Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Dear reader! Whether you are new here, archive-reading and whatnot, or you are already someone who has been with us for quite a while, I would like to say a few words that I believe are best kept close to mind.

-This is an MLP quest. And more importantly, none of us are gratuitously cruel. So good things will happen on this quest, and I hope that enough good things have already happened to prove that.
-This is also a horror quest, so bad things will happen. Bad things might happen to good characters if you are not able to protect them, and you most certainly will not be able to intervene if you lack the tools to do so.
-And finally, this is a quest in which you jostle with powers greater than yourself, with all that it entails.

Please, do keep those things in mind as you go forward. But ultimately, this is also a quest in which it is hoped we all have fun! So if any of the above points is not exactly your cup of tea, or somehow make the experience as a whole "not worth it", then this quest might not be for you. Which is fine! Individual tastes are a thing, so don't think any more about it if you don't want to read anymore. And regardless, I hope you have a lovely day!

PSA for whoever needs to hear it:

Readers should take their own mental health into consideration when voting and not subject themselves to triggering narrative elements like rape or constant mental torture of a friend just for the Greatest Good of a world that doesn't exist.

If those are fine for you or Regrettable is even more triggering, then GREAT! More power to you. But you aren't a bad or selfish person for picking the option that keeps the characters you've emotionally connected with safe. [REDACTED for spoiler warning]

This is a high intensity quest that doesn't hold back when it comes to horror and negative consequences. Take care of yourself.

So... I'm thinking we buy all the books, obviously. Two reading actions, with something like Knock/Knock/Heart and Heart/Forge/Moth. Maybe Heart/Forge/Forge, if we really want to press on Forge for the Cult, but I'm not sure if that or getting some decent spread would be better. Although, it would also make our rolls a little better since we won't be trying to read two levels higher... unless we can specify reading the high level book first, get both scraps, then grab the third from the second book? But I don't know if we'll still get an extra teaching scrap from Rarity if we're at Level Two...

Anyways, after that we can check on Twilight's homework, work on fixing our marriage somehow, go Mansus exploring... and maybe ask the Master for a Winter lesson if we take the sixth action? That or Edge and make Selene's lesson Edge, otherwise we want to teach her Knock since it's our only other free Level One. And sadly, we should follow the QM suggestion for Rarirty.

..after the last update with Silky I nearly forgot we left with Jade's meltdown..

And you sometimes wondered, seeing how little life the mare still had in her, if you had really arrived in time to save her.
we have. It was close though.

Heavens, if you didn't know her any better you would have even said that she looks like a perfectly normal and healthy pony, and you almost swear that her coat looks to be a shade brighter now.
..the advantages of a bath and some brushing? :V

[Book search: Manehattan – Servant action]

[Roll: 47 + 12 (Learning) = 59]

KNOCK lvl 3, "An encyclopedia about poisonous snakes, with several artful illustrations", 30 bits.

FORGE lvl 1, "A small handbook on camping, explaining the basics of how to build a tent and start a small fire", 7 bits.

MOTH lvl 1, "A poetry book. Amateur work, really, but one of them talks about masks…," 7 bits.
well, Knock and Forge are both VERY good books. Moth is mostly useless, but we can still potentially use it for the cult I suppose, though it will be a LONG time before we study it, if we do it at all..

A good thing to notice is that, with a manifest, we'd make a moth lvl 3 manifest. On the other hand this book by itself would be enough to bring the cult's moth to 1, and it's the optimal book for the lowest level in terms of scraps given.. so, basically, we might as well take it. Worst case, we wasted 7 bits.

And you can say that with confidence because she has been out of it for six entire days, and not just two. But that's a detail you decide not to tell her right now.
...ok, that's worse than I thought. Still, the worst is (probably) over by now.

It was also a bit of a shame that you didn't have your Heart blanket with you, when Jade needed it. But it is being put to very good use by Rarity, so there's nothing you can do about it.
..the TWO times in all the quest we needed it, and they HAD to happen at the same time...

But most importantly, and again you hope that this isn't just you being optimistic… you think that… You think that you can actually understand her better now, you think that you can read her expression and gestures a bit better, or that she is expressing herself a little bit more, perhaps.

You are not sure how to describe it, but something inside of you is saying that Jade Whistle seems to be a little bit more… "awake".

Although, as the day goes by, you also think that you detect a little bit of awkwardness from her, and then a little bit of tiredness in her mannerism.

You are not sure if this (very slightly, of course) more "outward" behavior is being a front that she is putting, or if her memories and shadows are slowly managing to creep back to her.

You are also absolutely sure that her problems have not disappeared, and that you will have to keep an eye on her for a good long while from now on.

But it finally feels like you are finally getting to know the mare called Jade Whistle. And, if your intuition is right, you can say that this makes the two of you happy.

Heavens, you even manage to prod a few words out of her, as the two of you sit down on the large balcony by your room. You can't say that you are surprised when she starts talking about the occult, though, but at least she is talking.
again, this is good. small progress, but still progress!

[A helpful conversation – Aiding Jade Whistle on the confection of a Ritual]

[Your roll: 13 + 30 (SECRET HISTORIES, level 3) + 14 (Learning) = 57]

[You were… helpful, so to speak]

[Her roll: 90 + 10 (Learning) + 0 (SECRET HISTORIES, level 0) + 5 (Velvet Covers' Insight) = 105]
that makes us look a little bad really

Jade Whistle has finished devising the ritual she was attempting to create, a small nudge given by you on the nature of the Secret Histories bridging a final gap she had been lacking.

You did not roll nearly high enough to be able to alter its function in any way.

The ritual "The Reflection of the Tapestry" has been added to your cult's grimoire!

- - -
...that might NOT be a good thing.

I'll have to read the wording of the ritual carefully...

Wait. Your words grind to a halt inside your throat as you take a better look at Jade, seeing that she is looking at the ground while listening to you.

And she, in turn, notices your silence, and hesitantly looks in your direction as well.

"I… well…" she struggles for a few seconds, before finally blurting out in an awkward manner, her voice so low that it is almost a whisper, "thank you…"

Is that a slight blush you see on her face?!
MORE PROGRESS!!!!!

A smile slowly comes to you, as you finish coming to terms with what you are seeing, and with the fact that this sort of reaction from her is even possible. You immediately feel several different reactions fighting for supremacy inside your head, as a part of you wants to simply continue talking normally, so as to not embarrass her any further, while another part of you desperately wants to keep fawning over her so you might see a little bit more of that blush.
The second, please, go with the second!

In all honesty you were expecting to see Ponpon or another maid, but in walks Silky Stream, followed closely by Selene.
..well, we're about to learn if a Lantern 3 cultist can notice Selene.

"Welcome back Silky, welcome back Selene, and I hope the two of you had a good day at school," you say as you get up from your cushion, "and this is aunt Jade Whistle, she is mommy's friend," you say simply.
might be a bit too soon for "aunt"... but this too might help, in many ways.. bring Jade closer, that she won't even THINK of betraying us...

And then Jade's gaze goes towards Selene herself, as much as she is trying to hide behind the other filly.

[Lantern-sight]

[Jade's roll: 100 + ?? (LANTERN, level ??) = ???]

...

WHAT?! :jackiechan:

SERIOUSLY?!

...ok, I'm split between "PANICPANICPANIC" and "DAMN THIS IS GOING TO BE INTERESTING AND I CAN'T STOP READING!"

Jade Whistle has rolled a "Detection: YES"
THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND I LOVE IT!

This is nearly on the level of Luna's escape for the "fuck the plot" effect!

..you know, in a way is nearly a relief having the choice of what to do taken from us. Nothing left to do but wait

No matter what it was, you could have at least tried to say anything at all. You could have apologized, even if that made you sound guilty. You could have tried to explain yourself, even if that made it sound like you were betraying the cult. You could have asked her to help you, even if that risked making you sound like you were trying to get close to her just to use her, although heavens forbid her actually interpreting it that way.

But in the end, you did nothing. As much as it had gnawed at your heart then, as it gnaws now, you did nothing.

Because a tiny, minuscule part of your mind, the one that thought you had finally started to understand Jade Whistle better, told you to trust her.

After all, she said she needed to think.

So just like how she slammed her door on your face after saying she'd rather you not enter her house you think, or at least you dearly hope, that she meant exactly what she said with her words.
eh, she rolled yes, so anything we can honestly say she probably already knows.

You hear about Comet Feet's progress, and about how he has made a breakthrough and reached the Fourth Intensity, but will need help if he is to progress any further.
so Comet reached the first soft cap basically.

"Jade Whistle has told me…" and then your Master interrupts you before you can regain your balance and say what you planned to say.
I won't fall for this obvious bait! She didn't tell him! I BELIEVE IN HER!

(also my eye accidentally spied the next sentence, but I WOULD have believe this anyway!)

After all, didn't she know already? Can you really be sure, or were you just being paranoid the last time you met her, when you beseeched her for a lesson? Is your Master even a she?
why, but of course we can't be sure! That's the whole point! :V

"And I gathered Jade's cadre not long ago, to attempt said ritual… and it fizzled. There is no other way to really describe it. The ritual did not fail, it simply bore no fruit."
Jade I love you!

"Comet Feet and Copper Secateur, your labors have borne fruit. Ponyville is already steadily falling into our grasp, and your own followers will be able to pick up from where you left. Head to another city and found a cell. Not as grandiose as what we have here, but we need those who are faithful in other places. Specifically, head for a city that might be rich in blood and Edge."

It goes without saying that Comet Feet will follow her for her safety.
makes sense, the cult need to patch that weakness after all.

"Velvet Covers, the alicorn's… rather curious fate means that our treading down the path towards its patron is stymied, for now. We require more power in order to search her, as well as we must also tread the other paths towards our ultimate end. Scaling the Mansus does well for both. Jade Whistle has been instructed to further train her cadre, for the efforts that awaits us, but you must reach higher into the House itself. Bring me the third circle, the bridge-maker and door-opener that will allow us to summon servants to do our bidding."
well, and now "cult mission" and "explore the mansus" are again solved by the same action!

We just need Winter 3 and then we can try that hurdle I think.

If we don't find a Winter Book soon we might ask for a lesson. I'm also tempted to ask just WHY do WE have to go there, and not HER.

We've ALL wondered, after all..

Cult presence in Ponyville has grown to "Small". You will now receive a +6 bonus on certain actions within the city's area/influence.

Jade Whistle is nowhere to be seen. It will not be possible to interact with her until she reappears, or until you locate her.

Your original intention, if Jade Whistle's ritual detected Selene, was to tell her the truth and try to convince her to keep it a secret. But she rolled herself a 100, so the initiative on how to guide that situation was hers/for her benefit.

Comet Feet and Copper Secateur will leave for Manehattan this month, interaction with them will become more difficult, or at least costly, starting at turn 10.

Turn 9 choices will be posted shortly.
the "small" bonus is nice, We technically have a ritual that could be used to find Jade (though I doubt we'll actually use it), the roll = yes shaked things a bit, and the next town to convert is, as I expected, Manehattan.

well, interesting turn. I sort of would love to do the Great Book Hunt next turn, maybe I'll be lucky and find enough actions for it? We could even take the chance to visit Soft's family, and maybe bring Rarity with us to Canterlot..

well, we'll see after the turn update...

"The Reflection of the Tapestry"
-CD: SECRET HISTORIES 60, LANTERN variable
-Cost: 35 bits on materials.
-Duration: Instantaneous/Permanent.
-Effect: Choose a "Subject" or "Location" to learn about. LANTERN roll provides information based on its value, subtracted by any defenses (mundane or otherwise) that the target might possess. Information given is incrementally better at every +20 rolled over the target's basic "resistance". Undefended targets have a basic resistance of "0".
-Failing this RItual yields no maluses, bar frustration.
-Information given can always be trusted to be true, even if frustratingly hard to interpret.
-It is possible to search for an "Item" (artifact of specified level) in order to reveal where it might be found. It is possible to target a known dungeon to scout it. Application of ritual is open and vague.
interesting ritual. It has potential.

Could we, for example, use it to find the elements of harmony if Discord steals them? To find the Crystal Heart if we somehow get involved in the Sombra accident?

..Could we search for the Alicorn Amulet? shame we probably don't know about it IC... Still searching for "legendary" artifacts we read about in books might work. I wonder what the answer would be if we searched for the crystal heart NOW, when the empire is supposed to be banished out of the real world...

That probably counts as a pretty high defense to the ritual actually...

I was skeptical of the viability of keeping 'Selene' a secret to begin with. Alerting Celestia was always the safer bet.

We'll just have to deal with the consequences. At least they aren't awful so far, though we don't know what will happen to Selene.
Alerting Celestia was NEVER the safer bet. Bringing her to the cult (or killing her) was.

Bringing her to Celestia painted a target on us to the cult. Killing her solved the problem and gave us power. Bringing her to the cult gave us internal power and the trust of the Master.

now, to to see the turn update...

Jade Whistle has rolled a "Detection: YES"
While this is true and hilarious, it should probably not be part of the main text.

Re:actions, it's getting increasingly dangerous around Ponyville. When the cult finally decides to move against us, we presently have no defenses against them taking our family hostage (or just brazenly murdering them) other than a Secret Histories roll. We should start thinking of a way to rectify that... I'm personally partial to trying to hide out in the Meniscate's Mirror-Mansus because that's the coolest, awesomest clubhouse ever, but I guess there are other more "reasonable" approaches.

You're assuming they will attack us. Hell, we don't even know if we're opposed yet, or even if there's a threat from that corner.

Like, looking closer at the update, I'm pretty sure the Master doesn't actually know we have Luna. Or at least, not for certain. My reasoning is that they conducted the ritual to search for her. Very obvious, very confirmable if anybody—like us—cared to investigate, and utterly pointless unless they wanted to actively hide the fact we're hiding Selene from the rest of the Cult and made a big show of failing to find her. Which... seems kind of stupid? It would be much easier to either just say we found her and have been given permission to manage things while the rest of the Cult get on with their business.

Honestly, I was almost worried that Jade had rattled and was hiding out of shame or some attempt to avoid us, but she's probably still trying to deliberate what to do.

-[] You completely understand why your husband is feeling the way he is feeling, but you can also help him see that the "great secret" you were keeping to yourself isn't so great and terrible after all... (COMPROMISING about something, or gently introducing him to a certain thing will greatly help with your main efforts at getting your beloved husband back)
--[] Try and teach him about the Lores, even if only to show him that they aren't as unnatural as they seem. (Failing to teach him might, instead, scare him and backfire)

I think the best way to do this would be to show him our Tier 3 Lore abilities. Moth works as a good starting point; it is wholly beneficial, and we actively decide when to use it. Lantern should be introduced second; it has a lot of potential uses, but it can't be turned off. (We had to switch to simple horseshoes because the details in our old ones gave us headaches) SECRET HISTORIES should be explained last; it has an equal amount of good and bad aspects, with it's tendency to randomly activate being a major problem for our peace of mind.

This order creates a nice flow, starting out with the easiest to prove and most helpful abilities, then moving to the harder to show off and less benign powers. Hopefully starting with
Moth, and explaining that it was the first Lore we were introduced to, and the one we're most attuned to, will help explain why keeping secrets was more natural to us than revealing them to him.

Regardless, I definitely think it's important that the
secret histories power is explained to him. While the whole "multiverse/tapestry" thing might go over his head, the Velvet's distress over the images she sees and the damage they do to her grip on reality are much easier to understand.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
...huh! Well, that happened, so much for our hopes to keep this a secret (even though the Master almost certainly knows we're keeping a secret anyway). But with luck, our history of somewhat selfless effort for Jade Whistle will influence her to not immediately rat us out. Power of friendship, baby!

Now then, I figure there should be a few priorities this turn - social with Twilight, a full social this time; more book buying, hopefully we can get our hands on a Winter book so we can hit Winter 3. Mayhaps we go on a book buying spree ourselves? Study our backlog of books, mayhaps social with Windy Flakes to try to figure out if he's actually an asshole or just affecting one? Definitely do something with Storm, we gotta fix our marriage.

For Selene's lesson this turn ... mayhaps Edge?

Added to that is the fact that Copper and Comet will leave for another town soon, and you are not sure how long they might stay there.

if they're still here this turn it might be nice to spend some time with Copper before she leaves. We've ignored her (for valid reasons, but still!)

Last turn's available bits: 181

[] KNOCK lvl 3, "An encyclopedia about poisonous snakes, with several artful illustrations", 30 bits.

[] FORGE lvl 1, "A small handbook on camping, explaining the basics of how to build a tent and start a small fire", 7 bits.

[] MOTH lvl 1, "A poetry book. Amateur work, really, but one of them talks about masks…," 7 bits.

Knock and Forge for sure. Moth is a weak maybe. Could be good for raising the moth level of the cult while not dedicating a whole action to making a manifest, and it's only 7 bits, so I'm inclined to take it.

Also I hope to take either two study actions this turn, or 1 study action and a winter lesson. we can bring both Knock and Winter to 3!

Rarity (currently an Enlightened, GRAIL Level 0, FORGE Level nonexistent):

Current Health: 3

-[X] Focus on her work. She has a contract with high-end merchants and a noble family, after all. (DEFAULT PICK) (Picking this focus guarantees her to succeed, not picking will still have her working throughout the month, but since she won't dedicate herself to it she will roll a test for success) [QM advises this pick a final time, three months making a full season's worth of clothing. After that, it will be your lessened risk and choice.]

Well, Rarity should focus on her job one last time at least. We might initiate her with our actions I suppose... We even have the forge book to study to get the needed level!

Selene (MOTH 1; WINTER 1; EDGE 0; KNOCK 0):

As an alicorn, Selene has TWO actions.

-[X] Go play. (Selene will live a normal and happy life. This option costs one of her actions, it will always be picked, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.)

-[] What might be learned from a simple game of hide-and-seek? (Subtly teach Selene a lesson of MOTH)

-[] Sometimes, it is more about knowing how to react to what happens than doing anything at all. Sometimes, it is all about patience. (Subtly teach Selene a lesson of WINTER)

-[] Life is an adventure, so go live it! (Subtly teach Selene a lesson of EDGE)

-[] There is always something more to be learned from our dreams. (Subtly teach Selene a lesson of KNOCK)

well, with Edge being only lvl 1 and requiring a roll Knock is the obvious choice this turn

We really need some Edge scraps of lore...

[] A fleeting opportunity (rumor mills spin, opportunities come and go. These actions will never be available again)

-[] You know him too well, you love him too much. Heavens willing (because you will certainly do your own part) you will be able to settle things with Stormchaser. Enough time has passed for at least this much, so talk to him again. (Write in if you wish to approach this from a particular angle. Velvet will do it her own way if not.)
-[] You completely understand why your husband is feeling the way he is feeling, but you can also help him see that the "great secret" you were keeping to yourself isn't so great and terrible after all... (COMPROMISING about something, or gently introducing him to a certain thing will greatly help with your main efforts at getting your beloved husband back)
--[] Introduce him to a few Inner Circle members of the cult (pick TWO advisors to introduce Comet Feet to. Jade Whistle is unavailable for this)
--[] Introduce him to the Master... if you think that is a good idea.
--[] Try and teach him about the Lores, even if only to show him that they aren't as unnatural as they seem. (Failing to teach him might, instead, scare him and backfire)
--[] Something else (Write in)
for inner circle members, best choice right now is probably Copper and Starry. We should probably take social actions with them too if we can.. We mostly ignored Copper for months IC, and we had that illiteracy problem to investigate for Starry...

Lores might also work, though it's somewhat more risky.

-[] There is no real trick to it, no grand preparation. You have reached the Blank Plains, now it is time to search for a path that leads upwards. (Mansus Hurdle CD 80, WINTER) (applies DIPLOMACY to traverse the Blank Plains, and SECRET HISTORIES Bonus to search, added to your WINTER Level.)
is this a Winter + Secret Histories roll? Might be a good idea to boost Winter with a lesson to bring it to lvl 3, and the ritual to double the bonus if it applies here.

--[] In Ponyville, and its… great assortments of libraries? (no extra cost) (HEART, FORGE)
--[] In the great libraries of Canterlot… the ones that are open to public access, that is (20 bits in transportation) (applies "Royal Favor") (LANTERN, GRAIL, SECRET HISTORIES)
--[] In the many small bookshops that dot the side streets of Manehattan (35 bits in transportation) (MOTH, EDGE, KNOCK)
...GREAT BOOK HUNT is waiting... not this turn I fear, sadly. Maybe the next one?

[] On aiding the cult (options not related to your current task, but related to the cult or with interactions with its members)

-[] Help Comet Feet
--[] He is probably... preparing, who knows how, for his coming trip. Reach out to him.

-[] Help Starry Dancer
--[] Now that you know her a bit better, you can always just spend time with her.
--[] One step further from getting into the good graces of Ponyville's Guard, she is now supposed to somehow get them even closer. She would surely benefit from your presence.

-[] Help Copper Secateur
--[] She was the first pony you met from the cult, and you two have become good friends. Pay her a visit, before she departs for who knows how long.

-[] Help Windy Flakes
--[] You realize you don't know very much about him at all. Time to remedy that.
--[] His business is all set up, and now he has to run it. And do you know who is good at running businesses? That's right, you are.
--[] Windy Flakes has messed with you, so now you will mess with him. (WRITE-IN HOW, specify if you will do it with good intentions [just to scare him] or with bad intentions [actually hinder him])

-[] Jade Whistle (UNAVAILABLE)
Other than Windy, I think we should take actions with all the other three. Especially Copper.

-[] The matters of [SPECIFY LORE] intrigues you, petition your cult's Master for a lesson (currently willing to teach all Lores up to level 4, gives a single scrap of Lore WITHOUT triggering a test)
Winter would bring us to level 3. the NEW knock book could bring us to Knock 3, the new Forge book to lvl 1...

I'll make a list of the various books and the levels we can reach with them with one or two actions later maybe.

-[] Go into town and try to meet somepony interesting.

..I'm nearly tempted, just because I hope to meet either Pinkie or Dash, but we admittedly have enough to do already.
--[] Teach Rarity, and have her turn into an Initiate

--[] Twilight Sparkle, who leads the bearers of the Elements of Harmony
other possibly good actions. Rarity could use the bonus to give an extra oomph to her dress collection I think, and we didn't check on Twilight's homework yet.

s this a Winter + Secret Histories roll? Might be a good idea to boost Winter with a lesson to bring it to lvl 3, and the ritual to double the bonus if it applies here.
...Huh. Hey, @BirdBodhisattva with the Blank Plains crossing roll, is that Secret Histories bonus the Knowledge bonus or Application bonus? Because if it's the former and we did double either it or Winter for that action, we would have a garunteed success even while sitting at Level Two Winter. The latter would need... a roll of thirteen or higher? That's almost 90% success. Hell, we hit Level Three with a lesson and double Winter it wouldn't even matter either way.

[Lantern-sight]

[Jade's roll: 100 + ?? (LANTERN, level ??) = ???]

Jade Whistle has rolled a "Detection: YES"
RNGesus- Why? Why do you toy with us so?

And she stays quiet for a short while.

"Oh…" is all she finally says.

But your eyes shoot wide open as you realize that, this time, you see her raise an eyebrow.
Normally there'd be a pink elephant in the room, but he's on lunch break, so she looked a gift horse in the mouth and thought-

So, I understand that thanks to lantern, action choices now gander less suspicion, but to what level?

Like, how often would we need to pick the 5 action choice to reset the suspicion levels from picking the next level option (6 actions), say, four times? Or would that already trigger it?

Also, some of my picks at first glance:

-Husband->Teach Lantern OR Heart

These would fit him best IMO, and have the least likelihood for how bad the early levels tends to look.

-Selene: Edge

Got to find the post where BirdoBod describes what the Lores do to her, but based on descriptions, this one is favorite right now.

-Help Comet Feet

We 100% want to be counted among his "to protect" people, and making ourselves useful is a straightforward way to do it, which is perfect for a straightforward type of pony like him.

-Help Copper Secateur

We should honestly try and speak with her some more, what with her being the first one to have brought us in and all that.

-Initiate Rarity

I can't help but see this as an absolute win, since both Grail and Forge will help her first dress sets have that bit more of an oomph.

-Learn Winter from Master-> talk to him about educating Harmony/Elements to hide and protect themselves

This would be to poke at the idea about going down further the road of educating what is there, rather than him suddenly deciding that one of the more radical options would be better.

If not this turn, I would heavily advocate for it the next, as we really don't want him to pick, say... his last option.

-Get back at Windy (joke)

... yeah no, I just want to get back at him, without hurting our current standing within the cult/creating a RIVAL. First pick I would drop, hence why it's at bottom.

And sadly, we should follow the QM suggestion for Rarirty.
about lores... let me make a list

current levels:

KNOCK 1/3 to LVL 3
LANTERN 0/4 to LVL 4
FORGE 0/1 to LVL 1
EDGE 1/2 to LVL 2
WINTER 2/3 to LVL 3
HEART 1/2 to LVL 2
GRAIL 0/3 to LVL 3
MOTH 0/4 to LVL 4
SECRET HISTORIES 0/4 to LVL 4

books we can study (including the one we still have to buy):

already owned:
BOOK, HEART Level 1. "A small book that covers a particular kind of elegant dancing".
BOOK, FORGE Level 2. "A book about ingenious farming equipment, and how they function". (gives 2 scraps)
BOOK, HEART Level 2. "A novel about a mare who fell in love with a drummer, the romantic parts all written in rhyming poetry".
BOOK, HEART Level 3. "A study about yak culture. The part about their history and folklore is of little use. The chapters about their songs, however…". (gives 2 scraps)
BOOK, KNOCK Level 2 – "An absolutely boring encyclopedia about how the tunnels, on the mountain in which Canterlot is perched, were dug. Reading this will be a challenge…"

to buy:

KNOCK lvl 3, "An encyclopedia about poisonous snakes, with several artful illustrations", 30 bits.
FORGE lvl 1, "A small handbook on camping, explaining the basics of how to build a tent and start a small fire", 7 bits.
MOTH lvl 1, "A poetry book. Amateur work, really, but one of them talks about masks…," 7 bits.

the ones I crossed are the ones that don't give us scraps, but can still be used for cult levels.

there's 5 6 books we can study for lore scraps. with two actions we can study them, and add an extra book for the bright library (either Heart 2 or Moth 1 I'd say).

EDIT: my mistake, Heart 2 is still useful

By studying these 5 6 books we get (IF all succeed)

Forge from lvl 0 to lvl 2 (with 0/3 to lvl 3) (by studying FIRST the forge 2 books, THEN the forge 1)

Knock from lvl 2 to lvl 3 (with 0/4 to lvl 4)

Heart from lvl 1 to lvl 2 (with 1/3 to lvl 3)

the moth book would give moth lvl 1 to the cult. the Heart 2 book will give half a level to the cult's Heart.

Winter can be raised to lvl 3 with a lesson from Master.

Edge could be raised to lvl 2 from such a lesson as well, but that's strictly worse than a Winter lesson right now, except maybe for the "avoid a roll with Selene's lesson", but we have one more turn before we need to worry about that (if we want to follow a balanced lesson plan, bringing first all to lvl 1, then to 2, then to 3).

...I'm SO TEMPTED by GREAT BOOK HUNT... but we don't have the actions I fear...
It would be much easier to either just say we found her and have been given permission to manage things while the rest of the Cult get on with their business.
but that wouldn't be mothy enough!

I don't think he's ready to hear the truth of the lvl 3 abilities. smaller secrets first! start small, with the "slightly help noticing things" from Lantern 0 for example (the +1).

RNGesus- Why? Why do you toy with us so?

the answer is in here:

I hope that helped :V

-Selene: Edge

Got to find the post where BirdoBod describes what the Lores do to her, but based on descriptions, this one is favorite right now.
Edge would require a roll right now, Knock doesn't. so Knock is currently better.

It doesn't really matter much which we teach first, as long as we go All 1, then All 2, then All 3.

-Learn Winter from Master-> talk to him about educating Harmony/Elements to hide and protect themselves
we really have no way to proceed in that direction for now. I'd rather ask why can't he find the ritual herself, or why doesn't she already know it. It's certainly strange, and it's a fair question.

I think we should try and get a lesson from Comet Feet before he leaves, not only will it increase our Edge level to 2, allowing us to autocomplete Selene's Edge lesson. Which I prefer over a Knock lesson, since I think that as of right now, Selene would benefit more from having confidence/a willingness to try new things, than beginning to remember who she was.

Our Edge lesson with Comet Feet was also our most successful attempt in getting him to open up, and had a brief moment which could be helpful in getting another lesson.
"You won't always be there," you say matter-of-factly, hoping your tired mind is not veering into offence too sharply.

But you can tell that your words disgruntled him, regardless. You can only hope that you have not annoyed him enough for him to choose to speak no further about it.

"And I have been given the task to further our knowledge on the Lores," you continue, trying to be more amicable about it, "so it is also my duty to learn, even if there will be somepony else there to put it into practice."

You hear him grumble at that, a sound that is at the same time a low snarl and something that might be close to an "I suppose…"

His mind, however, is still clearly focused on your last comment.
The fact that Comet Feet won't always be around to protect the cult was disturbing on some level to him. And now he's been ordered to go to a completely different city to help set up a new cell of the cult. Which means he won't be around to protect us if something happens.

Is it manipulative to use that to make him give us a lesson in Edge? Maybe. But it will give us a good idea on his mental state, and his opinion on his assignment. I have no doubt he will protect Copper Secateur to the best of his considerable ability, but I wonder if this will drive him to further sharpen himself, or if it will force him to start looking for ponies to train. And hey! If he does realize that he needs to train other ponies, wouldn't it be a good idea to test his training methods on us? :V

Both Heart books can still give us scraps.
Studying something of the same Lore level is still fine, though. But keep in mind that you are better rewarded from studying from your superiors, as for every two full levels your source of knowledge is over you, you gain one additional scrap of Lore if you succeed in studying it.

mh.. I'm tempted by a full study plan. Edge lesson from Comet, Winter lesson from master, 5 books studied.. we'd get 2 lores to lvl 3, and 3 lores to lvl 2 (one, forge, from lvl 0 even!)

mh.. what do we NEED to do?

Comet social (could double as an edge lesson, though it might fail)
Copper Social
Twilight's homework check.
Winter Lesson (winter lvl 3)
Study books 1st (Knock to lvl 3 with two books, third book brings either Forge to lvl 1 or Heart to lvl 2).
Stormchaser's compromise.

...yeah, no room for another study books, or Starry (which can admittedly wait), or Rarity initiation (next turn we can use her own action for it instead).

..or the GREAT BOOK HUNT, though I didn't really expect it to be possible this turn.

BOOK, HEART Level 2. "A novel about a mare who fell in love with a drummer, the romantic parts all written in rhyming poetry".
That should still give us a scrap though?

Also, @BirdBodhisattva I wanted to ask, does asking for our uncle's help on another action actually cost us an action, or would it be rolled into the AP? Like, say we asked him to help us with a book hunt or something. Would that be two AP—one for the book hint and one asking for his help—or just one, for hunting with his help?

Both Heart books can still give us scraps.

you're right, my mistake. Well, that makes SIX books we can study for lores, which is perfect! We'd get KNOCK lvl 3, Winter lvl 3 with a lesson, and Heart close just 1 scrap from lvl 3 I think, which could be rectified next turn!

...I REALLY want to take AT LEAST 1 book study and 1 winter lesson. 2 book study is tempting as well, and brings Heart really close to lvl 3.

Eh... I'd trust our odds to teach the early levels, and just cause it's easier it's not better, as iirc, the higher the Knock the sooner she gets back to dreamland, and the Worms within it.

Best that she has at least a bit of an Edge first, no?

It IS kind of interesting, but I'd note that also the Rituals we started with were more likely the ones she used to get to her level... whatever it may be.

And of course we have reason to proceed in that direction, as Velvet (as the cult Loremaster) we are more than likely going to Initiate at least one Element of Harmony. If not drive them even higher.

It would be best to have Master like that idea, rather than have her/him/it question it during a meeting. Which usually tends to paint negative pictures, which would be contrary to our current motivations.

So, best to (try) and nip that in the bud, imo.

[Jade's roll: 100 + ?? (LANTERN, level ??) = ???]
Pffft.

Luna damnit why are you like this?

Well some things never change.

Socializing still seems to far and away still be the best use of our time.

A lesson from the master is also less likely to fail, and would help our job.

Also we can interrogate them. Hopefully about why they have been screwing with is so much.

Edit:
Hm. Maybe if were going to get our reading rainbow on we should involve Stormy.

Reading books generally isnt super spooky or anything.

You hear about Comet Feet's progress, and about how he has made a breakthrough and reached the Fourth Intensity, but will need help if he is to progress any further.
If I'm reading this right, then Comet Feet's Edge level is 4, which I think means the bonus he applies to gaining a scrap is +40. If we can assume that he had Edge level 3 last time.
[Scrap of Lore? CD 60]

[40 + 8 (Martial) + 30 (The Three Identifiable Wounds) = 78]
The CD should still be the same, we're looking for a Level 1 scrap. I would wonder why he only gave 1 scrap last time, when studying books/artifacts should give an extra scrap for every 2 levels its above ours, but given that it was half lesson and half social action, I think it's justified.

Ironically, the weight of Edge in the air and around him kept us on edge, and kept us from getting more attuned to Edge in the process. :V

it was never outright stated, though it was implied. She might start to remember things, and Luna's dream self might possibly wake up... but we're talking anticipating that by 1 month, in exchange for NOT risking losing a month of progress by failing a roll that we DON'T KNOW the DC off.

I don't see any reason to risk it for so little gain. and with Knock 1... at most I expect her to start remembering a bit of her childhood life, not really about adult Luna.

I agree about the lesson, but lesson + at least 1 study book action means we get TWO lores to lvl 3 this turn!

With how ALL lvl 3 skills have been helpful thus far... (except maybe Moth. that has been, mechanically, the least useful yet).

The second study book action would be nice, but it's definitely NOT necessary. social actions for Comet (maybe with Edge lesson in it), Copper, and Stormchaser are certainly more important.

Glossed over interrogating the master?

I would appreciate it.

It's hardly urgent. We CAN just keep fumbling around the cults motivation. It has worked so far and demonstrably has the masters approval.

I do not like being held to the masters good mood, given how little we know of them.

Hm. I wonder if they lied about the ritual fizzling?
