TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

Marta Yarrow's never going to get a love-life at this rate. Well - no, that's not really true. She just had three bad first meetings in a row, is all.
Should have used my bonus.

After further consideration, I realized that "Hey, this isn't actually as bad as it sounds after all" because if I recall the way Romantic Comedies and Hallmark Christmas Specials work, they usually begin with the lead love interests clashing at first and not getting along before fate finds a way to show them how their first impressions of one another was actually a misleading understanding.

So narratively speaking Marta Yarrow's tale of romance is right on track to become a true classic with a signature happy ending. :V

Heck, we might still be in the "terrible date" montage that establishes her as unlucky in love.

Is being weird wrong? Though I don't think I'm in the weird group as much, I just aspire to engineer sapient life and dragons while playing Tree-Abathur.

Yeah, we can have the turnaround in the Wintersolstice turn.
We just need:
  • A tree to volunteer being decorated
    • If we have no better volunteers, the Speakertree could do it
  • Decoration
    • I invented ornamental UL for that, we just need to remind Robinton when the Turn is about to come.
    • Could probably also add some fresh blooming, If any growth tree is interested.
  • A feast
  • Some festive/romantic music
    • Maybe the new music tree is interested?
  • The right amount of pre-existing snow and good timing on new, light snowfall
    • *gestures abstractly at the elder weathertree*

Fair warning: I'll be semi-offline until Monday.

@Robinton , did you roll research rocketry?
So did I flop on studying the Sensing Trees or was that included in scientific breakthrough?
Wait, how's my cooking going?
are they going to regret letting me Cook?
All about average.
That usually means "a few successes added to an equivalent normal project," but in the case of Rocketry it might just mean "progress but slow progress."
Sensing Trees might also get a thought or two. Or possibly they'll instead get Elder Sensing Trees unlocked sooner.
Cooking is so dead simple it just does what it says.

I do believe I need to find an easier way to make the turn updates. That took around 2h just for all the math and the basics of the description updates.

Ah, well. Probably not this turn.

Not sure what could trim the fat, maybe give a simple default action or bonus to more of the Creatures/Allies so less work is needed for them each turn? probably not the time consuming stuff in the quest but it does get bigger over time.

Optimization of some sort may eventually become necessary. Or just a gradual movement to a larger scale, such that some if the small details can be glossed over in favor of larger picture things.

But teaching a computer to do your math for you is also a tried and true technique, just beware spending more time on it than it would have taken to ask some random internet person to do it instead.

Mostly done applying Creature effects.
Bees decided "no ongoing Research is within 5 of completion... but Elder Defender Ent is now open and takes 5 successes exactly."
Deer+Beavers+Bears finished the last Lens Tree Elder Upgrade, with a tiny bit of overflow.

@Robinton i have a question can i join in again as my old tree i haven't voted and stuff for like 15 turns

How Riot Quests work is that you can jump in and jump out at will.

There's usually some sort of benefit for jumping in at the start and continuing to participate (see the Tree Aging System based on number of Participated Votes), but other than "falling behind" on whatever progression system may or may not exist, there's nothing preventing anyone from dropping out or dropping in as things go by.

So, yes, you can absolutely pick up where you left off, and I imagine that if you drop an Action vote now Robinton will probably be willing to squeeze you in really quick.

There's an often-true stereotype for "good student of the basics of Magic" - bright, hardworking, inquisitive, and a bit introspective. The Grimm siblings match this archetype nicely.

There is no stereotype for "good Archmage" - because the defining characteristic, at the end of the day, is "the ability to comprehend, work with, and even align yourself with some concept."

I found two living - thriving - native Ash Trees today. I doubt they'll be alive in five years, of course - Emerald Ash Borers - but it's still enheartening. If I'm lucky and they're still in decent condition in six months, I'll grab a few seeds and grow them as saplings indoors.

...I need to check on the progress of that "crossbreed native trees with resistant ones" project...

Wrote up several things, including the weather. Also a chunk of the Talanburg update.

I'll reply generally to this page at some point. I'll reply to one easy series of questions right now.

Welcome back!
yeah just say i tried to meditate but failed and just stayed asleep
Works for me!
[X][Action] Veritas (Magic Research)
my inquisitive silver bodhi buddha tree has woken up to study the truth once more
also its fine if im late to voting for this turn will just write the same thing for next turn
Added to Turn 28 (the one I'm currently writing).

Sunflowers (if there are any in reach) could make the forests movement level add a bonus to growth. (slightly turning for optimal light harvest)
Research...
Interesting...
Sunflowers stop turning to face the sun when they reach maturity, and generally just stay fixed facing east.
But their seeds are edible, and I've heard they're also fantastic at sucking heavy metals out of the ground (if anyone can confirm or deny this, let me know).
Interesting...

Hmm, thinking on other plants that might be helpful...

Legumes/soybeans; learn about nitrogen fixation, develop the ability to improve our soil. Also, soy sauce.
Corn (potentially); if it exists as a developed crop, corn is superior at producing food per acre, though it notably drains the soil of nutrients in the process. Also, due to the same endless hunger for more carbon, corn gathers more of the unstable mildly radioactive carbon isotopes than other plants, might be interesting someday.
Wheat; wheat is basically just fancy grass. Make connected grasslands produce some food.
Grapes; the two-legs seem to like the juice of this vine's fruit for some reason, most animals just think they're tasty fruit. Mainly useful in that the vines can be layered on trees fairly harmlessly, and are also good sturdy vines if you need vines for things.
Tubers/potatoes; the Boars seem to like these roots, and the two-legs also eat them. They seem tough and hardy, which might be useful.

Yes, I am feeling foodish right now.

Us being a farming forest sounds cool. So much potential to grow foods.

Also ooh. Maybe we can create animals who naturally shed a thick meaty layer so there doesn't need to be murder for meat.

Or we invent meat apples, can feed everything except shadow spinners.
This honestly seems easier, to me. Granted, our first few tries probably won't taste the same to humans (and they honestly might be weirded out by the idea anyway), so they might prefer real meat to tree-grown meat, but with a few rounds of testing we should be able to replicate the flavors of several common livestock animals.

Animals, of course, probably won't care nearly as much; they just want food, and if we have easy meat for our carnivores they'd be more than happy to eat it exclusively since they don't need to chase or fight it first.
