@inverted_helix it ocurred to me, since most of what we build is wood and we have our own sawmill shouldn't the construction costs be lower ?

Oh! And We've had some ideas for how keep things interested when things botch again. Which may or may not involve your family depending on what botches.
FTFY. Hmm this family is interesting to say the least. Do we have any insight on why our older siblings act the way they do? Being creepy due to competing and jockeying to assume the head of the family is entirely different from being creepy just because and also gives us an idea of how we can try to stay out of their games as much as possible.

-[X][Mina] Warn Nerissa not to trust Mina
So MV was worried this might not be obvious, but this option does involve Mina meeting Nerissa still. There's also the drawback that Mina is likely to know what you did pretty much immediately, since neither Nerissa nor Olivia are the sort that can hide their feelings.

@inverted_helix it ocurred to me, since most of what we build is wood and we have our own sawmill shouldn't the construction costs be lower ?
It was just way simpler to have it produce a set amount of money and imagine that sometimes this subtracts from building costs. Since any lumber you use yourself isn't being sold.

I don't think knowing why people's personalities developed is ever that concrete even for experts. So no, you don't really have any clue.

Thanks for calling them interesting though. It's a dash of realistic noble foibles with a bit of fantasy magnification on top.

Don't worry I noticed that. I ust figured we can't realy stop Mina from metting Nerissa at this point so better to forewarn her, that is the point of the second line, there is no way Nerissa is going to be good and hiding her felling, so let's try a bad way that can be excused be her nature.

Also the ''latter'' is suposed to imply after Mina is already gone, I supose I should clarify that.

i'm honestly curious. are we making any progress at all? because it seems like for every step forward we make we get knocked back ten because of all the bad stuff that keeps happening. and it's getting to the point where i'm thinking we should just hit a game over point so we can try again fresh since there's basically no way we can make a comeback without sage style crits for a few turns

We are making progress, it's just that right now the best moves we can make involve just sitting and not doing anything to build a cushion against our rolls. Needless to say, that doesn't get many votes. Still, I'll give it a try.

I had this very discussion with inverted_helix and I'll tell you what I told him.

If I'm honest I suspect some player annoyance is that most quests allow players to upgun much faster. Probably inappropriately after this many turns to already have lots of troops and well equipped ones. I think given the type of resistance you're facing in game with hostile wildlife and enemy forces the buildup they've achieved is actually quite good.

In a realistic take on fiction actually holding their own in this case let alone building up progress is quite impressive. I think most players are used to building up their forces a lot more by this point.

It's more like most Empire games where updates are per season, have players make more 'buildup' steam, and that likely effects perceptions. That's a bad comparison to make as Empire quests usually have you with the backing of an Empire, as opposed to Tepid financing which Tristain has from his kingdom.

Especially considering the hostile ground and opposition Tristain is facing. But I sort of get metawise why some players might not be satisfied.

In short, if you're making comparisons to progress you've made in other Empire games you're making a mistake. This quest is about holding the frontier, and is a much more realistic take of the genre than some fiction tends. Tristan was a neophyte noble, now a bit more blooded, trying to hold difficult ground with very aggressive wildlife against an intelligent threat with tepid financing from a feudal kingdom. By it's nature Tristan has limited resources and little prior experience and is trying to make gains when nature itself, not just his enemies, is fighting against him.

You can definitely make gains in quest, and indeed we're structuring our plans over not just hoping, but expecting you will. It's entirely possible to lose the quest, but that will stem from players making mistakes, not because you got a poor range outcome with the dice. Where dice rolls are unfavorable we endeavor to have it make your lives more interesting and add new plot details, not put you a debt spiral you can't recover from.

In short, trust me when I say we're careful modulating range outcomes to make for a fun game. Victory is not out of hand just because you didn't get a few crits early game. By the same token, botches won't me you fail the game. They will make your life more interesting though. :). We're actually building a range table of a colorful cast of characters and events with that in mind!

Naw, the bigger entry barrier is how voting complexity is growing. We don't exactly have a large stable of votewriters, and while I'm very happy to construct votes, RL makes doing so increasingly hard.

Could any of you explain the logic behind this plan to me ? Because right now it seens based on the idea of burin our head in the sand and hoping nothing goes wrong.

First there is leaving our manipulative assasin sister alone with our impresionale young Driad, wich simple doesn't sound lie a good idea.

Then there is using the personal action for research isntead of talking with father, wich is the think we should have done last turn since not doing so is the reason our sister is around.

Then there is using the driad action to suport the research action that needs even more investment to bring benefit isntead of the thing that should give us more income now or getting the fruits.

And then there is the hunter action, where we use both to scout even tough we only realy need one and currently have negative income, to not talk about how Olivia won't be doing anything this turn.

[X] Plan Fallout
Still hoping for some Skirmishers so we can use the Hunters to explore and learn stuff.
Also looking for a Place to build a Harbor is even more important, our little Brother could get us some Contacts.
Given his Sister we should send him some enchanted Stuff and anything we find in the Forest that can help him survive.

We are making progress, it's just that right now the best moves we can make involve just sitting and not doing anything to build a cushion against our rolls. Needless to say, that doesn't get many votes. Still, I'll give it a try.
It's a reasonable enough idea.

Hmm I don't see this as any more complex than typical empire quests. Though it is more complex than a normal quest. I would think that a lot of the unit dispositions being repeated every season would simplify it somewhat. Overall I'm fairly okay with the current voting though so not too worried about changing it. Though I did consider if the herbalist should just give a flat bonus to any botanical options instead of being a separate unit.

First there is leaving our manipulative assasin sister alone with our impresionale young Driad, wich simple doesn't sound lie a good idea.
Well in fairness your plan is risking that she is going to be annoyed at you poisoning the well after she did the courtesy of talking to you and giving you a little bit of money.

Just for your IC edification, you know Mina doesn't want to hurt Nerissa. A magical thing you don't know how it works is something not handled well with intimidation. She wants to feel Nerissa out and see what she can gain, but she's going to be very velvet glove about it.

Then there is using the personal action for research isntead of talking with father, wich is the think we should have done last turn since not doing so is the reason our sister is around.
You have indeed identified why Mina came around.

Then there is using the driad action to suport the research action that needs even more investment to bring benefit isntead of the thing that should give us more income now or getting the fruits.
This made me look at your plan a bit more closely incidentally.
-[X][Nerissa] Ask her to help organize her region of the overgrownth to produce vast amounts of food and herbs for both selling and local consupiton (Herbalist Helps)
--[X] Also ask her for some of those fruits.
I'm going to ask you to choose one or the other on this a bit, because these are both actually rather intense tasks.

Though I'm also curious, you were going to give the fruits to your father right? Or did you intend to try and put that off again?

For the matter based on her known feats, dropping a warning is not going to stop her if she intends to try anything. Just piss her off a bunch.

@Zaratustra , my plan is based around two things. First, between basic income and the sawmill we bring in 800 to our latest upkeep of 765 (might not be the right number, but it's between 7 and 8 hundred). However, we have another income stream that will activate in a turn or two, so I try to avoid spending extra money but don't feel the need to change our standard deployments to save money. We can wait a turn or two before doing anything.

Secondly, we've seen that taking actions does not guarantee success, and quite often what we get out of an action is proportional to our roll after modifiers. Therefore, I hedged my bets to try and stack modifiers wherever I could. That means not trying for a fancy "X but Y and Z and a partridge in a pear tree" vote but letting Mina do things on her own and maybe bail her out if she messes up. I loaded the dryad/herbalist/personal actions together in the hopes of something concrete, I don't really care what. I didn't speak to our father because we didn't speak with him before, he sent Mina up to get what he wants, speaking to him now won't really do much. The hunters are scouting rather than hunting because we don't need the extra income but might well need the extra scouting bonus.

Though I'm also curious, you were going to give the fruits to your father right? Or did you intend to try and put that off again?

I was afraid of that, and to answer your question honestly with the way the updates are structured and specialy now that I know actualy maingt he fruits is a season long affair I figured the actual decision on what to do with the fruits would come next turn, after the action to talk with father, so I have not made the choice yet.

First, between basic income and the sawmill we bring in 800 to our latest upkeep of 765 (might not be the right number, but it's between 7 and 8 hundred).

First mistake, you forgot the +10%, our upkeep is around 841 actualy.

I didn't speak to our father because we didn't speak with him before, he sent Mina up to get what he wants, speaking to him now won't really do much.

Except he isn't getting what he wants either way since it aparently takes three months to grow those fruits, also we still need to handle the fallout from that direction from eating the fruit, we can't just ignore him and hope he forgets, otherwise the option wouldn't be there.

I loaded the dryad/herbalist/personal actions together in the hopes of something concrete, I don't really care what.

Just sayin but the herbalist isn't likely to help with that action since messing with actual magic is kind of beyond him, also the fact you didn't use Olivia anywhere kind of contradicts the idea of focusing effort to avoid failures.

[X][Mina] Mislead Mina. Explain that due to her replanting, she's a bit grouchy, and she'd get a better impression if she met with her later.

I'd really want for the Mina votes to be SEPARATE from the plans, but no one seems to think like this. This option, aswell, seems the better for me, because if she ignores our warning she can't be mad at us for anything that happens, and if she doesn't, we have time to speak with Nerissa and maybe ask for fruit, if we really do want to give them. Not like we are obliged to obey our father demands right now, we can pretty much enter a bureocratic cicle of speaking with him, maybe even speaking with other noble families to guarantee our father won't simply send Mina to get us dead.

Can we even known if/when Mina is gone? She is an assassin, by definition she is good at moving unseen.

i'm honestly curious. are we making any progress at all? because it seems like for every step forward we make we get knocked back ten because of all the bad stuff that keeps happening. and it's getting to the point where i'm thinking we should just hit a game over point so we can try again fresh since there's basically no way we can make a comeback without sage style crits for a few turns

We ARE making steady progress, actually. We have more troops than we could hope to keep in the beggining, and we still get a good income, bigger than before, while having a couple of usefull structures. It's slow and somewhat grating, but that should be expected, this is not a easy do what you want quest.

1. Mina CAN protect herself, she can even be considered a Hero Unit on her own right, and she's yet a child. Sure, she can be easily impressed, but it's not like she would believe Mina over us, and we should continue our contact with her, thus guaranteeing we teach her right from wrong, at least as much as we want to.
2. Talking with our father right now is completely useless. COMPLETELY. He already sent Mina to deal with us, meaning she is in charge of this now, and there is no reason to contact him unless we want to undermine her and go behind her back to deal with him... Which could end up very badly. Very, very badly.
3. We already know research here is hard, but also unique and can bring us lot's of good things, even incredible income or unique resources. Thus, having our lil girl help in our efforts can make the diference between heaven and hell.
4. I don't know exactly about Olivia, but isn't she always helping us and thus why we even can do two actions? If that is so, for me, it's implied whenever we don't give her an action, she will be together with us, which by itself will mae our actions safer and easier.
5. For hunters... How did you come to the idea we have negative income? You yourself said later that we have 800+ so... We are not lacking for income, but the hunters have already helped alot in those last seasons by scouting, we shouldn't stop what is working.

Like I said before, we can't deal directly with him. We deal with Mina, she is explicitly here to deal with us regarding the fruits. Really, forget about sending him a message now, this will only make things worse for us, if not because of her, because this takes longer and our father won't like it, and maybe because he will see this as us ignoring his orders, after all he did order Mina to make sure we deliver the fruits.

Herbalist don't deal with magic, yes, but knows ALOT more about plants than us, which by itself can be usefull since we would be working inside the overgrowth.

@inverted_helix can we assume that Olivia will stay beside us unless told otherwise? This was my assumption ever since we got her, but this doesn't seem to be the view of others, so to keep this clear, I'm asking you.

On the Fallout vote. On these bits
----[X] And don't forget to warn Olivia later of the same after Mina is gone.
-----[X] And call Leo, you are going to need the helpto drive the point home for Olivia and you still need to berate him for not

You already know IC as Tristan there's now way Leo is willing to get involved in this matter. He'll state you both don't pay him enough to get involved in matters involving your sister, and this falls outside his duties as matters between you and your servant are your responsibility. If you can't convince her something don't expect me too!

Olivia as noted doesn't see Mina as scary at all, and sees you as silly for insisting she is!

Wise to keep in mind Mina's description in mind. 4. Mina: Tristan would describe her as a total sociopath, but of the sort that's quite good at hiding it. Has apparently become an assassin. Indicated she'd kill Nicola when they were children, and Nicola believed it.(edited)

@Metrux

A decent request. Could all plans edit to specifically call for the vote on what to do with Mina separate from the main season plan?

Yeah I kept the description in mind, it is the whole reason to call Leo since if we could convince Olivia on our own we would have done so already.

Now to Leo :
I seriously don't pay you enouht to even warn me she is coming when you see her ?
Your duties include training people, can't we just file this under honing her threath acessement skill ? I wouldn't be asking if I had any better idea.

I think you ment Nerissa here at the start. See here is the problema, Nerissa in likely the most innocent and impressionable person around, and Olivia proves we can count on warning people about our sister after the fact. Seriously if we can't convince Olivia who loves us enought to be a stated trait of our sister true nature can we realy count on convicing Nerissa after the fact ?

2. Talking with our father right now is completely useless. COMPLETELY. Don't you think if the situation had changed the wording of the option would have changed back already ? It still says we should talk with our father ASAP.

3. We already know research here is hard, but also unique and can bring us lot's of good things, even incredible income or unique resources. Thus, having our lil girl help in our efforts can make the diference between heaven and hell.
As the one who came up with the option I completely agree, my only complaint was the timing.

How ? we are going to either talk with father or do experients on Nerissa grove so I don't see how she would help. Besides assigning her to an action was always something we could do on top of the help wich alows us to take two personal actions.

5. For hunters... How did you come to the idea we have negative income? You yourself said later that we have 800+ so... We are not lacking for income, but the hunters have already helped alot in those last seasons by scouting, we shouldn't stop what is working.
Math
+600 season payment +200 sawmill profit
Our income is 800 on the dot.
Upkeep next turn: 765+10%

Our Upkeep is 765+76= 841
Income-Upkeep = 800-841= -41 Aka negative income.

Also I completely agree with not stoping with what is working, wich is why I my plan has hunters scounting.

No we would be working inside Nerissa grove, can you elaborate on how the Heralist would be helpfull ?

Yes, I meant Nerissa. But I never meant to make her see our sister as bad ^^ We can just talk about what she talks with our pseudo daughter and then speak about what is or not bad, and why or not what they spoke is true. Why convince our sister is bad? This will only confuse the girl. We should instead focus on what Nerissa learns from her, and try to steer in the right direction. Yes, she will still receive some influence, but she has to learn about bad things aswell, the world we live in is not a nice one ;)

Actually, no. When I used to QM most of the time I didn't give the players the knowledge of mostly anything, you needed to figure the clues yourself, or work IC to get this knowledge, in which case I'd write it off the update to inform the players. I don't know exactly how our QM here works, but clearly isn't giving us all the info, and we should speak with our father after we deal with Mina, but not during. I really as of you, please think on how she and our father, as they have been seen, would react to us cutting through in such a way.

Do you think it would've helped our lumberjacks if they knew about the trees that make they burn? Do you think there aren't other such plants, that Nerissa won't even know might be bad for us? Do you think we can't use some special herbs that might be near Nerissa or simply in the way? I mean, those are all usefull, and come from the herbalist, so even though she can't directly help with enchanting, she can probably make our life easier. Not the best use for her, I plainly admit, but it does give some help.

This equation seems really strange. How is our money reserve growing almost every season if our income is negative? How are we paying for building things if we're actually loosing money, instead of making enough to use? I didn't bother to do a direct calculation before because in each update we see the money going up, but from this perspective there is something very strange over this.
