[x] Kotone, the Ninja

A better world sounds much more interesting than any of the other character quests.

Oh well there goes my dream of Gary Quest
Edit: smell ya later... not like I wanted to smell ya or anything...

1.1 - Kotone, the Ninja
You are Kotone of the Yoshimura Clan.

You consider yourself a little bit different from everyone around you.

Where the world only sees Pokémon as a threat, or a weapon to wield against that threat... You think a little bit bigger. Now that humanity has gained the ability to capture and command Pokémon, couldn't they be used outside of the military..? But you don't yet dare to share your thoughts with anyone else, especially this close to being commissioned as a Trainer.

From early childhood, you've been trained in your family's Ninjutsu, and you are probably more suited to the task ahead of you than anyone else.

Catch a Pokémon without having another one on-hand? No one is better at fighting a stronger opponent than a Ninja. And although your grandfather might disagree, you know you're the best damn kunoichi there is.

Granted, modern warfare means you're using sniper rifles instead of crossbows, but you like to think that your shuriken still have more utility than any handgun or throwing knife when it comes to mid-range combat. And your stealth and survival techniques will never go out of style.

And your training also means that you're better at aiming a Pokéball than any of your peers.

Yet somehow, Silver is the only one who acknowledges your talents... But that's why he's your best friend, right?

And you're thankful for that, because as hedonistic as he might be, you have to admit that he's charismatic and resourceful. And you're going to need all the help that you can get if you're going to pass this test.

And in fact, not only will you pass this test, you're going to do better than that damned Leaf.

You admit she's an amazing cadet, or she wouldn't have gotten the nickname of rookie of the decade, despite her being the daughter of the late Flame Champion or whatever. But you have better scores than her in both Marksmanship and Survival, right?

And you have no idea why Silver is so infatuated with her. Oh, he won't admit it, but you can see it.

Daughter of the late Flame Champion blah blah blah, and she's got that creepy brother of hers, too.

Ash has always been a weird guy, and you get the feeling that he can read right through you, so you've always tried to stay away from him as much as possible. It doesn't make your (self-proclaimed) rivalry with Leaf any easier, that's for sure.

Also inexplicably, he seems to be particularly close to Gary Oak.

The grandson of The Chancellor, not only is he really cute, he's also the top student in your graduating class. He's a little bit of an aloof character, but something tells you that if you could just get closer to him... you could persuade him that Pokémon are useful as more than just tools of war. Yeah, that's it. Your interest in him is purely professional, you swear.

Still... the only person you're really close to is Silver, so you should brainstorm with him on which Pokémon to choose as your Starter, right?

Then again, Gary is really smart, so he might have some precious insights... All professional curiosity, honest!

It is the 1st day of the Latewinter, in the 48th year of the New Pokémon Calendar.

Your interviews are in 21 Days.

Before then, you need to decide which Pokémon to choose as your Starter, come up with a way to convince the Board that it's a good fit for you, as well as plan a strategy to actually capture it in its natural habitat.

What do you do next?

Preliminary research will reveal lore and standard parameters of the chosen Pokémon.
ONLY Pokémon native to Kanto-Johto are valid options.
A research turn unlocks details about the entire evolutionary line.

A day of training rolls 2dLV. Every crit increases the attribute level by 1.
If no crit is achieved, DC for one level-up is reduced by 1.
e.g. on an attribute of 10, roll 2d10.
10 + 9 increases attribute by 1 to 11, rolling 2d11 on subsequent training days.

10 + 10 increases attribute by 2 to 12, rolling 2d12 on subsequent training days.
9 + 9 doesn't increase the attribute, but reduces DC to 9.
On subsequent training days, 10 + 9 will increase attribute by 2, whilst 9 + 9 will only increase attribute by 1.

[x] Do preliminary research on a Pokémon. (2 Days)
→ [x] What Pokémon?
[x] Talk to Silver. (1 Day)
[x] Talk to Gary. (1 Day)
[x] Do some training and think by yourself. (1 Day)
→ [x] STR : Focus on training your body.
→ [x] AGI : Focus on training your reflexes.
[x] Write-in.

Do the DC reductions reset upon successfully increasing an attribute?

Apart from that, a few questions I'd like to get answers to as to properly evaluate goals. Most basically boil down to "how are we expected to operate", but ah well.
  1. What kind of missions are trainers generally expected to take on?
  2. How quickly do new trainers generally capture their second and third Pokémon?
  3. Can we assume that rarity in quest roughly corresponds to how it is in the game?
  4. Would a sniper rifle drop most Pokémon? And would it be within our power to requisition one?
  5. Are Pokémon in the wild generally hostile?
  6. How dangerous is it generally to travel between settlements?
Aaand more, probably. But I think that that'll be a start and paint a picture of what kind of things I'm curious about. :p

Yes, they reset.

  • What kind of missions are trainers generally expected to take on?
As a Trainer of the League? Anything your superiors command you to.

But in general:
Patrol borders.
Hunt down dangerous Pokémon.
Reduce wild Pokémon populations.
Fight off Pokémon attacks.

There are additional stuff such as venturing into ruins, investigating Pokémon-related threats, etc.

  • How quickly do new trainers generally capture their second and third Pokémon?
Not quickly. Pokémon are not cheap to maintain, y'know.

  • Can we assume that rarity in quest roughly corresponds to how it is in the game?
Ask. If Kotone knows, I will tell you.

If not, I'll tell you as much as she knows.

  • Would a sniper rifle drop most Pokémon? And would it be within our power to requisition one?
You're likely to be issued one or two firearms and some ammo, since without a weapon you'll just die out there.

You won't kill any Pokémon with a shot, but it deals high enough damage to reduce their combat effectiveness drastically... granted you land a good hit.

  • Are Pokémon in the wild generally hostile?
Military doctrine rules that all Pokémon are to be considered hostile.

  1. How dangerous is it generally to travel between settlements?
Pretty dangerous, but it's not as bad as it used to be. If you're lucky, you won't even encounter a single Pokémon if you don't go out of your way to attract their attention.

With a protective retinue, you're pretty safe unless you encounter something really dangerous... but it's the military's job to take down any strong Pokémon if there are any sightings or clues that there's one that might be a threat.

Are rookie trainers expected to be able to take on many different kinds of missions or is specialization to some degree permitted/accepted?

Is sleeping in the wilds something that's often done by trainers or is that considered too dangerous?

Do we know what kind of Pokémon are most common in different areas? Do they correspond to the games?

How big of a deal is type advantages?

How broad of an area are new trainers expected to operate in? Is there something like an initial posting to some area where we'll then stay for a while, or could we be deployed all over Kanto or Johto?

How much do wild Pokémon fight?

Regarding our character: how does she feel about killing Pokémon?

Well, i think we should start with that:

[x] Do preliminary research a Pokémon

Gary probably won't even talk with us if we don't know the basics.

Gary will play a big role in this quest! I can see it now! *shipping intensifies*

Do we need to pick the Pokemon we're going to research?
Oops yeah please pick the Pokemon.

I'll edit the story post to indicate that, too.

Feel free to specialise.

Is sleeping in the wilds something that's often done by trainers or is that considered too dangerous?
You just need someone to keep watch tbh, or sleep really lightly... Or you find a way to make sure you don't get attacked while you're sleeping.

Getting ambushed in your sleep means you lose a turn or two even if you sleep in full combat gear, but everyone needs sleep.

Do we know what kind of Pokémon are most common in different areas? Do they correspond to the games?
Somewhat, but not exactly.

Researching an area will take 3 days, and reveal what Pokemon can be found there.

Researching a Pokemon will reveal where it can be found.

How big of a deal is type advantages?
It's a big deal.

Not big. Yes there's an initial posting.

How much do wild Pokémon fight?
Not that much tbh, but they do eat each other to live.

Varies between species, of course. Some are more aggressive than others.

Regarding our character: how does she feel about killing Pokémon?
Kotone:

Umm... I don't understand the question? I think I'm pretty good at it?

I wish there were something else we can do with Pokémon, but I don't know what yet, so the only thing we can do to them now is capture or kill, right..?

Ah.

[X] Research the nearby(wherever you might expect to reach without an escort) area. Find out what pokemon are even available first.

I'm not sure why that's necessary. It seems to me like we'll be escorted to whatever area contains the pokemon we pick, so long as the pokemon can be found within the Kanto-Johto territories and it's agreed that the pokemon is suitable for us. I don't think we have to worry about availabilities?

Something easy to hunt but that will scale well.

I mean, it's the most classic of Pokémon pre-evolutions, and I'm assuming our ninja girl wants a challenge to impress her definitely-not-a-crush.
If it's an option, it makes sense that she'd try to know why such a weak Pokémon exists, right? Hard mode and all that.

Also, it's a lame pun on the evolution, which we will call Garydos. For no reason. Why are you thinking so hard about it?

The line between seriousness and comedy are blurred in my view. Might need some new glasses.

[X] Do preliminary research on a Pokémon
-[X] Totodile

A bit disappointed that there's no pool-cue-wielding Gold among the characters.

[X] Do preliminary research on a Pokémon
-[X] Murkrow

It was either Murkrow, Natu, or-- if I was feeling especially prone to favoritism-- Hoppip. Jumpluff is viable and no one will ever convince me otherwise. May as well pick the one that I won't have to make my own vote for.

That said, given our character quest, we may want to consider picking up a pokemon that evolves with friendship. Seems like that would synergize pretty well.
