Well, you can hardly count on your enemies being idiots.

We had set up on a nice hill that would have given perfect lines of fire in all directions. That's when the raven scouts reported Mary's army stopped it's advance about half a day of marching away.

Neither Robb or I...or any of his Lords knew exactly what they were up to. Our best guess was that that they didn't know what we had or why we picked this position, but they didn't want us to pick the site of battle.

Despite out airborne scouts, we didn't know what THEY had planned either. You can only see so much from high up, even with the simple optics I manufactured with my omni-tool. Best they were able to see, It was a regular army. I ordered the guns kept under cover at all times just in case somebody in the enemy camp have a brain...which they should...and have the Angels to fly and check us out.

The guards were told to keep a eye on the skies, but they didn't see anything...which meant exactly dick. A human body at a thousand meter into the skies isn't exactly easy to spot.

The armies spent a day or two just sitting in our respective spots and waited to see who would blink first.

We did.

"Well, we could hardly sit on that hill until winter." Robb commented as we rode with the army towards the field of battle.

It was thankfully a actual field, if less perfect than where we were.

I shrugged "True. Even with ravens bringing in supplies, it would have cut off our supply lines easier than we would have been able to harass theirs."

He nodded as we rode onto a small hill, only a couple of meters of elevation, but would give us a bit of overview as the army marched around it, moving into position. Musketeers, Pikemen and cavalry.

Just because we are basically immune to cavalry, didn't mean they were.

I glanced back "Holding up ok?" I asked the Slayers riding behind us. The closest girl, a tiny redhead...seriously, she was like a foot shorter than Buffy slid of her horse "I hate these things." and rubbed her rear.

The rest laughed and followed her example, dismounting as I shook my head "Better get used to it, Karla. I have yet to find a way to bring anyone else between Planes. Unless you invent the internal combustion engine..."

"Railway at least." A brunette, the latest of the girls said as she stretched.

"If you can find that much iron, Hannah; go for it." I told her and turned back forward, just able to see the enemy army arriving at the other end of the field.

Honestly, this kind of warfare is so odd for somebody from the 'Modern world'. Armies lining up and then basically running at each other screaming instead of tanks, air support and special forces raids.

But even muskets where not very good for that kind of warfare...and this was going to be them bringing a sword to a gunfight.

I raised my cheap optics and took a good look. The distance was long and the optics bad, but I could just make out somebody in white riding across the front of the forces, likely giving some kind of inspiring speech about 'Demons' or something like it if I knew her right.

I handed the optics over to Robb to let him have a look as I dismounted and walked over to the stretching and warming up Slayers.

"Are you ready for this?" I asked them as they where getting ready.

Darla stood up straight and nodded, adjusting her chainmail. Like normal, Slayers prioritized speed over armor with their inherent resistance to blunt force trauma and ability to heal...but that didn't mean they were stupid.

They were strong enough that chainmail didn't slow them down and it did really help against slashing weapons, so they wore it.

"We are ready. I don't like the idea of killing humans any more than you do...but like you said before, it is a matter of survival. They want us dead so we just have to kill them right back."

I nodded "But remember this, you are not here to fight humans, leave that for the humans. You are here to counter Mary's tricks." as I started to channel my green mana, conjuring weapons according to their preferences. All of them of Asgardian alloys; infinitely superior to anything else on the field of battle.

They each got to pick what they felt the most comfortable with...from a pair of daggers to a spear. Each of them also had a pistol version of the musket. Basically a smaller mechanism with a pistol handle and a very short barrel.

One shot and drop, but it should help.

Honestly, using Giant Growth on them would have been a better use of the mana, but they absolutely nixed that idea.

Their clothes would not have grown with them...so it was kind of understandable they were hesitant.

It was not worth pushing for it.

When the last one was armed I returned to my mount next to The King and he glanced at me "Are you sure about this? They outnumber us..."

I climbed back into my saddle and nodded as the Slayers lined up in front of us, facing the battle.

"As sure as I can be. If they use the same tactic as Tywin described, it should work."

As a horn sounded on the other end of the field their cavalry started out towards the flanks, trying to get around ours in a classic maneuver. Robb slowly nodded and signaled the man riding next to him.

Our own cavalry moved to meet them as I sighed.

Mary's infantry started marching and I sighed as something came to mind.

"Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred. "

Robb looked at me and I shook my head "Just a piece of a poem from my world. Seemed...fitting." I turned to the man doing the signaling with his horn.

I was the one that brought them here. I should give the order. My responsibility.

"Signal the men. Fire by ranks."

It was time for the dying to start.

I actually like it much better than sapience / sentience since both have been mangled beyond belief by Sci-Fi over the years (Damn you Gene!). Sophont makes a lot more sense since it means without a doubt a thinking feeling being, and it's a lot less clunky then 'intelligence' which is very woolly.
Which is exactly why I have started to use it instead. There is no confusion or arguing which is important and which is which.

I can't wait to see what kind of devilry Mary has cooked up for this. (Pun intended)

I don't think i will be able to put the next part up today, going to be to busy to write.

It should be up tomorrow though. Sorry about that.

The first volley thundered across the field. At that range there were lots of misses...but the first rank of Mary's army still reacted like somebody took a scythe to it.

Five seconds later the next rank switched places with the first and they fired again.
The entire charge just stopped.

At the back of the hostile force there were a bright shining light and the enemy gathered themselves back up and continued their charge.

At first I thought it was some kind of control spell...and it might have been, but then the third volley hammered into the front line and only a few men fell.

The fourth volley cut deep and a thousand men fell.
She used some kind of shield, but she clearly underestimated the pure power behind two thousand musket balls...that it lasted a entire volley by itself was impressive. She could not have that much left after doing a shield like that.
They were now close enough for the screaming to be heard clearly.

As shapes rose into the air at the back of the army, armor and weapons shining bright in the sun as white wings spread, I slowly nodded.
"Ready, Girls?" I asked and looked down at them.
There was some hesitation but they all answered with nods or in other ways to the affirmative.

I took a slow breath and closed my eyes as the sixth volley thundered and pulled at my Blue mana and my remaining Red land.

I had only just finished this spell half a week ago. My first real enchantment that was not just 'pump green into the target with the intent for strength and size.'

Red for the shape matrix, Blue for control and stability. Red for power and fire.
The mana swirled around my arms as I open my eyes, my eyes blazing of blue fire as I spread my arms. I could hear Stark gasp and his horse almost panic, mine keeping under control as it was a summon.
The red and blue fire fade away slowly and I smiled.
It worked.

When I payed attention to the Angels again they were halfway across the field and had already started their dive towards my forces.
I nodded slowly "Girls...go kick some arse."

As one the Slayers sprouted wings of fire, the inner parts glowing of blue and cooling to red towards the edges. They slowly flapped their wings, rising into the air before accelerating towards the angels to meet them in their own element.

Part of the spell was instinctive control...not only over the flying and wings, but also over the fire they are made off. They only burn what the enchanted creature wants them to.
The blazing fire of their wings stood out against the sky as they crashed into the group of angels. They were outnumbered two to one.
It was not even remotely fair.

She should have summoned more angels.

As the eight volley thundered across the field, heavy lead smashing into meat, ending lives and killing men the battle rages in the skies, Wings of White and Wings of Fire dove, crashed and burned.
Bodies fell. First one, then two, then ten.
In the end there were seven beings still flying, all with wings of fire.

I sighed and clenched my hand at my side as I felt my Red, White, Blue and Red start to recharge slowly. I lost three slayers...if they were only hurt I would have been able to heal them and I would not have started to recharge.
Damn.
At the sight of my own Angels Mary's magics was not enough to keep her army from breaking.
As the ninth volley smashed into their ranks they broke and ran for their lives.

I channeled my Blue and Red again, spreading my own wings of fire as I sent a mental command to the Slayers to find Mary.

I looked over at Robb and then nodded as I dismissed my horse, slowly beating my wings to stay in the air "I'm going to end this." I told him before I took to the air, following my Slayers as they started to search for a woman in white.

We found her and four knights escaping by horseback a couple of kilometers from the battle. She must be out of mana as she was not flying.

The slayers dove down, wings burning men to ash as I landed in Marys path as she spurred on her horse, pulling my Carnifex.
She didn't move to turn so I shot it.

Honestly, it looked like a good horse and it didn't deserve that, but I needed to stop this. Now.
I could not allow this to happen again...there had already been too much dying.

The large animal hit the ground hard as the supersonic metal sliver pierced its heart, it's rider being thrown off, rolling on the forest path, her white robes turning into a mess.

I took aim at her as she struggled back onto her feet, The Slayers keeping back, circling in the skies and keeping guard.

"Hello, Mary." I said as I stared at her. Her robes had ripped and her hair was a mess. She had a wound at her right arm that quickly stopped bleeding.

She panted and watched me with wide eyes "Winter...you did this...you killed all those men...what foul magic...Why...why are you doing this?"

I shook my head "I did not kill them. You did...you are the one that forced this, Mary. I wanted none of it."
"I'm trying to save these people!" she yelled as she stood up straight "My world used to be like this! Then the demons came! Evil attracts them! Please..." she said as she started to grow a bit quieter "Please...you can still stop. You can redeem yourself. Reject the foul magics...reject your demon masters. You can join the side of the Light...You can still join me. Please...stop this."

At the end of her small speech she was almost pleading with me to join her. She simply could not see that she might be the one at fault.

I looked at her. She was unarmed and dirty. She was most likely almost completely drained of mana.
She was harmless...for now.

For now.

So many deaths for nothing.

I pulled the trigger.

AN// Big thanks to bookmonkey786 for betaing this part. As i said before, this is the end of this fic. It felt like a natural point to end the story as it is the end of a major story arc. I might return to this continuity sometime in the future though so there might be a sequel at some point.

If somebody are curious, the enchantment was essencially this this http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=179591&type=card

While it does indeed feel like a natural end of this 'book' with Winter learning who he is, about his power, and facing his first real test, there remains a lot to be told *hint* *hint* :)

Awesome story mate. What's next on the chopping block?
I'm thinking HP, but I am going through the magic system first to give it a bit more rules that make sense. No orbital drop space marine elfs in power armor this time...

So does Robb Stark become King of the Seven Kingdoms? He's got the superior weapons, the reputation for defeating an undefeatable army (okay, so it was Winter who did the most, but who'll believe that?) and most of all, he's still alive. Given a little time and luck, he can reunite Westross, and make sure Blondie can't pull it out from under him. Can dragons stand up to 12 pounder cannon? Lets find out ... :)
Side with the guys with swords, or the man who (Can be interpenetrated as Chosen) to the closest to an GOD who literally soared in the skies with his progeny on wings of fire?
Not much of an choice.

And an good read Hiver, Looking forward to seeing him again when your muse tells you to return to Winter.

I like the plan. I suggest scrapping or at least heavily tweaking/defining the limits of even some cannon things along the way, such as time-turners
What's wrong with time-turners? I have no idea how you could possibly limit them more than canon does, unless you've misunderstood canon.

If you need a way to limit magic don't do the magical core thing; instead think magical bandwidth. As a wizard/witch can keep a Lumos cast for as long as he/she wants, but while casting the Lumos they have less magic to channel into other spells.

So say if you animate a tree, turn the floor into Ice and keep conjuring needles as projectiles that can be your limit and you can't cast say a stunner at the same time. While Dumbledore and Riddle can go into epic levels of casting as they have really, really, good bandwidth.

So that's why people stun people instead of body binding them, as the stunner makes the target unconscious and stops needing any more magic, while a body bind has to be kept maintained for as long as it is cast. So you have less power to cast, also permanent enchantment requires tapping ambient magic as non permanent enchantment taps into your bandwidth and uses it for power.

Now did that make sense outside my head or not?

It do make sense and I already had something very similar planned.

Spacebattler Hivemind Strikes Again! ... and now I'm imagining a newspaper/magazine made specifically for spacebattlers with that as it's main headline. The places my imagination goes at times, oh the places.

Also, permanent enchantments should use ambient magic, which is slowly leaked into the environment by living things. (Magical beings naturally generating a lot more).
That way, you can have bludgers, but not ortillery bludgers since there's no ambient magic in space and they'd just shut down after half an hour or so.
You can still fly your broom into space though (with bubble-head + protego?).
Well I actually prefer to think Ambient magic is a background field, but you can only tap it so much and put so much magic into an enchantment. So you can make a bludger move at maximum a few hundred miles an hour but no faster, and levitation charms use gravity as to repulse against. The stronger the gravitational field the stronger the force so in space in micro gravity the levitation spell would be very, very, small.

If Winter let Mary go could he reliably imprison her? Because if she gets away this whole thing and all the deaths that entails happens again. And again. And again.
Indeed, you don't see the Doctor doing the "I never would" speech to a Dalek do you? You don't let a man eater live because it's a living breathing creature, you kill it so it's taste for human flesh isn't sated by a toddler, she is far too dangerous to be kept alive. And that is that.

Ok, i want your opinion on something. I have two options for you:

Parts posted less often* and have them be longer or keep going as i am doing now.

*less often here is every other day or so instead of every day.
