It's hard to imagine that a time without Pokémon ever existed.
Ask anyone. They will agree.
And yet, until around 50 years ago, the existence of these mysterious creatures had been entirely forgotten. For over 4000 years, a world without Pokémon had developed and flourished, and humanity reigned at the top of the food chain. Technological advancements had turned life into something comfortable and convenient. Prosperous. Peaceful.
But these very same technological advancements made it possible to excavate the ancient Amatsun ruins that are scattered across the globe... and unleash the monsters sealed within.
By the time the danger was apparent, it was too late. Although not ineffective, these Pokémon were resistant to modern firearms, and in the time it took to shoot one down, two or three more would appear. And although the military could fend them off, there was no such defence for civilian residents.
Within a decade, Pokémon had multiplied to the point that they had completely overtaken most of the world's habitats. And at the same time, the human population had dwindled just as rapidly -- more than 500 million deaths, and all of them due to Pokémon.
It seemed like humanity would go extinct.
And then... we rediscovered Pokéballs, and reverse-engineered working prototypes of the device that would turn everything around.
It turned out that the best way to fight Pokémon... was with other Pokémon.
Like the chaos was all a lie, and seemingly with a flip of the hand... within the next few years, we had regained our position at the top of the food chain.
It is the 48th year of the New Pokémon Calendar, and humanity survives.

You are a cadet enrolled in The Military University of the Kanto-Johto Indigo League.
Better known as Tohjo University, it is arguably the most prestigious Pokémon-related academy on the continent.
For the past three years, you've trained and studied like a madman, all in the hopes of earning a commission as a Pokémon Trainer of the Indigo League.
Now, the time has come for you to take your final test.
Over the next three weeks, you will conduct research and determine what Pokémon from the Kanto-Johto territories would best qualify as your personal Starter.
Once you have decided on your Starter, the Governing Board will conduct a round of interviews to ascertain that your choice is suitable.
Upon clearing the interviews, the University will sponsor you with one single Pokéball to capture your Starter of choice in its natural habitat. In addition, you may requisition weapons, protective gear, rations, and other supplies.
You will then be escorted to the aforementioned habitat, and over the following two weeks, you will attempt to capture your Starter.
If you succeed, you will officially become a Trainer, but if you don't...
