The Outer Dimension Offensive Reloaded!

"Caution is all well and good, but they don't make for the best tales." Lorena shook her head despite knowing she was alone in this opinion. Really, her companions could use some more panache and elan. This was no way for their band of heroes to act! "According to our lovely lady Rift Diver, our foes number a total of eighteen, possibly more, with two shrouded in mystery save for the fact that they can fly." The mage spoke calmly in response, recalling the information from their briefing as she accompanied the group through the portal.

"We have a total of three humans with their lead-belching contraptions enhanced by our phalanx and while they can surely fell three demons from afar, the rest of us are not so fortunate. Rather than sit and wait for the enemy to reorganize and engage us in melee, I believe the phalanx should close with the foe while surprise from our sudden appearance and gunfire paralyzes them." It was perhaps, unwelcome for a subordinate to question their commanding officer so, but as someone of noble blood, she was well within her right to voice her opinions and concerns even if ultimately, she would accept being overruled. "The more demons lay dead in the opening act of our battle, the safer we will be, the swifter this will be resolved, and the more glorious our after-action report. Besides, a tight knit formation such as the phalanx can be hindered by uneven terrain and the thick tree line, and as such, marching into the clearing would best preserve the coherency of our formation."

Solus lets the chatter wash over himself. He tries to listen, but it becomes increasingly more difficult as the necromancer just keeps. On. Talking.

Once she has finally finished, he just looks at her.

"The plan, lady mage, is to scout the area, prepare our attack, and march at the enemy with all due speed. Lady War Forger's disposable troops will form the vanguard, our human allies support us from the back. Any questions?"

Akira Thompson

As the others started to move through the portal, the Practitioner would follow suit, following behind Solus and the others as she stepped through the portal....

Unlike the first trip through one of Rift Diver's portals, this journey is instantaneous, the group stepping out of the basecamp and into the woods in a single stride. Rift Diver waves the group off as her portal closes, and then the team is alone. Thankfully for anyone that isn't able to work out where exactly they are and where exactly they're going however, Gladys can spot a a pillar of red light relatively close by.

"I believe the War Forger has marked the enemy's location; There is a pillar of red light visible not too far from here." Gladys gestures towards the pillar, before turning to the others. "Is anyone else able to see it?"

"Is anyone else able to see it?"
"I can not", Solus supplies as he squints in the indicated direction. He holds his blades at rest with no enemy contact, but motions with his dagger, Ash. "Take the lead, we shall follow. Everyone else, in formation. Three lines, human soldiers and Lux in the back."

So saying, Solus takes his place in the second line, ready to back up Graum in a heartbeat.

Diane stretches up and shifts from side to side in an attempt to spot a bit of light. She shrugs as she sets herself back on her heels.

"I don't see it."

With Gladys leading, the group advances through the woods. An hour and a half passes in relative quiet as Team FORGE marches toward the demon encampment, before coming to a stop as the sound and smell of the demons hits them.

Just as Rift Diver stated, the demons are gathered in a clearing next to the river with most of the force visible from the team's vantage point.

Four Hellhounds appear to be resting against a tree, while two others patrol with the Alpha. Two Infernals stand idly in the clearing, while the third seems to be amusing itself by throwing fireballs into the river. Two husks appear to be finishing eating an animal of some kind, while a Footsoldier looks on. The remaining two Husks, Footsoldier, and pair of fliers are not in view.

Thirteen demons. Five less than the intel gave. That... could be problematic. Achilles motions to the others that he is going to move to another position. Achilles moves low towards the location he keeps hearing noise from, across the shrubbery to stay out of sight. He keeps a hand on his rifle, just in case.

Roughly fifty yards east, he sees them. Two husks tearing in the corpse of a deer-like animal, while the second footsoldier stands next to a flying demon, idly gazing towards the river. Achilles notices movement above, and ducks behind a tree to avoid the notice of a second winged demon circling in the air. Making sure there aren't any extras Rift Diver didn't see, Achilles moves back to the group, timing his departure to the movement of the airborne demon.

Once back to the group, Achilles relays the second to the others. "The other demons are fifty yards east in another clearing. Two Husks, a footsoldier, and two green insect-like fliers with beaks. They may come over here if they hear fighting, or they might try to sound the alarm. Could be either".

The march itself is not so much taxing as it is boring, but Solus prefers that. Boring is good, much better than any form of exciting. But of course, problems have to rear their head.

Solus listens to the report, his expression blank beyond a minute frown. Of course the most bothersome opponents are not in a place where they can get at them quickly.

He mulls over the possibilities and options for a moment. They could split up, or attempt to bait the UD into a reckless charge. But both of these options bear risks he does not like. They are not mobile enough to hit both groups like this.

Suppressing a sigh, Solus taps Gladys. "Graum, you take charge of this group. I will split off with Lux and her summons to strike the splinter force. We will hold their attention if nothing else, so that our guns can wipe them out when you are done with the main group."

His orders given, he turns to Lorena next, expression serious. "But for that, I need you to stay in formation. We can not afford losing cohesion. Am I understood?"

Gladys looks to Solus at his tap, before looking back to the demons ahead. "Understood Legatus. Militia, fill out the front two lines aside and behind me, then one in the third line." She eyes the demons ahead of them as the others move into position. "Achilles, Diane, Akira, could you fill our third line around and aside the last Militia? I'm thinking the Husks and Alpha should be priority targets here."

Phalanx Base Damage: 300 (Gladys) + 10*10 (Militia's Mob) + 10*10/2 (Militia Esprit De Corps) + (350 + 350 + 250)/2 (Human Esprit De Corps) = 925 Base Damage
Phalanx Base Resilience: 100 (Gladys) + 10*10 (Militia's Mob) + 4*10/2 (Front Row Militia Esprit De Corps) = 220 Base Resilience
Esprit De Corps: All members of the Phalanx are immune to fear.

His orders given, he turns to Lorena next, expression serious. "But for that, I need you to stay in formation. We can not afford losing cohesion. Am I understood?"
"Come now Legatus," Lorena answered in a faux-whispered voice, an attempt at keeping her volume low lest they be discovered. "When have I ever acted to the detriment of our troop?" Immediately, her skeletons turned to stand beside her, expressions empty and unreadable to contrast the obviously sly grin on Lorena's face as she used both hands to adjust the wide-brimmed hat atop her head, eternally seeking the perfect angle. "Rest assured that I and my Wardens won't leave your side until our foes are crushed beneath our boots."

"When have I ever acted to the detriment of our troop?"
Solus is very, very tempted to remind her of the moment just a few hours ago when Lux almost got herself killed. He somehow manages to communicate none of this thought beyond a single twitch of his brow.
"Rest assured that I and my Wardens won't leave your side until our foes are crushed beneath our boots."
"I will hold you to that," he whispers back. There is no time for doubt in the field, he can only trust that she will not stray again. Even still, he knows he has to be ready for anything; and the current of heat in his core answers that thought, growing stronger.

Expelling steam through his nose, Solus nods to Lux. "On me," he orders, then bids Graum good luck with a nod. "Move swift and quiet."

Then he begins leading the way, careful to make as little noise as possible in the underbrush. If all goes well, their smaller group will stay unnoticed until they reach the other splinter force.

As Solus lead Lorena and her minions away from the rest of the group, the mage made sure to turn around and give her other companions some encouragement. This was a poor place for a speech, but a hand sign felt very appropriate! To this end, Lorena raised both hands towards her companions, wide smile on her face as her index and middle fingers formed a double 'V' sign, years of noble etiquette ensuring she kept her palms facing inward just like her scroll on human customs taught her!

By the time they reunited, only peace and victory awaited them! At least, that was what the gesture represented in her scroll. Truthfully, it had been quite an expensive purchase and the fact that it was finally paying off was enough to make any girl giddy!

Alas, any sense of elation she felt quickly disappeared as a problem soon became apparent. Lorena herself didn't have much trouble keeping quiet as she followed after her superior, the rustle of cloth easily mistaken for the noise made by foliage, but the same could not be said of the clanking and rattling of her Wardens. Their armor was clearly made for individuals who had a bit more meat to them, and every little movement seemed to cause a clash between their bones and the chain links of their armor. Not only that, but the normally unflappable elf couldn't help but widen her eyes as she saw what exactly they were up against.

"Latchwings?" Bewilderment was clear in her voice as she spoke to Solus, a sense of urgency to her words that until now, sounded foreign to Lorena's lips. "The creatures should have long gone extinct thanks to demons. What in the world are they-" Her mind felt like it was running a mile a minute, memories of casually reading novelized versions of a certain military formation's exploits and tragic end rushing to the forefront of her mind. "We must watch our backs legate. Those creatures are known to devour prey by burrowing inside-"

A possibility suddenly came to mind, and Lorena felt a pit form inside her stomach, one that was quickly lit aflame as the implications hit her. "-but I fear their true purpose may be worse. Some latchwings are known to be symbiotic, able to grant flight to their host after linking their nervous systems together. Once they've taken to the skies, our blades will have difficulty keeping them here."

Though her explanation was calm, the grimace on her face could not be hidden. How dare these fiends besmirch the legacy of heroes such as the Sky Rangers?! These mockeries of the Empire's valiant dead had to be destroyed, no matter the cost!

It seems bringing a studied woman paid off already. Solus nods along to Lux's hushed explanation, mind awhirl with possibilities. Unfortunately, they are short on options.

"Then we have to hope that they choose to battle with us instead of fleeing," he answers grimly, then smirks. "And that they fail to realise we brought humans. Ready yourself, on my mark."

After giving the summoner a moment to prepare, Solus draws his blades and hunches forward. The Demons are alert, but do not look their way exactly. In a moment, they will.

"Volcano's Embrace", Solus hisses, and lets the flame overflow from his core. It flows from his every pore, coating his skin and swords in a blazing layer.

(Volcano's Embrace: 200 Base Boost, +4 dice = 204 Total Boost applied to Solus)

It is a clear enough signal, and so he charges without another word. Just slow enough for the skeletons and Lux to keep up; the advantage of a small group is mobility, and he knows this. So he moves straight at the Latchwings to cut them down. The Husks are his secondary target if rest dies or flies out of reach.

Initiative Roll: 6
Composition:
Skeleton
Solus
Skeleton
Lorena
Stats:
-Base Damage: 50 + 250 + 50 + 500 = 850
(Solus gets +204 Volcano's Embrace)
-Base Resilience: 50 + 185 + 50 = 285

Misc. Effects:
-A Blade Forged From Scraps: At 4 members, this Phalanx can not break involuntarily

Achilles nods as he takes aim. "Agreed. My rifle is ready when you are Ma'am." He unclasps the holster for his sidearm, just in case he needs another shot.

The Phalanx (Achilles: Rifle): 1225 Base Damage, no dice, +245 Full Auto, +245 Full Auto, +245 Full Auto, +245 Full Auto, +245 Full Auto, +??? Surprise Round, +294 Holy = 2,744 + ??? Total Damage

Pistol carries Armor Pierce.

Lorena and her wardens followed after Solus, the steps of her skeletons fully in-sync with the legate's as magic gathered around the girl's fingertips. Her lips mouthed familiar words in complete silence, steps steady and without flourish as the last syllables were uttered. Instead of a disembodied whistle, however, there was simply silence. The new pair of Wardens did not rise from the ground, rather, particles of mana coalesced together, forming the armored skeletons from head to toe, swords glinting with a menacing glare as they joined their brethren's forward march.

With a mental command, the Wardens charged. One moved with Solus, blade lashing out to skewer the Foot Soldier next to a Latchwing, as two others descended upon the Husks, fully intent on making the demons join the corpse they had been feasting on. Lastly, Lorena eyed the Latchwing in the skies, and her last Warden raised its sword and shield besides her, ready to intercept any attack that may come her way.

Diane took position without a word.

She held her carbine close, waiting with anxious energy for the formation to choose a target.

"Sure thing" the practitioner said, quickly moving into her position.

As she did so, she kept her gun at the ready. Alongside that, a melody in the back of her throat was being formed for when it would be needed....

Gladys draws her sword, hefts her shield, and gives a final nod in response to the humans affirmation. "Very well. Shoot for the Husks, then the Hellhounds. We advance!"
Allied ApT: 1 (Gladys) + 10 (Militia) + 1 (Achilles) + 1 (Akira) + 1 (Diane) = 14
Enemy ApT: 6*2 (6 Hellhounds) + 4 (Hellhound Alpha) + 3 (3 Infernals) + 2*4 (2 Husks) + 1 (Hell's Foot Soldier) = 28
Redoubled Effort procs! Base Damage, Base Resilience, and Health accounted for in the Phalanx spoiler. MM 135-> 270, ApT 1 -> 2

Line 2: Militia, Militia, Militia, Militia, Militia
Line 3: Humans x3, Militia in one of the center positions

Phalanx Base Resilience: 100 (Gladys) + 100 (Redoubled Effort) + 10*10 (Militia's Mob) + 4*10/2 (Front Row Militia Esprit De Corps) = 320 Base Resilience
Esprit De Corps: All members of the Phalanx are immune to fear.
The forward march of the Phalanx easily brings the Phalanx into melee range of the patrol from out of the treeline, blades and clubs of the Phalanx swinging to strike at Hellhounds and Alpha before the alarm can be raised. Breaking the treeline offers the humans in the rear line their oppurtunity to fire, as the melee combatants continue to strike at foes within reach.

Combat 2 start
As the two groups begin the attack, the demons are stunned for a moment. Unfortunately, same cannot be said for the Latchwings.

Ambush partially successful, round 1 turn order altered!

??? Latchwing ability revealed:
__Laying in Wait__: Unless caught in a surprise attack, ??? Latchwings may act as though they have initiative 1 on the first round of combat.

??? Latchwing A: 350(Base damage) + 41(MM) - 390(Not trying to kill) = 1 total damage
Hell's Footsoldier: 50(Base res) + 7(MM) - 57(Not Resisting) = 0 resilience

__Latch on__ activates! Symbiotic Latchwing and Hell's Footsoldier meld stats!

Symbiotic Latchwing B: 350(Base Damage) + 50(MM) = 400 total damage!

Grave Warden B blocks

The first Latchwing attaches itself to the back of the Footsoldier, while the second bolts out of the tree towards Lorena. At the last moment, one of her Grave Wardens moves between Lorena and the creature, leaving it scratching uselessly at the skeleton's shield.

Solus and the Warden next to him shift their angle slightly and charge at the melded Latchwing and Footsoldier.
Ember: 850(Phalanx attack)+ 43(MM) + 204(Volcano's Embrace) = 1,097
Ash: 850(Phalanx attack)+ 23(MM) + 204(Volcano's Embrace) = 1,077
Grave Warden B: 850(Phalanx attack)
1097 + 1077 + 850 = 3,024 total damage!

Hell's Footsoldier(Latched): 175(Base res) + 59(MM) = 234
3,024 - 234 = 2,790 end damage!
875 - 2,790 = -1,915 Hell's Footsoldier(Latched) is slain!

Although the melding leaves the Footsoldier tougher than others of it's kind, it's not enough to save the demon from Solas' blades. In seconds, both monsters are dead on the ground. All that's left are the Husks.

Grave Warden C: 50(Base damage)
Husk A: 25(Base res) + 11(MM) = 36
50 - 36 = 14 end damage
100 -14 = 86 health remaing!

Grave Warden D: 50(Base damage)
Husk B: 25(Base res) + 4(MM) = 29
50 - 29 = 21 end damage
100 - 29 = 71 health remaining

The two skeletons swing at the husks, drawing blood but not killing either demon. A fact that will cost them dearly.

Husk A: 125 (Base Damage) + 3(MM) = 128 total damge
Husk A: 125 (Base Damage) + 18(MM) = 143 total damage
Husk A: 125 (Base Damage) + 16(MM) = 141 total damage
Husk A: 125 (Base Damage) + 9(MM) = 134 total damage

I'm not gonna waste time on the math for this one, Grave Wardens C and D are dead. Again.

Husk B: 125 (Base Damage) + 12(MM) = 127 total damage
Husk B: 125 (Base Damage) + 8(MM) = 133 total damage
Husk B: 125 (Base Damage) + 2(MM) = 127 total damage
Husk B: 125 (Base Damage) + 2(MM) = 127 total damage

Phalanx: 285(Base res) - 25% = 213
Phalanx: 285(Base res) - 25% = 213
Phalanx: 285(Base res) - 25% = 213
Phalanx: 285(Base res) - 25% = 213

I'm also not gonna waste time on the math for this one, the Husk cannot hurt the Phalanx.

The first Husk swipes at the two Wardens, in seconds reducing them to a pile of shattered bones and torn metal before the remains dissipate. While the second charges at the group. Although it's claws are as fast as they are sharp, they find no purchase against the small wall of metal that is the Phalanx.

Fight 1 Initiative:
1: Husk A
2:
3:
4:
5:
6: Solas, Lorena, Grave Warden A, Grave Warden B,
7: Symbiotic Latchwing B
8:
9: Husk B
10:

Back at the clearing, the rest of Team FORGE and their golem auxiliaries charge the demons.

Successful ambush, Surprise turn gained!

The Phalanx (Gladys): 1225 Base Damage + 56 dice = 1281
The Phalanx (Gladys): 1225 Base Damage + 100 dice = 1325
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 239 dice = 1464
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 4 dice = 1229
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 47 dice = 1272
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 74 dice = 1299
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 190 dice = 1415
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 179 dice = 1404
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 183 dice = 1408
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 228 dice = 1453
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 61 dice = 1286
The Phalanx (Militia): 1225 Base Damage + 99 dice = 1324

It's not possible for any of the demons to roll well enough to survive. Flawless Victory.

It is nothing less than a slaughter. The Infernals die first, gunned down by the human troopers before they can so much as light a fireball. The Hellhound Alpha falls to Achilles pistol, leaving the other hounds frozen while one of their own begins to mutate. The remaining hounds are beaten and trampled in the frantic dash to the Husks and Footsoldier. So focused on their food, the Husks don't notice anything is wrong until Glady's blade emerges from one's maw while the other is shoved to the ground and clubbed until it's head is nothing but fine paste.

The last demon to fall is the Footsoldier, but fall it does as the mob of Militia constructs attack the demon. A strike to each knee brings it's head into arms reach, and those Militia not focused on the Husk ensure it will never rise again as a series of club swings cave in the demon's skull.

The fighting ends as fast as it began, and the clearing is silent but for the occasional wet thud as constructs swing at twitching corpses.
