Gold and Treachery - A Trade Magnate Quest

for everyone voting to keep the tenements if we reject Qaypanu and take the Hansa loan, we can pay our debt next turn regardless of marriage choice, and we almost assuredly have 3 extra wealth, using it to increase our income seems wise. And allows us to pay the interest of the rest of our debts.

[X] [Marriage] Aiuru Sariti (gain 6 wealth, gain trade contacts in Alumahis hinterland)

If we are not aiming for a important marriage alliance, I would rather look for someone that will mesh well with us. This feels like a balanced choice.

We should refinance our loans, paying off the usurer while keeping the rest on hand to increase our income. Also, I have a question @Azel, is Prostitution seen as an unsavory business or would it incur no reputation loss entering in it? Our character does care about his reputation after all. If it isn't I might change my tenement vote. Nice turn by the way!

[X] [Marriage] Melite Diaxu (gain 13 Wealth, potential Reputation loss)
[X] [Loan - Hasna] Take the loan.
[X] [Loan - Qaypanu] Do not take the deal. (loan remains 8 Wealth owed to Sillaniu Qaypanu with 3 Wealth interest per turn.
-[X] [Tenements] Tavern (Costs 2 Wealth)

I think marrying a fellow Deucallian is a very interesting prospect, and breaking ground on this would justify any reputational loss IC in my view. She also has a large dowry, which is a big plus, it gives us more options to expand in the future. She is my top option, with Hiritt a second.

It is. Prostitution is the least reputable business you can set up there, followed by a gambling den. A tavern is seen as acceptable, if a bit low-brow for an important house.
In that case, would we be able to get better business options after we upgrade the tenements, or are the two options completely separate?

The upgrades don't unlock anything. As long as you own that land, you can tear down and rebuild everything on it as often as you want.

Other building options might manifest later on.

[X] [Marriage] Hiritt Sin (gain several businesses and at least 4 Wealth)
[X] [Tenements] Demolish and rebuild the tenements. (Costs 3 Wealth and 1 AP next turn, new tenements will bring 1 Wealth per turn, takes 1 turn to complete)
[X] [Loan - Qaypanu] Do not take the deal. (loan remains 8 Wealth owed to Sillaniu Qaypanu with 3 Wealth interest per turn
[X] [Loan - Hasna] Take the loan. (gain loan of 10 Wealth owed to House Hasna with 1 Wealth interest per turn)

I honestly really like the idea of us having literally spent our last cent on this feast in an all or nothing gambit to save our house - it feels like a fittingly audacious story that we can laugh about twenty years from now. Hiritt Sin and the Tenants, comparatively, are low-risk choices, but solid investments now that we've bought breathing space, and she sounds like someone we'd genuinely benefit from marrying beyond her dowry and properties. No reputation tanks, no subordinating ourselves to the Hansa, just a solid plan to unfuck our situation and secure a base to enact future ambitions.

AN: That happened. You just threw the greatest party of the year on your last dime, which massively boosted your marriage prospects. As a side note, while Oreipolos is not quiet cognizant of that fact IC, I have to point out that in any alliance with House Hasna, you will be very much the junior partner, so you should consider how much you trust Ghaliya bint Hasna before taking that option.
It's so weird to see such good luck. o_O

[X] [Marriage] Menodora bint Ghaliya bint Hasna (gain 4 Wealth, gain 1 Small Trade Galley on a trade route to Damerisu, gain weak alliance with House Hasna, potential Reputation loss)

So basically we take the loan, pay our loan to Qaypanu, and marry the woman that has good admin skills so she can manage our things and our new lucrative trade route. As for the tenements we use our monies from the marriage to invest in them.

I am unwilling to submit to being the junior partner in any relationship so early. Fallen or not our house still has pride. And out of the remaining candidates Hiritt Sin is the only one to not only bring in money but income.

[X] [Marriage] Hiritt Sin
[X] [Marriage] Melite Diaxu (gain 13 Wealth, potential Reputation loss)

Can't quite decide between these two. On the one hand, I like Hiritt's moxie, on the other, large amounts of money and rumored blood magic.

[X] [Loan - Hasna] Take the loan.

Obviously take the loan with the better terms.

We need more sources of income.

Banquet Quality: 3 (Accommodations Tier) + 1 (Wine Cellar) + 1 (Classical Education)-> 5 + (1 +0 +1 +1 +1) = 9 -> Event of the Year

Looks like we threw an amazing party, that wine cellar might be worth it after all.

"You have done me a great favour by inviting me to this event. A rather masterfully executed one at that, I would like to add." For a brief moment longer, she drank in the sight of the sea, then turned to you with an expression you had not seen on the older woman's face so far. The pleasant smile was gone, leaving cold calculation and piercing eyes. "I am in the need of an ally in this city. One that I can depend on. Your house has the clout that I am looking for, if those rumours can be silenced."

I wonder what other deals Hansa made at this party? If we don't become her new ally, she is probably going to find someone else.

It was not until the symposium that you had a chance to interact with the Matriarch yourself. But after the two of you had discussed the intricacies of the clock she had gifted you before a crowd of curious onlookers, you took your chance and invited her to the balcony overlooking the sea for a chat.

Interesting details about the tech level we are living in.

From what we've seen the Ealin fit our character to a T though. Also SPICES.

I'm not on board with the whole violent conquest part of the Ealin philosophy.
SPICES are tempting, but tying our main source of income to someone who is is trying to manage a peaceful takeover of the city while the violent faction waits in the wings sounds fraught. I'm sure it will make for a great storyline if it gets chosen, it just seems risky to me.

DC ??? Administration Check: 4 + (-1 +0 -1 +0) = 2

Gained partial insight into the state of your finances.
I'd like to point out that at this point, we still do not have a full picture at what our finances are at, we know that we owe at least that guy some money, but it has been mentioned that we have other outstanding ones as well IIRC, which makes a larger dowry (Melite) an attractive prospect in case of any unpleasant surprises. I think it is important we have a buffer of sorts so we don't fall into a debt spiral again.

From what I understand we are not atheist nor do we inherently support their intent to remake our city's philosophy in their image. SPICE is a meme and while lotsa money is tempting, it does not justify subordinating our houses interests to theirs's.

Are tenements also considered to be below an important house?

I think that you missed something in the chapter:
Do you take the loan offered by Ghaliya bint Nur bint Hasna? (only available if none of her daughters are married)
We can't both marry one of Ghaliya's daughters and take a loan from her. It's one or the other.

Which makes the already not-so-good-option into a total non-option for me.

Keep in mind though that instead of cash, you gain a very lucrative trade route that will start producing money the next turn.

Also, as a note on the currently leading option, keep in mind that Hiritt Sin is decidedly not eager to get married at all. You will likely need to invest some time and effort into getting that union to actually work out.

Imo, access to the trade route is _infinitely_ more lucrative than immediate Wealth (that we'd also have to roll for in some cases, it seems?).
Trade route that is open to us but no one else nearby?
Exclusivity.
And with that comes much, much bling.

That we'd also get a tentative ally in a foreign polity means we'd have ability to expand there, once we reach the reasonable size/wealth here.
That the wife is seemingly a good counter to our personal military inability is just a good bonus.

Vote Menodora bint Ghaliya bint Hasna for wife 2021!
But no, really, taking loans to pay loans is not gonna get us in any good direction.

Well, this might actually be the best point to have the waifu choice.

At this point nobody is seriously invested in quest or MC yet, so things stay a lot less bloody than they might do otherwise.
