to par and our healing up to cap. I do think we want Forceful on Whirlwind Claws since we invested into damage increments last level - Reposition is far and away the best way to take advantage of that as a Vig/Spr character.

Traveler's Cloak is just because I like skill versatility and Agi is one of our dump stats, so subbing in Spr for stealth checks is a huge boost.

[X] [ACE] Flirt. What? She's cute, she helped you, you like her. (Requires a challenging Rapport roll. Could blow up in your face.)
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

I believe in the heart of the dice.

[X] [SEKH] Life before. Whether we'll have our jobs or our livelihoods back home, and if we can go back.
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.
[X] [SIO] Why were you so angry with Guy? Fuck him, but that was more than 'fuck him.'
[X] [SIO] You're into the Thornite deal, huh? I can't talk, I do my prayers, but what draws you to it?

Not voting until tonight probably, but here's my quick thoughts on the parts of the vote where I have real preferences:
  1. I'm of two minds about Perks. On the one hand, we're making Empathy rolls all the dang time now that we've got Flamma's boon, nearly all of them with some meaningful upside if they'd worked. I'd like to start succeeding at those rolls. On the other hand, I will admit that the "ooh shiny" factor for coming up with a cool customized skill bonus in Challenge Technique or Favorable Insight is also tempting; just as an example, we've talked before about the importance of Lorewise going forward and a +3 situational bonus means that DC10 challenges go from a coinflip to an 80% success rate. I'm ambivalent about Boons & tend to lean "if we've only got one slot left, let's wait a bit longer to find out whose help we really need".

  2. For the situation with Ace... we've got Sylphan's blessing, we took Rapport from chargen, and we're Spirit primary. We should not be afraid of "an easy Rapport roll" and even flirting back seems feasible if y'all wanna Go For It. As much as I'd normally gravitate towards "read the atmosphere & follow Ace's lead"... Deedee's social kit is optimized for "oblivious charm bulldozer" and playing to strength is probably the better idea IMO.

[X] [PERK] Versatile Fighter (3 SP, gain more and improved combat Techniques)
[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Ubastdjet (3 SP, Know the myriad curses and maladies, so you may cure them.)

I feel like this one's going to be one of those "We'll be really happy we have this when the time comes" sorta things.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)

-
[X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Dash 2 (1 TP, increase your movement when using this)
[] [TECH] Gale Blast
- [] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)
- [] Increased Blast Radius (2 TP, gives a 4-meter diameter blast radius)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)
- [] Increased Blast Radius (2 TP, gives a 6-meter diameter blast radius)
[] [TECH] Zephyr's Grace
- [] Ranged (1 TP, gives it an 8 meter range)
- [] Blast Radius (1 TP, gives a 3-meter diameter blast radius)
[X] [TECH] Get a new Boost technique (4 SP):
- [] Fox's Eyes (Touch yourself or an ally to grant Accuracy, and +1 to all attack rolls)
-
[X] Airy Aegis (Touch yourself or an ally to grant Evasion, and +1 to all defense rolls)
-
[] Gale Stance (Grant yourself increased movement and knockback on all melee attacks)

[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Ubastdjet (3 SP, Know the myriad curses and maladies, so you may cure them.)

I was really tempted by the anti-slaver one but this seems more necessary.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Dash (1 TP, short movement before or after attacking)
[X] [TECH] Gale Blast
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Increased Range (1 TP, doubles the range to 16 meters)

Movement before/after attacks is usually powerful tactically. Range on the healing is a nice to have when you have deep strikers and may need to support them better. General power where possible after that.

[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)
[X] [SEKH] The raid. We did well but got banged up; how are they holding up?
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.
[X] [SIO] Why were you so angry with Guy? Fuck him, but that was more than 'fuck him.'

Just going with my gut here, nothing to verbalize.

Plan backstory addiction:
[X] [SIO] What was your life like before? We don't know you all that well.
[X] [SEKH] Gender shit, and queer shit in general. They've been here. They have maps.
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Ubastdjet (3 SP, Know the myriad curses and maladies, so you may cure them.)

Improving our ability to accurately heal will be a lifesaver down the line.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
-[X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
-
[X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)
[X] [TECH] Gryphon Talon Kick
-[X] Power Up (1 TP, deals more damage; can take twice)
[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
-[X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
-[X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice) x2

A general power up across the board, along with giving Whirlwind Claws some extra mobility and a knockback effect. As I imagine us jumping into a cluster of enemies with Talon Kick, and dashing into another cluster of enemies to knock them apart with Whirlwind Claws, breaking apart any formation they had and leaving their healers/casters exposed.

[X] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)
[X] [ACE] Listen. Follow her cues, follow her lead. (Requires a challenging Empathy roll.)

[X] [PERK] Asset: Least Boon of Thorne
[X] [SIO] You're into the Thornite deal, huh? I can't talk, I do my prayers, but what draws you to it?

Bii has me convinced that this will be interesting. And it'll be a useful ability if we keep going the path of a scout / sentry.

[X] [TECH] Whirlwind Claws
- [X] Dash (1 TP, short movement before or after attacking)
-
[X] Forceful (1 TP, adds a knockback effect, can deal considerable extra damage with our setup)

I think Deedee could do some really cool stuff with extra mobility and battlefield control.

[X] [TECH] Healing Zephyr
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)
- [X] Power Up (1 TP, heals more damage; can take twice)

Is this how you vote to take something twice?

[X] [TECH] Zephyr's Grace
- [X] Blast Radius (1 TP, gives a 3-meter diameter blast radius)

Adding AoE to a pre-battle buff for one tech point is a steal and I love it.

[X] [ACE] Act professional, don't pry. (Safe. Boring.)
[X] [ACE] Talk, ask about her life before Mundus, share stories. (Requires an easy Rapport roll. Could backfire.)

This is an illegal Technique. You only have two TP of wiggle room with Whirlwind Claws.

Even if the thread doesn't go for the least boon, I can guarantee you that Siobhan's relationship to Thorne is still pretty darn neat and worth probing into. When it's no longer spoilers I will be writing fic about Siobhan and her close, personal relationship with her god.
