Deedeequest or The Wonders of Mundus: Be Careful Who You Pretend To Be - A Genderous Isekai Quest

How Dice Rolls Work
Character sheet is here.

Dice rolls are 1d10 + Stat + Proficiency + any applicable bonuses, such as Boons.

You may spend 3 Tension to Overdrive for a retroactive +5 to your roll (a Determination Overdrive), or +3 to an ally's roll (a Teamwork Overdrive). I will also automatically overdrive to avoid exhaustion or unconsciousness.

It is possible to critically succeed (on +5 on skill checks and +10 on combat rolls) or critically fail (by the same margins), but rolling a 1 or a 10 does not automatically crit in either case. It is possible to crit retroactively by Overdriving.

Your stat bonuses have names:
  • Vigor grants a Strength bonus.
  • Agility grants a Dexterity bonus.
  • Spirit grants an Aura bonus.
  • Mind grants an Intuition bonus.
  • Resolve grants a Guts bonus.
Dice are rolled on a first come, first serve bonus. You only roll for Deedee.

Oh whoops, me and Talia replied to the same thing at once, hahaha.

It's cool.

I would like to reiterate that I was hoping this would be at the end of chapter one, but, you know, horizontal right now and I appreciate pinch hitting. There's more hinting I wanted to do first.

It's not a huge deal, but it's maybe worth keeping in mind that most of the Playerbase doesn't know this, yet.

I can go back and edit part of my reply? Let me talk to you in our DM. Never mind, my reply's fine, Talia meant the stuff you're learning from the interlude spoils some things from the end of chapter, that's all.

Don't sweat it. Posting this early was always going to change the order of operations and I knew that the moment I asked you to pinch-hit.

True. And we can always make a note for people starting later and then back reading that the interlude got posted out of order and should be read when it was originally supposed to go up.

oh it's going there :D

really curious to see how all that shakes out, particularly how the IC divine portfolios and the OOC AI responsibilities line up.

(This also explains how "attention of the gods" fits into the puzzle!)

Also:

[X] - Flint Ironscale, Koboldt Warrior/Landschneckt (physical bruiser).

tactically, maybe not the most amazing choice, but I wanna see the tiny steel brick

ETA: Actually, that said, given Deedee's picked up that AOE heal, stacking up a beefy frontline and smashing in like a wrecking ball isn't the worst of plans!

Well, here's one for free, which just so happens to be the one our interlude POV character has been cosplaying as:

For instance, Thorne.TCAI is in charge of the ecosystems on the various Mundi.
Thorne, Fae Warden of the Wylds, Deity of Wood. (Woodcraft, animal friendship, archery. Teaches hunting, gathering and cooking. Helps you find food in the wilderness.)

People are gonna kick me for some of the names, not that the Greek and Norse naming patterns for gods were much smarter.

And yes - now the readers know that getting the positive attention of the Gods is very important.

Hahahaha.

"Tiny."

The Koboldt aren't D&D kobolds. Vote for this to see how tiny Flint Ironscale is. Hint: his username is a Space Mutiny joke.

This is true. Presently you're a frontliner, 3 skirmishers and a backliner. Having an actual frontline plays to some of your strengths.

I believe my love and respect for large steel bricks is also well established!

(I will point out in my defence that I was mostly thinking of FFXIV Kobolds, on account of contextual relevance.)

This is an interesting theory; what's your evidence?
It's mostly just speculation at this point. But the current crisis seems like it's a sudden, unexpected attack by unknown parties on an otherwise peaceable area, one that that unexpectedly puts a large number of unaware innocents at risk. It may just be coincidence, but I can see definite parallels to the hacker attack.

And meanwhile, we know that this is an extremely traumatic and counterintuitive situation for the AIs. They would probably like to seek guidance or reassurance, but they can't or won't interact with their creators. So one way to get that information without rendering themselves vulnerable would be to take the people who are already within their power and put them in similar situations and see how they react. It would give them an idea of the usual range of human responses to this sort of situation, since obviously their models of how the world works were wrong. And it might serve as a guide for how they should respond.

So like I said, it's mostly speculation from pretty flimsy evidence. But this is the chain of logic I followed. (And I'm enjoying this no matter what direction it goes. I just like speculating.)

As you can tell from these character names, I have actually played an MMO, which is more than I can say for the guy who wrote SAO. :V

[X] - Cora Philomena, Eithyr Psychic/Tidecaller of Meredar (crowd control and drain healer).

If we're going to be in a straight-up battlefield (even if it is with just pirates doing a coastal raid), CC is important.

Also, what does Sylphan the AI do? The weather cycle?

Out of the half-dozen or so people we made up to for various future quest things this last week and a half, 2/3 of them had really dumb names. I feel like that's goals. (The dumbest name prize probably goes to Bay o'Wolf, Andrax Oathsworn Paladin of Meredar.)

I'm going to demurr on this, but that's a good guess.

I am of the opinion more frontline will be better, especially since we'll have some support from inside the fort anyways, so I'll vote big Koboldt boy. Plus I'm always a sucker for big strong dragons:V
Also ooooh I am very interested in the Tetradekatheon đź‘€ The gods are TCAIs? That means if we could somehow establish contact maybe we could learn more about the attack from a firsthand source...well, not like DD knows any of this, but still, I find this stuff really interesting! I also have to ask, are TCAIs common in 2047? Are they legal? Is it crazy to have 14 of them in the same place or are they commonly used in game development? I wonder how far the technology has come and how the world has reacted to it!

TCAI are uncommon, the children of corporations and governments rather than of private citizens. Having 14 of them in working for/with a game company is one of the reasons that competitors of The OWTB, Inc. are jealous of their success, but is both cause of and sign of it. Also, they managed to snipe their creator, Dr. Charlene Durante (who you've met), before it happened for a project very heavy on rigorous mathematical models, the space opera online battle arena Orbital Knights.

The most outre use of it so far is a Korean entertainment company who made the first true Vtuber, Hana Jero, who turned into a polarizing internet gremlin with a fondness for first-person shooters and horror games almost immediately; the degree to which this was planned is the subject of a popular conspiracy theory, but most people chalk it up to direct contact with The Internet.

The opportunity for the cast to learn more is coming soon.

The other founders had a very persuasive argument that if the government wasn't going to give her the grant money to pursue her ridiculously ambitious goals, then the five of them could raise it themselves via super immersive virtual reality video games using the VR stuff that their soon to be former employers had experimented with and then set aside.

"Okay, but you realize I'm just going to keep making TCAI even as we make video games, right? And I'm not going to stop trying to improve them either."

"... we can probably use them in our games, actually."

"Oh dude. Yes. Let's do it."

The rest is history.

(That said, Dr Durante is far from the only person who knows how to make TCAI these days, because she published her findings/methods like a responsible scientist. She still does it best, though.)
