I'm a bit surprised more wasn't done with Level Upper by the City afterwards. A way to work up Level Zeroes temporarily to figure out what their power is and then only focus on tests around getting that power to manifest again after seems like a good investment.

Unless there's some contamination effect and the power gets shifted from what it would naturally be because of how Level Upper mingles everyone's minds. Seems like something they might be able to make a workaround for though, so... eh.

[CHUCKLES IN FORESHADOWING]
I mean someones's going to do something stupid in a completely unethical way with it I have no doubt, because the major players really only care about their personal projects and/or getting a Level 6 to manifest, but its still something that I could see others using ethically at least. Like a med you go on for a bit and then they can take you off of.

Honestly, the easiest way to tell using level upper is a bad idea is the fact that it isn't in use. If it worked and didn't have horrible side effects, Academy City would absolutely just add it to everyone's training.

Horrible side effects wouldn't even give them pause. The issue is...Level Upper just works through cloud computing, espers share their resources to raise point output.

It doesn't actually make anyone stronger, it just turns low level espers into output terminals for other similar-type espers' unused brainpower, and while its managable at a low-draw level, the larger the network the more likely that at some point the output demand is going to exceed the input, simply because the number of espers with a given power category at each level drastically narrows on the way up.

They have Radio Noise, which is the same but better optimized.
And they have Kazakiri, which is using the same thing, except theres only one output terminal and SHE can duel an Archangel to a draw.

Horrible side effects wouldn't even give them pause.
Oh, definitely not for testing and such. But for incorporating it into the training of all espers? They'd lose all their test subjects, and probably get other problems besides. Still a possibility, there are Kiharas involved, but I'm fairly dubious.

Wouldn't be so surprised about them doing it if the horrible side effects were less final than comas, though.

Anyway, that statement was more "we can tell it either doesn't work or has really bad consequences (or both), because if it didn't, they'd be using it for everyone." The fact they might use it even if it did have bad side effects just means using it is an even worse idea.

(Also, I'm aware of what it actually does. It's one of the reasons I mentioned "if it worked.")

The biggest thing to note is that the LNs aren't even into January yet. For Index.

The most recent arc is less than 8 months away, so we may see the Level Upper used again.

What with WW3 and everything else that has happened they may just not have had time to put it into practice yet.

It's more just very busy.

It seems like there is a lot more happening at once then there is because there are like 4 book series now, and they only peripherally cross over.

Prequels and spin-off and sidestories, Oh My! With so many stories showing what, where and why, can our intrepid young heroine change enough things on time? Lets hope she can make it without having... died.

She'll have to leverage her tricks, to make her work stick. That's the path we chose to change fate as we pick. But picking the path to stick to will be quite trick when the events pass by oh so quick. We'll have to work on our shtick if we wanna pass by slick. Perhaps soon enough we'll be riding a broomstick? Or move the earth with just a kick? Or perhaps just snuffing the light from a candle's wick.

Hopefully we won't be standing by experiencing a re-do. I'm expectant in the writers ability to make us feel like a crew. I'm super looking forward to the first proper chapter of this quest featuring the series of To Aru.

I will say that while you don't have to follow much of the storyline... There are a few things that are pretty set in stone - Either because the events leading up to them are already in motion, or because there being a Blackout on one certain night is integral to the structure of everything that follows.

Really, a lot of the first half of the Level Upper arc is hard to change due to it either being completely unconnected to you, or because it would make things less interesting.

After Touma meets Index however, is where things can start to go off the rails.

Of course, in the first arc we'll not be in a position to do anything, nor would there be a point in trying to change the outcome. But that just means it's prime time to stat grind make bonds and find info that will help us later, we already need to learn about magic to get stronger, so generally investigation is the way to start off.

Not even into January?!?

The timeline of A Certain Adjective Noun is so screwed up.

Its actually coherent, its just getting extremely action packed.

Also I'd note that some things can happen without ever being realized by the main plot.
Saten never did find out what happened to the cute blond girl she was friends with.

...I think it says someting about the breadth of this series that I am not 100% certain which blonde you are talking about.

More importantly, finished the update for one of my other quests. Time to start working on this one.

well, when I get back from work.

So I did a dumb.

There was another thing that needed voting on before I can write the update...

All options have the potential to reach Level 5

[ ][Powah] Telepathy
- Ability to read minds
- Grants immunity to Mental Out, has potential for mental manipulation if developed in that direction
[ ][Powah] Psychometry
- Ability to 'read' the past of an object
- Highly appreciated in Judgement, has potential for Technopathy if developed in that direction
[ ][Powah] Clairvoyance
- Ability to gain information through extra sensory means
- Highly appreciated in Judgement, has potential for 'Spider-sense' if developed in that direction
[ ][Powah] Telekinesis
- Ability to manipulate pressure at a distance to move objects
- Highly versatile, has potential to replicate many other effects if developed in certain directions
[ ][Powah] Electromaster
- Ability to manipulate electrons to create electricity
- Grants Resistance to Mental Out, and potentially allows access to Sister Network if developed in that direction
[ ][Powah] Photonhand
- Ability to create and manipulate photons
- Grants a degree of protection from lasers and light based effects, has potential for Meltdowner like effects if developed in that direction

[ ][Powah] Photonhand
Like this power the best, and not overdone. But if that doesn't get enough votes my 2nd choice is one of:

[ ][Powah] Telepathy [ ][Powah] Psychometry [ ][Powah] Clairvoyance
In effect all basically the same, they are all about gaining more information, thus I don't really care at all out of those 3. But their better then another telekinesis or electromaster power. Wish we had more options like maybe dark matter or the spacial matter from the england arc or AIM manipulation or portals or something.

EDIT: With the new descriptions Psychometry sounds the most fun to read out of the 2nd choices. Also I hope Photon hand doesn't get limited to 'meltdowner' type effects, because photons are so much more then that, bending light to appear somewhere else, moving light to make a place dark, blinding people, making illusions / Invisibility, and maybe heating/light electromaster effects.

Added a bit more info to clear some things up

Specifically that these function through very different means, and can develop in different ways.

And don't worry, there is a particular twist to be discovered during the update.

[X][Powah] Telekinesis

the most generic of power

the most potential of all the power

the one with no known ceiling limit, i mean come on, i punch you with my mind have zero limit to how hard it in, and we run on math, the force of the mind punch is only limit by our brain power

best power to get

Really the only ceiling is how much effort you put into whichever power you are using. Any and all of them have the potential to reach level 5, even if that is going to be a bit of a slog. But such is the price of power. Time and effort
