Under the Open Sky (CWMGQ Spinoff)

Hell is fuedal. If goddess empress gold would work Champion gold would work. And this is still arguing to give up elves and fairies for dead and ignore what hell does to humans what their system glories in. It even calls to ignore what it does to demons. If God queen gold had the might to work it wouldn't matter if she was commander and chief. She'd be able to just nuke the man in charge.

Like am I missing some turbo atrocity on civvies? I mean beyond the blenderizing field that sick up corpse souls. Though that is an atrocity.

What were we saving up for?

[X] The Noble

So, I did ask if anyone is willing to play spot-an-option, right?
One of the Divinity girls is firing her weapon, a cannon larger than she is, while darting around in mid-air. It looks like she's trying, and mostly failing, to hold her weapon so the magic death ray stays on target while she moves. And also trying to change how she holds the gun so she can hide behind it. What comes to mind is that she needs that practice, her reactions are much slower than her maximum movement.
The Fragment would probably have been giving Judgement Core a few pointers. We can do big guns as well, after all.
Insight is standing in ankle-deep water. Some sort of depression that flooded from the rain yesterday. More notable is that Wild Words is energetically dancing on the water. Last you saw Wild Words she sunk quickly, and wasn't cheerfully dancing. Unless shooting wildly counted as cheerful.
Wild Words? Who is this Wild Words? From the context it seems it's supposed to be Twisted Metal, the not-Abyssal from Headhunters events - I think.

Anyway, this covers The Schemer (Insight) and the Vessel (Twisted Metal/Wild Words, who is a shipgirl, aka embodiment of maritime vessel).
An Angel has perched on a tower. She's fairly small as far as Angels go and has crouched down and wrapped herself in her wings. You recognize her as Angel Abbadon, 'Abby', from her staff.
Obviously, The Angel is Abby.
Four sheetmetal walls, which are themselves decorated with runed slabs, have been erected adjacent to Signals' building. More than that, there are a couple people inside. From where you're flying you can see over the tops, one of the figures moves a lot like Starlancer.
Blatantly obviously, the winning option is Starlancer, the Noble.

The missing option is The Witch, and (considering we've been shown all the other options) by process of elimination (see here) it's indeed most likely Primary Wiccan.

Wild Words was her original name before Kell realized that was a dumb name and didn't fit thematically at all.

Fixed.

Something, something, that looks conclusive.

Crossworlds 16.12 (Deluge)
The courtyard has picked up a few more notable individuals since your fly-by. Primary Wiccan is humming something while listening to distorted music. You don't see Crimson Hood anywhere. A blonde Magical Girl with angel wings is fidgeting with said wings (Angel, Hope, Myth-Maker) near another dark-skinned Magical practicing with her sword (Night, Faith, Story).

The Angel girl tenses up when she spots you, but gives an energetic wave, "Hi there! I'm Angel Feather, who are you?"

"Magical Girl Summit." you state.

"Neat. Are you one of the CF girls or did you just hire-"

"You're Summit?" the other girl stops and stares at you.

"-Uh. That is who she said she was…" Feather says after a moment where none of you talk.

"I was expecting more somehow." the dark-skinned girl crosses her arms.

"She's Dusk Rose." Feather interjects, "How fast can you fly? Would you like to do a quick race?"

"More than 70 meters per second."

"Just 70? I think I can beat that, from the tip of the roof and back sound good?"

Rose makes a 'settle down' gesture, "Please just try to be calm for this."

The race offer appears to have been withdrawn. You think over her speech for a second.

"I've been part of the Counter Force for, I think, a week. There was a day change when I arrived."

Feather beams at you, "Cool! I joined up a few months back. It's nice to meet someone newer than me. Dusk Rose is happy to teach people."

"She's not a novice Feather. Can't you feel the power within her form? See how quickly she reacts to you?" Rose lectures.

Feather stands up straighter and looks you over again. Her wings droop and she shifts a foot back slightly.

"I've been taking novices and teaching for years. This battle is making me nervous too." Rose says.

You nod and duck away from the pair.

Feather runs a hand over her wing, "It's fine. I'll be careful. We've been through worse."

"Let us hope that holds true."

Insight runs through the surrounding trailers, "Summit! You're here. Great, I just heard that my engineering group found an entrance to the tunnels. Can you sneak over to them and make sure they don't get wrecked?"

That's it? "Is that all? I don't need to build anything?"

"That's it. Really. This isn't even my idea, one of the Fairy leaders cooked this up more than a year ago. You just have to provide security and make sure the equipment stays in one piece." Insight explains, "The sneaky part is relevant, try not to draw attention."

A trio of missiles rise from Machine Code's location, leaving wide trails of white smoke.

"I am sure I can manage. How do I find this team?"

Insight pantomimes working a touchscreen, "There's a reckoning system. Go into the location app on your datamine, pull up the options tab, and go to the set target location menu. The coordinates are…"
----

You reach the coordinates by dropping in. Which is to say, you teleported and climbed into the air until you had gotten high enough, then literally dropped the rest of the way down.

Fighting appears rather sedate. Napalm flies in a few place, and a magic purple laser beam is destroying trenches, but organized resistance to the Counter Force isn't manifesting. A large gap has been blasted into the line of tank traps. Small packs of Anti Demon Tanks are arranging themselves behind cover closer to the UD's territory. Columns of elves are marching into the area as well. You spot a large blast of Darkness splash off an invisible dome, so the area has already been fortified against hostile magic.

There's also a haze of smoke crawling over everything. Several marching elves had been wearing black bandannas over their mouths. An idle thought about westerns crosses your mind.

Oil burns next to a crater, where a dozen cloak-wearing elves are arranged with human squad weapons. A fairy with large wings (Water) is poking at something resembling a few funnels and several glass spheres. There are also a pair of magic-possessing humans: one of the cadets you had met before (Courage), and a man with a pistol and spotless outfit (Skill).

"Hi Summit." the cadet waves at you.

"Welcome. I understand you're our champion." one of the elves states, holding a very large shotgun pointed downward. She stands out somehow despite wearing the same camouflage as the rest of her team.

"It's a surprise to see you here. Weren't you being used as a magic battery?" you ask the cadet.

He, W. Blazkowicz by his name patch, shrugs, "That's what I usually do, but I'm a bit like you: really powerful magic. Enough that CF admissions judges that I'm in danger anywhere. Sometimes I get to shoot things."

The other guy pipes in, "I'm helping keep track of him. Babysitting wasn't what I was hired for, but they pay enough."

"Anything I should know?" you ask the group.

The fairy glances at you and resumes poking the device.

"There's a tunnel entrance under the rocks. Kill anything that emerges, keep Hazel and her machine in one piece, and don't wander into our fire zone." the elf commander explains briskly.

Blazkowicz grins, "It's called a Noah Device. We're flooding the place."

The fairy twists one of the spheres and water starts pouring from the funnels. Lots of water, like a trio of oversized fire-hoses were turned on full tilt. The pool under it grows even faster than the water pouring in could explain. Soon it's become a small river rushing into the crater, large enough to you to immerse yourself where it pours over the edge.

The elven commander wraps her cloak closed and goes prone, "If we are lucky this will be boring. Stay alert."
For a couple minutes you watch water drain into a hole while an army shifts around you. Two groups of Magical Girls fly overhead and fire notable waves of magic around. You also spy Atlantis Ether's magic striking down something overhead.

The smoke is rather annoying.

"This feels a little useless." you say after thinking it.

"I know the feeling." Blazkowicz shrugs.

"Everyone else is doing something useful."

"I know the feeling. But don't tempt fate please. Fido isn't much for defenses, he likes to hide behind his wall and bring in big monsters to make his shadows. Chief says it's all to slow us down since we can't leave the tunnels or the mountains or other things alone when we move forward. So you might yet save the day by stopping something powerful from breaking things." he says after a bit of a pause.

"Less chat, more watching." one of the elves says.

The leader raises an arm, "It's fine. Magical Girls have spirit-raising chats all the time. She'll still notice trouble before you do."

"How much longer?" you ask.

Blazkowicz points at the Skill Practitioner, "I'm curious too. How long Bruce?"

The indicated person, presumably Bruce, sighs and starts ...chirping?

No, it's not just falsetto chirps. There's something with changing tones and a whisper of magic as well. Parts of it repeat, like he's leaning on the simpler words.

The fairy talks back in the same manner. She's more melodic, you don't think a human could chime that fast.

There is something she repeats, sort-of.

"Almost a quarter done already? That's just over ten minutes." you say once she finishes.

Bruce stares at you, "You speak fairy?"

You shake your head, "I just thought she said something like 'halfway of halfway' and guessed the rest."

"A pity, I would have liked to introduce Link to another linguist. What she said was the device is just over three quarters full. It's possible the tunnels will finish flooding before then."

You nod and arrange yourself behind cover again.

A few minutes later the flow slows down. Link flutters about frantically adjusting the device right before a spike of magic pulverizes the rocks covering the tunnel entrance and sends a spray of water over everything.

A dark figure (Chaos) flies out of the mess and through a hail of gunfire.

You teleport behind it and zap it with Wave Force. It falls apart into motes of energy promptly.

Blazkowicz goggles from where he's thrown himself to the ground, "Oh damn…"

"More will arrive, stay alert!" the commander barks.

A few seconds later several of the scattered rocks merge together into some kind of magically-wielded bludgeon. You blast it to pieces before it can swing into anybody.

"Fall back, we're spotted!" the elves move like a well-oiled machine away from the crater.

You can't see very far into the turbulent water. Something tells you that a foe is there anyway. You take a breath and dive in.

Once submerged you shine a bright light from your Panoply. A pair of shadows (Chaos) are latched onto the sides of the tunnel and emanating a haze of power. It's the work of a few moments to crush them and fly back out.

The flow already seems more stable.

"Huh, still feel useless?" Blazkowicz mutters.

"Two down. I didn't look very far." you state.

"Well done." Bruce claps his free hand against the back of his pistol hand once.

Link makes some insisting chimes, Bruce translates, "It's leaking pretty bad downhill. Time to pack up and maybe flood something further up."

The elf commander raises a sword, "Get the charges ready. I want to re-seal that tunnel in 30 seconds!"
A person dressed in black leaps out of the water-filled crater (Horror, Skill). Just looking at her sends a jolt down your spine.

"Rejoice all those who have despaired. I have arrived to bring you peace." she shouts while readying a shotgun.

"Drop it! Now!" the commander shouts while you fly into the air.

Link does something that makes orbs of water rise around her. Bruce aims his pistol in a relaxed manner, Blazkowicz peeks out with a blocky weapon from behind a rock. Two crew-served machine guns are aimed at her. The woman doesn't appear to care.

She starts firing just as the elven gunners fire. The dull boom of a shotgun echos twice a second, killing an elven gunner with every shot. While the scream of heavy machine guns and lines of tracers impacting do less than rain against a windshield.

A person dressed in black leaps out of the water-filled crater (Mind, Skill). Something about her makes your nerves itch.

"Rejoice all those who have despaired. I have arrived to bring you peace." she shouts while readying a shotgun.
and we have a greater nightmare as an enemy. that means even without sheets atm, we can get a few things about it's abilities.
first: all greater nightmare's have False Existence. this is an ability which increases their resilience by double of incoming damage and decreases it again if the attacker has a higher existence bonus. which we do not have.
this means all our attacks without Unstoppable or Juggernaut will not deal damage to this nightmare at all.
currently those are only Wave Force and Ramming Speed. Attacks with Juggernaut will still only deal half damage.

second: it's affinities are mind and skill.
mind can be anything from affecting other minds to reading them.
while Summit is immune to the first our allies are not. None of us are immune to the second, so our actions will likely be read if that's the case.
skill affinity means our enemy is skilled, which grants abilities like attack negations, easy dodges, undodgeable attacks, etc.
Which will probably be a real pain to deal with.

potential XP expenditures to think about:

Panoply lvl 30: Mindslayer 420xp
No idea how exactly it would mess with our enemy, but slayer abilities always mess people up bad if they hit.

Panoply 35 -> 40 (1850xp)
Panoply lvl 40: Juggernaut 80xp
Currently only two of our spells are even capable of harming the enemy. our basic attacks are not, unless we buy this.
sadly that would set us back hard going for Pioneer.

without the 2nd purchase we'd likely be better of playing defense while going for intercepting the Nightmare's attacks to keep our allies safe and try to open the Nightmare up for a takedown from one of them, if one of them can.

Different question: How much XP should we expect if we do manage to kill it? Enough to at least partially offset nearly 2000 XP? Headhunters gave us "+1500 EXP No Odds Too Great", for example. Does this seem like a similarly difficult fight? We're not outnumbered and the enemy didn't bring anyone to specifically target us, for starters.
Long term, at least, we would have wanted Panoply lvl 40 anyway, I guess, because besides Juggernaut it also lets us unlock Slash Hell, Rain of Light, Curse, and Shred, all of which are relatively cheap. Are those any good?

To answer wether our allies have something to deal with this thing, I guess we'd need character sheets. Judging by the Placeholder, those seem to be underway.

Slash Hell and Rain of Light are very good and definite buys. Curse and Shred are more situational.

how much XP this fight is worth will also depend on how good our allies are, and therefor will have to wait for sheets.

This is Nightmare of Thomas, and it has 50 Resilience, its dice rolls were 115 and 63.

I expect it to be as tough as wet paper, if not for False Existence.

[X] Plan Wrestling
-[X] Shift your Panoply to Spell Boost, Intercept and as many Omni-casters you can (2x)
-[X] Close distance with Shifting or Elsewhere. Grapple/Pin the Nightmare with Panoply.
--[X] This OUGHT to count as a basic attack. And since we have a force-an-Intercept ability, we probably CAN force a grapple.
-[X] Regardless of if it is grappled, or managed to evade, the attempt, cast Ramming Speed at it. Make the Nightmare feel what it means to be caught between a rock and an indestructible magical girl. Check your target and repeat as necessary.

[X] [EXP] Save it

@kelllogo are my assumptions (grapple counts as an attack, and is subject to Unstoppable Blow if negated, making grapple hit anyway) correct? And the assumption we CAN cast a Ramming Speed once it is caught?

Noooo I wouldn't think Unstoppable Blow would apply to grapple attempts. You can't power through a grab the way you can normal attacks.

Noooo I wouldn't think Unstoppable Blow would apply to grapple attempts. You can't power through a grab the way you can normal attacks.

Power through as shrug off an attack, or as in overpowering a defence? Either way, what makes you say that? I could think of examples for both, either an ogre crushing a target in it's grip despite the target's armor, or someone simply lifting up and dragging a grappler behind them.

Theoretically, she has no defense against wave force (and it has a 50% chance to kill her even without spell boost.) or ramming speed (which kills her in two hits, or one with spell boost), but the latter brings us to melee, where she has several major boosts...

And with the new horror affinity, we don't need juggernaut - horrorslayer already does better.

Honestly, killing her isn't that problematic. The problem is keeping our allies alive.

Intercept-Horrorslayer-(probably danmaku)-(probably homing) and attack, try to intercept or sync with Path to Injury. This plan has the advantage of being almost certain to work. We have enough APT she shouldn't be able to negate them all even if we don't get an intercept, enough damage to one shot her, and unstoppable blow helps a LOT.

Spam-casting Ramming Speed with multicaster and possibly spell boost also might work, but poses a risk with getting in melee with her.

I suppose we could drop danmaku/homing in favor of multicaster and try some combination of the two, but I think that would be even less effective than either. We could also throw a wave force attempt into the first plan if we want. (It would mess up the second with grand dispel.)

Now, possibilities for keeping our allies safe. We could stretch space between them and her to make it harder/more unlikely for her to target them (might also help us intercept), try casting Guardian Touch (I wish we had the target by modifier thing... oh well), or just bank on killing her fast.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Some of these are suggestions compiled from discord. Naron came up with the ramming speed one, for instance.

Wasn't on discord, so my plan with Intercept, Spell Boost and Ramming Speed spam was independently done. Did it before the character sheets were up, too.

HorrorSlayer? I don't think it works as a method to bypass False Existence. So Intercept-Horrorslayer does not allow us to kill Nightmare of Thomas. However grappling it will open it to attacks from Elf Gunner Commander, who does have Juggernaut on Blackrazor. EDIT: Nevermind, with Herokiller Mica it was discussed (page 56) and apparently appropriate affinity Slayer will bypass False Existence.

We're Inspired, our Panoply is suitable for false ability emulation, and we should have a movement speed advantage so even without damage boosters we should be able to overpower Nightmare's attacks in melee. I think. EDIT: Reminder, we can intercept attacks aimed at our allies, too.

On a different note, anybody have any thoughts on Feather?

Was she just trying to psyche herself up? Cause that was a pretty abrupt change in how she carried herself. More than I would expect from simple embarrassment.

Why aren't you on the Discord, anyway? It's always odd when I'm reminded you aren't.
Three reasons:
1) I am in general a proponent of keeping the discussion about a subject (quest or story specifically) contained to the thread where it's posted. So that everything is in one place and, more importantly, can be found if someone goes on an archive search. Therefore, going to Discord spreads it to two websites at the lowest.
2) I am somewhat unwilling to expand on my internet presence by, among other things, registering at new websites, if I can avoid it. While going to both SB and SV was a natural move, I do not view adding Discord in the same way, and am therefore hesitant about registering in there.
3) I am unsure if I will be able to participate there, because most of the time I'm on the internet I'm doing this from mobile (with associated slow typing speed and being unsure if my platform is actually supported), and because I live in Russia (and expect to have skewed timezones compared to the majority of other participants). Therefore, I cannot be sure if I'll be able to participate or to respond in a timely manner if at all, so I don't want to bother.

Unvarnished version - I'm conservative, I'm lazy, and I have performance anxiety. :V

While we're on the subject:
@LostDeviljho - is Unstoppable Blow still incompatible with grappling or pinning attempts?
Does Horrorslayer allow us to bypass False Existence in this case, as was hinted on page 56 when we had a similar discussion about Herokiller Mica?
Can Nightmare of Thomas use Dodge This after she has spent her action with Bottomless Shotgun?
Are we starting the battle with NoT as a "start-a-new-turn" or as a part of the same turn she just shot three Elf Gunners?

[X] Plan Direct Attack
-[X] Shift your Panoply to HorrorSlayer, Intercept, Spell Boost and Omni-Caster.
-[X] Close distance with Shifting or Elsewhere, then either attack the Nightmare in melee, or intercept its attack if it tries to bypass you. Don't allow it to attack your allies.
-[X] If it lives, cast Ramming Speed at it. Make the Nightmare feel what it means to be caught between a rock and an indestructible magical girl. Repeat as necessary.

[X] [EXP] Save it

Right, changed plan to this above.
Ramming Speed: 1700 Base Damage, d255 Dice, +1400d700 Spell Boost = 3102 - 4055 Total Damage.
Nightmare of Thomas: 50 Base Resilience, +150 Dice, +(1551-2027) False Existence = 1751 - 2227 Damage Reduction.
1351 - 1828 Final End Damage.
Nightmare of Thomas: dies if Ramming Speed does more than 3400 damage. Approximately 70% chance of death.

HorrorSlayer Panoply: 1400 Base Damage, Dice Ignored, +200 Light of Discovery, +700 Inspired, +7000 HorrorSlayer = minimum 9300 damage
Attack NegatedUnstoppable Blow!
Nightmare of Thomas: 1500 Base Damage, 150 Dice, Full Auto Inactive = 1650 Damage
7650 Difference, HorrorSlayer Panoply Wins
HorrorSlayer Panoply: 7650 Intercept Damage, Dice Ignored, +200 Light of Discovery = 7850 Total Damage
Nightmare of Thomas: Dies unless it still has False Existence, and that at more than 75% reduction.
The way I figure it, our allies have this:
1) Bruce Rook - will survive any attack once he shots Nightmare of Thomas, and dies otherwise to a single attack
2) Blazkowicz - will die to Dodge This, and will die in melee range, but is otherwise safe
3) Elf Gunner Commander - will survive a single Dodge This, die to Bottomless Shotgun, and will die in melee unless the Nightmare is forced to expend its actions on someone else.
4) Link Ruby - presumably not going to engage
