Shepard Quest Mk V, Base of Operations (ME/MCU)

Did anyone comment that we have eternal youth technology that only costs 1600 on our tech tree right after peak human? Am I the only one thinking about political ramnifications of this? Of the incredible boost to morale, to economics and to political standing in the citadel space (Asari, masters of long game, will now have humans who will live as long, if not longer than them; I see a surge in human-asari pairings)? We should do this at some point. It's well worth... well, a lot. And will give us several nobel prizes probably.

The thing about longevity is that most effects of it will be not noticeable in the near future, especially if we can´t de-age the eldery. It would take at least a few decades if not centuries to truly experience and understand the changes this would bring.

Considering how the Peak Human treatment works by the word of QM (a "healing tank" that replaces cells), I find it very unlikely that we wouldn't be able de-age people. And if we can't with that, I'll eat my computer if Extremis doesn't make it possible.

Also, I would ask again: would joint research with Sirta to Eternal Youth be feasible, and when we are planning to research AI?

AI.. while I would love nothing more than researching that now I think we should wait till we get some influential allies in the Citadel so that we can change the laws. Because even if we get our own planet in the terminus system I find it likely that breaking citadel laws could have massive negative consequences.

That's our current research plan for the next 6 quarters, which takes us to a finished point for our frigate. I just penciled in Eternal Youth for 2175-Q2, though I'm not sure how many actual research dice we have for then. We could feasibly get it in for 2175-Q1 if we delay the Mk III suit or variable wavelength lasers.

I think I remember some discussion about doing more medical research after we've finished the frigate. I'm not sure if everyone is on board with us going into AI research, but it won't really come up until we hammer out a plan for that time period anyways.

It can wait just a bit - we have a research schedule pretty much worked out I think. We should roll out peak human, and then, when the infrastructure for it is in place, roll out eternal youth, so it could piggy back off peak human's one. But yes, the implications, economical, societal, political, hell, religious are staggering. Would such tech mean that the pope will become eternal?
Consider the implications of humanity making salarians and turians have lifespans longer than current asari. Once we've done advanced xenobiology, we should be able to make everyone have eternal youth, not just humanity.

That is one treatment that I would argue should be licensed completely freely for non profit corporations, and licensed very cheaply to for profit corporations. As well, once we've distributed an anti aging treatment like that, I can't see any democratically elected politician being willing to say anything bad about us ever.

Hell, I'd be surprised if the council didn't offer humanity a seat when we release something like that.

Research plan ends after the Frigate is ready. The last overflow tech is Advanced Prosthetics which I figure can wait compared to Eternal Youth.

Sounds good. By the time of Eternal Youth we'd have had about two years of Peak Human so the infrastructure should be pretty well spread.

Or eternal politicians. As long as they are good enough to not get voted out we could see a single President serving for hundreds of years.

Yeah. A whole ton of issues.

Yeah that's why I assumed it would be.

My bet is not. They simply don't have the money to have the researchers needed to keep up with us on this. Remember in canon they went bankrupt and had to be bailed out.

and when we are planning to research AI?

Sooner rather then later personally. Of course that will almost certainly re-open the AI morality debate from a while ago.

Given that by the turn after we finish Frigates we'll have:

If your military is constantly expanding then so should the amount of admirals and generals. The answer to that is that you rotate who's the head and what not. Policticans on the other hand will have so many years they can serve in a office before they have to go do something for so many years. There are solutions. There are going to laws that make it so the older people will not have an advantage to much of an advantage of the younger. And a whole host of things like looking down on someone's theory due to how young they are like what happened to laria.

The implications are staggering. Assuming treatment can de-age someone back to their prime
It can't. Peak Human can, though. With Peak Human, you can expect to live for 200ish years, and then quickly deteriorate over a decade or so, Eternal Youth either makes you stay roughly where you are (assuming you're an adult), and then keeps you like that.
Would such tech mean that the pope will become eternal?
There is a precedence for popes abdicating now.

Consider the prisons. Any life sentence becomes essentially a death sentence, unless treatment is provided free of charge, and at that point you run into eternal prisoners.
There is a precedence for popes abdicating now.
True.

Hmm. How long would Eternal Youth -treatment take? I think you said somewhere earlier that the Peak Human would take about three months in the healing tank every night for eight hours. And could both of them be done at the same time, or would they require separate treatments?

Which plan are you going off of here? not aware of any aside from my spreadsheet, and that doesn't have prosthetics listed anywhere.

Also, we as a culture are going to have to start dealing with longer lifespans soon as well, so a lot of economists and philosophers are already talking about it. Maximum term limits for politicians is almost certainly going to be a thing, and I can see a lot of people getting tired of their job after 40 or 50 years, retiring for a while on the money they have, then going back to a college and getting into a new / tangential industry.

I imagine that a large portion of the population will be on a 60 to 80 year cycle where they work until they have sufficient savings, then don't work for a decade or two to relax / raise kids / learn new things.

I also think that positions like General and Admiral would cycle. A given officer would serve until a lot of his knowledge is outdated and he generally is tired of it. Then he would take some time off, then go back to a new portion of officer school dedicated to updating the knowledge of returning people. After a couple years there he goes back into the officer corp and lots some other general take some time off. Considering how high stress those sorts of positions can be, and how often those officers look forward to a time when they can retire and play with their grandkids, I don't see many people being willing to work the same job for hundreds of years.

Also, even with a prospective lifespan of 150 years I would expect that the retirement age has been moving upwards of 100 years for a long time, if it hasn't passed it already. The important consideration is healthspan, and so long as the health of a given individual in a population can be expected to be good enough to keep working there will be an incentive to push towards a later retirement age so that they can be economically productive for longer.

Also, if we do implement the Eternal Youth research I'd strongly advise to use it only as the highest, rarest honour granted to those people whom have dedicated themselves to improving and protecting the lives of others. Not least of which because there would have to be a massive shift in culture and population planning to account for a population that doesn't die of old age.

Probably a lot of stuff will be copied or adapted from asari society in-game. Which will strengthen our ties with them, politically speaking.

If your military is constantly expanding then so should the amount of admirals and generals.

That's why I added the "of course". It seemed on obvious follow on that the expanding of the military would increase the number of flag officers.

The answer to that is that you rotate who's the head and what not. Policticans on the other hand will have so many years they can serve in a office before they have to go do something for so many years. There's ways around it.

I was suggesting that as a good thing. As long as the President, or general politician, is good enough that people continue to vote for them there is nothing wrong with them serving for decades or even centuries.

Honestly one of the biggest advantages here is the (theoretical) removal the Golden Horizon Problem. Leaders (be they CEOs, politcans, or anything else) only have an incentive towards short term solutions because they aren't going to be in their job long term.

So for example a CEO might make cuts to R&D because it increases profit margins and he'll be gone before the issues hit the company.

Eternal Youth means that people can run companies for hundreds of years or be in government for that same time. So the tendency towards short term solutions over the long term ones is reduced.

It can't. Peak Human can, though. With Peak Human, you can expect to live for 200ish years, and then quickly deteriorate over a decade or so, Eternal Youth either makes you stay roughly where you are (assuming you're an adult), and then keeps you like that.

Still world shattering although admittedly not as much.

Consider the prisons. Any life sentence becomes essentially a death sentence, unless treatment is provided free of charge, and at that point you run into eternal prisoners.

Ouch. Good point.

Maximum term limits for politicians is almost certainly going to be a thing

Again I don't see the need.

and I can see a lot of people getting tired of their job after 40 or 50 years, retiring for a while on the money they have, then going back to a college and getting into a new / tangential industry.

Yeah I see people working crappy jobs to save up money and then doing something they prefer afterwards.

I imagine that a large portion of the population will be on a 60 to 80 year cycle where they work until they have sufficient savings, then don't work for a decade or two to relax / raise kids / learn new things.

Assuming women remain fertile over their entire life rather then just the first 40 or so years then yeah I can see a work for X years, retire and have kids, start working again after kids cycle going on.

Screw that!

Might require massive cultural shifts but there is no shortage of space right now, or for decades to come, and I would consider it a crime against humanity to withhold this sort of thing.

Also, even with a prospective lifespan of 150 years I would expect that the retirement age has been moving upwards 100 years for a long time, if it hasn't passed it already. The important consideration is healthspan, and so long as the health of a given individual in a population can be expected to be good enough to keep working there will be an incentive to push towards a later retirement age so that they can be economically productive for longer.

I agree very strongly with this sentiment (of UberJJK, that is). Besides ethics, our PR status would go down in the drain if we advocated only implementing this on the "elite contributors". Which would quite definitely include us. So yeah, no.

@UberJJK The whole maximum terms and what not is to prevent people staying in power long enough to work out a way to keep them in control forever. Having the same leader is not a good thing when it would be very easy for them to lose touch with society the rest of society.

Also I don agree with not keeping it to the elites only.

@Yog copying stuff from the Asari society is a bad idea considering how they view their maidens. Remember what happened with Lirara. That's not even getting into the fact that humans age differently then Asari. It's best done by looking from a human view point and not an Asari one.

Yeah, which could lead also to a calcification against new ideas. But could "you have filled your maximum terms for the next hundred years, but they will reset afterwards" work? You get rotation, with both the new blood and the experienced ones mixed in.

1)Check and Balances.

2)If there was a way to stay in power forever people would find it whether or not they are already in power then implement it when they get in power

3)I'm really not sure how they would lose touch with society. If anything the various future tech makes it easier to keep in touch. For example with Advanced Neural Implants it might actually be possible for a politician to personally read every single letter sent to them by their constituents.

That's I suggested to him before.

It is very easy to lose touch. Also there's the calcification against new ideas. Older people don't like change. Heck most people don't like change in general. Everything is going to require you to take a break and let new blood in.

I am not proposing it, I'm saying it's likely to happen at least in some form.

Actually, considering the exponential speed of our research projects, we might win the Transcendence Victory befory any of this becomes relevant. :p

An anyone who does will be told that it's a terrible idea by the person who made it. Asari already look down majorly on new ideas that suggest something is different then what they think. People who live forever will be worst.

That's a rather harsh view on asari society, don't you think? I didn't get an impression that they were that reactinoary from the games.

What are we basing that off of? They enjoy the status quo, but so does any politician at the top of the pyramid. Looking down on someone young isn't uniquely Asari - keep in mind Liara actually is an Asari youth.

Calcification is going to be a problem anyway and personally I wonder how much of that is biological.

There is nothing stopping new blood from getting in. All they have to do is convince people they are the better choice at an election.

It's also important to remember that the Alliance is a parliamentary system not a presidential republic. Parliamentary systems, such as the one here in Australia or the one in Briton, don't tend to have term limits for good reason.

They wouldn't even fact check what she suggested. None of them. And then there's the whole issue with the alpha relay if I remember correctly.

Of course they did, she had no explicit facts to back herself up.
So? She had enough that it warranted looking into even if it was a side project. Because if cycle of extinction was going on like she suggested then whoever or whatever was doing it would have to be smart enough to cover their tracks. Stuff like that doesn't happen on coincidence. There should have been some survivors out there somewhere in the galaxy.
