The 1.6.1 patch for Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is now live in beta access.

In order to opt in to the 1.6.1 patch beta:
  • Right-click on Total War: THREE KINGDOMS in your Steam library
  • Click Properties and click the Betas tab
  • In the drop-down menu, select the 1.6.1 option
  • Close the window and your build will automatically update to 1.6.1
Headline changes include:
  • The Timeless Character option no longer turns off if game settings – such as difficulty level – are changed mid-campaign, and is also available in multiplayer co-op
  • Fixed issue where generic Nanman characters were not showing their weapons in battles
  • Nanman now have extra bonuses to satisfaction
  • Fixed issue where autoresolve values were wildly off if continuing a campaign from the launcher
Before we dive into the rest of the fixes, we just want to reiterate that the best way to enjoy the breadth of updated content that came with the release of The Furious Wild is by starting a new save. With so many changes implemented with The Furious Wild release, you will be getting the best out of your game by starting afresh.

If you want to continue with your campaigns from before this release, you can roll back your game to old_1.5.3 through the Betas tab in Steam.

The 1.6.1 patch addresses the following issues:

General
  • Fixed issue where autoresolve values were wildly off if continuing a campaign from the launcher
  • Timeless Character option now available in multiplayer co-op campaigns
  • Timeless Character option no longer turns off if game settings such as difficulty level are changed mid-campaign
  • Fixed issue where generic Nanman characters were not showing their weapons in battles
  • Lu Zhi now has the correct bonuses from his career trait
  • New armour for Li Ru, Wei Yan, and Xun You now show the correct value and have had their values updated
  • Wei Yan can no longer unequip his armour
  • Yellow Turban factions in 190 CE (Gong Du, He Yi, and Huang Shao) have regained their ability to annex Yellow Turban rebellions settlements (this fix will only apply to new campaigns)
  • Factions declaring war against vassals are now considered to be the aggressors towards the vassal lord when resolving treachery and generating subsequent deals. This should prevent instances of the player gaining treachery penalties when their vassals are attacked. If you spot any other erroneous treachery penalties occurring in your games, please report it on our forums
  • Shi Xie now correctly has access to spies at Duke rank
  • We have made some balance adjustments to Gate Passes:
    • Each level now gives bonuses to public order and reserves gain
    • Increased reserves capacity of each level
    • Sapping can no longer be used against Gate Passes
    • They no longer take damage on the campaign map when under siege
    • They now gain mounted artillery a level earlier, and gain one more piece of mounted artillery at the top level
    • Corrected Bandit and Yellow Turban gate garrisons to no longer include cavalry
  • Supply cost per turn on rivers and sea increased from -5 to -30
  • Nanman now have extra bonuses to satisfaction
    • Each major fealty gives +5 satisfaction to all characters
    • Centralised Administration and Tribal Council reforms give +5 satisfaction to all characters
    • Diplomatic Authority reform gives +10 satisfaction to all characters
  • Nanman characters melee evasion, ranged block chance, and melee damage stats no longer change when recruited. This was caused by a hidden handicap applied to all Nanman armies that are compensated for by Fealties gained. This hidden handicap and bonuses gained from Fealties no longer apply to Nanman characters, so their stats remain consistent
  • Fixed issue where emperor flags for Sun Jian, Sun Ce, Liu Bei, and Cao Cao were wrong in battles
  • Fixed issue where Lü Bu's flag wasn't displaying correct in 194 CE start date
  • Fixed issue where Sun Jian's flag wasn't displaying correctly in custom battle
  • Fixed issue where some siege maps had the caltrop ground type covering most of the ground
  • Additional localisation fixes made in Simplified Chinese
  • Fixed issue where it was not possible to change UI scaling as it was before 1.6
  • Swap retinue button now works correctly
  • Removed triggering of some events that spawned characters that could result in items such as mounts being taken by the spawned character as these events were not meant to be spawning. This will reduce these instances of item "stealing"
  • Fixed the issue with weird heights in the siege map for Pengcheng
  • Based on community feedback, the colours of Liu Bei's flag and soldiers' uniforms have been updated. The flag now has a gold background, a darker green edge, and a white symbol/pattern around the edges
  • Fixed issue where the gamma slider setting had gone missing from the graphics options
  • Fixed issue where the Multiple Bolt Crossbow was not firing the right amount of bolts – it was wrongly firing one at a time instead of five
  • Fixed a performance issue related to some of the new UI elements added to settlement labels on the campaign map. This could cause drops in framerate when zooming in and out

At long last, the days of people forcing you to lose honour by attacking your vassals are over!

Guandu DLC announced with a release date of March 11th 2021. The new start year is 200; Cao Cao and Yuan Shao are on the brink of war and Sun Ce is still alive (albeit he'll probably die soon after the start like how Sun Jian dies in base game), with the former 2 each gaining five new units (allegedly). As part of the free update, both Cao Cao and Yuan Shao are also having their mechanics reworked. They've also added Ma Teng and Yuan Shu to 182, and Liu Chong and He Yi to 194, in addition to a variety of new start positions for 200. FLC will be Liu Yan (190 and 194)/Liu Zhang (200), with 2 new units for this faction (edit: apparently he's instead part of the DLC?). New characters include Zhang He, Yan Liang, Wen Chou, Cao Pi, Cao Ren, Yu Jin, and Fa Zhen, among others. CA has also promised extensive bugfixes, but we'll see how those shake out.

FAQ here: Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - Fates Divided FAQ - Total War

EDIT: I forgot to mention, but holding the Emperor now gives you access to a new mechanic where you can curry favor to gain bonuses (including faction-wide corruption reduction), declare other factions Enemies of the Han, and so on. You can also reinstate the Han Emperor once you reach Emperor (?) rank, if you want to roleplay loyalty to the Han.

EDIT2: I think there's also a faction council rework for everyone? But I may be misreading this so I'd appreciate a fact check.

NO REST FOR THE TRAITORS!

NO RETREAT FOR THE HAN!

More in-depth mechanics for having control of Emperor Xian alone is about 1/3rd of what I've been asking for on the strat layer for Three Kingdoms. Now people might actually want to capture the Emperor!

Sure looks like it:

All told I think I'm as excited for the free mechanics as I am for the DLC specific stuff.

Looks like a lot of updates - really interested to get more of a sense of how it all plays.

FLC will be Liu Yan (190 and 194)/Liu Zhang (200), with 2 new units for this faction.
Going by the FAQ, Liu Yan and Liu Zhang aren't actually FLC, they're part of the paid DLC - that seems to be because Cao Cao and Yuan Shao are both getting major faction reworks, and it does make sense to not want to split content out from basegame factions. Obviously Cao Cao and Yuan Shao do still get stuff in the DLC, but only the things relevant to the new start date seem to be part of the DLC side of it.

Patch notes are out: Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Patch 1.7.0 - Total War

Notable features include the age of adulthood being dropped to 16 from 18, Gate Passes providing commerce income bonuses to adjacent regions, doubled damage against routing units, further adjustments to fatigue, cavalry, and ranged units, and a variety of fixes.

Also:
Fa Zheng's Mock ability sees him accost the enemy hero, wounding their pride and shaking them to the core. This ability, when activated, targets an enemy hero and reduces their melee attack rate as well as lowering morale and doing a small amount of AP damage.
Fa Zheng can literally insult people to death.

Was cleaning out my tabs and realized I'd forgotten to share this one:
Article:
[...] But hope is here for all proponents of peace. Three Kingdoms' next expansion Fates Divided, and the hefty update that rolls in with it, give aspiring emperors a suite of new tools to solve problems without poking them with a spear. And we're going to put them to the test.

First, the ground rules. To do this properly, I decide to be very strict in my approach to pacifism: I am not allowed to muster any armies, declare war, or even use spies (I know myself, and I would be too tempted to assassinate people. I've been informed this isn't very pacifist.) Instead, I'll rely on a strong economy to purchase settlements, and use the game's new tools to trick, bargain, and manipulate my way out of any hostilities. [...]

All of this said, playing Liu Zhang's Fates Divided campaign as a pacifist may have been the easiest Three Kingdoms playthrough I've ever had. I grow quickly thanks to his powerful character buffs, and forestall any problems before they get out of hand through the faction council. Confederation also lets me bring a majority of the game's best characters and ancillaries into my faction. It's all going swimmingly… until I reach the Three Kingdoms period.

Our author here got a lot further than I thought was even possible I have to admit.

Ok, all jokes aside, the game did get a couple of DLC and does feel complete, if nothing else. But that doesn't mean I can't help but feel annoyed in the same way I felt annoyed at shelling out for TWH2 when it came out.

Excuse me wtf???? They're just...dropping the game????? There's not even a fucking Three Kingdoms scenario in this Three Kingdoms game????????? What happened to the northern expansion???????? (this is a rhetorical question, presumably it got canceled) Ay dios mio CA what are you doing.

This is...confusing. Like I don't feel like Three Kingdoms is unfinished, but I don't feel like it's done either. There was considerable room for further DLCs and the game was super popular so...What the heck?

While on paper I'm okay with a 3K2 in the same vein as WH2, and I am glad they told us fairly substantially ahead of time, I do think there was a better way to inform us. I'm also concerned by this:

This at least strongly implies this isn't going to be a WH2 type of thing and a more traditional sequel instead like Shogun 2 was to Shogun, or Rome 2 was to Rome, or Medieval 2 was to Medieval. Which is just kind of weird if that's the case. They're still in preproduction, so hopefully it not connecting to 3KTW is something that changes.

But uh, yeah. I really don't wanna be asked to buy 190 startpos main game again or a mandate of heaven DLC all over again in a year or two. I want stuff like the cancelled northern expansion or a Chibi start date or a second gen kingdoms leaders, or a Zhang Lu faction adding on to what we already have.

So, apparently they want to make a new game more closely following the novel because...

I can't really think of any reason other 'Fuck people who play records mode', I guess?

I am really miffed cause it did feel like we were one expansion and two chapter packs from being done. Northern expansion and then chibi chapter and a full three kingdoms chapter. Again, Liu Bei's mechanics haven't received a touchup and they are just really bad, and actually non existent in the 200 start

Does anyone know if the game sold especially poorly, leading them to do this a cost-saving measure?

I quite enjoyed 3K and have begun to play it again as of a few weeks ago. I was just commenting to a friend how pleasantly unfamiliar it is (from a Western perspective) in terms of the history, story, army types, and geography involved. I had thought this was also a rich vein to mine--more army types (different siege engines, different types of cavalry, etc.), more regions, etc.

Announcement of a second generation is not really terrible news in my opinion, but as @The Englanderish pointed out, we're about to have to buy our way to completion again. I'm just very disappointed we won't get the western regions, Korea, or Vietnam sooner, and I hope modders take up the call (although, in my experience, "dead" games don't get as much love as "living" ones).

I found the video very confusing. I actually thought they were announcing a new expansion until I read otherwise on this thread. I guess I have begun to get the sense that they will turn this into a variant of Warhammer or Trojan War--more mythological elements.
