I'm concerned about the effects this might have on reliability, but we gotta heave ho.
And of course we're taking the engine team. Our engine sucks and our transmission is a fucking disaster - hopefully an injection of Sparkwork madness can only help.

[X] You've got some wiggle room to work with, and you know that there's slack in the budget from the Workshop 1 buy. Cut the cockpit gun, tighten up the metal use and find where you change expensive processes to cheaper ones to shave costs down.

The cockpit gun isn't really needed and even just cutting it doesn't mean it can't be added back later as a field mod and really if we tighten up metal use and make it cheaper then that should work besides there isn't much we can really do without rapidly starting to negatively effecting the mech and coming with a worse product then what we showed.
 
I'd love to grab Jacob Guillarme, but our engines are repeatedly catching on fire so we need better engines and so we need the engine team.

Rereads the update; you might not have noticed how many times the engine lit on fire, especially in the road test that would push the engine hardest.

No, if you cut a gun it's a factory job to put it back in.

Our mech has performed better than I expected. However, the budget will be a real big problem and improving the reliability of the engine as well. More importantly, we are taking the engine specialist away from our competitors.

By the by, since I was just thinking about it, @7734 how common is it for mecha to have arms in this era? Even just a basic weapon pod with an elbow and shoulder? Or is the predominant design still "tank on legs?"

Not uncommon for machine guns and primative autocannons, but you can't really put a shell firing gun down there because of issues loading the blasted thing. The thing is, bipedal units are generally machine guns only, wheras quadrepeds and more have the cannon. For reference, the old Arenee model had three machine guns and a short-barrel 37mm gun.

Kinda disappointing tbh, because unitary votes don't make people think of other ways to solve the problem. While wrong answers exist, I do enjoy writing some of the less linear solutions taste history has produced. Someone like Guilliarme could, for example, reworks your hip assemblies, or the leg crew could get you standardized so you only need to build one leg six times, best versus the present three legs two times.

Well, that is mainly due to just how badly the engine and transmission issues have been portrayed.

And also how those engine/transmission crew has been sold to us.

For me, this was an obvious unitary principle due to the fact that for me, Mecha is rather closer to aviation in terms of training, testing, division into mechanics and pilots, cabins, etc.
And for an airplane, the main part of the work has always revolved and will revolve around the engine, up to the principle "With a good engine, the fence will fly". The transmission, legs, and so on are important, but they have their own problems, most of all related to the difficulties of transferring the experience gained from one car to another.
In the meantime, one good engine in rare conditions can even put on a tractor, at least on a self-propelled gun, at least on an airplane. Given that we are just getting started, good engines would be a great boon.

Finally, on the ground side, until 1942-1944, a number of countries could not solve the banal issue of leaking oil and fuel from the engine, which made the Molotov Cocktail an effective means against transport. An engine that is "clean" of combustible materials is much more difficult to disable with an incendiary mixture or cause a fire.
