She's afraid of him, you think with a start of surprise as you turn to fully face the dimunitive redhead, tongue suddenly dry in your mouth as a pulse of adrenaline accelerates all your bodily processes to hyper-clarity.Five inches taller, two years older, and she's afraid of him. Her own brother.
It's an emotion you can barely countenance; you've been afraid for your boys, but you've never been afraid of them.

What did he do?
Is every other village not named Leaf insane? Like through dirty glass you get a glimpse into some of the pressures that formed the prickly cactus of a girl beside you. And with it, you feel a surge of empathy.I'll never complain about Lee overdoing things again.

Beyond the redhead you see the street mostly clear, a few stragglers hurriedly closing their stalls as the mostly natural wind stirred debris along the length of the street, with eyes mostly peering out from behind half-closed blinds. You really should follow suit, you tell yourself, but your feet don't move.

Any time now.

"Showing a rival from an ally village around the weapon stalls, actually", you find yourself interjecting, your voice smoothly cutting across Temari's half-formed delivery, as you focus your eyes on the tattoo just above his left eye. Don't embarass the village, don't look him in the eye, don't embarass the village. "And reaffirming the bonds of friendship that bind our two villages together" you continue after a brief pause. No matter that you did your very best to damage it.

Your move.

I love this stunt. It makes a lot of sense, echoes an earlier one and is very well written to boot. Kudos, uju32.

Hopefully the dice gods give us their favor.

Edit: Okay, dice, not five. I have no idea how that happened.

Would be better to spend the WP to channel compassion. 3 extra dice should get us more then 1 autosux.
Edit: We are getting so many opportunities to channel compassion that I am thinking we should invest in it.
We regen WP with stunts and by sleeping; even in the absence of anything else, we average 1-2 temporary WP regen each night at Conviction 3.
It's significantly more difficult to regen Virtue channels; we aren't a Crane Style practitioner who can afford to bleed Compassion all over the place.

Talking to Gaara/defending Temari is not so important that we should spend a Compassion channel we don't know how to replace, not with actual critical issues coming up like Lee and Neji or even Kin. It's not like Temari is at risk of death or serious injury here; she's just startled and a little scared because Gaara.

Besides, we are +2 App for the rest of the weak, for a sum total of App 4.
Assuming Gaara is average App 2, that means we are hitting him with a -2 App penalty before rolling Charisma 3 + Stunt 2 + 1 autosux.
And Gaara is not exactly a skilled diplomat, not at this point in the timeline.

Besides? You'll notice that even in his crazy phase, when he would threaten to kill Kankuro, he never actually directly threatened Temari.
In the Forest of Death, she was the one capable of talking him down from going hunting other genin teams after killing the Rain team.
When they fled the stadium, she was the one supporting him.
And when he was beginning to channel Shukaku during the Invasion, he deliberately pushed her out of range.

Dude actually cares about her, though he won't admit it, and might not even realize it.
Which means that when he realizes that we were the one who broke her jaw and put her in a hospital bed, things could get...dicey.
I should probably point out that Gaara only knows of you as "Lee's Teammate." He wasn't there for you beating Temari in person.
When he figures it out, we're going on the List, aren't we?
Because like I pointed out above, he actually gives a shit about her, even though it might not seem like it.

Don't forget the fact she didn't really have childhood friends because people were afraid of her. The closest we see is that one guy who used to bully her because he had a crush on her, or the two girls who show up during the Suna Exam flashbacks and then never show up again.
The normal problems of being effectively royalty in your village, exacerbated by both losing your mother and having a omnicidally crazy younger brother packing a WMD. Yeah, poor girl needs a hug.

Naruto can Befriend guys; Tenten will simply stick to the female population.

That sounds reasonable. How many Compasssion channels have we got left, by the way? I thought we used a one on Kin already, but I can't seem to find it.
Also, I'm not completely comfortable with the chance of Temari being reluctant about speaking to us if we botch this roll and alienate Gaara. Let's hope his two to three dots in Presence (Fear) don't come into play.
We're romancing Temari right? Cockblock the Shikamaru.
Now that I think about it, have we discussed our long term relationship prospects (a.k.a. engaged in shipping wars) yet?
For one, are we actually romancing Temari? I was running under the assumption we were (and totally support the idea), but I'd have thought pairings with Neji or Lee would have more people behind them.
We could also always go for the Harem Route, but who to include in the harem itself? And are we keeping them separate or engineering a big happy love dodecahedron? Decisions, decisions.

Each Virtue has one Channel per dot. So at Compassion 3 we start with three Channels which means if we spent one on Kin we should have two left. Channels are refreshed at the beginning of each Story. For those not aware time in Exalted is broken up as follows:

Tick: Only relevant in combat or similarly tense situations, this is the smallest measurable unit of time in the game, approximately one second long.
Scene: A segment of narrative action and events play out as the protagonists interact with the setting and supporting characters of the game. Theatrically, this is the action that happens "onstage." A scene encompasses the time necessary to play it, which can be a three-minute fight or 10 hours spent mingling at a party.
Episode: An independent section of story, either containing its own subplot or categorized as part of the story covered in a single session of play. Each episode strings together a sequence of scenes, possibly linked by downtime.
Story: A complete narrative arc, usually with a primary goal and the possible inclusion of subplots. Most stories are broken into episodes, largely because they are too long to play in a single session or link a set of plot developments.

At a guess I'd say the entire Chunin Exam Arc would be one story. So we're unlikely to restore our Channels until after the invasion.

You don't need some jutsu to tell you what it is, because you've seen the same thing in Lee sometimes, at the end of practice when he's finally stopped challenging Neji and thinks no one is watching. Desperation.

Desperation to prove herself, or redeem herself, or something. Wipe away the stain of her loss to you. Would you be the same way if you lost? Desperate to prove yourself against the past? If what had happened never did, you were going to. You don't know, you hoped you would move past it, push past it to come out stronger, but you fear that you wouldn't measure up. So you do the only thing you can do for Temari, you give her a smile and a thumbs up. "Don't worry, if I went in planning to lose that'd be pretty poor form. You'll see!"

Is that Gai's influence finally infecting us?

Because like I pointed out above, he actually gives a shit about her, even though it might not seem like it.

Oh yeah, it's enough to earn you a spot right under Lee in your own right. Especially because at this point he's not the best equipped to even understand Tenten's motivation for visiting and striking up a friendship with Temari.
