Vespa

I'm just imagining E88 lines up against her, and she just sprays a stream of venom across their line, taking out all of them at once.

Except Alabaster, who resets and wishes he was dead.

Taylor doesn't know martial arts though, or how to drive. Thus while she is her own transportation, she can't meet the criteria of a hyper competent martial artist/driver as sidekick.
Hookwolf begs to differ. Or. Well. He presumably would have done, if he had retained consciousness for any length of time after she rammed into him at speed... Taylor may not be trained in a formalized martial art, but no formal martial arts are designed for people who can pick and choose how many appendages they have, and in what configuration. She's lethal to the point of overkill without weaponry or other armament, and extremely defensible, which I think is probably close enough to qualify for someone whose preferred bauplan is definitely not humanoid and thus cannot have a tradition or culture of combat training that we'd recognize as such.

It's true that she's not her own driver, though, I will give you that.

As, indeed, she did :D

Next she'll be figuring out crimes... ;)
She's already figured out crimes... crimes against nature, perversions of the natural order. Muwhahahaha... oops, sorry, that sorta slipped out

As soon as she figures out RGB encoding for her bioluminescence, she'll be able to program cognito hazards, or maybe warning stripes, on her drider thorax and abdomen, possibly even her human half. Ahahaha, she can turn solid green when she gets angry!

James shrugged again. "No idea, really. Projection or Case 53 seems the most likely. Biotinker is possible but we've never heard of one that makes insects before, and the problem there is that it can't be an actual insect no matter what it looks like from researching it a little. Insects can't grow that large. I don't understand the science but there's a limit, and that fucking thing is way past it. So leaving aside the appearance it's got to be something else than a normal insect on a huge scale. Projection is probably the least unlikely explanation, I think."
...How does this swastika-themed vegetable platter fail to even have Changer on their list of explanations?

They dumb or more seriously blind confidence and they literally didn't think of it
They spend a not inconsiderable amount of their time thinking about Lung. The strongest cape in the Bay is a Changer!
I think the 'correct enough that entomologist can identify the species' giant hornet form vs an unrecognizable form throws off thoughts of changer...
...But not of Case 53?

EDIT: Actually, come to think, nobody's suggested a re-sizing effect. Shaker, I guess, since that's the bin for 'we don't say wizard'. It's admittedly a bad fit for the data since a natural Asian Giant Hornet just embiggened would not be likely to deliver small injured parahumans to hospitals.

Armsmaster… he's a really good Tinker and seems to be pretty careful when he's involved in something.
I'm always surprised why Armsmaster is called a good/great Tinker. Maybe my head is a mishmash of fan fiction, but I can't remember a single "great" invention of his. He didn't create the shield around the platform, he didn't create the bridge to the platform either, and when the bridge broke, Armsmaster couldn't fix it. Yes, he created armor, a halberd, and a bike. But he created all of this for himself in a fit of selfishness. (Chris also has armor, a hoverboard (which I think is cooler than a bike), and a laser pistol (which is again cooler than an axe on a long handle)). How can he be put on the same level as the Dragon? The Dragon runs a business, has several factories, and produces products that are in demand in many areas (drones, communications and security equipment, watches the "bird cage"). And what does Armsmaster do? Writes a program that will check your honesty in violation of the law (in most countries, as far as I know, the use of a lie detector without warning and sanction of the court and / or prosecutor is illegal).
I do not remember Armsmaster helping anyone. And used his skills for someone else. Chris suffered in solitude for quite a long time and Armsmaster did not even give him good advice. The nanite-weapon he developed would have done more damage if it were in the hands of Alexandria, but Armsmaster is too greedy. Leviathan's action calculation program could have saved many lives if he had shared it, but he used the program to plot murders. Very often it is mentioned that he is doing something in the lab, but there are never any results of his research.
How many years has he been working in the Protectorate? and in all this time - armor, halberd and motorcycle? Are you serious? What do our taxes go to? Why are my taxes used so that Armsmaster can scratch his smugness and egoism?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but why is Armsmaster "he's a really good Tinker". I cannot understand why people who observe history and know the truth about his behavior continue to consider this man a hero.

I always thought Krieg is just a hammy cosplayer who is so into the Third Reich that he doesn't realize he's a caricature. From what canon implies he's not even German, he's British... but he speaks with a fake German accent. Even his lastname is wrong. Fliescher is how the Brits or Americans would spell it, in German it is "Fleischer" (meaning Butcher).

In a way he represents Neo-Nazis quite well: Glorifying the past, ignoring common sense and pretending to be the original Nazis while getting quite a lot wrong. Basically too stupid to learn from history. The guy is embarrassing and doesn't even know it.

Which honestly makes it kinda funny because he tries so hard and will never get it right. I've always held the belief that laughing at (Neo-)Nazis takes away a lot of their power and intimidation.

Can you imagine how a historian could take apart the Empire 88 verbally?

It's called PR.

Armsmaster can fit a ridiculous amount of gadgets and counter measures into his equipment, and is constantly working on maintaining and improving them.... to the point of neglecting his other duties and even his health (proper sleep isn't efficient). Okay, yes his gear is temperamental and fragile due to him shoving too damn much functionality into everything and trying to eek out 0.001% improvements in efficiency (in his mind). But it WORKS. He developed a combat prediction program that let him, for a short period of time, go one on one with Leviathan. And he developed a weapon system which could (theoretically) kill an Endbringer. Okay, yes he broke the "Endbringer Truce" to get that one on one fight, and was unable to win. But he did survive the fight. And Armsmaster developed a sedative that could negate Lung's regeneration. Okay, yes when he used it the sedative nearly killed Lung due to the extreme amounts of black widow venom that Lung's regen was struggling to fight off. But it did negate Lung's regeneration.

Armsmaster does make impressive tech, he just tends to not think about consequences with how and when he deploys said tech.

well...

You don't want metal or armor for resisting the sprayed AGHOUS venom, just teflon-ish NBC gear. But then she stabs you. So IDK. A lot of destructive experimentation may occur

Unfortunately they may poke around and find her lair/hive/clubhouse

I guess the Nazis will try try again.

Would be fun if she could figure out how to become a tunnel digger with concrete wall layering, included.
For now, though, let her start mapping the underground and other forgotten locations.

Combine a mole cricket and a mud dauber wasp and she'd be getting there. Probably some termite as well.

Formosan termite, specifically.

A couple of years after I moved up to Dallas, I saw an article about how the University of New Orleans was getting funding to replace the balconies on the Student Center because of termite damage.

I made a scoffing comment to my co-workers about how this demonstrated how corrupt Louisiana was, because I _went_ to UNO, and those balconies were (and still are, as of a year ago) not just solid concrete, but _thick_ solid concrete.

That was the day I learned that formosan termites _will eat concrete_.

To make a Giant Hornet Resistant room is actually easy: find a structural material with low reactivity to her venom (fiberglass may well qualify), reinforce with sturdy bracing placed close together, and build the walls several times thicker then the length of her stinger. The walls don't even have to be solid; just pack them with arsenic coated fiberglass insulation to fill the internal space, and you have a wall she can't get through too quickly...

(I said it would be easy. I never said it would be cheep or ethical.)

Remember it also has to be strong enough to resist someone who can also just pick up tractor trailer cab and throw it. Fiberglass isn't going to cut it. Taylor was lifting 5+ tons easily in the warehouse.

Beyond that thicker than her stinger helps, but she was going through 2 inches of iron without difficulty, that's pretty close to a .50 BMG. Also if you're using filler, it needs to be non porous and just as low reactive to her venom as the outside cause she can just inject it after initial penetration and severely compromise the structural integrity. You'd really need nuclear bunker level protection to have a chance of slowing her down more than a few seconds.

And it also seems to me that during the discussion in the PRT Emily should have asked the question - "Listen professor, what do hornets eat in nature?"
- Other insects, Professor Brooks replied - but since we, unfortunately, do not have other giant insects. Most likely, judging by the size, it eats small animals - rats, cats, possibly dogs. Although ... (the professor thoughtfully watched the video again) don't you think that the way she carries Vista is very familiar to her?

Are you wondering why he's considered a good Tinker, or why he's regarded as a hero? Those are two different things.
In canon, he has a number of inventions, some of which are listed here. He also has developed counters to the powers of any parahuman he meets/is aware of, as shown when he fights the Undersiders.
Most people agree that - as Armsmaster - he's the worst type of hero: one in it for the glory, and damn anyone who gets in the way of that. As Defiant, he's much better - more humble and focused on what really matters (what most people like to associate with the character).

Of course, canon Armsmaster isn't in this story, so I don't see why you are going on a tirade.

We actually don't know enough yet of this Armsmaster. At base, he's an egotistical glory hound, and lets that ego dictate his actions and view of other heroes. He resents Dauntless because Dauntless's powers potentially have no upper limit, while Armsmaster realizes he's reaching the limits of what he can do. He convinced a neophyte hero in canon to let him have all the credit for Lung's capture, then when taking said credit meant he also got all the blame, Armsmaster grew to resent The kid who he'd taken the credit from. Thus guiding his actions and interactions with Skitter after that. In canon, it basically took being completely disgraced after his actions during the Leviathan fight came to light for Armsmaster to become a better person.

It's possible that he's gotten a different wake up call already in this timeline. In fact, that wake up call may have come in the form of an absolutely epic shitstorm kicked off by a hospital in the wake of a teenage girl getting shoved into a bio-hazard filled locker by a Ward. Or he might have gotten hit with a Clue-By-Four at some point, and realized that spending 30 hours a week maintaining equipment that is only usable for a couple hours is not efficient. Neither is spending 30 hours and who knows how much money in resources to get a 0.001% boost to a single piece of equipment's performance while adding an additional 3 hours a week to the maintenance requirements.

I see his tinker power more as how chips work.
As in, he can go smaller, but then needs to take a step back, in order to make it work properly & reliable.
See it as a one step forwards and two back, in terms of scaling down.
That Armsy goes for the step forwards, without taking those steps back, makes it so he keeps having such a high upkeep time, besides using the wrong materials for the job.
Just look at the NS-1200, some of the running gear used materials that made the NS-1100, NS-1300 & NS-1600, more economical in upkeep costs.
But then a new material was found, that actually worked better for the NS-1200, making their upkeep cost, less.
Too bad they were out of production, at that time.

This are the two problems that Armsmaster has, in terms of his gear upkeep cost.
And in terms of helping Kid Win find his own tinker speciality(?).....
He is too close to the fire in how he uses his own Miniaturization Tinker Specialization.
He ain't seeing the Kid Win tree, true his own forest.
Kid Win his specialization is multipurpose modularity, think Swiss Army Knife with a bit system & a USB stick, as part of it's make-up.
Does that not basically say what Armsmaster his Halberd is???

A lot of the characterisation of Armsmaster thrown around here is fanon. Especially the "gets nothing done because he's so busy with maintenance" stuff. In canon, most tinkertech lasted quite a long time. The rig, the elevator in the PRT HQ, Leet's Snitch etc. Maintenance of powered armor after a fight is standard procedure and would have been necessary even if it wasn't tinkertech. Same for weapons. You check your gear after use, that's just normal.

Armsmaster is a famous hero because he excelled in the Strike Teams before he came to Brockton Bay. He's a great Tinker because he isn't restricted by his speciality. Just like Bakuda he can scan parahuman powers and replicate those effects with his inventions. He can build mechanical, electrical, electronical and chemical devices. There's no area where his power doesn't apply.

One of his greatest achievements was creating the early warning system for Endbringers together with Dragon. His combat pre-cog program was incredible, too.

Armsy also isn't a total jerk or ignores everything else on his path to glory. He's more nuanced than that. For example, he gave Taylor good advice in canon but she wasn't in a place where she could accept it. He's socially adept enough to navigate office politics and PR events. He doesn't need help from some invention to hold a conversation and he can be quite charming and heroic when interacting with the public. He usually doesn't care that much and his public persona reflects the "all business, no fun" attitude.

Defiant is still the same person. He has the capacity to care and empathize with others. He is able to sacrifice something important to him if it helps others. The difference is that as Armsmaster he had other priorities and responsibilities. Speaking of helping others, he made Weaver's flight pack and gave her a nano-thorn knife.

Fanon also often throws "Armsmaster didn't care for the Wards and never supported them" ... and that's not true. The entire line of the Brockton Bay Wards had armored costumes of high quality, for example. Even if he didn't make those himself (canon doesn't mention their source except for Gallant's power armor, made by Kid Win), he at least made sure they had adequate protection. You can see the difference when other Wards pop up in the story. If it wasn't for their powers, the Chicago Wards would run around in nothing more than spandex.

Kid Win made power armor, a hover board, his pistols and the alternator cannon, among other stuff. Does this look like a Tinker who desperately needs help to you? How exactly was Armsmaster supposed to help him? Chris needed to find his speciality on his own.

Canon Armsmaster is not a good person but then barely anyone in Worm is. He is very competent though and was able to devise counters to the Undersider's powers within days. If he had ever been able to replicate his psychic protection for Simurgh fights, he would have been celebrated.

Compared to other heroes he was doing fine for the most part, or do we actually have anyone from the Protectorate that was achieving so much more at the time? Not even the Triumvirate was changing the status quo and they actually had the spare power to do so.

In my opinion he earned his position as leader but at the same time it also crippled him because as a Tinker his power is directly tied to how much time he can invest. Of course his progress stagnated after getting the job, he suddenly lacked the hours. But it would also be unfair to never make Tinkers leaders because of that.

I generally write Armsmaster as a decent enough person with some definite oddities to his personality that can make many people find him somewhat difficult to deal with. Which is fairly close to canon in many ways, even if the details differ. I quite like the character, to be honest. I've known people a lot like how he appears. They can be hard work, but worth the effort.

On the other hand, sometimes they're just jerks.

This one I haven't yet decided on, but we'll see :)

Okay, this is getting bizarre. Now honest to god giant hornets are posting on PHO?! How does a hornet get verified?!
They probably took a look at her Twitch stream. She does book and fanfic reviews on Wednesdays and plays low end and casual games on Saturdays. Lots of bitching about lack of accessibility too, it's pretty cool.
