Yes, I know. As far as I know, comm buoys also work in pairs. Which is a big problem. Basically, it's arguable if a massless corridor can be projected without a receiver station at the other end. From what I know the council races can create FTL com buoys – also not the point... The FTL sensors use the tech from said buoys to allow for FTL sensor pings within a region.
QEC is more than a fourth lock. Geth do not negotiate. They just don't. Heretics worship old machines, orthodox ones want to be left alone.Leaving aside that we don't know how expensive QEC is going to be (likely to be very, given the need for long-range, long-term quantum entanglement, likely of an ensemble), and whether it will see widespread adoption outside the military where the benefits make the most sense, QECs pale in comparison to functional, friendly AIs in terms of benefits against the Reapers. For one, if we have a friendly allied AI in our employ it will make a wonderful bargaining chip when negotiating with the Geth. Hell, with our AI diplomat and our Cassie implant we could probably get the Geth to join the Alliance, especially when the Reapers come knocking. Wouldn't that be something, to have the Geth join us before they and the Quarians wipe out a substantial portion of their respective militaries? We might not even have to abandon Earth at all!
Anyway that's all meta-knowledge. Revy's not choosing her 2174 research goals based on an event that she has no idea will happen in 10-ish years.
And, under my plan, we'll have them, in 2175, one year after @UberJJK has them. I just think getting a jump on AI research should take a higher priority to adding the fourth lock on our back door.
Didn't think about that... still preliminary research into the possibility wouldn't drain much resources, be it time or credits, and we are going from multiple light years to a two or so light minutes, the FTL comms don't actually produce a massless corridor only a low mass corridor to accelerate light.Yes, I know. As far as I know, comm buoys also work in pairs. Which is a big problem. Basically, it's arguable if a massless corridor can be projected without a receiver station at the other end.
Transport is the only time this is a meaningful consideration: if an infiltration team has physical access to one of our research labs I don't expect them to spend days copying our pads when they can go for our actual research. Transport security is a problem, but again as a military contractor we have potential access to military escorts, and any breeches at this point would just mean we have to discard that pad and generate a new one.The problem with this is there are then multiple sets of pads needing stored and rendered physically secure from copying, both during transport and while unused. It's an extra repeated failure point. The signal is also still interceptable and can be eventually decrypted.
QEC only needs the transmitter/receiver to be secured which would be part of our standard data security anyway and the signal can't be intercepted short of stealing the transmitter from our heavily defended compound at which point stealing the research itself is much easier.
When your dealing with research as sensitive politically as AI you can't have too many locks.
They negotiated with Sovereign for technology; I'd expect they would love to speak with someone who doesn't think "synthetics" are abominations that need to be enslaved or eradicated and takes that commitment seriously. Hell, if we get to them early enough, we may be able to co-opt the heretic movement and prevent Saren from receiving any backup at all from the geth.Geth do not negotiate. They just don't. Heretics worship old machines, orthodox ones want to be left alone.

I really think going for QEC at this point is overly paranoid, as opposed to many more real security concerns. I'm actually a lot more worried about the physical/infiltration security of our labs, especially now that we're increasing our vulnerability by expanding to multiple worlds, and with Obidiah Stone apparently on our payroll and convinced Revy is just a silly kid with no head for business (yes I know that's an Omake; I still expect him to show up in the story anyway), than I am about someone trying to copy our pads during the short time they're in transit, which should not be enough time to get even a significant fraction of one.
http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Codex/Technology said:Communications: Quantum Entanglement Communicators (QEC)
When a pair of quantum-entangled particles is separated, a change to one particle will affect the other instantaneously, wherever it lies in the universe. QECs exploit this effect to transmit binary data any distance. Two pairs of entangled particles are necessary for transmission and reception.
While QEC technology is extremely expensive and difficult to produce, it offers two enormous advantages. First, it allows instantaneous communication over any distance without reliance on the network of comm buoys, which is limited due to the sheer volume of space. Further, destruction of buoys hampers a foe's military intelligence; comm buoys are the first targets of raiders in wartime. Second, quantum communications cannot be intercepted between source and destination, allowing no "wiretaps."
That was more than a decade into the future, and it was in experimental one-of-a-kind atage then.Truthfully, I just remembered something... doesn't the MEverse already have QECs?
The article at least implies military usage of the QECs at the time, which means that it is certainly in the prototype stages if not already being deployed. I don't see why Revy can't get her hands on the research. That goes from possibly years of R&D to months if not weeks to completion of working models.
That's programming... the tech exists. But she can also invent it independently an patent it. Otherwise it would be troublesome to deal width military protocols.
Really, the concept is not new in universe, but we need an efficient proprietary communication protocol, to implement as primary communication method between PE facilities (including ships).
That's programming... the tech exists.
on that note, I know for a fact that quits are not binary, comm protocols expiating the different Qubit states to allow for faster transmission of data would be a good idea, upping the bandwidth significantly.
However the best form of info transfer for what you are looking for may be to entangle more than two subatomic particles, so that a single system has more terminals.
That's the last vote, and the current one has been closed as wellAnd if the voting for the last choice is open:
[X] Write-in: Do a background check. A few minutes with an omni-tool is not a comprehensive search. Get your security chief, Goto, to dig up more info, particularly whatever it was that got him fired time and again. Forewarned is forearmed. Try to get it done before you land on Earth, but if that is not possible, arrange to keep in contact with him, promising nothing, but you've got the entire time you're on Earth to make the decision.
-[X] Crappy ship or not those things cost big money, no one writes one off like that. Something stinks. See if it's possible to link to the computers remotely and strip them bare. Try and recover deleted files too.
-[X] Ask if the captain to take it under toe it anyway as a 'good will gesture' without telling Laurence. During the trip have a couple of your security search it top to bottom, especially the cargo to see if it's legit. If he was writing that off as well.....
-[X] Have the security team keep a close eye on the Tigers. This could be a sabotage attempt.
@Ebsion,
What would be the points for:
P.S. what are the council regulations on FTL Weaponry? There is nothing cannon about it so *shrugs*. And yes, council races can make their own FTL comm-buoys.
- Null Barrier : a modification of pre-existing kinetic barriers, rather than applying repulsive mass effect shields to a incoming projectiles, a mass reduction field is projected covering an area containing the outer 1-2 mm of the armour and extends out 1-2 centimetres for infantry grade shields more for ship based as they have to cover an entire incoming MAC slug.
- Reactive Shield : combine null barriers with sensors for ship based ME fields so that you only activate the portion of the field and the field depth necessary to neutralise incoming fire.
- Reverse Event Horizon Shields : a derivative of the reactive shield designed for energy weapons, should energy weapons be detected singularities are created away from the ship to re-direct energy away from the ship.
- Assisted Biotic Charge : Using the standard biotic charge as a template the device propels an object along a pre-determined course at high velocity - possible applications high velocity manoeuvring, in facility rapid transport and depending on the speed that is achievable possibly long range tactical deployment of assets.
- FTL Sensors : Using FTL comm-buoys as a template use the technology to allow FTL sensor pings
- Usage of free electron lasers instead of the current models allowing for X-Ray or microwave lasers, increasing accuracy and range
- FTL Lasers, using a comm buoy as a template use the technology to allow the laser to propagate at FTL speeds and allow for longer range and reduced reaction time.
- Research into how the Relays actually manage to avoid all the interstellar debris between each other (phasing could be useful for a lot of stuff if that is what it turns out to be)
They are being taken under consideration.
Thanks, kinda new to this questing thing...
you've only ever posted in this thread? You have excellent taste.
That was the null barriers. I do agree with most of your tech and if this pans out the research of exotic matter should be one of our main priorities, think of the possible advances we could make.Hmm, some preliminary thoughts on maybe a new tech. TIR is a perfect mirror (for slowly changing lightwaves). So, TIRed volume of space could be used, potentially, as a sort of capacitordb/ trap for electromagnetic radiation. This is used in Thermal Annihilator (hope that idea pans out, by the way). It can be used in other ways too, I think.
1) For example, laser ammo/grenades/warheads. Create a TIR area. Pump in laser beam into it over a period of time (arrange geometry so the beam doesn't exit the area). When TIR is dropped, the laser beam would be released. Essentially, TIR makes a perfect gain medium. Coupled with laser technology in general, TIR re oves the upper boundary on laser power. Our techtree for lasers likely refers to sustained/contnuous beams. With TIR lighttrapping, any laser becomes, essentially, an arbitrarily highly powered impulse laser (its power would determine the time it would take for an impulse to reach the power of X). Something to explore / a very uaeful addition to the laser technology.
2) Matter generation and exotic. Arbitrarily intense electromagnetic radiation will, at slme point, cause pair production, unless I am mistaken. Beyond that, powerful lasers slightly bend space near their beams. Superpowerful ones? Some interesting effects there (I am looking at you, laser time machine!)
Basically? TIR looks like one of those key techs that open up tons of stuff/entire techtrees. Just to count:
1) Laser shielding
2) Stealth in space
3) Heat desteuction
4) Laser enhancement (should be doable)
5) Exotic stuff, if allowed
6) Upgrades over basic TIR (I think Esbilon mentioned TIR upgrade that would protect against kinetic weaponry)
is this before or after he reapers?Speaking of plans... After the galaxy wide release of eternal youth, we are likely to get a say in choosing humanity's councillor (which humans are going to get). Who do we promote?
Actually, Udina seemed quite competent and determined in ME3, if you don't count his writer/indoctrination/whatever induced sudden and stupid betrayal.is this before or after he reapers?
however my vote always goes to anderson, Udina was paid off so is a liability, however if you push other people into politics cow could install your own who iix more diplomatic than anderson and more trustworthy than Udina.
