Might switch to this. We could get a lot of fish, but on the other hand, the clan did say it would be dangerous to cross. We might lose some workers if they screw around.

At least our hunters will probably catch more game that goes near the river.

Thoughts?
That was mostly fluff. The spring floods are not pronounced enough around these parts to have a mechanical impact, unlike further downstream.

There's a reason your tribe decided to name it the Gentle River.

Switching to plan foundations. Should take advantage of the flood. Plus the camps and trails get good enough development for me.

Edit: just read there' s no impact. Staying with my vote.

Would further downstream allow fishing in the winter, or would that be too far to be viable to set up a sort of "fishing camp" that can be set up in autumn and worked in autumn and winter (with smoking the fish), with maybe a bit of food being sent back to the main group, and then pack up before the spring floods?

I would advise against that with the Matrons pretty much in charge of the tribe.
Planning Ideal only gives bonii to Military, why bother voting for it?

So what happened to the Obsidian Tool Research, Wood Research etc.

Are they now automatically performed by specialists?

You would have to go a good bit further south for that. That's more a satellite settlement then a camp.
Though if you make fishers, it's likely they will soon develop hook and line fishing, making ice-fishing possible.

Also, this winter was pretty harsh, what with starting with a heavy snowstorm.

Obsidian tools is gone, since the only people who didn't have any by now were the Gathers and they got either killed or drafted into the hunters, making that a moot point.

Likewise, the only thing left in the wood research had been bows and you got those from the clans now.

Further research is indeed done automatically by specialists, barring a few of the bigger things like domestication of animals and farming. Though you currently lack the prerequisites to start with either. (And we need to get to Generation sized turns for either of those avenues show any kind of results.)

Mind you, you need specialists for their respective fields to advance.

Wait what? So we lost an entire profession we'll have to build from scratch?

Not so much build from scratch as train new practitioners. There are enough people left for that, though nobody is actually doing any gathering currently.

Take note that there is not a single Gatherer Pop in Greenvalley.

Fishers and woodcrafters. That is a rather specific thing to research for a bunch of former steppe and mountain nomads.

Though there are other ways to obtain that tech.

[X] Veekie

We need to get those Gatherer's back, not just for the passive food production but Medicines, Poison, Luxuries(Sweet and Sour tastes) etc.

You produce 5 to 10 food actually. I've decided at the last minute to turn one unit of hunters into workers instead and forgot to update Supply and Demand. That's fixed now.
Good to know, definitely a lot closer than is comfortable, but our population is kind of wrecked at present

We'd start retraining Gatherers next turn, once we finish the infrastructure builds we need the workers for.
I think food demand might drop after we're done building proper housing? The reduced heat loss to the elements should cut calorie usage for elders, matrons and crafters significantly.

Definitely, but first, the homes, and we probably want to finish the hunting trails next turn and then train a Gatherer unit, followed by a Fisher unit once we spawn the pop for it. Food needs to come back on before we can do basically anything.

Between the homes and the hunting camps being completed I'm hoping for the average food production to rise by 2 and the average food consumption to drop by 2.

@Azel

Did we see some minimal development in small unit tactics because of the furious fighting? Given what both tribes have been through, I'd expect we could vietnam the shit out of the valley if anyone ever invades again. Assuming we had the manpower.

No, the food consumption stays the same. Keep in mind that the system is geared towards modelling over years and generations, not seasons like I'm abusing it to do right now.

You learned the lay of the land and how to properly use it to your advantage, though even the notion of tactics is beyond you.

Though the next invaders will have to face combatants who know the terrain very well, are aware of how to best take advantage of it on a unit scale and have a decent notion of guerrilla warfare. In a forested, hilly mountain-valley made hard to enter by the lay of a quite significant river.

Needless to say, any invaders not used to fighting in this kind of terrain will suffer for it.
