Vorstallen Magic Preparatory - The Third-Best School for Young Mages in the Nation! Enrol Today!

Really liked the Miranova part, the whole conversation but especially the end. She seems like an example of a successful high Willpower mage.

So the Map gives us a pretty decent boost to our rolls. And we still need to at the least take a Defend to prevent enemy actions from messing with our exams.

Hope we still have enough time to still complete the Keys and retaliate against our rival.

What worries me about our rival is if victory is even possible. If we are able to mess him up so badly that his family pulls him out of the Vorstallan that would be one thing, but if we aren't able to we are left with a powerful enemy who is even more angry with us.

Because of that I favor defense and until we get to a point where we have the support that he can't easily mess with us.

We have the threat of the Trade Deal. Now is basically the best time to retaliate since it has the highest chance of having the dude be pulled off for fear of messing with the Trade Deal along with the kid's education.

Oh, huh. Solved more of it than I expected. Fair winds for once, thanks be.

And we get a bit more Miranova. Honestly enjoy her the most, and wish Ulos wasn't so dung at Spirits.

And I am honestly considering subjecting Ulos to Tea again if she'd actually let us...It was an awful action drain, but did have some benefit. Would be a repeat of the beats though, she/QM more likely to make Ulos do something else for her amusement I feel.

9.1.2 - Exam Prep and Classes
Rolls - 17 + 29 = 46. Two-step success. Another 100% of Theory score added to Exam score.

22 + 29 = 51. Two-step success. Another 100% of Theory score added to Exam score.

Current Theory Exam Score = 29 * 13.5 = 392.

It had been a tough week, last week. This week.. Ulos hesitated to call it easier. His focus on the map and Miranova's puzzles had left him with little enough time, and while he studied to his utmost for the exam, it simply didn't work as he had hoped. He continued bettering himself, memorizing pieces of theory he needed for the exam, but... He just couldn't quite focus. Perhaps it was arrogance, or perhaps it was his worries about Inukar. He wasn't entirely sure.

The new electives came out this week. Ulos chose quickly. He only had two electives - Alchemy and Runes, and he wasn't exactly gifted with much choice if he was to live up to his end of the bargain with Edward. Better to get in early.

Professor Junotrin looked at them all again, and sighed. He felt like she was barely teaching history at this point - her lesson today consisted of a series of anecdotes about Narubite sailors. Ulos didn't see the relevance, and learned little.

Lore: Six-Fox Pact was +10 (6/20) now +10 (14/20)

Miranova was hardly any different. Now she had given them all a challenge, she lectured on about a few things, but seemed mostly disinterested. Halfway through the lesson she conjured up a massive book, had it turn pages automatically, and simply left the classroom. If Ulos hadn't known more about her, he would've assumed she was an incompetent. As it stood, he thought she was simply bored.

Lore Souls and Spirits now +12 (5/20 next level) to +12 Souls and Spirits (10/20 next level)

Spellweaving, well. Ulos felt as though he himself had somewhat given up on the class. He had put virtually no effort in, and stood close to the bottom of his class at it was. Still, with his talent he was more-or-less guaranteed to be in the same class next term, so why bother? He had focused on classes and opportunities that existed, skills for the same of gaining more and growing more, not skills for the sake of mere skills.

Spellweaving +8 (6/10 next level) to +8 (8/10 next level)

It was only Magical Theory where he suddenly excelled. His constant studying had not gone awry, and he kept up with Edward better than before. Or perhaps Edward was simply more lenient on him, having gotten something out of him. He wasn't sure, but did it really matter? Concepts came to him easily, he answered questions and pieces of theory and sketched equations like he felt he had never done before.

Edward looked at him with what felt like new eyes. Ulos felt surer in his choice than ever before. If Edward could teach him and help him, why not attach himself to his rise? Inukar wanted him to be cautious, but with Edward... Ulos felt there were chances to rise. Perhaps not the highest of all, but...

He had risen higher than he had ever hoped when he had come to Vorstallen. And even then his hopes were low enough. Become a mage, a powerful, wealthy, safe member of society. Those dreams had dissolved after a few weeks, after meeting new enemies and new friends. Every time he saw the heights of what was possible his ambitions grew to match. He might not eclipse Edward, or Madavian's family, or some great mages, but... why shouldn't he one day be counted among them?

A piece of desire Ulos had rarely acknowledged bubbled up in his heart. Inukar had asked him why not settle for less. As he sketched a perfect sphere in chalk and began drawing algebraic symbols over it, part of him asked what he thought was a better question. Why settle for less? Why settle at all, when the world was there for the taking?

(3+3+5+3+5+1)=20+5=25*4=100 steps.

+29 Magical Theory (0/35 next level) to +31 Magical Theory (25/40 next level)

9.2.V - Week 9 Weekend Vote
You presently have 0 Willpower. 2 Willpower is locked behind your Locked Action, Tutoring Session: Magical Theory. 1 Willpower is locked behind Tutor Your Friends, giving Ulos a total of 2 Willpower per week. The pool regenerates after this turn.

Ulos will take 4 Actions, but one of these is locked in as Tutor Your Friends. You cannot unlock this without abandoning the Tutoring Sessions entirely. As such, only 3 Actions will be taken from this list.

Newly Unlocked Actions:

None at the moment.

Temporary/One-Off Actions:

None at the moment.

Exam Actions:

[ ] Exam Prep (Subject) - Begin exam preparations! DC 20/40/80/100/1?? vs relevant skill. This only increases your exam results and has no associated Training Roll or other benefit. Willpower Upgrade - gain a second roll.

[ ] Six Parts to the Key - Start searching for Miranova's hidden challenges. DC ???. Can be taken multiple times. Willpower Upgrade - every failed roll (not including rerolls) is rerolled.

Offensive/Defensive Actions:

[ ] Scout out your Rivals - Pretty standard. Go spy on your enemies. Roll vs your Rival's roll to avoid being scouted. If you beat their Roll, gain +20 on all Actions against them (defensive or offensive) for the remainder of the week. The Magical Map Offers an additional +40 to this Action, as well as +40 to Launch an Assault.

[ ] Launch an Assault! - You have Itching Powder now, you can do something terrible (ly amusing)! Make your enemies itch in class to humiliate them, douse their clothes in it to force them to miss valuable learning sessions, or even convince onlookers they have some sort of disease. Roll vs your Rival's roll to succeed. A regular success will cause an automatic failure on their next Action. A major success will cause an automatic failure on their next Action and their classes for that day. A critical success will cause both these effects and cause them to be humiliated, reducing all Relationships with anyone who observes this humiliation by one step. The Magical Map Offers an additional +40 to this Action

[ ] The Brickworks - Use your newfound tools and knowledge to carve up some sweet, sweet Slumbering Bricks. Litter the walkways with them, put them anywhere you tend to go as long as they can be reasonably hidden. Offers a chance for any confrontation to involve a Slumbering Brick that you and your friends can activate. Slumbering Bricks allow an automatic escape from almost any situation, or alternatively a free attack on your opponent. Will take a lot of time and effort. Roll against DC 20 (-1 from former Willpower upgrades) vs Craft: Rune up to 8 times, or until you fail. The first eight successes (this Action may be taken multiple times - successes refers to number of successes on all Brickworks Actions) will offer you and your three friends up to one brick apiece if they do not already have one, which offers a 50% chance to withdraw from a hostile situation. Each success after that offers a +5% chance for any confrontation on campus to involve a Slumbering Brick, which will offer an automatic withdrawal from hostile situations, capping at a 95% chance. Willpower upgrade - By focusing hard on this task and working to discover the best ways to etch runes in clay and bricks, all Clay Rune DCs are reduced by 1.

Current Bricks:
Ulos, Madavian, Henrietta, Abraham

No bricks on campus.

Training Actions:

[ ] Start Studying (Write-In Subject) - You have your textbooks. Next step is reading through them. Sort of nerdy, but hey, aren't you here to learn? Gain a Training Roll associated with the subject you choose. Willpower upgrade - spend 1 point to gain 2 Training Rolls. -1 to all Training Rolls of this sort due current roommate penalty.

[ ] Relentlessly Practice Magical Combat -
Use some of your little magic to practice your Spellweaving. Abraham will help you, using his progidious Magic Pool to help you deal with, avoid, and retreat from spells. Gain a Training Roll on the lower of Combat: Evasion and Combat: Retreat, as well as a Training Roll vs Channeling. This will help Abraham practice his own Magical Combat. Willpower Upgrade offers a second Training Roll for the applicable Combat Skill. Shooting at you with fireballs is not easy for Abraham, who will spend 1 Willpower undertaking this Action.

[ ] Study Group - The Study Group needs to get going if you're going to dominate your subjects. Get your books, get your bag, and head on over to the Library to get the librarians to let you into a study room. Gain a Training Roll for Lore: Magical Theory of Magic or Lore: Six-Fox Pact. 20% chance for Relationship improvement (DC 80). Willpower upgrade - spend 1 point to gain two Training Rolls. Can only be taken twice per Week max.

[ ] Study to Resist Mind Magic -
You don't know anything about mind magic or illusions at all, but you figure you can probably find a way to learn to resist them some, surely? Then again, it's an elective. It might be more efficient to learn about this later... Gain a Training Roll associated with Lore: Illusions. With sufficient effort you can learn Skill: Perceive Illusion, and perhaps even Spell: Break Illusion. Willpower upgrade - spend 1 point to gain 2 Training Rolls.

[ ] Practice Spell (Write-In From Spellbook) -
Time to practice a spell. Get better, cast faster, cast cheaper. Roll against DC (??? depends on Spell). Takes ??? Magic Pool, where ??? is equal to a Spell's cost times 5. Character gains an additional Training roll if they still have more mana after practicing. Willpower upgrade - spend 1 point to gain an additional two Training Rolls if you have enough mana for it.

Diplomacy and Discovery Actions:

[ ] Hang Out With A Friend (Write-in Friend) - It's good to spend time with people you know. Maybe take a break, and hang with one of your friends. Available options include Madavian Junotrin, Henrietta Aufstadt, and Abraham Quincey. Increase Relationship by one step. Roll against DC (Variable, depending on friendship level). On success, increase Relationship by another step.

[ ] Madavian's Speed Dating Agency - With Madavian here to help you, you'll have an easier time of meeting new people. Gain two Diplomacy Rolls. Madavian's presence also offers one reroll, mitigating any unpleasant social consequences (reroll will be taken after both rolls, reroll will prioritize Critical Failures over regular Failures). Willpower upgrade - Spend 1 point to gain a third Diplomacy Roll.

[ ] Go Exploring - It's a big campus, and you haven't seen the half of it. Who knows what you could find? Roll 1D100 vs ???. Success offers ???, failure offers ???. Willpower upgrade - spend 1 point to gain a second roll. Spend 2 points to gain a third roll.

[ ] Study your Magic Pool - You need to learn to meditate, focus, and understand what is happening in the Ether, and in yourself when you draw from it. Gaining such inner understanding may shed light on your Curse's functionality. Gain a Training Roll for Skill: Arcane Meditation versus Willpower.

[ ] Suck Up To Inukar/Miranova -
Figure out what they like. Do the research. Then suck up. Not hard in theory. Roll against DC 80 (Inukar) and DC 40 (Miranova) vs Cha and the teacher's class Lore skill. Success increases teacher's Relationship by one step and future DC of this Action sharply.

Crafting, Gathering & Shopping Actions:

[ ] Gather Mushrooms - Unlocked by your knowledge of the Secret Mushroom Colony. Self-explanatory. Roll against DC ??? using either Lore: Alchemy or Lore: Magical Plants. On success, gain ???.

[ ] Go to the Marketplace - You have money to spend and items to sell. You need to spend some time gearing up, finding tutors, spells, artifacts, items, and more. Activates Shopping Mini-Turn with more Actions within it (including "Find a Buyer" for your items), allowing the buying and selling of items and services.

[ ] Search for Ingredients -
You don't know about a whole lot of Alchemical Ingredients, but you can go looking. Even if you don't find exactly what you're looking for, you can scout out good places. Roll against DC ???. On success, find Ingredients. On critical success find a Location with Ingredients.

[ ] Family Money - Madavian would be happy to send away for money on your behalf (or spend some of his money on you and then replenish it later). However, he'd need a good reason to do so. Reason must be written in if no reason has come up in the thread. No Skill gains. Madavian rolls Cha vs DC (Variable) to gain a Variable number of Coins.

Locked Actions:

[ ] Craft Alchemical Recipe (Write-In) - Time to get your Alchemy on! Get in there and make something useful! Roll against DC ??? (depends on Recipe). Success adds Recipe to Inventory. Locked. Requires at least 1 rank in Craft: Alchemy. Requires access to Alchemical Equipment.

Spellweaving, well. Ulos felt as though he himself had somewhat given up on the class.
This is just sad.

So, finishing the Keys should be a no brainer for this turn. What else though? Do we go for Scout Rivals?

We still have 1 more week before exams right? Though an assault 1 week before exams seem stupidly obvious thing to expect, so it might run into an active Action spent defending against it.

I'm inclined to putting at least one more action into Theory prep, but that may be conservative/defensive. We are at the upper reach of our 'given' range for the top 10%, outliers excluded...theoretically, Ulos should be one of those outliers but we don't get anything concrete from that. There are probably less concrete benefits to being definitively first though, or less concrete demerits if Ulos is anything less given that he's been tutored by Edward for so long.

Other than that, I think now is as good a time to return to Study Group as ever. Other things are not so pressing.

And I would, of course, also like Ulos to keep plugging away at Six Parts to the Key, though maybe he should wait until he has some more Willpower for that. The last two puzzles, I expect to take a Willpower action each. Maybe pessimistic but important for budgeting purposes.

My runner up, which I will put up instead of a naked Six Parts action, is Family Money. Ulos just signed up for Alchemy elective but has no gear. It could also just be a generic Market action if we think 191 coins is enough for now. I also considered Exploring, because I like exploring, and Study Magic Pool, because it is important.

With a new semester looming large and our room overcrowded, could we see if Madavian's family could spring for off campus housing? Or would that be something they would be unwilling to do considering his dad wanted him to come to this dorm?

Can we put a contingent action to repeat say Six Parts to the Key if we fail it the first time around?

This is Edward, right?

Are exams next week or the week after? How is that going to work, do we get normal actions and those count as classes?

Question was answered here:
This was my fault - I posted exam details but forgot to post the roster!

Magical Theory & Magical Awareness are Week 1.

In practice, you'll get all your Weekday Actions before the exam takes off, rather than trying to specify days and work around that.

History & Spirits are Week 2.

In term of Action numbers, I'm inclined to keep it at 4 without any pressing reason to think otherwise. My initial plans were to increase Action numbers, but I think I prefer to keep things consistent where possible. My current plans for Exam weeks (and Holiday weeks if you choose not take one of the offered Adventures up when the exam period ends - a note on this, you'll have at least one Adventure available minimum, but good relationships with people or impressing them in some way is likely to unlock more.) is to offer a Time bonus you can apply to Actions not dissimilar to a Willpower one, or maybe just increase the number of Willpower points available that week - making your Actions more effective but leaving you with the same number.

On sabotaging our rival:

Wouldn't a sabotage action the first week of the exams be even more effective than one now? Or second week, seeing as for some bizarro reason the senator's son is locked in for alchemy and elective exams are second week. Also since it doesn't really pay off to prep hard for our electives (unless we we want to aim for the memorization potion prize in History), we'll have the actions to spare.

So, finishing the Keys should be a no brainer for this turn. What else though? Do we go for Scout Rivals?

Out of the box idea:

[ ] Madavian's Speed Dating Agency
Hear me out: exams are coming up, so people that have been slacking on magical theory are starting to panic. The fact that we're the best in our class, and are already tutoring our friends means that some people might actually be interested in talking to us! Here's to hoping we finally make an influential Narubite friend to offset Nationalist Malfoy Thomas' influence over his fellow countrymen.

Not doing Scouting now seems like a waste of the finished map though.

The scouting action is most effective when taken at the start of the week though, as it then applies to the week and the weekend both.

Casting my vote, let's see if we can coax people into being our friends with the power of Learning™.

Yeah I'm not sure about the speed dating, not that it isn't a good option by itself, but whether doing it now has more benefit.

The Key I think we are still a couple actions from figuring out, especially with our normal rolls. I really want to get it done before we look towards the future, getting it almost solved would end up being a huge waste of actions (well not a total waste since we just got opinion up).

The logic behind this is sound given other students should really be panicking at this point particularly if they have their family looking over their shoulders

Meeting new people means more social ties, they could have specialties themselves, they could pay for tutoring for extra cash on the side or just in general future favours.
