The Steep Path Ahead [Familiar of Zero AU]

Ironically, that fits with canon Saito's characterization.

It's either runes or poor characterization on the part of the LN. Pretty much everyone acknowledges that the LN was not a masterpiece and so much more could have been done with the setting. If people have tried to 'fix' Louise in some of their fanfics, it ought to be okay to 'fix' Saito.

I think even gay men would be baffled by Tiffania's natural gifts
understandable when one considers that tiffania counts like 3 woman in the harem scale, ..or 15 luises depending on how you count

....and now I'm gonna take some brain-bleach in order to forget how I just imagined a harem made out of 15 prude, cynical and violent girls who all prentend to be male and also prentend to be the male protagonists gay love interests, who by the way is completly straight

a harem made out of 15 prude, cynical and violent girls who all prentend to be male and also prentend to be the male protagonists gay love interests, who by the way is completly straight

And man doesn't that sound like a seriously bad harem comedy

With very nice hair though. :p

Wait, here it is, from Baka-Tsuki:
Mind you that this probably not entirely accurate as this is a rather biased version from back in Japan where there are some insane expectations of how studious and smart one should be, plus he quite probably lacked in real motivation to study and generally carry on with his duties and obligations. Or at least just that his talents were not really related to standard academics and he probably would have had a much better time if he had found something he loved to do instead of just carrying on the stablished route to become yet another Japanese salaryman. :p

yeah especially when you compare it to the knowledge of a person from the middle ages,
compared to them Saito is with his knowledge from school, understanding of society, first world experience and simple commonsense incredible smart

He has an indebt knowledge about physics, biology, mathematics and might even have some knowledge about economics (I don't know if the japanese are taught this in school),
example
compared to the average commoner saito has a much greater understanding about the workings of the world (corruption, geopolitic, world economic) just because he was forced to watch the news when he ate breakfast with his parents and having to study for history and politc(again I don't know if the japanese are taught this in school) test in school, when your average commoner doesn't have a single clue about it because he was never confronted with such a situation and has no experience in it

another example could be about genre saveyness like we saw when it came to looting the enemy or during the zombie apokalypse where that literally saved their lives, that he simple acquired through watching movies and animes or playing rpgs

These are all part of saitos skill set, that simple come from being an average japanese high school boy

I don't know if high-school physics and biology really are useful enough in that setting to be much of an advantage, especially for someone who apparently didn't do too well in school. On the other hand, you could be right about that degree of math being a handy skill.

Kinda but only that. Specifically, do not confuse information with intelligence. Sure he has a lot more education and knowledge than the vast majority of the populatio of Halk, even some nobles included. But that doesn't mean that they are automatically less intelligent than him. Much like our world, there will be geniuses and there will be morons, all it changes is how much they have to be geniuses and morons about, so to speak. :p

Sigh being from a more teleological advanced civilization does not make you smarter than people from a less technologically advanced civilization.

Agreed. Aside from his familiar powers his most useful (and markeable) skill is probably his skills at math, even if they were extremely subpar back in Japan. Not that the areas of math he already learned do not exist in Halk, because they probably do, but the thing is that the vast majority of the population do not have the training he has on it. It was simply not that valued of a skillset outside the basic "don't get cheated while buying/selling stuff.", at least outside academics, big merchants and stewards (most of which are probably minor nobility or even commoners in the retainer of the noble who actually hold dominion over the land). While sadly he probably won't be able to reproduce double entry accounting, he nearly certainly at least good enough to become a steward over smaller fiefs.

an advantage definitly not in world where the rule is Willpower<Brawn<Brain
But fact is that saitos incomplete education can still be said to be the best in the whole of Halk

It does make you smarter, just Booksmart , you have a much greater understanding on many different fields(Biology Vitamins, Bacteria, etc. Physics: Gravity, Newtons Laws, Atoms, etc.),but sadly not more intellegent,
Saito can be said to be the most educated individual and the greatest amalgamation of knowledge on the continent (unless of course the elves are also super smart besides being cheatingly good at magic and able to have gravity defeying boobies) but sadly he is not intelligent enough to apply it or even use it

Degree of Education =/= Level of Intelligence. I work in IT, and I can't count how many tickets submitted by PhD holders I have had to work where the issue is in the user guide, or is otherwise some kind of simple user error. All an education really means about a person, to society, can be summed up with two things. The first is persistence. You have to be persistent to finish any degree. The second is a variety of low-level background knowledge that is expected with each type of degree. I say low level because that C student that can't remember roughly half the content of every class? They get the same degree as the A student. All the degree proves is that both have that minimum amount of background knowledge.

Now, something that is a little more on point; it is related to Saito's handling due to his movie and game knowledge. It is surprising that his experience with said mediums is helping him out this much. It is hilarious, actually. The zombie movie that helped with the basement earlier actually made me laugh out loud.

Chapter Sixty-Nine
Chapter Sixty-Nine

Louise managed to splutter out an excuse that the definitely abnormal girl accepted with a small smile, all the while holding back the little rascal that could learn a few tips on being a good boy from the orphans Louise had known of.

She stepped out into the sun and winced as she used an arm to cover her eyes.

"Oh, Sir Louis has woken up!" Josette said cheerfully, waving her staff from near the helm where Captain Bleu was, the man and his foppish hat being accompanied by a young girl with a spyglass in her hands.

Marteau was amidst the sails, but she would have words with the ex-chef later. As it was, she wanted to know what was going on. It took the combined efforts of Captain Bleu and Josette to get the most out of it. She had been knocked out slightly before Saito had, but the boy had then woken up and decided in his stupidity to complete the mission without even bothering to think it through, and had somehow managed to end the Undead plague in the capital city of Londinium all the while burning down the palace itself.

He had then managed to reach, thanks to Josette worrying enough to go look for him, the ship that Captain Bleu had found while venturing towards the docks in an effort to get started on restoring power to the windstones. They had found a survivor, a child by the name of Damien, and then had set off once Josette had returned.

Jeanette was still sleeping off her exhaustion of Willpower from powering up the ship with every little ounce of magic she had, and Bleu wasn't in better conditions, but someone needed to stay at the helm to guide the ship.

The problem was that below them was no sea, but the ground. The typical moor of Albion's soil was all that Louise could see around her.

"Well, the blockade is quite extensive since most of Reconquista was forced off the land," Bleu said as he clutched the helm tightly. "So we are moving through the land route towards Newcastle. Hopefully the Reconquista won't have kept up the pressure against the Royalists, but just in case it has, we've got two flags!" Bleu added cheerfully with two fingers raised. "One with the symbol of Reconquista, and one with the symbol of the Royalists! We've got both of them up right now with Marteau standing by."

The man sighed, "Course, it's possible Newcastle fell to the Undead and there's no one left. If that's the case, then we'll just have to gather what fresh supplies of windstones we can and head off back to La Rochelle!"

"That is nice," Louise said with a nod. "Now excuse me. I feel the need to wake up my partner just so I can beat him unconscious a few times."

"But why?" Josette asked, clutching her staff as she began to follow Louise, who had a thunderous fury to her steps.

"Because the idiot nearly succeeded in killing himself," Louise replied. "Whatever he did, however he did it, he was covered in blood from head to toe, and that's clearly not normal, is it!?" Louise snapped. "Why didn't anyone give him a wash when he came back? My clothes are all ruined now-" she grumbled, not really caring about the clothes.

Josette simply giggled. "Oh, that is right, Saito is Mister Louis' important partner. Of course you would be worried about him, but should you really hit him? He is a hero who saved Albion from the Undead that plagued it! Maybe you should reward him with a kiss!" here Josette nodded to herself, "That's how it is in stories! The sleeping beauty, woken up by the kiss of her true love!"

"He could have died," Louise said curtly, staring right into Josette's eyes. "Do you know what it means?" she added icily. "When you're dead, you're in Founder Brimir's arms forever. There's no coming back. You can't just turn back time. A dead person is dead forever," she narrowed her eyes as Josette seemed about to interrupt her, "So I am angry. I am angry and I am hurt that he could not wait for me to wake up, and I don't care if he succeeded now, because if tomorrow he does the same and he fails, then I'll be the one left to pick up the pieces of his scattered corpse to sew them back together, and then I'll have to present it to his family saying that he died bravely," Louise's breathing hitched for a brief instant, "but they would rather have their son back."

"But you still don't have to hit him," Josette pointed out. "You could talk to him!" she hazarded, her smile set on her face.

"He's the type of guy that if you don't kick him once in a while doesn't learn the lesson," Louise said. "And I'm not going to blast him off the side of the ship. I'm just going to slap some sense into him. He'll understand it's because I care."

"Why not hug him then?" Josette said with a cheerful clap of her hands. "It's better than a slap, and it's still a great show of caring!"

Louise spluttered, her rage turning into smoldering ash through the sheer innocence and cheer of the girl in front of her. "No, that would be something he'd like," she added with her 'manly' voice. "I can't have him think he'll get rewards if he does that."

Josette blushed. "L-Like k-kissing?!"

Louise turned crimson herself. "T-That's not something you should worry about!" she snapped hotly. "You need to find a good man willing to court you properly and then move on to discussing the terms of a dowry, and finally-"

"That's complicated," Josette said, sticking her tongue out, "And boring. Aren't you and Sir Saito together without that silly stuff?"

Louise spluttered, flailing her arms around. "We are two manly men!" she said hotly and 'roughly'. "We are not supposed to marry! And anyway-we are travelling to bring him back home to his family. He was separated from them a long time ago, so-"

"But...but you love him, don't you?" Josette said softly. "So-so I'm sure if you asked, he'd stay with you!" she nodded, her voice clear of all doubts.

Louise bristled. "I-I do," she said in the end. This was 'Louis' the adventurer after all, not 'Louise'. "But it's not meant to be, and it can never be. That's all there is to it. It's better this way, less people will hurt."

Josette frowned, and then shook her head sadly. "Well-I'm sure Sir Louis put a lot of thought into this!" she added. "But Sir Saito really did what he thought would be best for you, Sir Louis. He kept looking at you when he decided to go burn the palace down," Josette smiled warmly. "I wish I had someone who cared for me that much. I mean, I love my brothers and they love me too, but someone who cares in a-in a different way, yeah," she nodded, visibly pleased, and then cheerfully stopped midway through the hallway to Saito's room. "I'll go see Jeanette! Maybe she woke up hungry, and that would make her grumpy~"

Leaving the bizarre young girl behind, Louise stepped inside the room where Saito hadn't as much as moved. He hadn't removed his shoes, or his armor, and frankly looked as if he had showered in blood -now that she had spent some time outside, the smell inside the room was positively disgusting. He still had the guts to sleep peacefully with his arms around a pillow, smearing it with dried flakes of blood.

"Enough is enough," Louise muttered, stepping into the kitchen where a half-startled abomination slightly jumped aside at her passage. She grabbed without a word an empty pot, filled it with water, and with a chunk of soap for good measure walked back inside her and Saito's room, a towel slung on her shoulder.

She had cleaned enough clothes and children back in the orphanage.

One blood-covered boy would be no different.

She'd still be allowed to marry after doing this.

Really, what's the point of a disguise to keep people from assuming you're a couple if you're going to pretend to be a couple anyway? The kind of couple that's more likely to provoke a backlash.

Chapter Seventy
Chapter Seventy

When Saito woke up, he felt as if somebody had torn every single muscle of his body. His skin was red, and for a brief second he remembered the blood, which made him yelp and jump back, the flashback ripping through the fog of his sleep.

He took a deep breath when he realized he wasn't really sticky with blood anymore, and had apparently been scrubbed so clean -even behind his ears- that his skin had turned naturally red from the friction. He sighed and slumped his back against the wall he had ended up against, his muscles taking that as the cue to make their agony known to him.

Louise was nowhere to be found, but the clothes he wore were one of the other pairs he had in his backpack, so this meant that the girl had to have undressed him -and then dressed him right back up.

Or maybe she had asked Marteau? Yeah, that was probably what had happened.

The thought of having been cleaned by Marteau of all people made him shudder. It wasn't uncommon for people in public baths-but really! He would have much preferred that beautiful blond angel to wash him!

"Sir Saito! I'm happy you're awake!" Jeanette said cheerfully as he stepped out of the room, his muscles hurting, but his stomach grumbling for food demanding to be satisfied. The light purple-haired girl's eyes were sparkling in their green mirth as she stood up from a small wooden stool, a bowl in her hands. "Please step back inside," she added, "You need your rest more than any of us!" as she used one hand to gingerly push him back inside, Saito found himself not really willing to go against the girl's meager strength.

"Where's Louis?" Saito asked as he sat down on the side of the bed, wincing from the pain in his muscles.

"Oh, he woke up yesterday and has been a great help with the children," Jeanette said, holding the spoon with the broth up, much to Saito's puzzled face. "Open wide," she said with a light giggle, and as Saito did so, he was spoon fed a bite.

"It's delicious," he said as he allowed the warm broth down his throat. The girl smiled kindly at that.

"I'm glad you like it! I'll tell Tiffania about it then," she added. "She wanted to thank you for what you did! Even I-I admit I was waiting outside to thank you too," Jeanette said with fluttering eyelids. "It's the first time I meet a knight face to face, and-" she offered another spoonful of broth to Saito, "I just-I mean-I'm so embarrassed, not making any sense," she blushed, shaking her head and sitting down right next to Saito, her hair brushing up against cheek as she was quite close.

"I-" Saito swallowed heavily, "I don't swing that way-" he said, and those words came out quite pained.

"Oh-I know, that's why I feel like I can talk with you about everything!" Jeanette said cheerfully. "Just because I'm a bit more developed than Josette, some men try to hit on me. I usually hit them back," as she said that, she grinned, "but as a knight, you must have been knighted by someone, right?"

Another spoonful was fed, and as Saito swallowed it, he nodded carefully. "Well, yes-as a Knight of the North Parterre, I was knighted by Lady Charlotte-I think she's the Queen of Gallia now?"

"The Queen herself! Oh my! Then you aren't just any knight! You're a royal knight!" Jeanette's eyes widened. "That's why you and Mister Louis are so strong! You must be really something else-Square class! Mister Louis is a Square class, is he not?!"

Saito nervously chuckled, "I don't know about that. I'm just good with weapons-"

"You don't have to be so humble, Sir Saito!" Jeanette said, feeding him once more. "To be knighted even as a commoner-and to be a royal knight, charged with upholding the Queen's personal safety and laws-you must be the best there is! A legendary swordsman, a hero!"

Saito shook his head, even as another spoonful ended up in his mouth. "I'm honored you...you think this highly of me," Saito said, "But I didn't do anything special-I just helped a bit."

Jeanette shook her head, preparing another spoonful. "I'm sorry-you must think I'm trying to butter you up," she said with a small awkward smile, "But-to someone like me who's always been in an abbey, I-I was really scared about what happened. If you hadn't been there to keep us calm, you and Sir Louis, maybe we would have-Josette, Jacques and I-maybe we wouldn't have been so brave."

She sniffled a bit, and as she began to twirl the spoon in the broth that remained, Saito moved a hand to grab the bowl. "I think-I think that the ones being awesome are you three," he said in the end, pulling the bowl free from Jeanette's hands. "I mean-what you three did, going into a country that was at war just to make your Abbess happy, to make someone else happy-that's something beautiful. It shows you're kind, grateful kids to the people who raised you."

As he finished swallowing the broth, Saito smiled. "And I think that's the most important thing. You should always pay back the people who helped you when you were in need, especially if they are the ones in need now."

Jeanette smiled warmly, her smile something quite blinding -and extremely cute, if Saito could say so himself. She nodded happily, grabbing the empty bowl and skipping a step as she stood up, "Yes! I've been praised by Sir Saito! This-I'm going to tell this to Josette and Jacques, they'll both be so happy a real knight praised them! Thank you, Sir Saito!" she rushed to the door, and spun around just in time to make a proper curtsy, "I'll come by for dinner if you can't stand up by then, Sir Saito!" and with that, she rushed out giddily giggling like a schoolgirl in love.

Louise came in five seconds later, her arms crossed.

Her expression was a thunderstorm, and as she closed the door with her boot, letting it thunder to a close, Saito's smile remained frozen on his face from sheer fear.

"Saito," Louise hissed in the air, "What part of secret mission didn't you understand?"

Saito laughed weakly, scratching the back of his head. "I-Louis, I can explain."

Louise took a step forward, and then another, clenching her fists as she came to a halt right in front of him. Her hair rose, a pale white aura surrounding it from sheer fury. Saito's breath froze in his throat as Louise raised both of her arms, her fists clenched.

"You can explain," Louise said in a hiss, "You can damn well explain," she snarled.

"I-I destroyed the letters!" Saito exclaimed, both arms in front of him. "They were in the palace-together with a crazy lady-I-I got them, and destroyed them! The-The Crown's safe so the Cardinal will be satisfied, won't he? A-And that will be a good thing for your family, won't it? Like, the Cardinal won't hate on them any more, and-and please don't kill me, I'm too young to die!"

"You...you went into the palace-filled with Undead...just because you were worrying about helping my family?" Louise asked in a whisper.

"That," 'and there was this crazy water woman inside of me, and I think Charlotte is involved,' was probably not something that Louise would have wanted to hear right in that moment. Maybe he'd tell her later, or perhaps he'd speak with Charlotte first. Before unleashing Louise on people, it was best to get the other side of the story, and Charlotte was a good and kind girl, so-so maybe it was just all a big misunderstanding. "Was it," he said in the end.

The barrage of punches never came.

Saito felt only a hug that was stained with tears.

YOu say these things, but it's the same for you when you are having a problem with your car, you don't fix it yourself even if it is something simple no let proffessionals do it, if only for the reason that should somebody mess up they can't say it is your fault

But no what I meant is that Saito compared to them can be said to be incredible smart, I mean sure many of us don't know the exact force the gravity uses on us, but we at least know what gravity is and get the idea behind it even years after we have learned of it and that is exactly what I mean,

Sure Saito isn't the smartest I never contested that but his general knowledge and understanding is much grander than that of anybody else in halk, that makes the difference

Because for people who are ignorant of the idea of gravity, the idea itself might already be considered revolutionary

Louise managed to splutter out an excuse that the definitely abnormal girl

That's discrimination born from feeling inferior louise, that's not soemthing Brimir would approve of, only when you find out they aren't sharing your believes and don't follow the same religion as you are you may discriminate them as it was written in the holy book of the founder

Now excuse me. I feel the need to wake up my partner just so I can beat him unconscious a few times."

And here people I present you the idiot a rare subspecies among mankind who beats up the person that not only saves her life but her future as well

"Because the idiot nearly succeeded in killing himself," Louise replied

Pot calling the kettle black, in fact this whole thing is louise fault, so if somebody should be beaten up it should be her, I mean honestly this whole arc is the result of louise not being able to stand her newly found rich family

"He could have died,"

Pot calling the kettle black

So I am angry. I am angry and I am hurt that he could not wait for me to wake up, and I don't care if he succeeded now, because if tomorrow he does the same and he fails, then I'll be the one left to pick up the pieces of his scattered corpse to sew them back together, and then I'll have to present it to his family saying that he died bravely,"

Pot calling the kettle black

"But you still don't have to hit him," Josette pointed out. "You could talk to him!"

See you old cynical flat-chested bitter not-woman, listen to this girl, because she makes sense and may even teach you a bit about human behavior

"He's the type of guy that if you don't kick him once in a while doesn't learn the lesson,"

How does she know, it's not like she tried, ever

He'll understand it's because I care."

And that is the only reason why we readers haven't thrown you into a shade despair pit™, in order to be never seen again

Louise spluttered, flailing her arms around. "We are two manly men!" she said hotly and 'roughly'. "We are not supposed to marry! And anyway-we are travelling to bring him back home to his family. He was separated from them a long time ago, so-"

Attention Please to all readers, we just crossed the idiocy event horizon, please turn your cellphones off, clip your seat belt on and don't look at Louise as she is a complete retard. Thank you for your attention.

No honestly I'm currently so embarrassed myself with louise behavior that I'm not even going to call her out her hypocrisy and simple vote for her to be thrown over board or to be feed to the nearest dragon, clearly we are doing the world a favor

The barrage of punches never came.

Well I will be damned, apparently louise can learn, even if she still has that anger management problem, but at least she doesn't try to physically maim the people who save her life and her future anymore
and it took only seventy chapters to reach this point of basic common sense
cheers people

That might be fanfiction bleed-over from 'Dog of War' or something similar to it.

That he might know how to pilot a jet and know its name out of the fact he has the Gandalfr runes is one thing. That he actually is a military history buff...

The Wikis all tell me nope. I mean, I know one shouldn't trust the FoZ wiki because they're horribly wrong sometimes, but...(really, if you do have anything that can characterize him more, give it to me! I'll gladly take it!)

Make him an otaku of something lame but that can actually come up. Train otaku would meet the first but not the second, for example.

Thinking on the last few posts, Sheffield lost her runes, so the King of Gallia (Joseph, right?) really is dead. That wasn't a trick.

sigh~~Saito~

The locals do have some concept of atomic and molecules structure though they refer to them as being the grains of substance, they manipulate via will constructs(Their spells) to achive the effect they want. Void magic apparently goes one step further by working with the grains of grains of the substances to achieve its effects.

Also I suspect that the locals are at least aware of gravity and the laws of relativity given they have air ships. Along that lines I was thinking the ability to command airships and the sort of thinking that would be required to wage war and defend against with such things as well as Halk's other flying units is honestly impressive when you really think about it especially given they don't have the equipment including modern computers we use to aid them.(I am sure human computers on the other hand must exist as they did and do in real life).

Especially when you get beyond the ship to ship level and are talking about entire battlefields with fleets of airships and flying units as well as ground forces all going at it.

Yes, I'm sure the Cardinal who dedicated 17+ years to his personal revenge is going to "stop hating" and totally won't demand they do more insanely dangerous tasks for the Crown. Maybe he'll even start paying them at some point.

Oh joy, forced drama llama setup. Seriously what reason does Saito have to believe Louise doesn't want to hear the full explanation now? They're rested and safe, she would like to understand what is going on.

It feels like this arc is undermining the partner bond you built up. It's been heavily over-focused on Saito saves the day zombie action, and now his decision to lie is excluding Louise from the new plotline.

Yes, I'm sure the Cardinal who dedicated 17+ years to his personal revenge is going to "stop hating" and totally won't demand they do more insanely dangerous tasks for the Crown. Maybe he'll even start paying them at some point.

They are paid in exp and scrap as every other reasonable adventurer in the history of rpg

might have something to do with the fact that the louise was 5 seconds away from vaporizing saito for not keeping their 'secret' mission a secret, or it might have something to do with the fact that saito saw somekind of water monster burst out of his body and tear apart a person or it might just be that saito doesn't want to set his permanently over angry partner on attack mode against the cute princess who helped him more then once

take your pick

Not really, in fact it just shows how fragil that bond is due luise inability to trust other people, Saito included

It's been heavily over-focused on Saito saves the day zombie action,

yeah no, that is simple the result of luise never thinking thinks really through, I mean 'let's explore the vastness of my willpower during a zombie apocalypse while the others fight for their life' sure that sounds like a real smart idea

and now his decision to lie is excluding Louise from the new plotline.

Luise is always jumping conclusions and once she reached them she won't move away from them unless it is shown to be the opposite, so does it really surprise you that Saito doesn't want to paint charlotte in a negative light and have crusader luis come out again ?
