WildSpace - A Riot! Quest

Does this character work?

Name: Kayla Futhark
Gender: Female
Appearance (1 paragraph or less): 6'1 Tall woman of undeterminable ethnicity, features judged beautiful by the vast majority of humans, though able to be altered with great ease using minimal equipment to disguise appearance. Physically one of the fittest people around wherever she is. Only three things stand out as strange about her. Her naturally violet hair, usually cut to shoulder length, her bright silver eyes, and her seeming naivety about any and everything...
Description (1 paragraph or less): Created as an illegal genetic engineering experiment into creating a better human being, she was meant to be smarter, stronger, better, and more attractive. Initial testing proved that intelligence was in the highest .01% of humanity, with all physical capabilities likewise. However, further testing showed that whilst the combat and research capabilities where all that was hoped for... espionage capabilities were a complete failure. She was perfect at the stealth and social aspects, but something had seemed to go wrong with the ability to be deceitful, so much so that when in simulations to test her, she usually ended helping them seal security breaches rather than exploiting them. The lab was raided by legal authorities just before a decision on what to do with her was reached, and she ended up in the hands of the government. Medical testing showed that although she had been genetically engineered more than was legal, she was within the legal genetic modification range for a homo sapiens, thus causing her to fall into a legally grey zone of being an illegal genetic experiment, whilst possessing all the rights of a human being. She decided to make a break from the controversy by going to a Wildspace colony where no one would be bothered by what she was.
Job (this helps determine your character's starting Bonus): Genetic Engineering Experiment into creating the 'perfect' human being. Combat Skill Uploads testing: Completed with perfect scores, Combat Skills field test: Perfect success. Scientific Skill Uploads testing: Perfect Success. Scientific Skills practical testing: New research generated, and proven true, rated as perfect success by testing criteria. Espionage Skill Uploads testing: Near-Perfect Success with minor variation judged harmless. Espionage Skills field testing: 2/3 Criteria Perfect Success, remaining Criteria complete failure. Espionage Skills Field Test following retraining: 2/3 Criteria Perfect Success, remaining Criteria complete failure. Operations Skill Uploads testing: discontinued due to Experiment failing previous test criteria.

I like it.

Any one of the six people currently in the group: I.e., the original three explorers and the three folks who voted to find the colony.
I commented on this earlier, but I'll repeat it I guess. If you're restricting events to only people present, I would highly suggest figuring out a way to do content for people back at the base/if there is stuff planned trigger it more often. In terms of "interesting participation", it disincentivizes people from doing efficient things actually based on their skills and instead going out on combat/exploration so they actually get to make real decisions.

There is stuff planned. Exploration events just happened to pop first.

You all actually narrowly missed an infestation of rodents... and other, nastier things.

Week Five, Part Three: Cry For Help
"We didn't do anythin' here. All we did was find your people's crash site just a fortnight ago, then we came lookin' to see if y'needed help. I reckon y'know that; it was you I saw watchin' us, right? Come on out; I swear we won't hurt ya. Just wanna know what happened." Jack said, speaking slowly and clearly. He even lowered his rifle, and motioned for Scepta and the rest of the group to do likewise. Silence greeted his words, and stretched.

After a minute or two, Scepta looked to Jack, getting his attention with a tiny wave. "I'm thinkin' you didn't convince them... whoever they are. At least they're not xenos." she said with an expressive twitch of her eyebrows. Jack nodded, looking faintly disappointed.

The sound of falling rubble started to bounce around the charnel house that was the colony's center, and Jack looked back up to its source. A hole at the top of the pile was widening, small hands pulling and pushing prefab and ceramacrete chunks out of the way. Bright hazel eyes blinked in the sudden influx of daylight, while the hands continued widening the hole. Finally, a small figure in a tattered jumpsuit tumbles down the front of the mound of debris, and another follows. More rubble falls, and a larger figure forces its way through, making pained grunts. All told, before long there are ten survivors standing before you, blinking in the sunlight and uneasy at the sight of your team's weapons, however peacefully stowed and lowered they were. Four children, a couple of teenagers, and four adults. All of them look worn and half-starved.

The hazel eyed one - a girl, no more than twelve - pulls at the sleeve of an older woman, who might have been her mother, as they shared the same general facial structure, though the girl's hair was brown where her mother's was black. The older woman leans in, listening to her whisper something in her ear, before straightening. Her own twin hazel orbs fix Jack and Scepta with a calculating gaze, and she cocks her head to the side. "You don't look much like pirates." she says at last, her voice a fuzzy contralto. "Though that doesn't mean much."

Jack and Scepta look faintly surprised, though truthfully the thought had occurred to both of them after the girl's first words to them. "No, we're not." Jack says with a frown, and hooks a thumb over his shoulder in the general direction of First Impact. "We're from a new colony just up the way, got here about a T-month ago. When'd all this-" he said, gesturing around him, "happen?"

The woman pursed her lips in an expression of anger and pain. "About two weeks ago. We were coming into the system when those animals-" she said, eyes lowered to the ground, fists clenched at her sides, "decided to hit us. We managed to run, and we made planetfall, but the damage t' the colony ship forced it to be a crash landing. The impact took out the lower cryo bay - about half of the colony died, right off the bat. Most of our equipment was intact, though, so we found the best place we could. It... it wasn't good enough. They came about a week later, and killed everyone. Killed my David, killed my James, r-"she said, shuddering,"raped my Elizabeth and then killed her, once the fighting was done..." she said. She gestured to the dead man in the armored suit. "My brother Evan, he was a Royal Marine when he was younger... he fought like a lion," she said, with pride - and sadness. "I could see it from that camera there." she said, pointing to a small black dome above the bunker door, above the rubble. "Ran his gun dead and started beating those vermin to death with it to keep them away from the door. Katlin," she said, waving at the woman, who looks like an anti-tank gun took offense to her midsection, the only thing holding her upright being the armor's frame,"I... I might not have liked her much, but she fought good. For her boy." she said, arm wrapping around one of the children, a tallish boy with dark hair and dark eyes that have seen entirely too much.

The Impactor group is silent, sadness on some of their faces, anger on others, and both war on Jack's features. "'m terrible sorry, ma'am. None o' that's right, not a damn bit of it. Shouldn't'a happened." In each of the Impactors' minds though, a thought exists - that could have been us.

She shrugs, a helpless gesture. "Nothing for it." she said, closing her eyes a moment. She looks back up. "I'm sorry t' ask, but we're running low on food... and I want my kids - " the ones I have left " - t' have a roof over their heads. We've got... we've got nothing here. Nothing but corpses and dust. Could we... could we tag along with you?" she asks, a hint of a note of pleading in her tone, though her straight-backed, proud posture shows little of it.

(Affects the whole colony, so everyone can vote.)

Need a couple more on the Machine Shop, then we could use either a Lab or the Power Plant

Radar or Improved Garage next. The early warning would be nice, and IIRC Radar should let us use the howitzer to target aerial units.

I take it my character's accepted then? In which case here's what Kayla's doing this week, now that she's defrosted...

@Shadows do the Shelter, Garage, Lab, or Machine Shop eat Power? Also, since we have some of the parts for the Machine Shop, does it decrease the DC?

At minimum, we need the Machine Shop (so we can build gear, preferably heavy weapons), Fortifications (so we have some form of defenses), and Radar (early warning, lets us use the Howitzer as AA) first. After that I want multiple labs.

As the leading cientific mind in this colony I must say that if you realy wan't to build all those thing and more it would make sense to first build a lab so we can better research all that stuff, we are researching fortifications this turn, munitions probably the next, so according to your build order you should either be building a radar or wanglying a few guys to build a lab so we can research the weapons.

@Shadows Also, were there any plans to update the character list to account for newly acquired skills obtained via experience?

All do. I should probably edit that in... but you've got 5 power to play with right now.

There are plans, but plans are only useful when one remembers them :V I'll fix it up tonight. If I don't crash after watch.

Night_Stalker has the right idea. Fix the damn ship, we are like sitting ducks here. Then start outfitting the base with defences. We probably weren't noticed yet, but that might not last.

It's probably better to do both - it sounds like Space Pirates are responsible for the wrecked colony, meaning that simply repairing the ship might not help us long run; we get attacked and try to flee in it without some kind of shield and weapon upgrades, we're likely to just get shot down and come right back but in the worst way.

Or we find their base, blow it up, then flee.

It appears concerns about the exploration team were misplaced (Mostly).

They finally returned today, largely no worse the wear. That, and their failure to encounter any genuine threats, is the good news.

The bad news is that they seemed to have not encountered anything, and worse, their trip cost First Impact two of its rifles, the numbers of which were already low in number. Ultimately, if we do encounter any dangerous situations, this will unquestionably leave us in a greater disadvantage than we were previously. Production of new defense weapons will need to be something we get to sooner rather than later.

It appears that leading theories (See Entry W3-4) were accurate, the mistake was on account of a misunderstanding, they never went to the door at all, instead searching for a 'cave' of some kind.

In light of the dwindling number of personal weapons, I've elected to remain at base this week rather than go out without a means to defend myself. I'll instead provide a Mr. Bob Smith with assistance in establishing our sensor technology.

Much needed assistance, I'm sure. Odds are that truthfully, he will be assisting me. It's rudimentary technology anyhow, should be a easy week.

Getting a working radar system designed was, as expected, a trivial matter. All we need to do now is actually build it. That said, I'm inclined to think that if we have time, it might be better to invest in more advanced sensor technology.

Mr. Cristoffen continues to show his genius with his own research project.
Not, of course, as genius as myself, but that's beside the point.
While it's worth noting that it's not nearly as impressive given that nuclear technology has been around for...how long(?)...
It would be far more impressive if he were developing the technology from scratch. Given the technology that humanity has in this day and age, nuclear is arguably rudimentary and, dare I say it, crude in comparison.
his re-establishment and unlocking the door for us to re-created at First Impact is still an impressive feat.

Other feats of the week have likewise proceeded in line with our hopes. With great assistance from a Mr. Nevill
Who we might want to keep a close eye on - it's no secret at all that the man is crazy, and not the good kind. The real secret is how he manages to function as well as he does as an individual in spite of this.
most the colony established a series of farms, ensuring that we'll have no fear of starvation anytime soon. With that, First Impact should be well established, allowing us to truly start getting underway with less fundamental and more exciting ventures.

I sense a bit of a panic has begun to set in at First Impact. I should have known something like this was on the way.

The search team has reported back from following the trail from the other colony wreck. Long story short, it's a disaster. The remains of the other colony, that is. I shall not detail the full situation myself, only include a copy of the overall report on the situation.

Ultimately, there are survivors, though for some reason I can only imagine, there's currently a debate on whether to bring them back to First Impact or not. Fortunately, only two have actively spoken out against letting them come - Mr. "Steve" and Mr. Meir Lochan - anyone else who's commented has unquestionably agreed they should be invited in.

Even if they didn't come, there has been an unquestioned impact on the state of things here, though not nearly as bad as they could be. There is, still, very much a sense of organization, rather than a panicked chaos. Defenses have taken on a sudden urgency, while some have taken to focusing on repairing the ship, a machine shop appears to be the other priority of the week.

On further consideration, perhaps it would be wrong to say that things are 'not nearly as bad as they could be'; to the contrary, to further consider it and look at it from another angle, the sense of danger has given some a sense of drive that I believe can be explained by an underlying survival instinct.

Can I get a tally? Thirteen of nineteen have thrown their votes in, and so long as the remainder toss me a vote in between me getting the tally and finishing the update I'll write accordingly.
