Patch v1.3 : Movement Speed
Movement Speed is different between Humans and Pokémon.

Humans can March, Run, and Sprint.

Marching consumes no additional stamina, and is the same as your default Movement Speed.
Running triples your speed, and costs +1 SP/hour.
Sprinting gives you a burst of 6x speed for a single turn, and costs 1 SP/turn.

Pokémon can Walk, Run, and Sprint, but tend to have a higher base movement speed than humans.

Walking is the same as Marching.
Running doubles a Pokémon's speed, and costs +2 SP/hour.
Sprinting gives a burst of 4x speed for a single turn, and costs 3 SP/turn.

1.18 - Live Hunting Simulation
Nervous, you decide to trust Silver this time, assembling with him and Leaf slightly before Dawn, fully geared, at Dispatch E. It's been almost half a year since the only time you've hunted a real Pokémon, and at that time, it had even been in a full 12-man squad.

But Silver is your only friend.

He's not stupid, and he wouldn't do anything that would harm you so...

"I still can't believe you managed to get us a Hunting Sim," you shake your head. "What's our target today, anyway?"

"Yeah, yeah! Tell us!" Leaf chirps as she skips circles around the two of you. "The suspense is killing me!"

"Maybe even literally," you add.

Silver grins. "Today, we'll be hunting Doduo."

"Huh? I don't get it."

"Okaaayyy... And?"

He rolls his eyes, tossing something at you, and you barely manage to catch it without fumbling.

"This is... a saddle?"

"The plan is to get our capture out of the way early, right? After that, our biggest obstacle in the Safari Zone will be distance."

No. "You--You can't be serious, Silver."

"Oh, I'm serious." That smirk. Agh!

"Woo-hoo!" Leaf cheers.

"Who wants to ride a Doduo?"

...No. Fucking. Way.

"Let's go!"

A military truck carries the three of you to the Dodrio Field within an hour, much to your trepidation. Silver was helpful enough to bring a tranquilliser gun, at least, with 10 darts and a spare CO2 cartridge, since each cartridge can only fire 5 shots at maximum pressure.

Looks like you're going to have to separate a Doduo from its flock and try to put a saddle on it. You still think this is a stupid idea, especially since you haven't personally done any research on Doduo or Dodrio yet, but...

Worst case scenario, this is still good practice dealing with real, live Pokémon for all of you, right?

During exploration, Days are divided into 6 Periods, each of which takes one turn: Dawn, Morning, Noon, Evening, Dusk, and Night.

In Spring and Autumn, all Periods are 4 hours long.
In Summer, Night is 2 hours, and Noon is 6 hours.
In Winter, Night is 6 hours, and Noon is 2 hours.

If an encounter occurs during the Period, the game transitions into Combat Mode, which is automatic and cannot be micromanaged. However, at the beginning of combat and every turning point, a round of voting to decide strategy will be held.

Mission : Capture and tame a Doduo and without the use of a Pokéball.
Rewards : Riding Skill.
Penalty : None.

With a radius of approximately 5km, the Dodrio Field is an artificial, hilly savanna that contains only Doduo and Dodrio, a Tutorial Field where encounters are simplified. Supply Points can be found along the walls, where food, water, and ammunition can be restocked.

A flare gun is carried by the Commander of your Team, Silver, which can be shot at any time to signal for help, and upon which help will arrive within minutes.

It is Dawn on the 20th day of the Latewinter, in the 48th year of the New Pokémon Calendar.

There are 4 hours until Morning.

What do you do next? (1 vote = 4 hours)

[x] Cut straight through the Field for the first flock of Doduo you can find.
[x] Circle around and along the walls, carefully and gradually spiralling in.
[x] There should be a water source around here somewhere, right..?
[x] Write-in.

Tentative vote, subject to change if someone makes a good argument.

We are soooo prepared lol. Did Argento and Leafe really bring so little gear, or are we just overprepared?

[X] Cut straight through the Field for the first flock of Doduo you can find.
-[X] Ask Silver for the lowdown on Doduo and Dodrio. He did do the research before bringing us out here, right?
-[X] In addition to the actual flock, stay on the look-out for Doduo tracks. Try to avoid trails that also contain Dodrio tracks.

-[X] If the watering hole seems too dangerous to approach, look for Doduo tracks that we can follow instead.

Here's my tentative plan. This is a hilly savanna, so I'm doubtful that the gradual circling approach will be all that useful-- our field of vision is often going to be blocked by hills. Cutting straight through risks running into a random encounter unprepared. The watering hole will be dangerous, since it's most likely to be where tons of pokemon will gather-- but it's a predictable danger, and Doduo's tracks are fairly large and quite distinctive. Even if it's too dangerous, that's where we're most likely to find some tracks. Anyone have any comments?

Ha.

I'm gonna give you guys a tip: look up ostrich drinking habits.

... Ah, jeez. Probably not too likely to find Doduo near water, then-- possible, but not likely enough. Guess I'll fall back onto the circling plan and just append the other parts to it. Unless someone has a better idea?

Isn't the only difference that dodrio has an extra head? Their tracks would be the same, then.

Not at all. Hold on a sec (...)

EDIT:

I was hoping to upload these elsewhere since I dislike direct-linking images on a non-imagehosting site, but imgur makes it too small to see well. :/ Ah well. Anyways: Dodrio's foot has a reversed toe. Doduo's does not. They're actually quite obviously different from each other.

So, I just binge read this. And havent had time to read all the conversation. But can anyone please tell me why we chose oddish of all things? Sure it has a few poison and sleep powders but we are also a sniper and ninja.

Wouldnt say, an abra be perfect for us? It can teleport us closer or away from areas. It can prob at higher tiers communicate locations areas and people via psychic BS . And maybe even help guide our bullets better.

Of all the pokemon to pick as a starter oddish doesnt seem that great. There are other grass types and poison types that seem much better if were going for that kind of thing, and also way more aesthetically pleasing then the literal shit smelling plant.

All of this was covered-- several times-- during the quest. Iirc, Abra in particular was dropped for being too difficult to track, as well as having an 18-hour sleep schedule which would make it hard to train.

It just kinda happened! And there was much angst and gnashing of teeth during discussion.

I think Oddish is cute, anyway. Wouldn't mind an Abra later.

Umm, actually. *ahem* Gloom smells not of shit, but of rotting corpses. Please get your insults correct.:V

I think there was discussion about the first choice and most people thought it was a good middle ground, and a decent choice for a starter. Also, it has a pretty dope final evolutions, so that's something to look forward to.
The poison and toxins can help us capture and subdue Pokémon beyond how much drugs we are allowed to take, so that could lessen the need to carry those.
Not exactly ninja stealth themed, but most of the others weren't either.

Welcome Brother, to the We hate Oddish Society. Basically, Oddish got initially picked for being absurdly easy to capture and common to find, since this quest is apparently Nintendo Hard. By the time we realized we were going into the Safari Zone anyways, it was too late and we had already spent several actions studying Oddish.

Observe the poll above as evidence of constant arguing for basically anything other than Oddish. Oddish is no one's first pick, but is the one we could all sort of agree on.

By the same logic, wouldn't it be more likely to find isolated ones in the watering hole?

The poll has turned somewhat useless since folks who don't vote in the quest have wandered in to comment that they like Scyther. I like Scyther too, it doesn't mean Scyther is a good idea.
