There's got to be more to Pokémon than all of this fighting and killing, right..?

It's hard to imagine that a time without Pokémon ever existed.

Ask anyone. They will agree.

And yet, until around 50 years ago, the existence of these mysterious creatures had been entirely forgotten. For over 4000 years, a world without Pokémon had developed and flourished, and humanity reigned at the top of the food chain. Technological advancements had turned life into something comfortable and convenient. Prosperous. Peaceful.

But these very same technological advancements made it possible to excavate the ancient Amatsun ruins that are scattered across the globe... and unleash the monsters sealed within.

By the time the danger was apparent, it was too late. Although not ineffective, these Pokémon were resistant to modern firearms, and in the time it took to shoot one down, two or three more would appear. And although the military could fend them off, there was no such defence for civilian residents.

Within a decade, Pokémon had multiplied to the point that they had completely overtaken most of the world's habitats. And at the same time, the human population had dwindled just as rapidly -- more than 500 million deaths, and all of them due to Pokémon.

It seemed like humanity would go extinct.

And then... we rediscovered Pokéballs, and reverse-engineered working prototypes of the device that would turn everything around.

It turned out that the best way to fight Pokémon... was with other Pokémon.

Like the chaos was all a lie, and seemingly with a flip of the hand... within the next few years, we had regained our position at the top of the food chain.

It is the 48th year of the New Pokémon Calendar, and humanity survives.

You are a cadet enrolled in The Military University of the Kanto-Johto Indigo League.

Better known as Tohjo University, it is arguably the most prestigious Pokémon-related academy on the continent.

For the past three years, you've trained and studied like a madman, all in the hopes of earning a commission as a Pokémon Trainer of the Indigo League.

Now, the time has come for you to take your final test.

Over the next three weeks, you will conduct research and determine what Pokémon from the Kanto-Johto territories would best qualify as your personal Starter.

Once you have decided on your Starter, the Governing Board will conduct a round of interviews to ascertain that your choice is suitable.

Upon clearing the interviews, the University will sponsor you with one single Pokéball to capture your Starter of choice in its natural habitat. In addition, you may requisition weapons, protective gear, rations, and other supplies.

You will then be escorted to the aforementioned habitat, and over the following two weeks, you will attempt to capture your Starter.

If you succeed, you will officially become a Trainer, but if you don't...

STR measures your fitness. Increases your HP, stamina, carrying capacity, etc.
AGI measures your dexterity. Increases your movement and action speed, accuracy, etc.
INT measures your knowledge. Increases MP, effectiveness of TMs and tools, etc.

All attributes can be trained and increased.

[x] Ash, the Orphan
You are a quiet young man with a mysterious past. When you were a child, you were taken in by a woman with a daughter your age. In the University, you found that you are unskilled with firearms, but your unusual aptitude for TMs more than makes up for it.
Character Quest: A Past Shrouded in Mystery
Personal Skill: Mysterious Powers (?)
Attributes: STR 8 | AGI 6 | INT 11

[x] Leaf, the Trainer
You are the daughter of a man who used to be one of the greatest Trainers of his time. He died many years ago, but as you grew up, you've developed an obsession with living up to his name.
Character Quest: My Father's Legacy
Personal Skill: Combat Instinct
Attributes: STR
9 | AGI 8 | INT 8

[x] Gary, the Academic
You are the grandson of the Chancellor of Tohjo University, who is a military hero with many accolades. His shadow is a heavy one to live under, but you're definitely the most knowledgeable amongst your peers.
Character Quest: Not Good Enough
Personal Skill: Walking Encyclopaedia
Attributes: STR
7 | AGI 8 | INT 10

[x] Silver, the Charismatic

Personal Skill: Uncanny Negotiator
Attributes: STR
7 | AGI 9 | INT 9

[x] Kotone, the Ninja

I like the sound of 'A Better World'.

Seems like the best character quest.

\o/ wdango pokequest!

Huh, some clearly established background events & timeline. And as the title suggests, militaristic.

[x] Kotone, the Ninja

...mostly because I'm curious to see her characterization. Or Silver's. I'd support voting for him as well! wdango has done lots of stuff with Ash, Leaf, and Gary before. :)

Kotone's character quest indeed sounds interesting for a setting like this, though. Almost counter-intuitive.

Edit: Ah, now I sorta remember the Silver quest(s?) too. But I don't recall enough to be worried about retreading much. :p

[x] Silver, the Charismatic

The last wdango academy pokequest, I believe we were Silver and tried to get a Sneasal as a starter. And Chancellor Oak suggested against because it's lifespan was a lot shorter than ours.

I don't care who we play, but let's try for a longer lived partner, if that thought process still applies. :V

It does. Good memory. That was many years ago.

[X] Leaf, the Trainer

Split between this and Kotone, though ultimately I just have a soft spot for Leaf. I don't suppose approval voting is allowed? :V

(Also, is it intended that Ash has higher INT than Gary, the one who's literally called "The Academic" and has the personal skill "Walking Encyclopedia?)

[x] Gary, the Academic

Peh, protagonist characters and their op stats... I just wanna yell "smell ya later" to people!

I'm guessing his personal quest will lead to him trying to become better?

Gary's Skill gives him unlimited lore checks. Meaning you can ask the QM more stuff than with other characters.

Ash's INT means high TM damage and more MP to throw around lol. Kinda needed since he's the only one who doesn't have a gun.

[x] Silver, the Charismatic

A nice balanced character. Intelligence for raising Pokemon, charisma to catch them, and agility to not die.

[x] Ash, the Orphan

While I disagree with any incarnation of Ash being smart, I can't help but play him whenever he's an option

[x] Kotone, the Ninja

I don't think we've done this one before.

Hopefully we can get into the field this time.
