The Wild Edge (Fantasy Border Outpost)

I'm going with
[X] Plan Curiosity.
for now.

@Zaratustra @Nevill
What's your Opinion on getting one Unit of Skirmishers to scout so we can use both Hunter Units to reduce Upkeep?
Also how about a Action to try fishing?
It could work as a Action for other Units than Hunters to reduce Upkeep.

Highly in favor, but...

...where do we find the money for that? To take any additional unit with us we'll need to leave some other one out of the plan.

[X] Plan Curiosity.

I don't expect the fruit to do any harm unless we roll a nat 1. Trees, and by extension dryads, make fruit for the dual purposes of getting some sort of animal to eat it or feeding the seeds within for their growth into new plants. There's a pretty strong evolutionary incentive to get good at both of these. That isn't going to change just because we added magic and some intelligent design. It might end up being some form of vaguely watery nut that's super bitter because it's optimized for providing fertilizer to a seedling, but it's almost certainly not going to kill us or make us ill.

My fear is completely diferent from you people, and alot more into the natural Dryad legends. Instead of doing something bad to our body, she can do something bad to our mind, like bewitching us, or even making us directly addicted to her sweetness. Yes, this can be done without her wanting, since this is a natural part of a dryad's biology, and neither her or the others interact much with humans. That said, I don't think we will suffer from that, or not in a single use but...

@inverted_helix couldn't we cut a part of the fruit and give to a rabbit, then if nothing happens we eat the rest?

@Nevill if we can first feed the rabbit a small part, would you change it in the plan?

Basicaly same as Nevill, my plan was already pushing our finances as far as possible and the camp folowers are both cheaper and whitout upkeep.
As far as fishing goes between the map and the hunter option for finding space for a dock I don't think there is anywhere we could actualy do it.

Since when were those here?
There's a huge number of plants an animals in this forest. Not all of them have been encountered (or generated).

We need fucking mail already.
Mail's a big step up in expense. Though I probably should figure out a cost on that.

Wait, we only have 587 Denier; suppose we pay 200 for Construction Crew and 100 for the Herbalist... we are left with 287. If we replenish the worker losses for 100 Den, we are left with 187 Den. That's not enough to hire another unit of Camp Followers. And if we replenish the footmen and the hunters, we'll have even less.
I would like to bring attention to the fact in this system we pay our debts and receive our income simultaneously, so while it is going to use soe of net turn income we can totaly afford the Camp Folowers, and we need those since our camp is way bigger then when we started.
It is correct that the debts and income are resolved simultaneously.

@inverted_helix couldn't we cut a part of the fruit and give to a rabbit, then if nothing happens we eat the rest?
You don't have a ready preservation method. So if you cut it and use a piece you'd really only be able to observe a short time frame result before trying it yourself or it would spoil.

Also how about a Action to try fishing?

The coastline is pretty much a line of cliffs. There's an action to scout it for a safe route down, or the best place to build one. At present you can't reach the water to fish though.

It doesn't have to be this Turn. I just wanted to bring it up as a Way to reduce Upkeep and maybe get a Bonus on Forest scouting.

The coastline is pretty much a line of cliffs. There's an action to scout it for a safe route down, or the best place to build one. At present you can't reach the water to fish though.
This could be useful. Fishing should reduce Upkeep and shipping Stuff should be cheaper than moving it over Land, at least for bulky and heavy Stuff like Wood and Supplies.
If the Magic Effect reaches across the Water then we could do the Enchanting on a Ship, save from Animals inside the Forest.
Maybe something for the next Turn, the scouting I mean.

One reason I didn't buy the Camp Followers is that I would really prefer hiring a second combat unit, but we don't seem to have enough money for it.
And if I can't do that, I want to at least be able to put our two construction crews to work, and build something that isn't a palisade this year. We need to set aside some money for that.
@Nevill if we can first feed the rabbit a small part, would you change it in the plan?
I don't mind, but I also don't think it will save you from the thing you are afraid of. How do you measure out the degree of 'bewitchment' in a rabbit?

If you are fine with what inverted_helix said, and still want it, I'll amend the option.

Though personally, I rather like the narrative implications of putting enough trust in our dryad to gulp that thing down without double-checking. Tristan isn't a very sophisticated fellow, sometimes acting purely on impulse. It didn't steer him wrong yet! :p

Ohhh I don't mind. If I was REALLY worried about the outcome I wouldn't have voted for that :p Was just a small thought, since people we're so worried of this fruit maing us sick...

How could you say no to Nerissa's adorable face? You couldn't really. So you went ahead and tried it.

You bite into the strange blue fruit. It has a crisp firmness like an apple, but the juices flowing into your mouth have an intensity unlike anything you'd ever eaten. Your eyes close and your body shudders in pleasure. It's the most ecstatic experience you've ever had. A taste of the divine. You can't help but devour the rest of it seizing every drop of the exquisite flavor.

Your vision grows hazy and your thoughts clouded and disjointed. Reality shatters into tiny moments of lucidity slipping through greased fingers. Images, sounds, tastes, nothing you can hold onto.

As if waking from a dream reality begins to pull together. Your mouth tastes of bile even as your throat is parched. There's a pool of foul smelling vomit beneath your face. Things come into sharper focus as you notice you're kneeling over it. You push yourself to your feet, taking in Nerissa's grove around you.

"Can you hear me Tristan?" a very worried Olivia asks. "If this didn't work I'll make you into firewood," she hisses at an equally worried Nerissa.

The third woman in the clearing is new, although ancient would be a better word for describing her. She's much more visibly a dryad than Nerissa; her surface is covered in bark rather than anything approximating skin, and her hair peeks out through leaves rather than the other way around. "It's a good thing this was a simple matter then, it would be a shame if I had to kill her little pet," she speaks in a slow grinding voice more like wood against wood.

You try to speak, but instead only manage to cough. Olivia rushes to offer you a waterskin, and you gulp down water greedily. After quenching your thirst slightly you try to speak again. "What...happened?" you manage to spit out.

"I'm sorry!" Nerissa cries in tears bowing her head even while keeping her distance.

"This precocious sprout managed to ensnare a man before she knew what to do with one," the elder dryad says, ending in a creaking laugh.

"She bewitched you! You were just emptied out as if your mind was gone. You wouldn't leave her grove, would barely eat or drink unless she told you to. You shouldn't have let your guard down!" Olivia cries as she hugs you so tightly you feel like your ribs might crack, and that with her gloves on. She buries her face in your shoulder and you can feel it growing wet. You're a little confused as you don't remember any of that.

"I didn't mean to, I'm really really sowwy," Nerissa blubbers, "I didn't know it would do that."

Awkwardly patting Olivia on the back you turn to the only one that seems capable of elaborating right now and ask, "Could you explain a bit more?"

"The sapling over there tried to make the 'tastiest' fruit for you she possibly could, and really overdid it, then couldn't manage to undo it. She's been increasingly frantic about figuring it out, but she still couldn't fix it. Too much power put into it." Each word is slow and deliberate. She pauses a bit, and you get the impression she's trying to figure out what to say, but not necessarily the truth. "I decided to come sort things out for her."

"Well you have my thanks for that."

"Your thanks? What use do I have for the thanks of a mayfly. I did it for her, because she seemed distraught for your state," she says before striding off deeper into the forest. You aren't sure that you quite believe that's the whole truth though.

Your legs seemed shaky when you tried to walk; it seems you've been out of it for a couple months, so you end up carried back towards your base by Olivia. It's a terribly embarrassing position to be bridal carried by the much smaller woman, but it was certainly faster. She sets you down before you reach the outpost though, so you can wobble your way in without being seen that way.

By the time you reach the gates Leo is already waiting for you. You assume alerted by sentries. The guards are more than a little nervous though.

"It's good to see you about again, was beginning to worry I'd lost you," he opens with as he accompanies you to your cabin.

"I'm sure you were fine on your own," you respond playfully.

"But it would be a terrible black mark on my record to have lost my employer," he counters automatically before darkening.

"I take it things didn't go so well?" you ask as Olivia closes the door and pushes you into a seat before busying herself making something for you to eat.

"Well I investigated of course, but I have no head for magic. I wasn't sure what could be done at all. The dryad didn't seem to have intended it, but even if she had I didn't know if attacking her would make things worse." He shrugs. "So I let her try to fix it for now and focused on handling what I could. I had your plans for the season and sent word to the duke of the course of events. Though I couldn't leave the camp to do recruiting with you incapacitated."

"Of course, you had to stay to run things."

"The duke felt you were damn foolish for eating a magic fruit in the first place. We've been exchanging messages as fast as the messengers can flow it felt like, and he's been considering who would replace you if you hadn't recovered in another month."

Troublesome. You didn't want the position in the first place, but that touch of noble pride you have would be seriously upset at being removed from it, especially after investing so much work in it.

"At the very least that can be skipped now. He did do us a favor recruiting the forces we wanted," Leo continues, the relief clear in his tone. "He felt we clearly needed the reinforcements immediately, which we did. Then he asked me to send him some of the fruit that bewitched you though, so that it could be properly studied rather than blindly eaten," his tone manages to convey that Leo feels as peeved at your reckless choice as much as your father does. "I told him that I wasn't going to mess with anything magical enough to disable a noble enchanter such as yourself," his falsetto is surprisingly good.

You suppose that likely worked. Of course that just kicks it to you. You'll likely be directed to acquire some for him now. Though whether giving your father magical mind control fruits is a good idea is… well you don't really know. You've always thought him a rather good ruler, though not a good father.

"Really that's the best news I have for you. Olivia refused to do anything but tend to you-"

"Of course!" Olivia interrupts setting a tray of far too much food in front of you for you to actually eat, though her look informs you that you're required to try. "I certainly couldn't trust her to look after you."

"But the hunters did quite well without her," Leo continues with only an eyeroll to note the interruption. "The sawmill did fine as well. It's everything else that seems to have gone to hell."

You start to eat slowly, gesturing for him to go on. Your body seems to suddenly remember that you're starving. Olivia stops staring you into submission once you start eating, instead moving to sweep the surprising amount of dust collected around the room.

"The group of hunters sent to gather samples and map," he scoffs, "the forest took massive losses. I can't even pin down the causes on all of them. I think at least some of them just deserted given their already low morale and you being missing. The ones that returned mostly brought back bits of things they knew to be safe already. Though that might contribute to why they're the ones that survived. The mapping was useless as I figured it would be. They're no cartographers and marks like big trees or streams move around too much in the Overgrowth, and you can't see the mountains through the leaves either." He gestures with his hands.

You'd say something, but you're busy eating. Olivia carefully sweeps around your chair a bit too much, your clothes brushing against each other.

"Then the orcs of course had to make things worse. Normally I don't think they'd have attacked medium infantry if they could avoid it, but our footmen without any scouting coverage were just too appealing a target. They set up a textbook perfect ambush and wiped out one patrol completely. After those losses I had to consolidate the patrols for safety and the orcs were able to sneak through to try to inflict some damage on the base. Fortunately the wildlife alone keeps our people mostly inside the walls and they didn't bring any siege equipment. So they just picked off some of our levy and then went back to raiding the lands beyond us."

That's practically a gut punch all on its own. Given the danger of the forest it's sometimes hard to keep in mind it's not what you're stationed here to stop. Olivia has moved on to dusting, though you rather doubt she needs to dust your chair.

(In case it wasn't obvious, you were entranced for most of a season)
(hunters 2 -40% morale broken, footmen -20% morale medium, levy -10%, merchant cost increased +5%)
(+50% construction crew strength, +1 construction crew, +10% footmen, +20% hunters 2, +herbalist)
(Automatic replacements adjusted to 60 a turn, because replacement costs adjusted to match the current unit costs rather than original ones.)

Plans for Winter: (Base costs shown, increase 10% for merchants issue)

You now have 2 construction actions:
[][Construction] Improve the wall with guard towers offering some protection from ranged weapons and a higher vantage point. (50 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
[][Construction] Reinforce the extended palisade (2 actions to complete) [More difficult in winter]
[][Construction] Expand the barracks to deal with a doubled number of men, taking into account the need for it to be off the ground from the start this time. (150 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
-[] Inside the wall
-[] Outside the wall (in danger from wildlife)
-[] Build in the Dryad's territory
[][Construction] Build a woodworking workshop to produce something better than raw timber. Will require hiring workers separately. (100 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
-[] Inside the wall
-[] Outside the wall (in danger from wildlife)
-[] Build in the Dryad's territory
[][Construction] Build a rabbit pen? (25 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
[][Construction] Write-in

Given your current weakness you will take -10 to personals next turn. Same rules about 2x d85s or 1x 1d100.
[][Personal] You could produce some basic enchanted gear for one of your units. Sharper blades and harder armor are staples for a reason. (100 Denier in needed materials)
-[] Specify a unit.
[][Personal] Have Leo give you a bit of training. However much you hate it, being better at fighting will help a lot if something is trying to eat you. (Must be taken with appropriate Captain action)
[][Personal] Speak to your father. It might be a good idea.
[][Personal] Recruit basic units. Specify what kind. Will only return in spring due to winter travel being too difficult. (Will allow you to set orders in advance, but what happens more variable)
-[] Replace losses, 150 denier
-[] What units?
[][Personal] Recruit one Specialist unit (Enchanter, Elite, Woodworkers, Healer, Potioneer) These units need special persuasion or negotiation so can't be hired in bulk.
[][Personal] Experiment on the effects of enchanting within the Overgrowth.
[][Personal] Write-in

Nerissa is feeling completely awful about things. If you wanted to transplant her you're sure she'd agree now. She'll probably do anything you want right now that's within her powers. Asking about a couple more of those fruits for your father might be a good idea too.
[][Nerissa] ?

(1 Hunter unit available)
[][Hunters] Hunt for food, reduce upkeep by 50
[][Hunters] Scout to reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Hunters] Catch a bunch of rabbits for the rabbit pen. (Requires rabbit pen.)
[][Hunters] Explore the forest, collect flora and fauna samples. Attempt to map out the notable locations

[][Levy] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Levy] Train with the captain (must be taken with captain action, is not advised at this time)
[][Levy] Guard
-[] The base and sawmill
-[] The construction crew
-[] The merchants that bring your supplies (eliminate 10% modifier)

[][Footmen] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Footmen] Train with the captain (must be taken with captain action, is not advised at this time)
[][Footmen] Guard
-[] The base and sawmill
-[] The construction crew
-[] The merchants that bring your supplies (eliminate 10% modifier)

[][Herbalist] Assign to enhance another action having to do with plants.
[][Herbalist] Independent write-in action, requires escort if acting within the Overgrowth

[][Captain] Command troops, raising morale and effectiveness
[][Captain] Train Olivia
[][Captain] Recruit new units. Specify what kind.
-[] Replace losses, 150 denier
-[] What units?
[][Captain] Train regulars (must be taken with appropriate action)
[][Captain] Train you (must be taken with appropriate action)

418 starting -609 upkeep this turn +600 season payment +200 sawmill profit -150 replacements - 300 recruitment +60 hunting = 219
Upkeep next turn: 755+10% (100 you +100 leo +100 sawmill + 200 construction crews +80 hunters + 45 levies +80 footmen +50 herbalist) - 200 Sawmill profit

AN: So to clarify this turn a little. The fruit was a DC80 to be no side effects. Beating DC20 but below 80 would be you get food poisoning lose an action to being sick, but not really a big deal. You failed even that. So you triggered the bewitchment effect. I will tell you that it was already decided that would be a thing before @Metrux brought it up, which made him mentioning it pretty funny, even more so when the dice dictated it would happen. Fortunately crying girls are hard to ignore no matter your species, so one of the elders came and fixed you up. Of course not everyone's just going to forget that happened.

Compared to last turn the orcs had a -20 to their roll. They rolled 99 naturally. Your own rolls weren't very good. So they punched your faces in a bit and then took a pillage break. Your footmen are way more durable than levies to be clear. A levy unit would have been devastated rather than damaged. This was just that bad a situation. Taking away both scouts at the same time was also bad.

Let me take this oportunity to say, I told you so, and let me repeat it, I told you so, realy it is in moment like this that you truly understand why curiosity killed the cat is such a famous saying.

Anyway right now I thinking we take advantage and find a large enought pot to make Nerissa portable and work things from there, what do you people think ?

Edit:

[X] Plan Silver Lining
-[X][Construction] Expand the barracks to deal with a doubled number of men, taking into account the need for it to be off the ground from the start this time. (150 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
--[X] Inside the wall
-[X][Construction] Build a woodworking workshop to produce something better than raw timber. Will require hiring workers separately. (100 Denier) [More difficult in winter]
--[X] Inside the wall
-[X][Personal] Recruit one Specialist unit (Woodworkers)
-[X][Nerissa] Ask her to transplant her beside you base.
--[X]Olivia and Herbalist help.
-[X][Hunters] Scout to reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
-[X][Levy] Guard
--[X] The base and sawmill
-[X][Footmen] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
-[X][Captain] Command troops, raising morale and effectiveness

Anyway here is what I got, basicaly most of the plan is locked, we need workshop to not have negative income, need barracks due to winter and morale and need every combat unit where they are for obivious reason, and between the -10 to personal actions and need to get the woodworkers whitout fail we can't realy afford a second personal action so sadly father will have to wait spring, hopefuly the situation doesn't worsen.

The silver lining is that now Nerissa is willing to be transplanted, since figuring out the best place to put her would require a lot of research we don't have isntead we turn her into a poted plant, the best part is that this way she can help us explore the florest, specialy the center.

Edit2: Changed plan from pot to just putting her next to our base due to new information, at the end of day the tradeoff isn't worthy it since we are unlikely to be in possition to explore the center anytime soon and we can always get her a vase latter.

Holy shit, did that go bad as expected! :D
Who knew curiosity was such an expensive maiden to court? Ah, doesn't matter, had fruit! Delicious~.

Transplanting Nerissa closer to our for would be pretty sweet... wouldn't that confer a natural scouting bonus when her grove takes? She is seemingly aware of units entering the vicinity of her domain, as seen with the hunters. Of course, we would probably be expected to defend her if need arises. It's pretty good, then, that the forest doesn't burn, or I would constantly worry about her well-being.

And we can finally start on the workshop if she comes along!

Does she have to grow her grove from scratch, or does she 'take over' the existing trees?

Mind-controlling fruits, huh? Well, if we ever need our inheritance situation straightened out, we know just whom to call!

Me aparently, and yes it does matter since we may be cleaning up this mess for the next year or two, so don't go thinking yourself funny already, there is no satisfaction to bring you back here .

And we can finally start on the workshop if she comes along!
Explain ? I have no idea why we would need her, and honestly this only delayed stuff.

We have no idea, wich is why I am going for a pot so we can learn things.

Mind-controlling fruits, huh? Well, if we ever need our inheritance situation straightened out, we know just whom to call!
Now if only the control was good enought to foil anyone, then the only problem would be our four older siblings getting extremely suspicious.

Now, that's a little bit hostile, isn't it?

I know I was taking a gamble, and I am sorry it went wrong and we got burned, but... that's the nature of it? It doesn't really matter if you can clearly see the downside, since you are hoping for a good roll to carry you through, and accept the consequences when it does not.

We have suffered a major delay due to losses, a few minor, but lasting penalties, and got an opportunity which doesn't really compensate for everything that went wrong. What can you do but laugh it off? Wringing hands about failures never seemed particularly helpful to me.

...normally, these things make me attempt even riskier gambits to make the pendulum swing back, but thankfully, I am not the only one playing the game.

Explain ? I have no idea why we would need her, and honestly this only delayed stuff.
The one we need to keep the magic inside the wood.
It's not to say there are no options though. A few ideas occur to you:
1. Set up woodcrafting inside the forest to make the mundane products, then an operation outside to immediately enchant them after they come out. This would require a force to defend the workers and facilities inside the forest on the long term.
2. Research how enchanting inside the forest works and hope that it doesn't mess with you too much when you set up the whole production inside it, facing the same problems of the previous one only magnified.
Not the one you are building, though eventually I expect to combine the two.

I count that as a success.

We probably want to enchant the pot as well I think. Potting trees tend to stunt them longterm.

Yes, but it is late, I am salty and you trying to laugh it off like the cat that got the canary make keeping the analogy going irressitible so sue me.

I don't realy think father hearing about this realy counts as minor, trough I will probaly agree with you more on the latter part after some sleep.

Not the one you are building, though eventually I expect to combine the two.
Yeah, I tough so, still not seeing it since as far as I can see the timetable just moved from probably next turn to maybe next year.

As soon as we can spare the action, wich isn't now.

[X] Plan Silver Lining

Alright.
Can we specify to keep her within the near edge of the forest? Leaving the forest growth field may end badly.

it seems you've been out of it for a couple months
well we just pulled a Rip Van Winkle.

merchant cost increased +5%
Aaaaand of course our business partners are throwing a shitfit.

well we just pulled a Rip Van Winkle.
Pretty much yeah. While you were under if someone told you to do something, like eat, you'd do it. Olivia has been by your side constantly but of course you recall none of it.

Aaaaand of course our business partners are throwing a shitfit.
We actually debated for a while how to handle this. The Orcs critted which we wanted to represent. Throw in a crit fail on your patrol, and this was our take after some deliberations on it. We tried to spread costs around a bit to make it less overwhelming.
