Witches and Giants: A NorseQuest Riot Fangame

Sparring in Witches and Giants

PSA: Sparring in Witches and Giants

Knowledge is Power, and Power requires Sacrifice.

So, it is only logical that to acquire Knowledge, you'll have to sacrifices something.
That is to say: if you want to acquire knowledge about how you'd fare in a fight with a fellow warrior, you can do so via a spar.
But, these spars will not be risk-free, cost-less affairs.

Spars will be considered entirely canon and handled as in-character events, i.e., you can end up causing and suffering nid, loose equipment or whatever else might go "wrong" when two Norse meet in battle.

Additionally, while it is not possible to generate new ordstirr through a spar, each combatant is required to wager at least one point of ordstirr, with the winner taking all wagered ordstirr.

Should you lose some ordstirr through this, you will have to change your character sheet to include a note about "total ordstirr earned", which will be used to calculate your PT (no using a lost spar to get another PT for earning back that one point of ordstirr ;) ). Note: Even if you lose enough ordstirr to drop below the threshold for your current amount of PT, you do not lose any PT or Traits. But, as mentioned, you would also not earn another PT for crossing the same threshold again.

These rules are in place due to several reasons, chiefly among them that running spars costs quite some time and energy...
If you want to spar, please tag me, @Nando, and/or @CoatRackRanger, and either of us will facilitate your spar, depending on our availability.

PLEASE let me know if you have objects to where you've been placed or the general geography.

Your last opportunity to advocate for a new placement or variations to the map will be in your first post of Winter 1. So a) there's time but b) there's not all the time in the world. Once we have a finalized map, I'll go through and put actual buildings on their plots.

Spoiler: Plots(all bordering coastal cliffs, if possible) 1 Tier II Mountain Plot
- 1 Tier I House
- 1 Tier I Barn
1 Tier II Hills Plot

If cliffs are a functional plot type (which still allows stone quarrying and construction), maybe my Clifftop Seidr should live there instead of a mountain plot. Would switching A7 to a Tier 2 Cliffs plot and A6 to a Tier 2 Hills plot work?

Winter 1 Start

Winter 1 Start

The last days of Fall come to a close. The first winds of winter blow across the hills and valleys of the island of Eysturoy and the village of Finningur. The villagers batten down for a hard winter to come. However, diligence and preparation the season before mean that, even if the killing cold comes again, Finningur will survive. It does not. The winter that arrives is mild, barely causing the frost from the nearby mountain tops to creep inches towards the sea. The bay remains free of ice and the fish stay plentiful. It would be a time of celebration, in another place.

The rumor has spread. Sten Deathcheated is cheated no more. While the Jarl was away, Knockingdawn caught the Outlaw attempting to flee the island and slew him. It was the news of this that prompted the Jarl's outburst upon his return, which resulted in the destruction the Sjavarfli longhouse and the temporary bodily deaths of Katla Bubbling-Broth and one of her young sons. Denied the torment of the son, Kamban punished the father and Bori Bogson has met his Fated Day at the Jarl's hands. Now, the Sjavarfli will need housing this winter but, worse, the Jarl is on the prowl and his mood has seldom been fouler.

Yet, Finningur more than a stage for the bloody final act of its founder's life. It's inhabitants have trials and tribulations of their own. In addition, outside forces are injecting interest and complications into the goings on of the Faroes. Many of the villagers have their eyes set on improving their stations, their holdings, or their skills. They are ready for the next chapter in their saga of this Written World.

Winter 1 Happenings, Rumors, and Questions
Visitors to Finningur:
The trader Kijjie Sailshirt arrives in the bay, announcing his intention to spend the winter in Finningur. He has goods for sale and coin to purchase interesting items. In addition, he deposits Toki Bracebeam, Embla Velvet, and their three children on the shore. They immediately soon thereafter, they seek out Tyrfingr Logger (@I.F. Ister) hoping to purchase wood to build themselves a home in town. Toki appears to be a carpenter.

Housing For Clan Sjavarfli: Knutr Knotmaker, Abjorn Fish-Boiler, Katla Bubblingbroth, Boda Manslayer, and four children require homes for the winter after their longhouse was destroyed by Jarl Kamban. Each adult requires 1 housing while the children require 1 between all four. They are relying on the generosity of their fellow Faroese to see them safely through the upcoming season.

Katla is hosting the Sjavarfli.

Build a Barn for Ebbe: Ebbe Tryggyrsson requests the help of his fellow Faroese in raising a barn this winter. Contact Ebbe's player to discuss payment.

Built to Last: Among the many interesting objects that Kijjie has for sale, there is one of particular note: a treasure map. Kijjie claims the maps to have come into his hands by way of a Steel-scarred Varangian whom he befriended in Hedeby. Aside from this point, the map's history is unclear. In some tellings, the Varangian drew it based on the mad ramblings of a beggar in Constantinople, claiming to be the Oracle of Delphi reborn; in others, it was the only possession, alongside an Eitr-poisoned dagger, found on the body of an Imperial assassin. Regardless, Kijjie is not willing to part with the map for less than three ounces of gold.

Kyrksangr Vanishing: Kyrksangr is a small village on an island near Eysturoy. According to Gunnar Rumorbourne, it has mysteriously gone still and silent. It seems the puffinfolk menace has slowed last season, not stopped.

Lost in Transit: Kijjie Sailshirt makes it known that a merchant contact of his believes that one of their fine goods has gone astray and might be somewhere on the Faroes. Kijjie is cagey about who this contact is, what was lost, how it arrived, or any other details. However, he insists that anyone who goes looking for the cargo will know it when they see it. If anyone manages to return the cargo to him alive, they will be rewarded beyond their wildest dreams.

Shapecrafting Available: The Shapecrafter Alfvin Arisson has made it known that he will provide spellcasting in exchange for goods and services. Consult here for pricing.

The Screaming Tree: Klaus Square has worse problems than a creeping frost or a fields full of bloodsucking brambles. A terrible tree has grown over his eastern field with skull-like fruit and blood-like sap.

The Skittering Tide: Gandalf Tough-luck, a notorious unlucky Giant-blooded, arrives in Finningur with dire news. He's spotted a worrying increase in unusual crustaceans on the beaches of southern Eysturoy. He's worried that its a herald of far worse things to come and desires a group of brave souls to travel with him to an island sacred to Ran and make sufficient offerings to ensure that "the skittering tide" passes by the Faroes harmlessly.

Unwanted Guests: An unfamiliar ship has docked outside of Ulfsby, unloading art, food, and thralls. Rumor reaches Finningur that a group of vikingr raided the Picts last summer and made out quite well for themselves. What this group's connect to Ulf Old-master might be is unclear.

Wolfsbane pt. 2: Baggi is gone and the wolf menace grows. Whatever supernatural ire was turned upon the shepherd is now loosed upon all of the island. Wolves of unusual size and ferocity prowl the hills beyond Finningur and the night is haunted by moon-crazed howls. Perhaps someone can figure out how to take Baggi's cursed place or, better yet, end the menace once and for all.

Cliffs are half water plots so there's some limits on what can be built.

Currently, I'm thinking they can only support two "land" buildings and 2 "sea" buildings. Pier, Dock, and so on. You might want to move the house and barn to the hills if you'd like a mine or quarry up on the hills. (Which I will let you do)
