Under The Black Flag
"Saint Louis, what is there to say about the city? Even to this day, there is a type of unhealable mental hum of the people who live there about the twin battles of the city. While sitting at the edge of the Ozark state, it feels like the edge of civilization before falling into the abyss that was dug open by the war against Klash. The mad impaler, the blood-drinking scourge that killed so many that even a century later, they are still finding mass graves of his victims, his name provokes fear in the eyes of the rural folks from which he ruled. May his soul be damned by every god in every tongue to the pit of fire. Yet, there a dark fascination with him among historians .
By early February of 2032, the Klash's horde was at the gates of Saint Louis, so to speak, with only a military line known as "Anderson Wall" holding his army off from the city. The line was made up of what was left of the federal army numbering around 7,500 men at the outskirts of the city. What they didn't have in numbers they made up for in defense against any frontal assault. All soldiers were deeply entrenched and gear with gas masks and CBRN suits. They were also armed with tanks, Apache gunships, power armor, drone fighters, along with drone jammers aimed at the front.
The troops at the front morale were low, and many of them who were pulled from the rural communities around the citiy saw Klash as more than human. The warlord had, over his reign up until then, cultivated a dark mystical quality to him among his own ranks and even among the ranks of the ANA and Federal troops. A mix of propaganda, psychological warfare, chemical warfare, and performance theater transformed a warlord into a monster. Stories of him moving faster than a car shrugging off bullets and even flying and changing shape were spread far and wide. While we now know Klash was just a man with cheep tricks, to the common soldier; even the more skeptical ones believed Klash was little more than a monster with the trappings of a man.
Despite this, Washington thought this would be the textbook battle that would turn the tide of the Klash's advance. After the failure at Norfolk and with the Presidential election looking to go the way of the National Unity party, it was seen as the right political move to make a stand at Saint Louis so that Klash could not get past the gates of the Mississippi.
The National Unity party, despite setbacks and political prosecution by the federal government and their allies, had grown massively, and with the GOP not looking to run the candidate in order to keep a united front against the rebels and the National Unity Party, Owens seemed to be and was the only real opposition candidate against President Kamala Harris.
That being said, Owens agreed with destroying Klash, saying in a January 2032 statement
"While we can make peace with the rebels, we must destroy that vile son of bitch Klash and turn his army into a glowing sea of glass."
Klash would actually respond to this in a propaganda video where he threatened to "Eat everyone she had ever loved" and that he would "Sell her off as war bride to one of his soldiers."
A Gallup poll showed that under half of the country, 44 percent supported the war against the rebels. However, 46 percent in the same poll supported the use of nuclear weapons against Klash's horde. Harris' approval rating was at a low of 45 percent, while Owens was at 46 at the lowest poll and up to 53 in more biased polls.
Another concerning factor was serval comments made by radical members of the NFAC leadership that hinted that even if Owens won, they would refuse to acknowledge her as their president and possibly declare independence. The bitter relationship between Owens and the NFAC was so strong for one another that many believed at the time if Owens won there would be a war for the south. Owens, for her part, didn't help to relieve tension as she routinely called the NFAC "hyper nationalistic thugs more worried about what they can squeeze from a post-war America than they are actually concerned about helping it during the war.".
As the debate about who would lead in DC went on on the front line as the sun began to set in mid-February 2031, the sound of technicals roared over the horizon, and the sight of black flags shimmered in the cold moonlight. Soon the hordes would be at the gates of the Mississippi."
