The Journey Never Ends (Original Fantasy Quest)

Volume 1: Epilogue Finale
[X] Record your visit to the Sun Elf Memorial
Slight warning to sensitive subjects surrounding mental health on second half of update

"...Hello, everyone. The live stream is now beginning. Today, we shall be visiting the Sun Elf Memorial here in the deserts of Sumeri."

As the words leave your mouth, you can't quite help feeling a little foolish. This isn't the first time you've done something like this, but you can never get used to just speaking to a device as if you're talking to an entire crowd. Intellectually, you understand that there may be hundreds or thousands of people listening from their own devices, but it's still difficult to wrap your head around it.

If Clara hadn't eagerly set up everything for you, you wouldn't have bothered. As it stands currently though, you are now holding a stick with various devices and contraptions tied to it. A backpack connects to various points to it all and to the things elsewhere on your body, and you've long ago stopped attempting to understand it all. You instead focused intently on following Clara's every instruction to the letter on how to get everything to work, and so far it seems to be going well.

Looking away from the "chat" as you prepare to dismount, you take the chance to get rid of any traces of uncertainty. You've already committed to this, and the people managing the memorial have eagerly accepted your visit and recording. Dry, hot wind beats against the clothing you decided to wear on this trip, the fabric wrapping across most of your body aside from your eyes and hands. The sun stands oppressively above everyone and presses down on those beneath it with its rays, its painful radiance an eternal judge over all in the desert.

Thankfully, it seems that you avoided harsher weather conditions. Stroking the neck of the giant lizard that carried you here, you nod at the guides who traveled with you and watch as they direct themselves someplace else. Considering the village was found in the middle of the desert, finding transportation to get here is somewhat complicated. There are vehicles that may traverse the sands of course, but you've decided to take a more traditional method of getting there.

You continue speaking as you trudge across the sands, "For those wondering about the distinction made on 'sun' elf, I shall do my best to explain. Us elves entered Orbis all throughout the continent with no single place of origin. Different groups of elves developed specialties for where they were born to aid them in forming communities, cooperating with other peoples, and dealing with local threats."

"We each earned various names from the cultures and civilizations at the time, but once elves as a people became widely known, a general consensus was reached to simply apply a descriptor to a language's word for an elf. Wood elf, snow elf, high elf, mer elf, and of course, sun elf, or sand elf as they were sometimes called."

"There have been debates on how different the types of elves are. Some liken them to humans with different colors of skin and hair, lacerta with varying scale colorations, and yuren with their variety of gem features. A mainly aesthetic difference with minor health and medical differences, with most of the contrast between them primarily cultural and societal. Several consider them to be entirely different species with clear biological differences, perhaps similar to the vastly different types of sylvan, or the few tribes of alerion outside Avista that scarcely resemble their distant relations."

"Even with us elves, there is—was no clear consensus," you pause for only a moment at that, hiding any discomfort. "From my perspective and the majority of the elves I conversed with however, I believe the answer lies somewhere in between those two extremes. From what I know, we were not too different biologically from each other despite our appearances varying wildly at times, and there have been a few pairings and couples made between two types of elves. While there were significant differences between us all and divides that separated us, we were constructed by the same creators and endowed with similar purposes and directives.

You stop, managing to school your expression into something neutral before looking directly at the camera.

"Dark elves are commonly misunderstood by modern academics, and indeed, by the ancients as well," you say. "They lived in caves and underground areas, and due to their reclusive nature and more distinctive appearance, were the source of many unfounded fears, rumors, and suspicions. Other elves did not combat them, though it was not uncommon for other peoples to come into conflict with dark elves due to superstitious paranoia before later attributing their massacres and discrimination to us. Still, they fought valiantly against threats and horrors from beneath the surface."

Barely holding back a scoff, you look away, "And for the record, there are many other types of elves I did not mention. I can go in-depth on the elves present in Zhonghua and Sindhu, but that is a topic for another time."

In retrospect, you should've just ignored the random person who commented that. Clara even said that there will always be a few people typing inflammatory statements in the chat and that you should avoid getting "One Guy'd". One of the main reasons you are even doing this is to boost your image and popularity, and getting into an angry tirade like that on an educational stream seems counterintuitive anyways.

But… you can't help but be angry at people looking to criticize elves in particular for every little perceived wrong. Since the day an elf dared show expertise in a craft or skill they've honed, there have always been bitter people seeking to tear them down. When elven society waned, they were mocked and derided by people who have never even met an elf in their life. For every ideal and virtue people associate with elves, so too did they project their worst insecurities and fears onto one of the most "other" race.

You have never denied the various sins the elves as a collective people have committed. What they did alone to the orcs, ogres, and other "monstrous" races in Central Kiengir for millennia is enough to earn condemnation. There was some friction between different groups of elves. But their ill deeds have been a particular target from groups who have committed similar terrible acts wishing to advance a certain agenda. They claim elven hypocrisy, that you all have proven you were no "better", but do they not find an excuse for every horrific act their people have performed? Has their people not also once proclaimed that their particular race, ancestry, or heritage was the superior one of all?

Gritting your teeth, you force yourself to let it go. It doesn't really matter anymore, even if it feels like it's something you've been taking much more seriously recently. There have been times you have resorted to anger and bitterness to help cope with your situation, but it is a fleeting respite that results in you tasting ash for much longer than the blazing inferno it starts.

Entering the village, you take in the sight before you. The people behind its discovery and management decided to clear out of the area instead of providing a more direct tour, so you are able to get a mostly undisturbed view of the memorial village. Small but sturdy beige-colored structures greet you, its foundations standing strong to this day. Clear paths were made between them all as well even if they show more signs of being weathered. Some sparse vegetation are present, but you can see in the distance that the oasis has mostly dried up at this point.

Still, a feeling of… not quite peace, but slight contentment rises within you once you cross into the village boundaries. It seems the enchantments protecting it from the harsh desert still work to some degree.

"Moving on, the sun elves often made their homes deep in the deserts. This was primarily so they may be closer to the various threats that lived here while maintaining a certain distance from other peoples, but they also have served as guides to those lost and provided hospitality to various groups traveling across the desert. As you can see here, a tribe or village of sun elves often build their homes around an oasis, forming a little slice of serenity and paradise away from the desert."

You move your camera around to look at all the houses, "This is not too different from the elven tendency to stay in one place, but the sun elves were unique in also being semi-nomadic. They often formed their own oases through methods lost to time but made sure not to overuse them. Even with magic, such things are not without end, and constantly applying such magics tends to make the area unstable."

"It is why although well-built, these houses are not the grandest or majestic. It was best for beings that lived for hundreds or thousands of years to not get too attached to a home living the way they do. When they decide to leave, the buildings and oasis are left behind for other people to discover and use. An oasis sustained by magic will not last as long, but it may still save lives, and they make sure to leave warnings and advice behind as well. Their homes are then often broken down for materials, which is probably why there are not more sun elf villages around."

"However, because this village was hidden from sight still and remains in this state… I assume that somehow, the elves here must've perished before they could move on," you say, stopping.

Stopping by a ringed area with strange structures built within and around it, you tilt your head as you pan the camera to capture it all.

"I… believe this to be a leisure area of sorts. It is little known due to few people staying in an elven village for long periods of time, but many that lived in such communities had these places and structures. All elves have their reason for being, but it did not always consume every waking moment of their life. For long-lived beings such as us, having something to occupy our time and help keep things less dull is invaluable. This is why you may find areas not too dissimilar from a modern playground or park in other elven villages as well."

You start walking away, "Unfortunately, I know little of how the sun elves spent their time, so—"

Suddenly, a rumbling shakes the earth beneath you. Pivoting immediately back to the area, you look around for threats but find nothing. The quivering of the ground continues however, slowly getting more and more unstable. You catch sight of a distant figure running towards you however. The gnoll's face seems panicked as he waves his hands above his head. Is this something known to the people taking care of the site?

"Ms. Pathstrider! Please keep calm! This is simply the sandwyrm—"

He is cut off as a humongous, serpentine beast erupts from the sands in the playground to tower over everyone. Grains of sand fall from its brown shell in large streams as it opens its mouth to let out a screeching roar loud enough to make you take a step back. Its... "head" is a disturbing cross between a vaguely draconic shape and a worm's mouth enlarged to the point where the horror of its features are visible for all to see. Horns from a wyrm protrude from its head while the mouth and teeth of a worm rotate in a frightening display.

You do not know every little thing about beasts such as these… but beings like this must've surely gone extinct by now.

The gnoll from earlier gets up from where he fell and approaches you gingerly, looking back and forth between you and the sandwyrm.

"When we first found and entered this village, the sandwyrm burst out of the ground in front of us. We were all scared witless but it simply looked at us for a bit before going back down. It never came up again, so we put it out of our minds… but we apologize anyway for not informing you of it."

"Such a being surely must've had its finders tell tales of it, no?" You reply, still staring at the now approaching beast.

He shakes his head, "We had a few people connected to organizations protecting creatures such as these from poachers that swore us to silence. They take matters such as these very seriously. I suppose the secret is out now, but that was an inevitability. Perhaps this is the best possible way it could've happened."

The sandwyrm stops before you, hot air blowing against your skin as it observes you. If it has eyes you don't know what or where they are, but it clearly senses you in some capacity. You don't entirely know if you've ever encountered a sandwyrm despite all your travels. Traveling deep into the desert is something you've done rarely, and you suspect that if you were found by one in the wild before, you may not be here today.

But this wyrm clearly isn't some wild beast. As they get closer and closer and you start preparing to defend yourself in any way possible, they come by your face and then… move slightly beyond it before stopping. Slightly befuddled, it takes them starting to lean into you that you begin to understand their intentions.

Reaching out a hand, you run your fingers against their rough scale… shell exterior, stray grains of sand rubbing against your skin. A mumble escapes them as you continue your ministrations, as if they had been waiting for something like this for a very long while. The reverberations that they send across their body, ground, and you is a bit frightening, but it seems to make them even more relaxed. For a moment, the two of you simply remain there, two beings lost in time from an era long gone.

You don't know how long this lasts, but they eventually let out another low hum before slowly separating themself from you. They seem to tilt their head for a bit, looking in your direction, before their body begins to slither back down into the sand. They let out one last cry to you before their head descends back underground.

This was… unexpected. You weren't sure what you were looking for coming to this place, but it most definitely did not include a sandwyrm. Uncertain what to do with this new revelation, you look back at the chat on a whim, only to see messages being typed out at an unreadable pace.

Well then. At least you have achieved your goal of retaining your new followers.

With no knowledge of Fatoumata's current situation and whereabouts, you are forced to go around asking others for information. The most you get is that the miu is still being detained. Just when you're about to leave Sumeri with a promise to check on the demon hunter later however, Jasiri gets back to you with a confirmation that she's finally been released. Judging from her voice, the gnoll seemed worried. Her and Amin apparently already visited her, but she believes you might be able to help more.

You're skeptical about that, but this is how you find yourself at the front door of a large house bordering on being a manor or mansion. The garden in front is well-maintained, and a fence surrounds most of the house. Something seems a bit strange about the area though. It's almost as if some structures were removed from the premises. Deciding that it doesn't really matter, you knock on the pristine white door.

It doesn't take long for you to hear footsteps approaching to open it. Have they been waiting for you? The door opens to reveal an elderly human in dressed as a butler, greying hair and mustache perfectly trimmed. Blinking, you begin reevauluating certain things about Fatoumata. You understand that her father was the president, but he must've been very well-off or connected even before ascending to that position. That, or being a demon hunter pays more than you initially believed.

"Oh! Siri told me you might pay a visit, Ms. Pathstrider," the old human bows. "Welcome, I am Umaru Dambe. I have served the Jatau family for over thirty years now. Please, come in."

"Thank you," you say, regaining your composure. "This is a beautiful home."

He smiles, "I've spent much time ensuring it is, so I thank you for your appreciation. It's been difficult ever since those pesky invest—well, never mind that unpleasantness. Am I correct in assuming you are here to visit dear Fatoumata?"

"Yes, is she open to receiving visitors?"

"A-ah," his smile drops. "Well, perhaps she would prefer to be alone… but I'm sure she would be delighted to see you, Ms. Pathstrider."

You hum, not quite believing him but deciding not to call him out on it. The meaning seems to be clear anyway, and all signs point to a certain desperation in sending you to speak with her. Despite the obvious care put into the place, you can tell that something must have happened in the building with how suspiciously bare certain places are. An investigation team must've gone through the place and taken anything warranting a closer inspection. Judging by the small imperfections you can see in some spots, many of the servants here must have also left after news of the president came out.

Stopping by a partially closed door, the old human pauses for a moment to stare at it before turning to you.

"She should be here, Ms. Pathstrider. I shall give the two of you your privacy."

Taking the message that he'll leave you to talk with her alone, you nod and step past him to carefully push the door open. What greets you is… surprisingly mundane. It is a humble room with a few comfortable sofas and seats surrounding a table with various objects lying on top of it. A screen on the other side of the room is playing what you believe to be some kind of cooking show, though its volume is low enough that you aren't certain. Most of your attention is on the solitary figure sitting on a chair next to the central sofa anyway.

Fatoumata has seen better days. Her fur is frazzled and a complete mess, probably requiring an entire session dedicated to smooth it all out. The once proud miu is slouched over as she stares listlessly to the side of the screen, and she wears little else besides a baggy t-shirt and shorts. A bucket of some dessert rests on a stand next to her, uneaten and abandoned. Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be any alcohol or other substances here. Umaru must've removed them somehow. Sighing internally, you think on how to approach this. She is in a state that you are quite familiar with, when one is so lost in their despair and thoughts that they don't even seem to be thinking of anything in particular. And…

A rifle rests on her lap.

You stop.

"Fatoumata."

The miu doesn't move, continuing to stare off into the distance.

"...I see you have been released from the interrogation rooms. I'm glad I was able to see you again before I depart."

You didn't quite notice it at first, but she has been tapping a finger on the rifle in some kind of pattern the entire time. It also isn't hers. As you speak, Fatoumata seems to sink deeper into her chair, as if her body itself is trying to escape this conversation. The TV shows a giant making some sort of cake, happily speaking to the cameras and audience of the steps she is taking. Distant cheers and applause ring out as she reveals some delicious part of the recipe, crashing into the painful silence between you two.

"I myself was in there not too long ago. It was an uncomfortable process, and I hope you didn't have to undergo anything too strenuous."

No response.

Swallowing, you try desperately to figure out what to say. People like this… despite all the advancements made in understanding the mind, you know that it is almost impossible to know how a particular individual will deal with their grief and anguish. In the past, most were forced into performing some work or activity that takes their mind from it, but with Fatoumata having been in isolation for over two weeks then sitting alone in her home doing nothing…

You have already given what encouragement you could back at the palace. You're unsure if giving more would only set her off and make the miu feel worse. Perhaps something harsher to shock her system can work, but despite what anecdotal stories people have told of performing such things successfully, you know it can cause someone to spiral even further. Listening silently won't work since she isn't speaking in the first place. Mentioning the problems directly can backfire, no matter how delicately you broach the topic. Despite all your years, you are no mind reader, and you simply are not close enough to Fatoumata to know what works best with her. This isn't something you've ever been adept at handling.

You feel powerless.

"I've… introduced Ophelia to social media. I believe I have unleashed something onto Orbis that will have consequences none can predict."

The slight joking tone you adopt falls flat, but at least she doesn't seem to react negatively to it. Hesitating for a moment, you step forward to sit on the couch next to her. Taking care not to look at her or give any particular attention to anything about the miu, you direct your eyes at the screen.

You continue speaking, "You recall those children I asked you to keep my identity a secret from? I finally revealed to them the truth. Amina, the armored human, almost completely lost her composure from it. Frankly, it's still difficult for me to understand why some react in that manner to me, but I suppose I must be getting used to it."

The giant chef on the screen finally reveals the frankly ridiculously sized cake for the audience to see, earning awed applause and gazes from the audience. Fatoumata stops tapping her rifle, eyes locking onto the screen.

"I took the chance to visit the Citadel and the Sun Elf Memorial while I was here. Clara, ah, she is my manager, persuaded me to record my visit to the memorial. I was skeptical at first, but I suppose it turned out well. Oh, there was a sandwyrm that appeared as well there."

A twitch this time, though you don't know if your words or the group of people eating a giant slice on the screen caused it.

"Fatoumata... I shall be taking my leave of Sumeri soon. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with you."

The pair of you sit in silence for a moment, watching the last moments of the show. Listening to the chef give one last spiel at the end, Fatoumata remains still as it transitions into a loud and flashy commercial. Though reluctant to leave it like this, you suspect that you are not getting through to the miu. All you can do is believe in her and her friends to support Fatoumata. With a heavy heart, you stand up and prepare to make your exit.

"...we used to watch this together here."

You stop once more.

"Oh?"

Turning to look at Fatoumata, you wait for her to elaborate. She doesn't though, hunching over and staring at the ground as if uttering even that much has taken what little she had left within her. Heart twisting, you think of something else to say in response, but she manages to lift her head back up to your surprise before you can say anything. Her voice is hoarse, weak, and so painfully empty, but at least she speaks.

"Where… where are you going next?"

Choose one:

[] Avista
Avista is a superpower with the strongest military and industrial capacity on the continent and the main winner of the World War. Having begun as an optimistic union of Alerion, Merfolk, and Giants, they now have people of all races within their borders in a grand flock. All citizens that live within their borders are able to hold political offices, and they have invested the most into the United Peoples institution set up after the World War. With their hand in much of the modern technology invented during this era and their cultural influence spreading all over the world, their power is surpassed only by their ambition.

Despite its prosperity, Avista is a divisive land with change always in the air. Its diverse population has people taking all kinds of political, philosophical, and personal stances on various issues and ideas. From this, they have made great gains and rose to become a superpower, but the battle of beliefs and ideals can always become dangerous when ambitious people with power are involved. As an ancient elf far removed from the hustle and bustle of this new great power, see for yourself the great visions of its people, the newly developing social dynamics of a people living in a truly modern nation in this world, and the old and new sins committed by a nation with high ideals.

[] Tarshish
The previous undisputed superpower and heir of the Meso Empire, Tarshish is the main loser of the World War. Their once proud nation of people are now defeated and battered by loss and death. While the ancestral lands of the lacerta, centaurs, sylvan, and myconids remain a powerhouse and hold strong military and industrial capabilities, their infrastructure is still in tatters in some areas and their society hasn't fully adapted to the fast-paced modern globalized world outside certain urban centers and regions. They are bitter about being blamed for the war and the reparations they are still paying for today, but many people mostly want a stable life amidst the somewhat chaotic state Tarshish has been in.

They are the still most populous nation with the most advanced magic academies and numerous cultural, religious, and historical institutions. They still pride themselves in being the center of the world and bridge between west and east, north and south, and sea to sea. As an ancient elf who both fought against them in the war and aided them in past times, find a way to help its citizens, mend ties, remind a people of their strong history in a constructive manner, and lend your aid as another who seems lost in this modern age.

[] Zhonghua
The home of the Yuren and Longren is an ancient land that has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties. The age of globalization and modernization affected them deeply, upending their society and government as they were forced out of their relative isolation during the centuries before the World War. They have however bounced back and now emerge as a rising great power in the world after being part of the victors in the World War. Theirs is a land of duality and sharp contrasts, where you might meet a meditating mystic with three magical beasts next to a construction team building a set of factories as their land adjusts to incorporate new developments as seamlessly as Avista or Tarshish do.

Young citizens of the ancient empire however clash with the traditions set by millennia of precedent and upheld by the Jade Emperor. Having long been uncaring or condescending towards other nations for much of its history, Zhonghua struggles with international diplomacy and efforts, further exacerbating the divide in attitudes. As an ancient elf who once was received as honored guest in their courts, analyze the blend of old and new, dive headfirst into the complicated issue of the Jade Emperor's rule, explore the underground movements, and connect with a people who have long stayed out of international affairs.

[] The Small Republic
An alliance made by Halflings, Gnomes, Goblins, Minima, and Mus. These five races often faced discrimination and were forced into certain roles or collectives in societies dominated by large races. Some time after the Great Convention led by Archbishop Ismael, influential groups of these races rode the tide of increasing international cooperation and unity to form their own nation to gain their independence from other races. They formed their own society and infrastructure designed to suit them, not people twice or thrice their height. In this nation, people from all five races can be free to pursue their own dreams and desires instead of being shoehorned into a role by others.

While other nations scoffed, the combined knowledge and skills of these five races created a, well, small, but prosperous nation beholden to no others and a strong reputation of neutrality. They managed to mostly stay out of the World War, but the increasing globalism of the world threatens to leave them in the dust. As an ancient elf who once aided and befriended the smallfolk, explore a one of a kind civilization and culture, open yourself to a suspicious people, and demonstrate the world's value to a people embittered towards it.

[] New Hope
A city of technological marvels, home of powerful corporations, and an ender of dreams. The city was established after the World War in the Mana Scar to ease ties, heal the wound in the land, and connect people from around the world while building up a truly modern city. Various nations abandoned the project for one reason or another over the decades after, and the people there were left to fend for themselves. With minimal support, this city in the Mana Scar looked doomed to die off or be abandoned.

Powerful corporations and organizations saw it as an ideal spot to exert their influence, and soon it became a city ruled by businesses and gangs. With unethical experiments and numerous weapons tests done on or near its borders, it holds a strong connection with technology and can even match Avista in certain fields. Its people find it hard to leave, both from direct measures to prevent it and from the tempting hooks the city likes to bait people with. As an ancient elf of the old tales, go to this destination which leaves behind the past, explore a world which commercializes things thought sacred, and gain a taste of what a bleaker future might look like for Orbis.

[] Yashima
The people of this island nation once were the frontrunners of technological advancement and mortal transcendence until a great calamity struck the entire land through the very same ambition that drove them. After the "Impact", the people live in truly apocalyptic living conditions with otherworldly monsters invading their reality. A great corrosive air now suffuses much of the islands and surrounding waters, and the international community has isolated and quarantined the nation off from the rest of the world after multiple failed attempts in providing a consistent stream of aid. An entire country and the majority of its people gone, just like that.

Rumors abound from what little has been gleaned from refugees and those that survived the few attempts at reaching the island. Some say the people of the nation have developed resistances to these corruptive effects through strange mutations. Others claimed the people there have all gone mad. A few swore they saw strange and powerful abilities from the people and monsters there. As an ancient elf experienced in dealing with calamities such as this, travel to this nation with sophontarian aid, work to reopen the nation with the rest of the world, stabilize the last urban center heard from there, and investigate the mysteries behind the Impact.

(Will require certain actions to go there. You will perform various actions to receive an invitation from the United Peoples so you can convince them to lift the quarantine and get in contact with people and groups for an expedition.)

Fame has increased by a tier, going from Good to Great. Due to your actions and subsequent social media interaction, the people of Orbis have taken more notice of you.
(2/3) progress for Mental Health to progress to the next tier. Despite everything that has happened, you ultimately feel somewhat more assured of everything, though not enough to feel completely comfortable about it.
Gained Wisdom of Ages. Power and capability are not numerical values that constantly go up. You have confronted a grave threat and immersed yourself in a tense investigation with lives at stake however, regaining a bit of the edge you have lost. Gain +1 to combat rolls and various other rolls related to your expertise.
(1/3)
You skipped going to Yashima first. Even if it was for perfectly good reasons, it bothers you still to not go to their aid. While you might be able to justify going someplace else next, you don't know how long you will be able to put it off. (Once this hits 3/3, each time Deirdre chooses not to go to Yashima, she will take a significant hit to her mental health)

AN:
Here we go once more! It is time to move on to the next nation. This chapter took me a while to get in the right mindset to write about, and I'm still not sure I really gave it my best here, but I really didn't want to wait much longer. Hopefully you guys found the sun elf portion interesting. As for the Fatoumata part... yes, I left a lot of it to implication, but Fatoumata is going to take a while to get out of this headspace even with what you guys said before. It's not quite as bad as it seems despite what I wrote, but she is definitely not having a good time especially after getting ruthlessly interrogated for over two weeks on the situation.

I remember saying that I did not intend for Deirdre to get much stronger over the course of the story. However, I felt like it made sense to give her a bit of a boost for getting back into things. You guys will probably not get anything like that again for a long while though, so don't expect power ups every volume. The main things that will fluctuate is fame, health, and possibly reputation/wealth/directive depending what happens.

To Deirdre, I think it makes sense that Yashima is bothering her, and I wanted to implement that as something to consider in the quest. However, I don't want to completely force you to go there next, so if there's a destination a majority wish to go for next, you guys have one more choice before things start getting a bit difficult for her to ignore. The side stories I've posted a while back still give a pretty good idea I think into the other nations, so read them if you want a bit more information/perspective on them!

I was a little lazy and just copy pasted the descriptions from the prologue finale, but I can answer any questions if you guys have them of the volume so long as it isn't completely spoilery. Might write out some descriptions later as well. Remember, go to wherever is most interesting to you. Despite some places being harder than others, Deirdre is not incapable of making an impact in any of them and you won't be getting significantly stronger anyways.

Think I'll close the vote in 24 hours since it's an important one. Might extend it even. Yashima has a large lead, but there's seem to be some interest for New Hope. If some who haven't voted vote in that direction and a vote or two is swayed, I can see the lead diminishing. Mmm, I'll give some tidbits maybe.

While those who have spoken about it are correct that Yashima is probably a little more dangerous than any other nation, I will say that at this moment New Hope isn't too far behind. There are some very heavy hitters in that city.

Most probably neither New Hope and Yashima are going to be 100% saved and turned into a paradise even with a successful venture there. The problems run way too deep. What you will be giving is, well, hope and a chance aha. Which is very important. The situation in New Hope isn't quite at like, the sheer global mess like Cyberpunk or whatever the hell is happening in Project Moon. Neither is Yashima quite at the point of no return for post-apocalyptic settings. While it's very, very bad in both, it is at least not at that point where there is a complete and absolute loss of any chance of things being better.

Fame will probably be a little more important for Yashima, and it's possible that you will get more of it from going to New Hope(or other places). It's also possible you may lose some of it. it works both ways as well, as going to Yashima may or may not open certain avenues for New Hope and other nations as it's probably the most significant and impactful action Deirdre can do.

Granted, while New Hope is just one city and can't match the importance of opening an entire country for the millions of displaced Yashimans and who knows how many in the country, it's definitely still a place with a lot of hidden influence and impact on the world. Whatever happens there will definitely shake things up in the world depending how it goes.

A little crumb for the Small Republic voters. Going there is a little more important than it seems at first glance. Same goes with most nations that aren't "holy shit we are all dying right now", but there's a reason they're there with all the big dogs despite being relatively minor.

As for the big three(Avista, Tarshish, Zhonghua)... well, I suppose if I were to change things over time, those three would be the nations that would definitely have their situations degraded the most...

Also, if any are worried, if Yashima is chosen, Deirdre will find a way there even if things don't go well with the UP. Even if she has to get there with way less than ideal means. All that being said, you guys DEFINITELY WANT THE UP'S SUPPORT.

That's all I can think of... if you guys have any more questions you want to ask, feel free!

Taken aback by the sudden shift from Fatoumata, you automatically begin to look back on the past week. You were not idle in the time since you've been released from the interrogation room. The urge to move on had already built up to the point where you've been thinking on where to go next, and with Clara visiting and time on your hands, you've done a little research on possible destinations.

While there always seems to be something going on in the news, you don't see anything particularly damning in most places. You don't doubt that there is something deeper going on in any of the nations, but for now you don't feel the need to head towards many of them without more research and information. At least, that's what you tell yourself. Two places in particular have already been at the forefront of your mind before your search. Perhaps you've only done it all to confirm your choice.

New Hope and Yashima both contain a majority of their population living in hardship. The situation of the latter has troubled you for over a decade, and you've long pondered what you can do. An entire nation of people in the modern era undergoing a disaster reminiscent of ancient myth is of such scale as to render all other concerns null, but you know best of all that measuring suffering in such a manner is flawed at best.

Who are you to judge which is more "important" to help? New Hope has been left alone and abandoned by those that founded it. There are at least plausible reasons for Yashima to be quarantined and isolated, but that cursed city has been left to the mercies of not demons or monsters, but by their fellow peoples. It is a place most have put out of their mind already with few advocating for any sort of positive change.

It then comes down to a question of how exactly you can help the two. You may have been at a loss for what to do about Yashima for a decade, but it has always been a question of scale and how to get things started, not what to accomplish. Thanks to Clara's research, you can see obvious issues with New Hope, yet what can you do about it? You doubt you can simply waltz in and kill every villain in that city. Even if you could, would that really help? Perhaps you'll stumble on something like in Nokoyo, but the city has so many different problems that simply resolving one won't change anything.

In the end, you pick the cause which has kept you awake in countless nights, for you always felt deep down that you are in a unique and prime position to contribute to it. Both destinations beckon to you, but only one slides past your doubts and worries to whisper in the deep recesses of your mind, beckoning you to undertake this endeavor. To embark on this grand adventure…

"Yashima."

For the first time since you've entered the room, Fatoumata visibly reacts. A familiar look of incredulity flashes across her face as her head tilts.

"That… excuse me?"

You smile as you say, "I'm heading towards Yashima."

"No, no. I... heard you the first time," she sits straight back up. "I know that you can be a bit... out of touch with things, but you do know that place has been closed off, right? There's… probably not much of it left for you to visit."

Her voice is still hoarse and low, but your answer has her peering at you with focus and intent. Some vitality seems to return to her with each word spoken. You don't quite know what she was looking for asking you your next destination, but at the very least the shock seems to be helping her.

"I'm well aware. That is precisely why I must go. To brave the unknown and deal with whatever dangers lie in there… is that not my calling?"

Fatoumata shakes her head mutely, "No, things don't work like that anymore Deirdre. You can't just go there all on your lonesome and solve everything."

"I know," you agree. "I have thought this over for years, Fatoumata. The fact that I with my elvish blood have not already gone there should speak to my painful awareness of its difficulties. After the events here in Sumeri however, I am no longer willing to wait. It is time to ride the wave of my fame as far as I can while using the most effective tools of this era."

The miu thinks over what you've said, sharp mind clearing through the cobwebs and dust that have gathered in her thoughts. Realization dawns in her eyes as they widen in your direction.

"You want to run a social media campaign to grab the UP's attention and receive an invitation to speak to the council. Once you do, you will try to convince a majority of its members to agree to this venture, and using the interest groups and organizations you've already garnered support from, start a chain of events that will inevitably lead to some action taken regarding Yashima. By using your status as an elf with an impeccable reputation, you can create a figure that all peoples may rally behind and associate with aiding the nation."

You blink.

"Yes—"

Fatoumata leans back as she interrupts you, "I don't know if Sumeri will be for it. If you had done this before coming here, I suspect that we'd either be apathetic or against it. Even if what you recently did helps your chances, the damned place is still fractious. There may be some sympathy with another nation dealing with threats beyond the veil, but we also have little to give or gain from this. It's likely we'll claim that we have our own issues to focus on."

After a moment of silence, the miu seems to realize what she has just spout out and shrinks into herself once again. The strange energy that gripped her dissipates with the final words of her analysis as she comes back to reality.

"Thank you for your honest appraisal," you say, trying to rouse her again. "I'll take it into account when devising my strategy. If you have more insight to share…?"

Fatoumata looks down with a darkening expression but still speaks, "...my father liked to reach out to global institutions and link himself to universal values. Since it's the UP you're trying to persuade you can't choose them, but there's others I'm sure you have in mind. He has always pushed for unity and action on a nationwide level, and broad appeals were important in that."

"I sense a 'however from this…"

"However, we both know the result of his actions. It could be perfectly unrelated, but the path he took didn't get him to where he wanted. I still think you should get in touch with those groups, but consider which of them will be helpful in particular for this. Some of them may be more impactful than others in certain areas. Then, perhaps try looking at something on a more regional level, or just something outside the usual channels."

You wondered where she was going with this, but now you see some sense in her words. Casting the net as wide as you can while getting the most attention and broad appeal possible is essentially your plan, but perhaps targeting a specific audience in particular may be wise? You're uncertain, but it's something to discuss with Clara for sure.

Filing away her advice, you smile and approach her. She looks warily as you come closer, but doesn't protest as you come to a stop before her.

"You have my gratitude for this. Clara has been helpful, but I fear her perspective may be a little too influenced as an Avistan."

Fatoumata waves it off, "It's nothing much. I just have a passing interest in politics because of… well, you know."

"Still, you continue to help even when I am about to leave," you insist. "Fatoumata… are you truly alright?"

The miu sucks in a breath and looks away from you.

"If I say yes, will you leave me alone?"

You sigh, "I will not push either way. Just, if there is anything I can do before I go, do not hesitate to ask."

Fatoumata stares off into the distance, tapping on her rifle absentmindedly as she does so. While whatever interest she had in your destinations seems to have faded away, she at least isn't quite as despondent as before. The intent and direction she always carried herself with seems to have returned. In truth, you believe you've done everything you can already, but it also didn't hurt to ask and confirm it.

She seems to come to a conclusion as she sighs, puts aside her rifle, and stands up.

"Don't tell Jasiri about this. She'll be insufferable."

Then, she embraces you. More accurately, she spreads out her arms and awkwardly wraps them around you. Surprised yourself, it takes a moment for you to return it. By the time you do, you already feel the miu wanting to disengage from what she just started, but you pat her on the back comfortingly. You feel another exasperated sigh leave her as the two of you remain in the hug for a short while. She finally settles on where to place her arms during this time even if her tense posture never quite loosens up.

Fatoumata does not break into tears or sob into your shoulder, and as the two of you separate, you can tell that she is unsure how she feels about what she just initiated. Still, you suppose anything that can break her out of the daze she was in helps.

"That's the last time I listen to any of her advice," she mumbles before looking back up at you. "Alright, get going already. I'll be fine. I just… need some time alone. Go do your crazy elf things already. I suppose I'll be watching it all, so don't screw anything up too badly."

With an enigmatic smile you know annoys the miu, you say your farewells and leave the room. Umaru, the butler, meets you halfway on the way out of the home. Seeing your smile and nod, the man visibly sags in relief and sends a grateful look in your direction before continuing his activities with a new energy. Despite the great task before you, it is these little things that give you the will and strength to carry on, and you are glad you've chosen to stick around a little longer. You'll need every last bit of them for the trials ahead.

Sitting alone in the airship, you look down at the notes you have written down together with Clara. The alerion has already traveled back to Avista to be with her family, but the two of you managed to put together a general plan of action for this endeavor and finishing any additional discussions over the tablet. Neither of you could have planned out every step, but putting together enough key points and concepts then adapting as you go is well within your reach.

The UP Council consists of seven members, five of whom are permanent members with the last two elected every two years. Avista, Tarshish, Sumeri, Sindhu, and Zhonghua were selected to sit on the council after the World War. Most historians agree this was set up to give the pretense of fairness and representation while keeping the majority with the war's main victors in Avista, Sumeri, and Zhonghua. It didn't quite pan out that way however, and what you've gathered is that the balance between the big five is often tenuous as policies and political stances diverged.

Of the main five, it is difficult to predict which way they'll go. Avista is the nation furthest away from Yashima, but they've historically been in favor of intervention and grand sophontarian projects. Tarshish and Sindhu will largely be disinterested and apathetic unless there is some incentive for them, and may even take issue with you being the central figure as you fought against them in the war unlikely as it is. Sumeri may be persuaded and open to the idea, but they are by no means a lock. Zhonghua has long had a thorny relationship with Yashima and will probably be your most ardent opponent, but even though Clara disagrees, you don't think it's impossible to convince them.

In the end, you and your manager grouped the nations into three categories. Those likely to vote in favor of supporting Yashima, which for now only includes Avista. Those neutral or indifferent currently like Sumeri, Tarshish, and Sindhu. Lastly, those likely to vote against, which likely will be Zhonghua's stance. The two temporary seats are of interest of you in this dynamic, but you'll leave them for later. For now, your attention is on more neutral and international organizations. No such group is entirely viewed the same way by the nations obviously, but your current goal is to have the world's eyes on you and Yashima.

Technically, you can call for a meeting as the elvish delegate to the UP. As there are many races without a clearly defined nation or country they can call a homeland, the UP also has representatives and delegates of various people groups, hence their name and focus. In many cases, the UP often takes matters regarding race, ancestry, and species more seriously and strictly than national sovereignty, demonstrating their exactness even with elven laws and representation despite you being their only surviving member.

You know however that simply forcing a meeting to speak on this will not grant you their votes, and that you have to build up support and draw eyes to the matter for you to have a chance. Receiving an invitation is far more preferable, as you will have pressured the council enough to grant you an audience. It will also focus the conversation on Yashima rather than you using your role to advocate for a different topic entirely. Having to answer questions about what this has to do with elven matters in addition to persuading them to lift the quarantine and send aid to Yashima will lead to an uphill battle.

With all these thoughts swirling in your mind, you realize with a start that this is really happening. You are about to start an initiative all on your own to help Yashima in their time of need. Despite all your years, it's enough to make your leg shake as you tap your fingers on it in agitation. You've never really been the one with the grand quest or vision. All your life, you observed and occasionally supported those who did, constantly traveling to witness the next great venture of others.

Part of you wonders if that is why you've waited so long. After the quarantine was established around Yashima, you thought that surely a new hero would rise to meet this challenge and resolve it like they've always done. You waited, and waited, and waited, and yet still Yashima has been left to die by the world. Debates and discussions were had, but it was as if the world has collectively decided to not act. No great or humble figure rose to the occasion, and instead all the news showed was the plight of refugees and how the various nations will handle them.

There has been a discourse that has gained traction over the past few hundred years. That the time of heroes is dead and all now rests with the complex and delicate web of relationships between people, organizations, and states. Some have even proclaimed that heroes and grand figures as people imagine them never really existed, with all events in Orbis the result of an innumerable number of small factors and events that eventually interact to construct the history as all know it.

Perhaps there is some truth to these suppositions… but you have seen the acts of the divine that have reshaped entire landscapes. You have seen powerful and influential mortals determine the fate of millions with their actions. You have seen what a person in the right place and time can do, for good or ill. The butterflies flap their wings, but there still must be someone who can follow the currents.

You don't know if Orbis no longer has those sorts of heroes, but it doesn't matter at the end of the day. Someone must take the first step and make a stand. If all who are willing are unable to, and those who are capable are unwilling, then it is up to you as an outsider to it all to come in and break everyone out of their inertia. Staring uncertainly outside the window, you take a deep, shuddering breath. You of all people should know that the great figures who changed history were little different. They never knew what to do all the time nor did they succeed in everything they did.

Yet they pushed on and led the way regardless, seizing and making opportunities as they went. Whether it was fate or coincidence, neither changes the simple fact that they went out and succeeded. You may not have a prophecy or a call to action backing you, but such things rarely benefited the ones affected by them. Did all the heroes you followed wait for a signal or right time to intervene? Perhaps all did to some extent, but that doesn't change the fact that they went against the accepted status quo to act even against strong opposition and common wisdom. You should have done the same years ago, but late is better than never.

Suddenly feeling weary, you look away and close your eyes. You don't know what's in store for you, but the weight pressing into your shoulders gives you little recourse but to stumble forward. What you've conveniently left out are the many who fell on the path those celebrated figures tread on. Perhaps you shall be added to their number, but if your bones are needed to build the first part of this road, then so be it. Who better than you to undertake a great adventure first in this era?

This will be a plan vote. Choose one option from below to endorse and support you right as you start posting on social media. This will set the tone for your cause and serve as your main backer. Choose three options from below to support you after. These will be important groups you reach out to with your initial burst of attention that will expand your reach and bolster your cause, shoring up anything you might've missed. Lastly, choose one option from below to investigate further before asking them for their aid. You will end up getting a better idea of what they will offer and how best to approach them, but they likely will not play a big part in getting you attention.

[] The Light
Securing the public support and endorsement of the most prominent faith in Orbis will most definitely give you the attention you want. Many charity and sophontarian organizations are linked to them in some way, and they have influence all over the continent. They are a very large group however with many differing perspectives and factions, and you will be unlikely to develop any personal ties or connections that can be leveraged into something more. Some nations will not react very strongly to the faith as well, and Yashima was one with a somewhat more limited Light presence. Still, you are relatively confident that you can secure some support from them, and the possible direct assistance they can provide Yashima is significant.

[] Businesses
It boggles your mind that what seems to be glorified merchants wield so much power and influence these days, but it would be foolish to ignore and dismiss them. You know that such figures, tempted by opportunity as they are, may be persuaded on the potential benefits of seeing if there is anything to gain from Yashima after its decimation. Gaining the support of big businesses and large corporations will not only give Yashima much needed resources to rebuild, but will also undoubtedly be able to pressure certain figures in the UP to accept your proposal. Whether it will be worth whatever they want in exchange or dealing with some of their less than stellar reputation is up for debate, but you begrudgingly admit that Clara may have a point that neglecting them may be equally detrimental.

[] Independent Sophontarian Organizations
While many institutions and organizations dedicated to sophontarian matters are linked to the UP, there are several nonprofit NGOs and other independent groups that may be eager to back a genuine effort to see aid delivered to Yashima. Individually, most of them probably won't be able to sway that many people, but gathering the support of as many as you can may create a plea the UP cannot ignore. There is little baggage compared to other choices with many of these organizations, and while they do not have the strongest appeal to any one region, succeeding in this will give you at least some inroads with all of them.

[] Magi Society
An unusual choice to ask for support from, but you think it possible to convince them on the merits of exploring the many mysteries surrounding the Impact that hit Yashima. While it may not at first give you much attention, the uncharacteristic public speaking out of a political topic from the normally quiet organization will draw some curious gazes. The very real benefits of having interested mages come along however may nevertheless be offset by the obscurity and slight suspicion of the group. Still, as a nontraditional option, they may provide an unintentional edge in this effort.

[] Activist and Academic Groups
There are many groups and individuals that, while not focused on providing sophontarian aid, may nevertheless be interested in seeing the quarantine lifted on Yashima. Of all nations in Orbis, they have always been the most isolated from the rest of the world, and there are many historical and cultural reasons for people to go and try and preserve as much as they can. Seeing the many displaced Yashimans having their homeland returned to them will be a rallying point for activists. Having noteworthy academic experts provide their analysis and contribution on why lifting the quarantine is a good idea may also support the cause. However, despite the many different ways and methods they can back you up on, their actual impact may be in question.

[] Pop Cultural Icons
While this group may mainly consist of people appealing to a certain region that you wish to avoid for now, there are several famous enough to be well-regarded in the entire continent. Gaining an audience with even one of them may be difficult, and you are somewhat dubious of their potential impact, but Clara assures you that managing to secure even a single one's endorsement will get you the attention you need. They can apparently reach audiences that all the other options likely won't, but you are also aware that some of these icons may be a little controversial.

[] Yashiman Refugee and Reclamation Association
Perhaps it is strange that getting into contact with an organization solely focused on Yashima is not first on your list, but Clara raised interesting points about them. In the ten years since the Impact, the Yashima Refugee and Reclamation Association has not succeeded in getting other nations to send aid directly to the lost island. Additionally, having them be one of your main supporters might be a bit redundant. People will already know that you wish to aid Yashima, and having them with you may just signal that you simply support them rather than actually planning to do anything about it. They will probably endorse you even without you spending time to contact them too.

Then again… can you really not include and discuss with Yashimans in a matter directly concerning them?

Example Vote (doesn't have to look exactly like this if someone has a better looking format, but something along these lines. So long as the three parts of the plan vote are clear in each person's vote. I'll make sure to count votes individually if I have to if the tally doesn't end up working well).

[] Plan Blah blah:
-[]First choice
--[]Choice 1 of 3
--[]Choice 2 of 3
--[]Choice 3 of 3
---[]Investigative choice

AN:
Whew, sorry this took so long to come out. It was a lot harder to write than I initially thought, and there were some things that took some time away from me (Thanksgiving) in getting it all out. Anyways, it's time for you all to play the social media game. This will be split in two parts, one dedicated to international organizations/figures, and one trying to appeal to more regional areas. Then if Deirdre is invited, it will start the UP section, and then finally if that is resolved successfully, we'll go to Yashima. I'm excited for this, and I hope you all are too! If there are any questions/confusion about this, feel free to ask. Two matters I'll elaborate a little on:

Not choosing one of these does not necessarily mean they'll be entirely out of the picture, but their actions will be out of your control and probably less benenficial.

I haven't fully decided the two temporary members, but since I didn't really want to wait any longer to get this out, I decided to post anyways. Just know that one of them will likely be in favor and the other likely against it.

I may or may not answer if certain choices will be better for certain nations or not. There's too many considerations there to put in a single update, and Deirdre doesn't quite know for sure of everything about that, but if there's a particular question I can answer about it, I'll do so.

In deciding who to ask to support you first on your first announcement, you naturally settle on the various institutions of the Light. There were practical concerns in this of course, with your reputation and fame among them significantly higher as someone who fought in the Crusades and was a close companion of the first Archbishop. In truth, you simply are more familiar and comfortable with the idea of cooperating with them than anyone else. The faith has provided you with a solace that had been missing ever since the Incursion ended, and there are some matters difficult to be objective about.

Deirdre Fame Roll(The Light): 3d6: 3+4+1 = 8 (8+4(Great Fame)+1(Faithful)+1(Crusade Hero) = 14) Slight Success

Unfortunately, it seems that time has done enough to erode the tie between you and the Light's leadership. It is perhaps unrealistic to expect the Archbishop to meet with you on a whim… but there was an undeniable hope for it that you couldn't quite quash. The silence in response to your request was telling, and you had to take a moment to yourself once it was clear you would not have the aid of the Archbishop.

That Ismael was no longer here.

Clara and you have prepared for this eventuality however, undesirable as it is. You've sent mail both physical and digital, calls, and even entered some temples and churches in-person to make your case. Predictably, the faith in Sumeri was for it, but not having support outside there would muddy your message and have others suspecting your motivations to be transactional in some manner due to your aid rendered to them.

There is surprisingly strong support from the faith in Zhonghua, but the Light never quite reached the same level of strength in that nation as some others. The Jade Emperor was first above all there, and people of varying religions have either been persecuted or had their faith used by the imperial court to have an easier time controlling the populace. You remember the trials Ismael and you underwent even after the delegation sent by Zhonghua generally approved of the Great Council.

In short, you gather that many Yashiman refugees in that nation flocked to the faith to help defend them against discrimination, and while heartening to know, you realize that the Light in Zhonghua would not be bright enough a beacon for what you need. That will come from an unlikely source. You're not sure if Clara managed to pull on the right connections or if they simply were interested in you, but the cardinal of Avista, head of the Light in that nation with influence all over Western Kiengir, cordially invited you to meet with him.

"Ah, Ms. Pathstrider, it truly is an honor to meet with you in my very own temple here in Avista. Fate must have played a role in our meeting this day."

You sit in an extravagant dining room of sorts with the merman, decidedly out of place with all the finery and decorations in it. The reflective golden utensils almost shining with light must've cost a fortune, and a meal consisting of the rarest edible sea creatures is casually served to you as if it is no great cost. Dressed in more conservative formal wear this time of golden leaves and plants covering your body, you feel more like a somewhat peculiar decoration in the room than a visitor.

"Perhaps so," you allow, a polite coolness settling over you. "I am appreciative that you have granted me an audience."

Cardinal Charles Edwards smiles, "But of course! I would not refuse such an earnest request from one of Ismael's companions. It may be so that others outside our country have forgotten, but the faithful here in Avista are taught of your teachings from an early age."

"Oh?"

"Indeed. Your descriptions of the elven celestials resonate well with the spirit of our people! The idea of choosing which divinity to help guide you and treating them as honored mentors rather than flawless beings is especially in line with the many diverse peoples here, allowing each to find their own path. All while paying heed to the one true force above all, the Light, of course."

You lean back, hiding a slight frown in your face. Avista wasn't the nation it is now back when Ismael was alive, if it even really existed then. The Light never established a strong foothold in the region in those times, and the nation often had a somewhat fraught relationship with the faith due to the fact many of its enemies were ardent followers of it. In fact, Avista actually suffered a Crusade of sorts, one of the few such incidents after the religious turmoil that occurred when the Incursion was closed.

Eventually, Avista and its people did adopt the faith, but in somewhat ironic fashion, they share similarities with Zhonghua in never letting the Light outshine their national identity even if many more adherents to the faith exist in Avista. You don't blame them. The Light is not, and can not, be flawless. Ismael did his best, but the flexibility and openness he so advocated often allowed more objectionable people to draw power from the faith. Charles claims on the appreciation the common Avistan may have for the Light may be a little overstated.

Now, however, isn't the time to debate and counter this cardinal.

"I am glad that the Light here is bright, Cardinal. " you say instead, nodding.

"Yes, yes. Despite some of the… less faithful present," he says, barely holding himself back from saying something less charitable. "I am proud to say that Avista enjoys the Light's rays. But… I am sure you realize that many outside this fair nation are not so blessed."

Taking the lead-in to the conversation you're both here for he offers, you nod, "Quite so. Let us speak of the matter at hand then. Yashima and its people have been left in the dark for too long. I believe it is high time we've banished the gloom choking that land. Do you agree?"

The Cardinal smile grows wider, "Beautifully put, Ms. Pathstrider. We here in Avista will of course offer what we can to our faraway fellows in Yashima. I have spoken with the lost Yashimans that have come all the way here, and many are those with which the Light shines so brightly within them despite the horrors they have faced!"

Your eyes narrow slightly. You are of course happy that he accepted so easily, but…

"I am glad to lead the way for the faith in this virtuous endeavor. The Light shines brightest here, and we shall demonstrate that to the world. Long have the others tolerated unfaithfulness outside here, unknowing of the dangers such a stance allows. Of course, the Archbishop has my respect, but the texts have always warned us of the dangers of blind obedience to any single authority. I say that our success in this mission ordained by the Light and... partnership will pave the way for some changes in the current status quo, do you not agree?"

There it is. Keeping your expression even in the face of the slightly too passionate smile and eyes from the cardinal, you consider the implications of this. In response to the struggles of the religion establishing itself in Avista, the faithful here have often been a bit more fervent than others. Nothing too extreme, you think, but there's no denying the differences that have divided it from other interpretations and practices of the Light along with the Avistan people.

Cardinal Charles's zeal has certainly spurred him to harbor certain ambitions, and you do not miss him mentioning "changes in the current status quo" right after bringing up the Archbishop. Politics. Your lips want to curl in distaste. This is definitely not what you desired. Of course, there is a certain degree of expectation of such things even if you had met with the Archbishop, but participating in internal division and affairs isn't what you expected.

But… ambition is not a sin. It is easy to say this man is just power-hungry, but if someone genuinely believes that they can do a better job than someone else, is it wrong that they would want to oust them? Change and growth are the domain of mortals as well, for better or worse. At the very least you do not doubt that he is a genuine follower of the Light. He would not have his position and be in this church if he wasn't. Religious figures with genuine, demonstrable power are easy to test after all.

"Indeed. Let us discuss how best to bring it about, hm?"

The Cardinal's eyes gleam as he leans forward, "Excellent. May this spur us to new heights with which to shine from…"

It may be good to keep him close. Just as the Light allows somewhat unsavory people to follow it at times, so too does it allow them to change. If he steps off the virtuous path, you'll at least be in position to stop him. You will cooperate with him for now however. After all, you cannot afford to be picky with Yashima on the line, and perhaps deep down… even if the Archbishop had their reasons, you would prefer working with someone who actually answered you in your and Yashima's time of need regardless of his motivations.

Deirdre Reputation Roll(ISO): 3d6: 6+2+3 = 11. (11+5(Phenomenal Reputation)+1(Breaker of Chains)-1(Light Affiliation)-1(Avistan Light Endorsement) = 15) Moderate Success)

"Quite frankly, we were not enthused to see your endorsement by The Light, especially by its Avistan side."

Sitting across from you is the concealed director of WATCH, one of the largest non-Light or UP affiliated sophontarian organizations in Orbis. They are dedicated towards upholding sophontarian rights, particularly in helping disenfranchised and marginalized peoples while fighting discrimination everywhere it appears. It may not be the largest or most powerful organization, but their strong public image and platform often rallies many more people than their resources alone might be capable of. While they may not be successful every time, anything that has earned their ire in some way will always have a black mark that leaves doubt in people sympathetic towards WATCH.

You have already obtained the support of a few organizations as well as some endorsing you on their own initiative, but there's been a few questioning your motivations. Some of them you have dismissed as lost causes or bad faith actors, but WATCH is a group you have to confront.

You lean forward on the desk, "But you have accepted my request for an audience anyways. Why? I will not cater to you or beat around the bush if that is your intention. If you are not open for even negotiations, then I do not have time for this."

The director looms over you threateningly, but you stand firm. While you may respect their hardline stance, you cannot allow yourself to be swayed by it. Showing weakness and a lack of resolve will only confirm their view of you. You know their type, having fought alongside and against them at times. The people likely to be in WATCH will break before bending, and they have a dim view of any who do not share that will.

"Yashima has been something we have been working on for quite a while. You are not the first to call for aid to be sent there, but you have possibly stirred the most amount of interest and attention to it in a long while."

Looking away disinterestedly, you state, "Ah, so you have been swayed by popular opinion then? I had thought that WATCH was unaffected by such factors…"

"Tch, then you know very little about us, Deirdre Pathstrider," you hear the biting response. "We perhaps care the most about the majority opinion, for we have often been the only ones fighting against it. It just so happens that for once our stance may be matching yours in this."

Raising an eyebrow, you side eye them, "Then you agree to assist Yashima and its people?"

The director exhales, "Don't think I don't understand what you're doing and your attempts to frame the situation in a certain way. We have always supported the displaced Yashimans and refugees while exploring options on what to do about the quarantine. Currently, we think you represent a chance in which we may be able to do more for both."

"But?"

"We shall publicly endorse you if you will allow a few of our members to come with you on this potential expedition to observe and ensure nothing untoward is done to the Yashimans back in Yashima, as well as being invited to coordinate with you to make certain whatever you advocate for or speak on are in alignment with common sophontarian values."

"Fine," you agree, irritation building up within you. "Do you honestly believe I am advocating for the quarantine to be lifted so that I, what, can exploit the Yashimans somehow?"

They glare back at you, "Pathstrider. It is only because of your almost spotless reputation that we are considering this at all. If you had been anyone else, we would rightfully be skeptical of you. Someone who has never publicly said anything about Yashima suddenly speaking out and earning widespread support from various mainstream institutions and establishments? Please. Not to mention whoever else may be coming with you on the potential expedition."

"In this world of Orbis, you of all people should know best that few with power and influence should be trusted. Well? Do you accept our terms? There is much for us to do and little time to complete them all if we are to cooperate on this."

Biting down your annoyance, you nod and shake their hand. If you have to endure a little scrutiny to get the help Yashimans need, then so be it.

When you and Clara finalized your message to the Magi Society, they contacted you just before it was about to be sent. Claiming that you have met the accepted "criteria" for an appointment with the Archmages, they happily accepted your request for a meeting regarding their support on lifting the quarantine on Yashima. Or to be more specific, a meeting with only one of them. They strangely specified for you to meet at the closest society building first where they would arrange transport to the meeting room.

That's how you find yourself currently about to be teleported to some unknown location. Obviously not fully trusting such a request, you've come equipped with your bow and quiver, along with a few other trinkets. You were relatively confident you can make it out if this turns out to be some trick, though things are never a sure thing with mages. Watching with trepidation as the glyphs and runes flash with light, you keep calm as the scene suddenly swirls around you in… a surprisingly quiet fashion, with colors and streams of energy shifting in an almost serene manner.

"Please keep calm and stay still as you are transported to your destination. The Magi Society has ensured that the teleportation process is as seamless and comfortable as possible, but they are not liable for anything caused by passengers intentionally disturbing the process."

Ironically enough, the announcement echoing around you almost makes you jolt and disturb the process due to being primed to react to anything suspicious. The very ill-fitting music somehow playing doesn't help either. Removing your hand from your bow and taking deep breaths, you wait and watch the scenery around you. This is not your first time encountering something magical like this so it doesn't quite awe you, but you are somewhat stunned at how smooth the process is. Not even Ophelia could have transported you like this.

Deirdre Reputation Roll(Magi Society): 3d6: 6+6+1 = 13. (13+5(Phenomenal Reputation)-1(Avistan Light Endorsement) = 17) Moderately Strong Success.

Eventually, the swirling colors and mist dissipates, slowly revealing the new room so that you may adjust to it. Taking in everything, you… are somewhat perplexed at what you see. It is a cross between some wooden parlor and workshop with countless dolls, toys, and plushies strewn across the tables and floor. There are bookshelves and tools like in a normal magician's laboratory if you look carefully, but it is overshadowed by the creations here. Stepping off the teleportation platform once its effects have disappeared, the wooden floor creaks in the deathly silent and dark room lit by a single magical light on the ceiling.

"Greetings."

Swiftly turning in the direction of the voice, you… see nothing but more toys staying completely still. Stretching your senses, you almost flinch from the sheer magical energy being emitted from all of them. Pushing past the sensory overload, you manage to narrow in on a single vaguely human doll sitting in a corner surrounded by plush and furry toys, glossy eyes staring emptily at you. Impossibly smooth skin is framed by long flowing green hair perfectly combed and maintained. Simple but well-made robes are all that they wear. The one odd thing that you note though are the tiny cracks surrounding one eye, and the pure black orb within it in stark contrast to the green orb on the other side.

Then, the doll's mouth… "moves".

"Very impressive. Not even experienced magicians find me so quickly."

Their voice echoes and resonates across the room. Despite sounding somewhat ethereal, the intonation and tone of the being is unsettlingly even and exact. It would almost match the automated voices you hear in various announcements if not for the slightly breathy quality to it. Suppressing a shudder, you clear your throat and step forward.

"Would I be correct in assuming you are Archmage Drosselmeyer?"

The doll slowly levitates off the ground, limp arms laying at their sides while their legs dangle in the air. Their bare feet and hands reveal several subtle joints and lines hinting at their nature. As the plushies and their fellow dolls fall to the ground around them, their head ever so slightly tilts.

"Indeed, I have served as an Archmage for quite some time in the Magi Society and currently sit on the council," they confirm. "And you must be Deirdre Pathstrider… I have heard much about you in the past few centuries."

You were nodding along to their words before freezing at their last two. Almost immediately your guard is raised back up as you step back with a hand on your bow. That does not bode well. Any mage researching life-extension magic or immortality is immediately suspect, and you are very quickly realizing why they might have agreed to meet you. You draw an arrow in warning as they float closer towards you, but the doll is undeterred. Their voice, despite being devoid of emotion, still seems as if it is barely holding something back.

"Your skin… is so perfect. Flawless. Ah… even after millennia, you are like a statue… nay, even better… a living, breathing, feeling masterpiece…"

The tip of an arrow presses against their throat.

"Archmage Drosselmeyer. I am uncomfortable with you so close to me. Kindly float back a few meters, now."

The doll stops but does not look away from you. Your grip tightens around the arrow as those terribly empty eyes bore into your own. You know not whether this will kill them, but you are prepared to shred every toy in this workshop to pieces if you have to. It is somewhat commonly accepted wisdom that magicians who sit and focus on matters other than studying magic are often weaker for it, but any mage who has lived this long must have some tricks. Especially within their workshop. You curse, what a terrible situation this is…

"My apologies."

Drosselmeyer floats back to their previous position, still not taking their eyes off you.

"An imperfect being like myself has no right to tarnish such perfection. Pray forgive this wretched thing."

You frown, "That is not the point, Archmage. Just… do not do that again. I have not come here for your 'admiration'."

They finally break eye contact and bow their head.

"Of course, of course. I struggle with... feeling in my current form. It leads to unfortunate situations such as this. There can be no excuse. Let us move on, then."

Holding back a sigh, you retract your arrow and stand up straight.

"Yes, quite," you start. "May I know what the Magi Society's stance is on Yashima, and if they are amenable to my request for their aid and public support?"

Drosselmeyer lifts their head back up unfortunately as they respond, "There is, of course, much interest in exploring what exactly occurred with the Impact. I suspect you may have earned a unanimous vote if not for the… fervent support from the Light. That has raised some petty concerns from those with a grudge against our fellows of the cloth."

You resist groaning. Magic and faith have always been at odds with each other to the detriment of everyone else. You thought Orbis might've outgrown that, but it appears not.

"Fear not. I rallied those of like mind and cast the deciding vote in favor of your request. You have the entire Magi Society's support now, even if some may do so reluctantly."

You blink as you say, "But I did not even send my request yet…"

They float back down to where they once sat and magically levitate everything back to their previous positions.

"We have… a predictive system of sorts for matters such as these. Not to mention that there was already interest in your announcement. More information will be forthcoming in the future, but I hope that this is enough to set your mind at ease. For now, however, I must… rest. The past few days have been rather tiring for me. Stand where you were teleported here to be sent back. My apologies again for my earlier behavior."

Watching as the doll goes limp and still in the corner, as lifeless as the toys around them, you shake your head and return to the platform. Drosselmeyer's unsettling interest in you aside, it seems you have what you wanted from the Magi Society. Hopefully you'll be able to meet with someone else from the society later for discussions

Deirdre Reputation Roll(YRRA): 3d6: 6+2+2 = 10. (10+5(Phenomenal Reputation)+3(Desperate Hope) = 18) Strong Success.

You and Clara decided to contact the YRRA a little later after the initial announcement. The message that you genuinely wanted to lift the quarantine in particular rather than wanting to just support the organization and refugees was deemed too important to muddy the waters with. You shut Clara down when she suggested spending more time to draw a big celebrity however. Any effort to help Yashimans had to have some oversight by Yashiman else unsavory implications of your efforts start taking root.

Besides, you simply cannot countenance not getting in touch with them for the matter of reopening the way to their home. You've known few Yashimans compared to other peoples in your long life, but the ones you befriended would've returned from the dead to beat you into the ground if you ignored their descendants. Rightfully so.

The YRRA have come out in support of you already however. One of the first groups to respond in fact. You imagine that they are especially active in pouncing on what support they can find. A meeting was arranged between the two of you in short order, but since you already had other appointments scheduled due to not knowing their reaction beforehand, it was pushed back a while. They didn't seem to mind however as you are immediately greeted upon arriving at their headquarters. Bowing while expressing their thanks, they lead you to the meeting room.

Entering through a slightly less nondescript door with the name Aoki Junko written in both the Yashiman and Common language labeled on it, you are faced with a very spartan room containing few identifying features. You assume that the YRRA must've been granted this soon after the Impact and their formation, but it still seems a little too bare. As if its occupant just moved in and didn't plan on staying for long.

Speaking of the occupant, the mokujin sitting at the desk quickly stands at your entrance and makes her way towards you. There's not a bit of hesitation as she offers her wooden hand to shake.

"Hello, it's good to meet with you, Ms. Pathstrider," she says in near-perfect Common.

You take her hand and bow slightly while speaking in fluent Yashiman, "No, it is an honor to speak with those who have been fighting for their homeland so long. Would you prefer to speak in your native tongue?"

There is a pause and hint of surprise, but she surprises you back by responding with Common again, "A-ah, I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm fine with continuing our discussion in Common. It'll make certain things easier later."

A little worried you might've inadvertently caused offense, you merely nod as the two of you separate and take your seats. Yashimans usually didn't like to speak in Common as well as having the lowest proficiency in it on average, which is a point of contention with the many refugees streaming into various nations of Orbis. Many are relieved to talk with someone who can speak their mother tongue, but you suppose you shouldn't have assumed.

"We at the YRRA have been keeping track of everything going on since your sudden announcement," she starts. "The attention you've managed to drum up has been quite astonishing to see."

You shake your head, "I've merely shone a light on the issue. I have doubts I could have done this on my own."

"Mmm, yes. It was smart to have the Light back you so early, especially its most… passionate side."

Looking at Aoki carefully, you say, "I apologize for any offense caused by not coordinating with the YRRA beforehand."

She laughs, a slightly bitter tone to it, "No, no. I get it. You wouldn't have gotten nearly the same amount of attention if you had started with us. If we had the ability to pull in the Light and other influential organizations, I suspect the quarantine would have already been lifted. We have no leverage or incentive to offer others."

"This shouldn't be an issue where such things are needed," you counter, frowning.

"It shouldn't, but it is. Perhaps you may have been able to persuade others with your unique reputation and novelty, but it's already been years for us. Everyone has decided to ignore us years ago, but would've tried to use us as weapons against you if we haven't spoken in your favor already."

She sighs, "I'm sorry. Don't get me wrong, we are very grateful for what you are doing. It is just… difficult to see what we've been trying to do for ten years done just like that."

You rest your hands on the desk, "It is not done, Ms. Aoki. The UP has not yet called upon me, and I am reluctant to go forward without the YRRA's support. I realize you have already given it, but is there anything else we need to discuss? I would hear the concerns of the Yashiman people on this matter."

Aoki draws circles with her finger on the desk, "This is mostly a formality, but yes there are a few things we need to hash out. First, you will of course continue to enjoy our public support on this matter, and most are currently satisfied with you leading the effort."

"Most?"

"Just some bitter people, pay no mind to them," she waves it off. "The main things we want are firstly for you to coordinate with us on your messaging and have us present for your potential UP hearing."

"Done."

She nods and adds on, "If the quarantine is lifted, we would like to organize an effort to return as many refugees and volunteers as possible to our home."

This time, you frown slightly, "Are there many?"

"No," she denies. "Enough people to warrant some organization, but I imagine the majority of refugees will be staying here until a safe path to Yashima has been confirmed. This however might represent the last possible chance for us to return home if things do not end well. Some long for it so deeply they are willing to face the danger."

Thinking it over, it isn't too much of a surprise. You never expected to go on an expedition to Yashima without Yashimans. You feel some concern about the idea of people that may not have combat or other related experience coming along, but is it right to refuse those wishing to return home?

"I am open to the idea," you allow. "Though this seems like something we must discuss further…"

Aoki nods, "Of course. I suspect the details won't be hashed out on our side until confirmation of the quarantine lifting is announced."

A brief silence descends upon the room on that note. After a brief hesitation, the mokujin stands up from her seat and steps to the side. Matching her, you prepare to give your farewells, but are stopped short when she suddenly bows before you deeply, her paper-like hair swishing from the swift movement.

"Deirdre Pathstrider. I had and will do everything in my power to reopen the way to Yashima. I long sacrificed everything else in my life to help my fellows. If you hold the key to everything I have been working towards the past ten years, then I shall grasp and turn it with all my might. There is little I may do compared to the people you must surely know, but you will have my eternal debt and gratitude nonetheless if you succeed."

Slightly taken aback, you watch as she stiffly rises from her bow to stand up straight, looking up into your eyes.

"May the sun rise on Yashima once more."

You have reached the point where now everyone with an opinion on the Yashima quarantine has been speaking about it. Clara says that every news outlet and "podcast" is talking and debating the topic. Speaking to any one organization probably won't do much more at this point, especially when you feel like you've spoken to just about everyone you can. This is the time to target some specific nations on the UP Council.

But… there is one last thing you want to check up on. You put off meeting with business and corporations to avoid any of their bad name from tarnishing the cause, especially after the mixed reaction from the Light. Clara is right however that you can't just ignore them. They are simply too powerful and influential, and you worry what they might do without you knowing. The two of you have been combing through some of the companies that have contacted you since the announcement, but you just can't seem to make a decision on which to meet with.

DC 15:
Deirdre Intelligence Roll: 3d6: 4+6+5 = 15. (15+2(Decent Intelligence) = 17) Great Success!

There has been something bothering you though. You don't quite remember which one it was, but one of the businesses name's seemed to ring a bell. A distant memory of helping a struggling alerion merchant some decades ago in Avista rises to the surface, but you aren't sure of the details. Was she the founder of one of these companies? Going through the list of names again, your eyes widen as you recognize one that you initially dismissed, as well a vaguely familiar logo. They seem to be…

[] …a manufacturing, electronics, and information technology company
Responsible for much of the technology that many in Orbis own, including the tablet in your pocket right now. They have made great strides in developing advanced devices, software, and magitech, especially after their acquisition of several Yashiman technicians. A pioneer of still new fields of study, they have the potential to help reintroduce certain technologies they must've surely lost at this point as well as reconnecting them with the rest of the world. The company would also be greatly interested in rediscovering any lost, valuable technology as well…

[] …an energy and environmental company
Renowned for their efficient and clean energy production, this company seems to have cracked the code on how to power modern industry and society without wreaking havoc on the environment. With the most advanced extraction and refining facilities in Orbis, none can match their sheer importance to the stability of the world. With experience in maintaining infrastructure in various nations, they would surely be of great help in restoring and rebuilding the broken remains of Yashima. Their great knowledge of the inner workings of magic and energy that has led them to success even in the Mana Scar may lend them unique insights in the strange miasma now surrounding Yashima…

[] …a transportation, shipping, and distribution company
It somewhat boggles your mind that a company like this exists and is so powerful, but it seems to offer a widely known service that everyone may use to order anything online and have it shipped to their home. Wealthy and with connections to a wide variety of other businesses and organizations, they would probably be the most helpful in actually getting the resources Yashima needs transported there. The trip there will surely be dangerous, and you are unsure how much the expedition will be able to bring. This company will ensure that at the very least the Yashimans there will have a little of everything they might need to survive. After all, they always "deliver on time no matter the circumstances" apparently, and they might appreciate the big PR win in proving that.

[] …something else (Write-In)
If you have another idea that may be more helpful in your mind than these options, feel free to write one down. It'll need to be approved by me though, and it can't be some mega-corporation that does everything perfectly.

[X] ...an energy and environmental company - 9 votes

1d6 roll for how much the current CEO and company recognizes you: 1
Barely remembers and recalls you.

It turns out that meeting with a corporation's leadership isn't something anyone can just do whenever they wish to. After reaching out to Lumen Corp, you spoke with a representative and made your case. To their credit, the employee seemed attentive and interested, and promised you that her higher-ups will likely approve of what you've both discussed.

Her promise is soon fulfilled as you walk through the automatic doors of the main headquarters of Lumen. Like most buildings of its nature, it's a sleek, shiny tower of glass and steel. It distinguishes itself however by the faint glow and hum of several long lines running down its side. Despite its visibility, you can't quite tell if it has a set color, perhaps a faint yellow or blue. The energy they are so known for however courses through the building, practically oozing mana to your senses. You don't feel uncomfortable or jittery at all despite the presence of so much. A testament to Lumen's mastery of energy.

It's still difficult to wrap your head around. Of course, the concept of things needing energy or "fuel" in order to function has always existed in some form. There was no end to magic rituals being performed with sacrifices and other catalysts, and knowledge of mana or "spiritual energies" made its way throughout Kiengir early on. Not to mention the more mundane nature of forges, certain mechanisms, or simply the need to eat.

But using and containing energy on this scale without rampant mana corruption? The mastering of a force so many have worshiped and philosophized about into powering light bulbs and toasters all over the world? It feels both underwhelming and staggering at the same time. Somehow the great magical incidents of the past aimed at destroying or ruling a kingdom seem so pedestrian in comparison. A thing of the past where the imagination of different possibilities were so much smaller and narrower.

It makes you feel… you're not certain. The only thing you are sure about however is that this is not what you were expecting when you saved that downtrodden alerion being assaulted by some thugs. With her dusty, ruined clothes and feathers in a mess, her already ordinary features didn't make her stand out in your mind. Perhaps you should've remembered the determined look in her eyes even after being beaten as she gave you her business card and asked for your name. You quickly forgot about her after helping her in a few more matters and only just learned she is still alive recently.

Shaking off your musings, you enter through another door opened by the person guiding you there. The interior of the building is as sleek and clean as the exterior, with some unique decorations containing their product. Flags, icons, drawings, and even animated displays were shown entirely with the strange energy. The office you walk into however is entirely devoid of any of it, a relatively "old-fashioned" office with many personal touches and bookcases resting against the wall. A wide window looks over the city, the beautiful view the main focus of the room.

"Ah, Pathstrider! I've seen you a lot in the news recently."

Looking away from the window towards the voice, you see an alerion who you estimate to be entering middle-age soon. Instead of a suit and tie however, he seems to be wearing a colorful, tropical shirt along with some shorts. His feathers are dyed a myriad of colors, and it's only the fact that he's sitting at the desk that tells you that he is the one you've come to meet. That, and the rather intricate wards you manage to sense around the room. At the very least, this CEO seems to take his security seriously.

You smile thinly as you take a seat, "It has been rather hectic as of late. A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Meitner."

The alerion waves his hand as he opens a drawer on his desk and pulls out a bottle, "Oh, just call me Ohm. I'm not one for formalities. Care for a drink, by the by?"

That's rather strange, you think. From what you remember, his mother was rigid and unfailing in her decorum, even at her lowest.

"Then call me Deirdre," you respond, chasing that errant thought away. "And thank you, but I am fine."

"Ah, your loss then. This is a fine, vintage wine I acquired from a good friend of mine. One of the few vices I've allowed myself to have."

You nod, "An expensive one, I'm sure."

He laughs a little too loudly, almost spilling some of the wine he's pouring into his glass, "Oh it is, it is! But I'm sure you've drunk even finer ones than this! What were the drinks of ancient Kemet like, I wonder?"

"Not as pleasant as you might imagine. There were some unique drinks however with certain ingredients you can no longer obtain, as well as infusion techniques lost to the ages…"

Ohm sighs, "Ah, if only my money could let me go back in time, huh? Perhaps I coulda made a name for myself in the alcohol industry instead!"

Chuckling without any humor behind it, you resist the urge to sink into your chair and groan. With every other group, you've been able to come to an understanding of each other's position and perspective quickly before starting the discussion. Each of them had a reason or incentive to back you in this. This person? You don't even know for sure if he, his shareholders, the board of directors, or all of them have some ulterior motive for contacting you.

Yet you can't afford to alienate him, for his company has the capability to help rebuild Yashima in the long term after the expedition. It is unlikely for him to have any moral obligation to help the Yashimans, however, so avoiding any missteps that might trip some oddity of his is critical. You exchange a few more pleasantries with him, drawing on long-forgotten lessons and habits you've discarded after your recent years of solitude. It was lucky that Sumeri was relatively free of such things, for you have never been good at this. Change is difficult for even normal older people, and such a natural aversion to small talk is hard to overcome with all your years holding it.

"Ah, I've been rambling on for too long! I suppose you're pecking at the bit to discuss what we're meeting here for, hm?" Ohm says this cheerily, yet you can detect him straightening his shoulders and his eyes focusing as he speaks.

You nod, steepling your hands and leaning forward. The real battle starts now.

Deirdre Charisma Roll: 3d6: 4+2+4 = 10 (10+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+1(Suits Company Objectives)-2(Unwise Investment)= 13) Bare Success

"It's been a pleasure speaking with you," you lie, putting all the earnest charm you've learned from others into your expression. "But time waits for no one."

"Indeed, time is precious. For most anyways," he adds in that last part casually and continues before you can interject. "So! Yashima. A great tragedy what happened there. Did you know? We've actually been doing some work around there. The miasma surrounding that place messes with the energy fueling all the ships and aircraft patrolling it, you see."

You raise an eyebrow, "I was unaware. That seems important to discuss for a potential expedition there…"

He stares at you for a bit before saying, "Yes. That's something I'm quite worried about. As an organization with experience in that environment, we've learned to be careful there. The Yashimans have my sympathy, but things appear to be going a little fast, don't you think? Something like this risks the loss of many assets, time, and of course, people. If it fails, there won't be a next time."

"It has already been more than a decade. I say that this has been much too slow," you retort, peering into his eyes.

Ohm raises his hand, "I know. And there have been reasons for that, even if some are more dubious than others. Just as there are reasons you are pushing so hard and forcing everyone's hand by going regardless of any objections, right? The fact remains that this movement you've jump-started has some worrying implications for us, even if we lean more in its favor."

"Those being?"

"Deir, can I call you that? I assume that you've never run something like a business, so I'll put it simply. Let me just say that despite all the… fearruffling of our power, even a company as large as ours can't do whatever they want. There are many competing interests, and weakness is quickly dove on."

You furrow your eyebrows, "Are… you implying that reconnecting Yashima with Kiengir is not in Lumen Corp's interest?"

"Not exactly," he says, tapping a talon on the table. "I am leading into the fact that Lumen Corp occupies a very unique position in this world that gives us a great deal of influence. However, it is a spot we maintain by keeping a precarious balance where even the slightest misstep can lead to us being toppled thrown from our perch."

"How is that so?" You ask.

"We sell to everybody, Deir. So long as we provide clean, efficient energy at reasonable prices, everyone is happy to allow us to maintain our hold on this market. The moment we start causing a stir, having some difficulties, or simply start showing interest in matters outside our 'expertise'? Well, let's just say it isn't necessarily hard to extract energy."

You shake your head, "Is Lumen Corp afraid of competition?"

He laughs, a short croak of incredulity, "We? Maybe a little. It is more that everyone else should be afraid of greedy, opportunistic vultures wrecking the environment and causing accidents 'competing' with us. Deirdre, Deirdre. The energy we create is more than just the method and formula. It's the infrastructure, our strict protocols, standards, and our long experience in dealing with unexpected difficulties. Without those things, even the most well-intentioned and intelligent entrepreneur will encounter problems."

Ohm crosses his arms, the feathers of his wings on full display as he scrutinizes you, "I was content to wait and see. Maybe offer something for the ships taking the expedition to Yashima if the quarantine did get lifted. We do care about the environment after all, and it'd look good to show off our expertise. The risks were just too high for anything else. My… mother spoke to me though."

You lean back, tense. Despite what he said appearing reassuring, his lowered voice and rigid posture tells you that may not necessarily be a good thing.

He shakes his head, "I've rarely ever seen her so passionate about anything other than her work. She still has a lot of pull here even if she isn't the CEO anymore, so it wasn't as if I could ignore her. Besides, I'll admit I was curious to meet the one who my mother felt indebted to. See for myself what you're all about and if you're really as you portray yourself."

"And your verdict?"

"I'm still thinking," he says as he shrugs. "But so far, I haven't seen anything objectionable. There's a lot of factors and conflicting issues I have to think of, but I do think your cause is just and that you seem to be genuine. I respect that, as Ohm Meitner and CEO of Lumen Corp."

You incline your head, "I appreciate this. Does this mean…?"

Ohm sighs, this time looking genuinely pained, "I would love to go to bat for you, but like I said, it's difficult for us to initiate things like this. We have the pull to really help you out, but that doesn't come without a cost either. Despite what everyone may say when an outage occurs or when our prices increase, my mother and I care a lot about getting clean, good energy out there. Making sure the world doesn't start blowing up with pollution everywhere like a few decades ago before my mother started this whole thing. That's something she and I agree on, since no one wins if we start slipping, you see?"

Pursing your lips, you lean back and take in the alerion's expression. Despite his casual and somewhat flippant attitude from earlier, you can see how focused he's suddenly become. Leaning forward and staring right at your eyes, you can see only determination in his eyes as he sets the values he upholds in front of you and dares you to go against them. Meeting his gaze, you get back up and open your mouth—

"That being said, you'll have our backing if things turn out the way I think they'll do."

—and shut it back closed, blinking in confusion.

He laughs, "Oh, that's a good expression! I'll have a look at it in the cameras later."

"I'd appreciate an explanation, Meitner," you say, an unamused expression on your face.

"Oh, already getting called by my last name, I'm hurt," he spreads his hands out in a placating fashion. "Just because Lumen Corp won't be able to help you with the UP, doesn't mean we can't help with Yashima."

Things finally click as you start connecting everything he's said so far, "You want to ride the momentum of our victory if the vote passes."

The alerion clicks with his mouth as he points at you, "You've got it! If you can get there without us having to ruffle some feathers, that'll make things a lot easier for us. You'll have everything we can give, and everyone's happy that we can probably get a return on this investment. With all the attention and pressure of a passed UP vote and us making our move, it'll probably lead to other companies trying to worm their way in too."

"Will that not appear as if you are also only trying to help when pressured?" You say, crossing your arms and trying not to look too accusatory. "It does not match with your concerns about your reputation…"

He shakes his head, "We're a company, Pathstrider. People expect us to be opportunistic. My mother founded Lumen Corp with good intentions, but she knew there would have to be some sacrifices for the security and benefits a corporation like this can bring for her goals."

"Besides," he says, making a few gestures that suddenly bring up a display above the desk. "There are ways we can play both games without risking our plumage. It costs nothing to make a few posts indirectly supporting the cause. You just won't get anything more than that for now."

"So," Ohm Meitner says, a strangely bitter smile on his face. "Are you willing to deal with this bird? I don't like throwing stones at others, but at least I won't be making you pay after…"

It frustrates you to only be given a verbal promise of later aid, but you realize that this is probably the best you'll be able to secure. Lumen Corp is a business, not a sophontarian organization despite the aid they lend to them. If even such selfless groups of people have been reluctant to touch the Yashima issue, then it makes less sense to expect a company to take such a risk. Even with all those rationalizations however, it's a struggle to keep a calm expression as you nod in agreement.

"Deal."

As you scroll through the chirps and posts of support on your tablet, you find yourself shaking your head in bewilderment. It still hasn't quite sunk in that with the press of a few buttons, millions of people can see what you write. You know many figures in the past who would've done terrible things to have something like this at their fingertips. The most intricate and powerful magical fields and forms of communications back then cannot even begin to touch the scale of this.

But now is not the time for that. While the meeting with the CEO of Lumen did not go as planned, you have at least guaranteed the full support of the company if you manage to gain UP approval. For that, you'll need to start targeting specific countries on the current UP Council. Clara and others you've discussed with all have different opinions on this.

Your manager advises you to target the "swing votes" in Tarshish, Sumeri, and Sindhu, trusting that Avista and Vragzarg are sufficiently supported. Others have suggested securing your votes for those already in favor before making a big push for one or two others. Several think a balanced approach is best, targeting several nations in particular that you might be able to help convince. You believe it possible to try and stir up support in Zhonghua and Wilwatikta, as securing either one of their votes will make the voting process much smoother, but few are optimistic about it. Receiving a unanimous vote in your favor would do a lot for the expedition and unlock many of the UP's resources and options, but spreading yourself too thin for it can be a fatal mistake.

Clara joked that this was like the Avistan elections that recently went on. While you aren't trying to take political office, it feels as if the weight of the people's opinions are pressing down onto you. You start feeling an iota of sympathy for the people who have to think about this every day of their lives. Only a little bit though.

One thing that isn't fully clear to you is exactly how the UP will handle the vote. Will they vote only on lifting quarantine and nothing else, or would it include sending direct aid to the nation as well? It might make sense that the two issues would be two separate votes, but it isn't as simple as that. The quarantine does more than just block access from the continent as it deals with various threats coming from Yashima as well. Avoiding the mingling of threats from either side is admittedly a rather intelligent decision, and you doubt any discussion regarding the quarantine will involve just removing it.

Perhaps the vote could be on simply allowing the expedition to go through, but such a large organization rarely handles exceptions and small details like that well. That's also something you can probably do anyways without the UP. What you want is their direct support and official recognition. After running yourself ragged trying to think of every possibility, you eventually settle on assuming that there will be a single general vote on whether to take action with Yashima or not, as it will be the most difficult to convince the majority of the council on.

Turning off your tablet and closing your eyes, you start running through your plan. It's time for you to take the final steps of the campaign you've been running.

This will be a plan vote. Choose three options from below you will personally visit and focus primarily on. Then choose one option for you and everyone advising you to focus on online/indirectly to have either a chance of a positive event or at least learn more. Since there is a possibility of each option affecting another, make sure to keep a general strategy in mind when making your plan.

[] Avista
Many Avistans, at least in public social media, seem to be in favor of reconnecting with Yashima and sending aid there. The superpower has a long history of interventionism and pushing the envelope on many issues, for better or worse, so you think it shouldn't be difficult to convince them. They even had a special relationship with Yashima prior to the Impact, with both of them working on the Lost Continent. Still, it might be good to do what you can to secure their support rather than assuming it even if there might be opportunities later in the UP for them. There's also the possibility that speaking with certain influential people there might gain unexpected support elsewhere, as their influencers and celebrities have far more global appeal than most.

[] Vragzarg
A temporary member of the council. Vragzarg has been a firm Avistan ally ever since the World War, and the two nations bordering each other have often worked together on several projects and initiatives. It should be said however that out of all the Avistan "puppets" as detractors of the superpower often say, Vragzarg has disagreed and clashed with the nation the most. Cultural differences and contrasting values have often made them quite unpredictable and frustrating to Avistan politicians. In this case, they would have much less interest and capability to send aid to Yashima even if they generally support sophontarian efforts. Their vote is not guaranteed, yet you do still have some connections there. You were once proclaimed an eternal friend of the orcish nation… securing their vote before the UP hearing would be incredibly beneficial.

[] Sumeri
Sumeri has been the site of many magical and otherworldly incidents throughout history, dealing with them even now as evidenced by your most recent visit. They may be more sympathetic than most to Yashima's plight, but like Fatoumata says, more reluctant to actually take action about it. This reflects their sophontarian record, as they are quite eager to support anything benefiting them while bieng much more skittish about everything else. You are seen rather favorably however by many Sumerians currently, and spending more time around different parts of the divided nation might bolster that popularity even further. Then again, it's possible you've done all you can already, and that it's unlikely you can do much with all the different voices and players in the nation.

[] Sindhu
Sindhu is a unique case. Having long been a center of civilization with many different cultures and peoples, they emerged from the World War a rising great power despite being on the losing side. They've had an interesting relationship with Yashima, far enough away to not conflict with them much but close enough to have traded with and influenced them. Still, it's difficult to gauge the general opinion of Sindhu on the Yashima issue and various sophontarian matters. Will they wish to compete with Avista in making their influence known in Yashima, or will they take a stand against the superpower they've often vocally been against? Do they wish to snub Zhonghua on this, or will they prefer tightening their bond with them? Is there something that might benefit Sindhu itself with this initiative? You don't know, and perhaps it is time to find out.

[] Tarshish
From what you've seen, Tarshish is mostly apathetic towards Yashima. They historically have little to do with each other even during Tarshish's imperial days, and the once great power has always been more concerned with continental affairs. You don't know how they'll vote, but you find it difficult to see them pushing very strongly in favor of helping the nation. Perhaps you can change that, with some creative use of rhetoric appealing to them? Despite their fall from grace, Tarshish is a powerhouse with many institutions and resources within their borders, many of which support sophontarian efforts. They would be a bit more open to listening to a charismatic, authoritative figure that has ties with them, especially if you were to go there yourself and meet with other influential people there.

[] Zhonghua
Zhonghua and Yashima have long had a somewhat mixed relationship. You'd hesitate to call them historical enemies, but none can deny the many conflicts between the two. In more recent history, while Yashima did not officially join the World War, there have been several reported sightings of their involvement, and there is some evidence of them sabotaging Zhonghua and other nations. With the influx of Yashiman refugees after the Impact as one of the closest countries to the island nation, the relationship between the people of Zhonghua and Yashima have been heated and resentful.

Still, there is an undeniable connection between the two, and you know that it hasn't always been negative. Perhaps there is some way to tap into that if you can find something, or perhaps some practical argument you can present to them. Zhonghua is different from other nations due to their emperor wielding so much power, and from what you know of him, he seems to be a bit more lax and open-minded than his predecessors. You don't know if that will lead to him wanting to support Yashima however, or if he even cares about this. His opinion, even if not voiced, can be very damning.

[] Wilwatikta
A temporary member of the council. As the closest seafaring power and island nation, Yashima and Wilwatikta have a complicated relationship. While there have had almost no outright wars between them, they have long competed for dominance over the seas and ocean. Similarly to Zhonghua, they have pointed fingers at Yashima for their interventions in the World War, in which Wilwatikta sided with Zhonghua and Avista. They have less refugees than Zhonghua and even other nations, but there is still discontent over the Yashiman population there. In short, while they may not be as loud about their distaste for Yashima as Zhonghua, theirs is a long grudge that has rarely changed.

But... things can always change. The people of Wilwatikta are only getting younger, and with each year that passes with Yashima in desolation, the memories of past conflicts start to fade. There was even a recent fascination with certain Yashiman customs and media, and an uptick in chartiable and sophontarian efforts even if mostly local. Perhaps there is something there if you approach with the right angle? You aren't certain, but it might be a good idea to explore the situation in more detail anyways.

Example Vote:
[] Plan Blah the Blah:
-[] Choice 1 of 3
-[] Choice 2 of 3
-[] Choice 3 of 3
--[] Bonus Choice

AN:
Sorry for the very long wait. I got sucked into playing POE2, and this chapter was very difficult to write for me. I think the next few chapters will be a bit easier, but not sure if they'll necessarily be quick either. We get to meet our first CEO, and I hope you guys liked the conversation here. As for the social media posts, try not to look too much at the numbers and dates. It's very difficult to say what is considered incredibly viral and popular in an entirely different world. Just know that Deirdre has accrued a lot of attention for herself and that there's a lot of different organizations giving their own support.

I wanted to write replies to the other chirps, but got way too tired aha. Maybe I'll edit them in later(along updating the numbers) but they ultimately aren't too important. Also wanted to write something in Japanese for the YRRA to say, but wasn't quite sure on a proper and accurate thing to say aha. The vote was originally going to be a regular line vote, but I felt like that wouldn't fit the vibe of what's happening+as I said each vote may or may not effect the other. Hope you guys enjoyed, and feel free to ask any questions if you have them! *goes to sleep for next 12 hours*

Deirdre Reputation Roll(Vragzarg): 3d6: 5+3+5 = 13 (13+5(Phenomenal Reputation) = 18). Strong Success.

"You didn't have to come with me, you know."

Grog, your old friend, flashes a grin at you, "I hafta see how this is going to go. Besides, we commandos stick together."

Sighing, you nonetheless can't help a smile forming on your face as you walk through the busy streets of Vragzarg. If there's something you appreciate about modern times, it's how easy it is to keep in touch with distant friends. Whenever a group you're part of has either accomplished its goals or grown weary of travel, there was always an implicit understanding beneath the partings that you would never see each other again.

It is a pain that etches itself into your being, leaving permanent marks. You know nothing of what happened with the vast majority of your past companions, whether they found happiness or met an unfortunate fate. Whether it's worse than actually meeting with them again, old and weathered, or meeting a family member of theirs who informs you of their death... you're unsure. Whatever the case, you know one thing for sure.

It is nice to be with Grog once more.

"And itsa good excuse to use some of my vacation days!"

And with Yaza too. The ogre walked with Grog hand in hand, towering over the both of you. Dressed in sweatpants with a vest over a shirt with skulls and instruments on it, she cut an intimidating figure despite the clear signs of age on her form. Behind the scowl and lines on her face though, you can see the energy she seems to be building up the longer the three of you spend time together.

"I thought you took joy in running children ragged?"

She laughs, "That gets old even for me, Twig. Sides', it'll be good to see who's keeping in shape or not. Damned brats always findin' every excuse to slack off and go melt their minds on a screen, tch! I'll come back secretly and give em' all hell."

"I see," you say, nodding seriously. "I recall Grog saying something earlier about a team of yours…?"

Yaza's eyes light up, and the fierce ogre practically starts gushing about the team she's helping coach at her school. Listening as you observe your surroundings, you take a moment to soak in everything here. Vragzarg… to someone who has lived in the times when orcs and ogres were seen as little more than brutes and savages, it's simply astounding to see a nation like this. All around you, orcs and ogres walk around and go about their business like any other race would in other cities. Centuries—no, millennia of people seeing them as pillagers and destroyers, and it turns out in the end that they are not so different from other peoples.

The bloody history of this region of Kiengir will never truly go away, but it has always long been a question of how much a person's disposition is influenced by their birth or environment. Flawed tests and anecdotal evidence always circulated that question, and to this day is discussed by even peoples of the same ancestry. In your long life, you've seen many complicated situations where people have to wrestle with themselves, but in the end they all seem to go through a similar pattern through their journey of self-discovery.

A pattern which the elves did not match, clearly.

Shaking your head of such thoughts for now, you do see a few things to show that the orcs have not forgotten their roots completely. Two of them seem to be play-wrestling behind a fence with a small crowd cheering them on. Loud and rowdy celebrations take place between several small groups of orcs partaking in various activities, mostly drinking. While orcs nowadays seem to be wearing a lot more clothing, the amount of team clothing from various sports seem to indicate a strong interest remains for group physical activities.

Many eye you three with interest. You suppose it isn't every day that they see a dangerous looking elderly orc and ogre strolling about with some strange figure looking back at them with really weird eyes while carrying a bow. Grog and Yaza move past them all without a care, as if expecting others to part way for them. And they did. The old couple made their way past everyone with a grace beyond your own, as it has always been your way to slide past people without them noticing.

"—and I'm relieved that kid's finally starting to get it… oh, they decidin' to meet us out here, eh?"

Yaza interrupts herself as you three look to see what has caught her eye. In the distance, you see a group of suited-up people striding towards you with wide grins on their faces. Cries of each other's names ring out, and you join in with an energetic wave as you see familiar faces. Less than you remember…. but still more than you realized were still around. In the past, there were unavoidable factors that led you to never seeing your friends again. Now? There's no excuse, and you won't make the same mistake again in not catching up with them.

The Doom Commandos have gathered together again for one more mission.

Deirdre Reputation Roll(Zhonghua): 3d6: 4+6+2 = 12 (12+5(Phenomenal Reputation) = 17). Moderately Strong Success.

"It's good that you've decided to come here. Zhonghua has been in an uproar ever since your announcement. So much anger, yet, you've given many people hope here."

"I'm glad," you reply back in her language as you survey the area around you. "Regardless of anything else, helping those affected by the Impact has always been my primary goal with this expedition."

Ten years since the disaster struck Yashima has given its refugees time to come to terms with their situation. Not nearly enough to ever forget, but there is only so long that they can stay in refugee camps. The Yashimans recovered quickly despite various difficulties and formed enclaves where most refugees in Zhonghua gathered. Friction with the sudden influx of Yashimans sparked various controversies that have earned a scrutinizing eye from the UP and others, but there have been some places dealing with it more successfully than others.

Bai Xiaoqian is a popular… figure of sorts who is difficult to define. Part "influencer", part content creator, and part community icon, she is a native kitsune of Zhonghua, or as they are known here, the huren. There are several competing theories on the origins of the kitsune, yet the fact that they predominantly lived in the islands of Yashima for most of recorded history is undeniable. A minority with a long and complicated history in Zhonghua, Xiaoqian's parents and other kitsune gathered support in their city to welcome and integrate the Yashiman refugees. With how well built this enclave is with its fusion of Yashiman and Zhonghua architecture, they were clearly successful.

She nods, "Though I am proud that we have helped build a home for those who lost theirs, we can't remove their sadness and longing. It is a shame. There have been many black-bellied voices proclaiming their support and promising to take action on Yashima, but nothing has come of it. All I could hope for were for the more… nationalist voices not to gain power."

You incline your head, "Does the Jade Emperor have a stance on this?"

"The Just and Honorable Jade Emperor has offered His condolences to the Yashiman people and opened Zhonghua to the many refugees left after the Impact, for which I am grateful for," Xiaoqian says carefully, her posture becoming more closed and rigid as her white tail stops swishing behind her. "None will dare go against His decree directly, but the 'how' of accepting the Yashimans is left up for interpretation by local officials. I am a loyal subject to the Son of Heaven, but there are many beneath His Imperial Majesty who do not share His magnanimous point of view."

Noting the guarded tone the kitsune takes, you simply nod and avoid pressing her on it. It is always complicated to speak to those under more authoritative regimes about their governments, especially when they also have a public image and position. Still, from what she said, you gather that the Jade Emperor is either unsure of how to handle the refugee problem or unable to directly go against those who want a harsher solution. Perhaps both. It bodes well at least that there isn't a complete denial from him, however, as that leaves a possibility for Zhonghua to vote in favor of aiding Yashima.

Xiaoqian maintains her smile throughout this, and she happily waves and greets people on the streets. The two of you agreed to a meeting publicly and have several photos already uploaded on both your social media accounts of the both of you in the Yashiman enclaves. While you two aren't swarmed by the Yashimans here, there are many taking the chance to see the one who has promised a way to their home. Grateful smiles, cautious but optimistic nods, and several children eagerly approaching you were just a few of the small gestures of appreciation shown to you in your time here.

It is when you are finally approaching the venue for a meeting and speech however that you and Xiaoqian come to a skittering stop. A jade yuren waits silently by the entrance, his presence alone scaring off any coming to hear you speak. Dressed in the robes and finery of a courtier of the Jade Emperor's court, he remains completely still as you and Xianqian resume walking. She bows deeply before him when she reaches him, but you stare at the courtier evenly.

The Jade Emperor seems to have made a move. Time to see what it is about.

Deirdre Reputation Roll(Wilwatikta): 3d6: 3+5+5 = 13 (13+5(Phenomenal Reputation) = 18). Strong Success.

Wilwatikta has always occupied a unique role in history. While there has been a certain distance and isolation like other island nations or kingdoms, they've long intertwined themselves with continental affairs. They boast a diverse and unique culture with millennia of history behind it because of that, maintaining both an adventurous but very traditional culture at the same time. Regardless of how few foreigners truly understand the nation however, it remains a location where many travel to for business or pleasure.

That's how you find yourself at a loud and booming party with drinks and other substances circulating the room as crowds of people of all races and backgrounds dance and mingle with each other. Correction, a "charity event", though it doesn't seem so different from a regular celebration. You made a perfunctory speech and posed with the organizers of the event before having to endure the onslaught of random strangers coming to meet you after.

Though you hardly keep up with celebrity culture, Clara gave you a crash course on famous and popular figures in recent times before you started all this. You vaguely recognize a few of them, with one in particular getting very drunk with how many drinks are piling up near her, but celebrities from Wilwatitka weren't high on Clara's list as an Avistan.

"Not enjoying the party?"

You turn to see a batu dressed in a very… colorful suit with a myriad of decorative imagery on the light blue fabric and glass in hand. His stony skin looks aged and weathered, but is prepared in such a way that there seems to be a story behind every chip and scratch on it. Of course, you know that the batu's biology isn't literally akin to a rock, but you admit that Budi knows how to present himself.

"I've never done well in settings like these, I'm afraid."

He chuckles as he stops to stand beside you, his gravelly voice rumbling through his body, "Truth be told, I'm not fond of it either. Unfortunately, these gatherings are more important than most believe for people like us."

You raise an eyebrow at him, "Do you consider me among your number?"

"Of course," he says, staring back at you. "You're a public figure now. Perhaps you are not a traditional celebrity, but it doesn't change the fact that you exist in a different world now from most."

Smiling wryly at him, you raise your glass to your mouth before saying, "I think I've been living in such worlds for a while now."

He pauses for a moment before nodding, "Yes, I can see that. Still, I don't think that makes me wrong."

"I suppose so."

The two of you fall into a silence as you sip at your drinks and observe the events around you. Budi was a famous musician in Wilwatikta that gained popularity not too long after the World War. He's said to be the father of pop music in the island nation, and he has a significant global following as well. Branching into other fields such as acting later in life, Budi remains an influential figure in the celebrity scene who many seek to win support and advice from.

He surprisingly reached out to you after your announcement, and your picture together on Swiftfclip went viral in Wilwatikta. You still aren't quite certain of his motivations however. The batu didn't seem like an evil man, and he's contributed significantly to various sophontarian and charity organizations, but he wasn't especially vocal on the Yashima issue beforehand.

"It's a good thing, what you're doing," he says suddenly.

"Oh?"

Budi stares into his glass, a wistful expression on his face, "Yes, I've always—"

He stops suddenly, looking up at something. Following his gaze, you catch a group of suited up batu with sunglasses on all of their faces approaching the two of you. In the center, a naga woman strides towards you with a confident smile on her face. Looking at Budi in your periphery, you don't see fear, but there is a bit of tenseness entering his frame as he stares back at the woman. It seems the party is about to get interesting, whether you want it to or not…

Deirdre Fame Roll(Avista): 3d6: 4+3+5 = 12 (12+4(Great Fame) = 16) Moderately Strong Success

"...so, what are you going to do if the UP doesn't vote in favor of lifting the quarantine?"

You see yourself stare straight at the camera as you say without hesitating:

"I'll do what I must. There are many courageous enough to make the journey regardless of whether the UP says so. Despite what some might believe, they do not control the waters nor are they the sole authority of this world. It's time to remind the people of Orbis the change they can affect and that the status quo is not as immutable as they might believe."

"Those are some spicy words, Deirdre! Are you a critic of the UP and its policies?"

"Not particularly, no. The UP is a genuinely miraculous organization that I never imagined might exist. Even the strongest alliances in history between peoples were not so optimistic as the UP. Like all organizations however, they have their deficiencies, and are prone to being victims of their own inertia and desire for stability. I am offering them to be on the right side of history, and to prove that their mission to be a global institution upholding sophontarian values is true on its most difficult test."

You pause the video at that moment, feeling a little strange watching yourself be so animated in the interview you had. Visions of the past back then were usually more grand affairs, or some malicious being trying to influence you in some way. Simply having a device that can display moments like these, one that most people in Orbis have these days, is something you struggle wrapping your head around. The Information Age indeed…

Regardless, Clara says that this interview with a supposed popular figure that you can't seem to find any credentials or expertise for on YourVid was a smashing success. News outlets all over the world are discussing it, and your passion and sincerity comes through very well. Of course, taking such a hard stance has alienated a few who believe that taking a more moderate approach is best, but you doubt such people would have supported you anyways.

Leaning back on your chair, you rub your face and sigh. It has been a hectic few weeks. Sitting alone in a hotel room with your hair down and in comfortable clothes, you wish you can remain like this for a moment longer. It is one thing to travel out of wanderlust or for a particular goal, but this sort of frantic and constant moving around various nations doesn't resonate with you the same way. You have no idea if what you're doing is helping the cause in any way nor have you really been taking in the sights and getting to know the people.

UP Roll: 3+5+1 (9+5(Phenomenal Reputation)+3(The Light's Support)+2(ISO/NGO Support)+1(Magi Society Support)+2(YRRA Support)+3(Vragzarg Support)+1(Avistan Support)+1(Removed Certain Opposition) = 27) ??? Success

And the UP hasn't responded yet. For such a normally vocal organization, they've been suspiciously silent. At this point, there's nothing more you can do but wait. You've caught the world's eye for a brief moment of time, and now it is up to the UP on whether they will accept your challenge. Clara assures you that it is extremely unlikely that they won't at least let you speak to the UP Assembly and Council, but all that does is make you wonder why they're taking so much time.

Speaking of Clara, you've just noticed she's been trying to call you. Blinking, you accidentally click on something and see you missed at least four calls. Are you really that out of sorts? Spending a few seconds to reorient yourself and figure out what to press on the screen, you accept the call and raise it to your—

"Deirdre! They sent a letter! The UP finally invited you to speak to the Council!"

Standing up with alert eyes, a wide smile forms on your face. Finally! The time of constant meetings and interviews have come to an end. Now there is only one more confrontation you have to prepare for. Moving around the room while talking excitedly with Clara, you begin to make your final preparations…

There is one more meeting however a day before the date given by the UP. Apparently some individual visited the office Clara worked at in person to ask for a meeting. They were shifty and vague on the questions Clara asked of them, but your manager managed to get them to leave by promising to get in touch with them later. She called you about it soon after, and though she was suspicious, the alerion said that she was never threatened in any way.

Still, you told her to accept the meeting on your behalf so that you can investigate the individual and organization they're part of further. You could tell Clara was worried despite her trying to put on a brave and serious face, so you wanted to see if it was something problematic or not. The woman you got on call with deftly evaded your questions however, and you reluctantly agreed to the instructions given to you on meeting with them.

That's how you find yourself entering a dingy, crowded bar with your trusty beanie and unassuming clothes on. After sitting at a random table and ordering a drink, you prepare yourself for a wait. You don't see anything off after looking around at the people drinking here, but you remain alert anyways. It would be easy to act normally in a setting like this.

"Hey there, can I buy you a drink?"

Blinking in surprise, you turn to see a merman who somehow managed to make his way towards you without you noticing him. Dressed in a t-shirt and cargo pants, he gives a confident grin as he plops himself down in a seat opposite you. His translucent and colorful hair tendrils are messily done as they flop against his blue-grey skin and scales, yet now that he's shown himself to you, you can tell that there is a certain ease and intent to his movements that hint at something more dangerous.

You raise an eyebrow at him, "I think I'll only be having the one I've ordered. I wish to stay sober for now."

Unfazed, he nods and speaks up once more, "Understandable. Am I correct in assuming that you are the one and only Deirdre Pathstrider?"

"Indeed," you respond coolly. "May I have the pleasure of knowing who has called upon me in such a roundabout way?"

"Archie. And I apologize for that, but it was necessary considering who I'm affiliated with. I promise that whatever the result of this meeting, no harm will come to your cause or the people you care for."

Peering into his eyes, you detect no deception from his expression. That doesn't quite set you at ease though considering how he managed to evade your attention.

"That's comforting," you say anyway. "But I wish to know the purpose of this meeting, and who exactly you represent."

Archie drums his fingers on the table as he says, "Sure, sure. Technically, I'm part of the UP. At least, something under the observation of the UP. It would be a little complicated to say the least to meet you in an official capacity, especially with how long it took for the bloody suits to make their decision."

Some of your caution shifts into interest as you lean forward, "Oh? What exactly is your role in the UP?"

He makes an uncertain gesture with his hand, "It's… a little unclear for now. I suppose you can say I was a intelligence and peacekeeping operative of sorts? Throughout the years I spent doing that, I gathered enough pull to try and create my own thing. Something big that I think will truly help Orbis."

A little bit of his confident attitude gives way to something more sincere as he stares back at you. You recognize the look and stance he has. It's someone with a vision.

"I want to build a team of the most talented individuals in the world. People with skills, strengths, and will that few, if any, possess. How many people like that do you think exist out there, limited by their situation and constrained by their environment? If we can bring them all together united under a shared cause, I believe it's possible to tackle the battles that will come in the future. And they will come, as I'm sure you've realized already."

Your eyes narrow at his proposal. Not out of suspicion, but of skepticism. It isn't exactly a novel concept. There have been many orders and secret organizations consisting of talented individuals, or simply people who banded together to create something more in response to something.

The problem is that most, if not all, of them were formed naturally. There usually was some inciting incident that led to the formation of these groups. What Archie was proposing was forcing such a group into being and presumably placing them under a higher official authority. Your first thought was to dismiss it, but as you think on it further, you begin wondering if such a thing was truly so terrible. Wasn't it the fact that no one was stepping up to help Yashima that led to you starting this whole thing?

You decided to ask for more details, "Is… this an invitation for me to join this group?"

He chuckles, "I can see why you might think that, but no actually. From what we've gathered on you, you aren't the type to be tied down and forced to listen to orders, right? Your need to wander and travel wouldn't gel well with something like this."

"Then why tell me about this?" You say, tilting your head.

Leaning forward, he simply says, "Let us help you."

"What?"

"The main problem facing the group right now is that no one wants us to interfere with anything," he says, sighing. "We haven't even really announced it publicly. There is a lot of politics right now that I just can't cut through without a success, but I can't have a success if the group isn't allowed to do anything. Yashima though? That's something the UP might come around on. Hells, some of them might even see it as a good way to kill us off."

You rest your head on your hand, confused as you say, "I of course would appreciate any assistance given. I fail to see why this would require a secret meeting set to convince me of it however…"

He sighs, "Practicality tells me I shouldn't say anything about it, but since this group is trying… well, I'll lay it out for you. You're going to get wrapped up in the politics of such a group. If it succeeds and starts getting widespread attention, it'll probably start getting really complicated. I can't predict the future that well, so I don't know exactly what will occur, but I can't promise that there won't be complications later down the line. Maybe even something disastrous."

"But…" Archie says as he leans forward. "Deirdre. You out of everyone in Orbis, no, maybe even the Currents, knows best what a few talented people with a common cause can do. You know more than most what threats lurk in the shadows, waiting to shatter the unprecedented peace we have today. This is the first time we've met, but if even a little bit of what I've heard about you is true, then surely you can see the value of what I'm proposing here? What lies after Yashima? Will the Impact be the only disaster Orbis faces in the future?"

He isn't quite begging… but there is a desperate tone in his voice as he makes his case. Closing your eyes, you think on what has been said. Heroes… Archie is essentially stating that he wishes to create heroes. Such figures come from all sorts of backgrounds, but have many of them ever been forcefully put together like this? You suppose they have if you interpret the many prophecies and stories of divine intervention in that way. In most cases you've personally seen and been part of, such groups formed out of a series of coincidences and opportunities or other factors.

But… the age of heroes is dead, as some say. You are fighting against that belief in your own way, propped on the shoulders of those that came before you. However, perhaps the current age requires a different way for heroes to emerge. Does Archie hold the key? You're unsure, but it may be possible for the both of you to test your beliefs. With most of your attention devoted to Yashima right now, you don't have much time or energy to think over his offer. You suppose it isn't exactly a final decision, but as you open your eyes to give your answer, your first instinct is to…

Choose One:

[] …agree to Archie's proposal. Orbis needs clear and visible heroes ready to take action against future threats.

[] …decline Archie's proposal. You don't want to get wrapped up in this, and you don't believe it'll end well.

AN:
Sorry for the long wait again. While I can't promise I'll be updating at the same pace I was at earlier in the quest, I think I'll be at least getting updates out a bit quicker than a week now. I decided to try something out with this update as well, and the exact result of each scene in the nations will appear later when the nations make their final vote.

As for this vote, this is something that may impact the quest a lot in the future. While it won't be centralizing or turning in a superhero story, I will be exploring what superheroes would be like in an already fantastical world with magic and powerful people everywhere with them if the people vote in favor of them. This vote will determine how much you'll see of that. Agreeing will not necessarily mean a whole group of heroes will be joining you on your various destinations, but it does offer certain opportunities and options that comes with its own costs and downsides of course. Declining will mean that you probably won't see them very much.

It won't necessarily be final, as I plan to have another moment later in the quest about that, but it's still an important vote. If any are wondering of the immediate benefits of this, you'll be able to choose two, maybe three of these "heroes", all of which are very powerful, smart, or skilled in their own ways. If anyone has any questions about this, feel free to ask. I may or may not offer some details about these potential helpers if people really want to know.

[X] …agree to Archie's proposal. Orbis needs clear and visible heroes ready to take action against future threats.

"Your group's help would be much appreciated," you say. "I will handle what comes after later. As of right now, the Yashimans should be our first priority."

The corner of your mouth twitches upward as you see the merman loosen his stance and almost go into what you assume is a pose of excitement, only for him to remember himself and settle back down, pretending nothing happened. You look at him a bit closer. While you've never been the best at estimating age, he doesn't seem like an older merman. Perhaps on the line of not being considered "young" by most, perhaps, but that is a broad range. Certainly no seasoned general.

"You won't regret this, Pathstrider," he promises, much more at ease as he leans back on his seat with a slouch. "Change is coming to Orbis."

Taking the drink you ordered from the server, you lift it to your mouth while raising your eyebrow.

"Some might take that as an ominous statement."

"Some might take what you're doing right now as rather concerning," he shoots back, grinning as he tilts his head back to take a swig of his own.

You concede to that. "True. Could you tell me some more about what aid you can offer?"

"We've got the best of the best from Avista. But just so you have a frame of reference, I'll let you in on someone you may be more familiar with from Tarshish."

He leans in and says, "We managed to recruit the most recent Pedra Moura, La Encantada herself."

You nearly choke on your drink as he sits back with a satisfied grin. That title… though you have only seen a few in person, it is a name which all with passing knowledge of magic recognize. It is given to any magician who descends into the Mourama successfully and comes out alive, usually only happening once in a generation. The Mourama is a structure, or perhaps "location" is more accurate, that has existed for millennia in Tarshish. Archmage Sofia opened the path shortly after the Incursion was closed. Whether she gave herself the titles or not is unknown, but all subsequent magicians who descended into its depths are referred to by those monikers.

Not every great mage became the Pedra Moura, but each one held a vision and mind unlike anyone else. There is an undeniable presence to those who have successfully descended it even if no one knows for sure if the Mourama actually grants power. Several of them vanished into obscurity shortly after and even more simply delved into their own studies and interests. Only a select few ever became entangled with worldly affairs, but each intervention marked a significant turning point in history.

"...how did you manage that? I have never known any Pedra Moura to join a group such as this," you ask, managing to keep most signs of your surprise hidden.

He hesitates for a moment before answering, "Truth be told, we didn't do anything special. We're always keeping an eye out for people and approached her as soon as we could. She agreed surprisingly quickly. There's more I could say, but I'd leave it up to her to disclose to you if the two of you ever meet."

"And you'll lend the cause the strength of her and her comrades?"

"Not quite," he says. "Two, maybe three members are what we'll allow you to take. While we want to help, having all our water in one spring isn't exactly the most prudent decision for a mission with so many unknowns. You'll be able to choose, of course."

You can't tell if he's lying or hiding something about that. Though he appears to be genuine and open with his reactions, it's difficult to infer anything he might actually want to keep secret. However, even the Pedra Moura alone is a huge boon if she is on a similar level to her predecessors. If the others in this group are of comparable worth, then this is already turning out to be a fruitful encounter. You'll accept his reasoning for now.

"What is this mysterious group of yours called, anyways?" You ask, curious now.

His eyes glint. "Oh, it's…"

United Peoples Headquarters - 09/24/1493

The United Peoples. An ambitious and optimistic effort by the nations of Orbis to achieve lasting peace. For millennia, the many peoples, races, and beings have fought each other for as many reasons. Alliances and treaties fell apart as the powerful made clear their disdain for words and paper binding them. New, powerful figures seeking to reset the board wished only to place themselves as the master. It seemed as if the world would tear itself apart before considering the idea of peace.

And it did. Avista and Tarshish threw their most deadly weapons at each other in the World War, and an entire region spanning multiple former nations was rendered a desolate wasteland now known as the Mana Scar. The former still bears scars from the disastrous first years of the war, while the latter buckles under the weight of their imperial past. Only under such tragedy with the world too exhausted to go on were they willing to sit and speak with each other to end it.

With their slightly more advantageous position, Avista brought all her allies and enemies together and proposed a preposterous proposition. A single, central organization to which all nations and peoples will have their voices and rights guaranteed by a pact all signatories have read and agreed to. Including both a forum where all may speak on various matters and a currency to bind them all together, it seemed almost too good to be true.

The world was shocked when Tarshish signed it first. Opposition quickly dwindled when the leaders of the two largest factions united on it, with those unaligned or skeptical joining in if only to not be left out of something so obviously important. Some believe it to have been an implicit surrender from the former imperial power, while others criticize Avista for having used the United Peoples to establish a hegemony of their own.

Still, the United Peoples stand. Still, all nations meet and speak in its halls. Still, all peoples may appeal to them on various matters. Still, everyone buys their food and commodities with the same credits.

And still, here you stand, ready to test if the foundations of this hopeful venture remains strong or has already withered.

You stand at the podium in a beautiful blue and white dress lined with traditional golden engravings of the elves. Clara argued with you on this for a while, citing the need to dress in an approachable and relatable way to connect with a global audience. You countered her with the need to represent your people and distinguish yourself from others, signifying your status. Eventually, the two of you compromised on a High Elven design, still distinct but close enough to a more modern dress. It wasn't your first choice, but you supposed it was fitting in a way. The High Elves would have loved something like the United Peoples.

With a fanciful cloak and veil around your shoulders and the long sleeves dangling from your arms, you can't help but feel a little ridiculous. Clara said you looked very "stately" and "striking", but it was difficult to feel that way in a room of people dressed in something more modern. It was one thing to be under-dressed in comparison with some of your elven attire, but being clothed in this amount of finery had a way of making you feel self-conscious.

Though perhaps that is just you using the dress as an excuse for your own fears. You have watched some of the greatest speakers in history give stirring speeches and inspiring words to cheering crowds. You observed many brave individuals speaking out against the mobs to decry injustice. However much you loathe to bring some of these past memories up, you were also witness to the worst villains striking terror and fear into the hearts of many.

A watcher, observer, and witness. That is what you have always been. You've always taken action when necessary, and sometimes even acted as a guide, but rarely have you been the centerpiece like this. What may take only a significant moment for a mortal to change and grow has taken you millennia to chip away at. And even now, it feels more as if you are enduring the attention rather than bearing it with grace. You don't know if it is something about your calling or you yourself… or what exactly is "you", but it is something deeply uncomfortable for you regardless.

The feeling overwhelming you right now is not quite like when you were stuck in a cell in Sumeri unable to move about. It is a lightheadedness that is blurring your vision and thoughts, sending everything into disarray even as you feel disconnected from it all. You didn't notice it at first, but it has been building up ever since you've started this endeavor. Your very body wrestles with itself in confusion, as if unsure of how to react to these new circumstances.

So you default to what you have always done and push it all behind a cool and blank face. You have to hope that this will go away in time once you begin the expedition to Yashima. Right now, the cause can't afford for you to falter. So you step forward to speak, ready to lead the fight like all you have followed in the past have done.

Behind you is the flag of the UP. Two hands of indistinct shapes shake, framing the continent of Kiengir in the space between on a blue banner. Before you is the UP Assembly in all their glory, flags and peoples from all over Orbis sitting together in an ordered fashion. Eight flags capture your attention however, and they stand at the forefront of the rest with the chief ambassadors of each nation already seated and waiting expectantly.

Avista. Wings on a star overlooking a stylized mountain and sea in the background, representing the three main races who initially formed its union.

Tarshish. A red and yellow striped banner with a crowned serpent coiling around a stylized tree protectively, symbolizing when the region first became an empire.

Zhonghua. A stylized dragon with its head slightly tilted back to look up at a shining piece of jade with other jewels on either side of the dragon, all over a yellow banner framed in red.

Sumeri. A green background with a red sun rising above white stars, each representing one of the regions and kingdoms who united to form the nation.

Vragzarg. Its flag mirrors the one on your World War medal, containing a clenched fist holding an axe on top of a red and black background framed by brown.

Sindhu. A crystalline mandala in the center, each geometric structure within it forming a complex configuration framed by lotus leaves on a saffron and green background.

Wilwatikta. A crescent moon and stylized sun in the center on a small blue background with stylized water below them, all on a larger red and white background.

And Yashima. Several people and representatives stand under its flag, Aoki Junko from the YRRA being one of them. A stylistic depiction of falling cherry blossoms with a paulownia symbol in the center rests on a white banner. Though the fate of Yashima is in dire straits, the hope of revival and renewal burns strongly within them as they seek to usher in a new dawn and spring for their people.

You have run across the continent to convince the nations on the UP Council, and now comes your final confrontation with them. Steeling yourself, your mouth opens to give the speech you have prepared for weeks, containing the words and feelings you've accumulated in the past decade since the Impact.

"Honored delegates and fellows, I come to you on a most important matter…"

What is the underlying message and tone of your speech? Choose one:

[] A critique filled with righteous indignation and passion on the injustice of abandoning Yashima for over a decade
"It is disgraceful that the world turned its back on Yashima and its people. Since the formation of the United Peoples, the Yashimans have actively aided and cooperated with the peoples of Orbis, only to be paid back with apathy…"

[] A sincere plea for aid, lamenting the struggles of the Yashimans on the mainland as well as the refugees
"I ask of the honored delegates here. How many have seen the state of the Yashiman refugees in your respective nations, bereft of a home and community to rely on? How much worse are the Yashimans on the mainland suffering right now? This cannot go on…"

[] A practical but somewhat dry speech, highlighting the need to investigate the Impact, what caused it, and if it poses a future threat
"We know little of the mysteries behind the Impact, and I believe it imperative to uncover them. Having lived through the Incursion, I see that Orbis is still not prepared to handle a disaster of that magnitude without tremendous loss of life…"

[] An appeal to the values of the United Peoples and their duty to help Yashima as fellow peoples of Orbis
"I stood within these very halls all those years ago, listening to the promise of a new tomorrow. If the United Peoples wishes to uphold its oath to the people of Orbis, it must come together and help their fellows in need or forever be seen as toothless in a crisis…"

[] Write-in.
(Impossible to appeal to all nations at once, and must have a theme representing what you think Deirdre's campaign has taken regarding Yashima the past few weeks. May be better than the current choices, but also potentially worse. You may either give a short descriptor here like I did or draft a full speech, but it'll be subject to my approval.)

AN:
Whew, this really should not have taken as long as it did. I did get a little distracted, but mostly it was because this chapter had a lot of details I had to get right and think about later on how it would impact future stuff. Also, researching language stuff prior to writing it all out is not a good idea in writing it faster aha. I suppose I should say that if there's any weirdness going on with any non-English stuff I put in, feel free to let me know.

There should only be maybe... 2 more chapters of UP stuff before we get on with Yashima. I find this stuff really interesting and want to get it right as it hits on a lot of stuff I want to do with the quest, but I apologize for anyone wanting to get to Yashima already. The length of Yashima won't be shortened because of the prior UP part if anyone was worrying about that.

To clarify, this speech alone won't make or break the vote with any of the countries, but it is the finale to the campaign Deirdre has been running and the vote is more about the general tone you have taken throughout it. It'll be one of the many influences your guys' choices (and dice rolls) have led to.

Volume 2: Chapter 6 - United Peoples New
[X] An appeal to the values of the United Peoples and their duty to help Yashima as fellow peoples of Orbis

"Over ten years ago, a terrible calamity struck Yashima and forever left a scar on Orbis. We watched as millions lost their lives in an instant and scrambled to save who we could. Ever since those dark days however, the people of Orbis have shut their eyes and turned away from the disaster, hoping the monsters from beyond will not see them if they could not as well."

You spent a lot of time deciding what message you wished to impart upon the UP and by extension, Orbis. In a way, this is perhaps one of the largest audiences you've ever seen. Representatives and delegates from almost every nation and peoples have gathered in one room, and your speech will be broadcast to every corner of the continent. It's still difficult for you to grasp that even now. Something within you balks at the idea of being the focus of so many eyes, and it is only your long-honed experiences giving you a chance against that instinct to step back.

"This is not a condemnation. I understand well the terror such a horrible event instills in our hearts. It is easy to let fear take hold, for it does not manifest only as panic. Fear seeps into our thoughts, whispering to our mind the costs and risks of going back to Yashima. Excuses then start forming as we tell ourselves that Yashima is lost anyways, destroyed by the Impact. Then it turns into anger and resentment as we defend our inaction, perhaps even believing the people of Yashima brought it upon themselves and deserve their fate."

Before you were even invited to speak, you started practicing and drafting various speeches with Clara and others. The discussions with the different parties and organizations were in a way a prelude to this, with each pitch and argument you made building up to the core of your message. Still though, there was something strange. Listeners didn't always say it, but you could tell they thought the manner in which you spoke wasn't quite right at times. A speech is different from a conversation or discussion, and those you conversed with freely before would in one moment be taken in by your words and at others seem strangely distant.

"I have seen this occur in people for millennia. Many have been forced to make a choice between action and inaction ever since the first neighboring village was raided and the first wars have seen cities sacked. The passive and resigned often met terrible fates because they did not act. They cloaked their fear with patience and caution, allowing themselves to be deceived so that they may sleep in peace."

Many hours were spent trying to figure out a solution, contributing to your exhaustion. In the end, you deduced it to a single factor. Perhaps others who listened to you also came to the same conclusion but didn't voice it out of fear of offending you. Maybe they thought themselves wrong, and believed you would be fine. In the end…

"This cannot be what happens to the United Peoples! I have witnessed the fall of kingdoms and the decimation of tribes. The Meso Empire collapsed under its own weight, believing itself untouchable even as its power was eroded bit by bit. We suffered for decades during the Incursion, as the demons used our fear and desire for safety to divide and turn us against each other."

… you are an elf. No matter how much you learn and how much you change, there is no escaping what you are. You fundamentally view the world in a way no one living in Orbis can and have lived longer than most of the cities and forests they have known all their lives. It is surprisingly easy to forget with how you try to blend in. There is a difference between understanding the struggles of mortals and being a mortal, and all your attempts at trying to place yourself at the same branch inevitably causes it to snap.

"I have witnessed the death of my people, slow and inevitable. Many have speculated on our downfall, and though I have given my perspective to many, I truly do not know in the end if it was preventable. Perhaps there was a solution us elves never reached because we dared not confront the issue, but we shall never know for it is far, far too late now."

So what can you do? An alerion, lacerta, and human can all find common cause in their history and culture, but an immortal being without her people seems more concept than person. In a speech meant to reach the hearts of as many peoples as possible in the world, you have to find some way to appeal or connect with them.

"But it is not too late for Orbis, not yet. There is still time for the UP to rally itself and go to Yashima's aid. To fulfill their duties to all peoples of the world, which includes the Yashimans, as laid out in this room after the World War. For the war too was a disaster borne of fear gripping the hearts and minds of all involved nations, a terrible event all of us in this room have sworn to prevent from happening again."

The answer you've decided on is insultingly simple for how long you've spent on it. You have to lean into it, to be that figure so many see you as and all that entails. It is fine, even good, to adjust yourself to a given group and demonstrate your willingness to abide by their rules or customs. Though perhaps not to the same extent as yourself, people living in diverse areas often do the same.

"I stood within these very halls all those years ago, listening to the promise of a new tomorrow. If the United Peoples wishes to uphold its oath to the people of Orbis, it must come together and help their fellows in need or forever be seen as toothless in a crisis. Each time the UP does not take action, the dangers of the world take it as an invitation to take one more step closer."

But this is the United Peoples, and you are a singular figure speaking to the world. While the UP was established to bring together disparate peoples, one of its stated goals was in preserving, allowing, and celebrating the differences between them all. You, technically, are a part of the UP, small as it is. It is a position which both the UP and you have to honor. As the elven delegate to the United Peoples, you must speak as Deirdre Pathstrider, The Last Elf.

"The United Peoples was constructed to defend against the very vulnerabilities I spoke of. It would prevent the rash, hasty actions of a few individuals or nations who may doom millions to their deaths… but it would also allow for voices to speak up to those with power, to warn and urge others to take action when needed. That is what I am here for, to prevent the normalization of fear driving everyone to look away from an issue that must be confronted."

Among the many voices in the international organization, you stand as the sole representative of that lost and mythical race. The only reason you are capable of leading this cause and not someone of similar fame is because of your status and others' perception of you. Pretending to be otherwise would be counterproductive and to some, insincere.

"Long ago, we elves saw ourselves in a similar manner as the UP. We thought ourselves defenders of the world, builders of civilization! Makers of peace and protector of peoples, we failed to guard even ourselves from our own demise. For the United Peoples to survive, it must be different. It must constantly be active in upholding its values and laws, staying vigilant against threats from within and without. It will be difficult. There will be many challenges and setbacks, and the situation in Yashima will be no easy thing to resolve."

You are part of a race of people who have tales of helping others in almost every nation and culture in Kiengir. The image and mystique of elves due to their emergence, immortal lives, and puzzling minds have done much to give you attention. People are curious to know what an elf thinks on this or that more than almost every other race in the world. You've experienced that interest enough times to know that.

"But I have learned to have faith. Faith that the people of Orbis can always change and mend their mistakes, always growing and developing in ways I cannot even fathom. The friends I have made and the heroes I have stood with have shown me that it is possible for people to rise above their fears. Even if it is for but a fleeting moment, a touch of courage and resolve may send ripples through millennia."

So this is what you must do. You must perform the role of ancient prophets and mysterious beings from beyond the veil warning a people of danger. A draoi you are not, but it did not take divination to understand what you are alluding to. People will listen because you are an elf, because you have lived an incomprehensible life to them, and your inherent mystery blunting any accusation of bias or motive. You must use that regard as best you can.

"Thank you for listening to my words. I pray that the United Peoples make the right decision on this day."

Quiet applause sounds across the room as you make your leave, not looking back for even a moment. Murmurs and other hushed discussions take place between everyone here, all those present affected by your speech. There a few officials in your path, staring at you with expressions you can't quite decipher, but you make your past them and through the areas indicated to you when you first entered the UP headquarters.

Only when you are certain no eyes are on you do you slide down against a wall with your head between your arms, taking deep breaths. The flood you have been holding back for weeks has started to break past the gates you set, the nervous, panicky energy flooding through your body for reasons unknown. You allow yourself only a few seconds, knowing that you don't have much time. Keeping yourself silent in case of any recording equipment here, you struggle to push past the tremors of your body.

Despite the nausea and disorientation you're feeling right now, you have done it. You persevered and saw this process to its end. Whatever the result of this will be, you can look back knowing you gave it your all. Standing back up and taking deep breaths, you open your eyes and continue on your way. While your part is done, there's still one last discussion you have to listen to.

You sit in a room set aside for you and some others, mostly strangers, watching the Council sit in a circle discussing what actions to take in regards to Yashima. With your speech given, all you can do is watch as the delegates bicker and go over unnecessary details. Perhaps that is unfair as this seems downright optimistic compared to other meetings you've watched, but you're unable to stop yourself from feeling agitated with how invested in this you are.

"...for those in favor of the draft resolution contained in document C/1493/7312, please raise your hand."

Leaning in, you watch as the screen flickers to each hand raised. This is it, the result of everyone's efforts.

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Avista): 3d6: 3+6+4 = 13 (13+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+3(Interventionist Policy)+2(Sophontarian Interests)+1(Western Branch Influence)+2(UP Unity Appeal)+1(ISO Support) = 26) Passed.

Avista. Hand raised.

You expected nothing less. There was always a chance they'd refuse, but aiding Yashima aligned with many of their interests.

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Tarshish): 3d6: 6+2+6 = 14 (14+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+1(UP Duty Appeal)+2(Light Endorsement)+1(Magi Society Endorsement)+1(ISO Support)-1(Apathetic) = 22) Passed.

Tarshish. Hand raised.

Your eyes blink at that. They didn't have anything against Yashima of course, but your hopes were not high for them given that you didn't visit or pay any attention to them. Fortunate indeed.

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Zhonghua): 3d6: 2+6+5 = 13 (13+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+3(Jade Emperor's Support)+1(Visited)+1(ISO Support+1(UP Duty Appeal)-1(Historical Tension)-2(Recent Tension) = 20) Passed.

Zhonghua. Hand raised.

Breathing a sigh of relief, you recall the courtier carrying the Jade Emperor's message…

"Greetings. His Imperial Majesty has sent me to relay His words to the one known as Deirdre Pathstrider. I am obligated to say that in accordance with the United Peoples edicts that the Imperial Court has agreed to abide by, you are not obligated to heed the Jade Emperor's orders or demands so long as you do not disrupt the peace as a foreigner. At any point starting now, you may leave."

The look in the courtier's eyes tells you it would be incredibly inadvisable for you to do just that. There was a little nugget of defiance planted in you by some of your past companions… but this was likely relevant to the Yashima issue, so you squashed it.

Once he sees that you are staying, the courtier deftly pulls out a scroll and unrolls it in front of him. Making a show of reading it right to left, he lowers it slightly to look at you and Xiaoqian directly.

"His Imperial Majesty finds the cause Deirdre Pathstrider is fighting for to be a noble one, and wishes to extend His support to it. The Son of Heaven has made assurances that Zhonghua shall be an ally of yours in the UP Council, and that His magnanimity for the refugees from Yashima shall continue for however long they wish to rest beneath His rule."

Stopping momentarily to check if you had anything to say, he continues when you remain silent.

"Unfortunately, His Imperial Majesty is occupied by the many duties the Jade Emperor must perform, and so Deirdre Pathstrider will not gain an audience with the Imperial Court. The Son of Heaven asks for her trust and understanding, and once again applauds the nobility and responsibility she has chosen to display."

He closes the scroll abruptly and returns to his unmoving stance, waiting to see if you would respond in any way. You… were uncertain on how to. Of course, you were ecstatic that the Jade Emperor had chosen to support you, but not being able to meet with him, or perhaps even ask for more details, was worrying. It shows that he wasn't fully confident of his ability to actually convince others with power of this move. You grumble internally. It looks like you have to actually hope that the Jade Emperor can exert his influence over his subjects.

It seems that the throne still wields considerable power in Zhonghua. While you have a complicated view of the Jade Emperors, in this instance you are grateful that he was able to overcome the general distaste the people of Zhonghua had towards Yashima.

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Sumeri): 3d6: 6+4+2 = 12 (12+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+1(Light Endorsement)+3(Recent Heroics)+1(ISO Support)-1(Have Their Own Problems) = 21) Passed.

Sumeri. Hand raised.

Your body sags in relief with the majority secured, with more votes to come. It was more likely than not from the projections you were given, but it was no sure thing. Sumeri especially seemed split on the issue, with loud voices on either side. Is it possible to obtain a unanimous vote…?

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Vragzarg): 3d6: 5+2+3 = 10 (10+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+3(War Hero)+4(Friends in High Places)+1(ISO Support) = 22) Passed.

Vragzarg. Hand raised.

There was not necessarily worry that Vragzarg would not vote in your favor, but the discussion you had with your friends was not… encouraging.

"Ah, Strider. It really is good ta see ya again. Been too long since we've drank!"

You sit back down after your impromptu singing performance and laugh softly. "And I see you still can't hold your liquor, Kelraz. Stopping after one drink?"

Kelraz grumbles, "Ah let a troll soak n' the atmosphere. Not every day I get a break like this, and I ain't gonna spend it blackout drunk."

An old alerion slides in next to him with a drink in her hand, "Deir, you wouldn't believe what the big guy is like on the job! Could barely keep in my laughter seeing him all serious-like!"

"And you wouldn't believe how many times the cabinet had to turn down one of her 'economic plans' Strider," he strikes back.

She squawked, "Vragzarg's financial situation has never been better!"

The three of you laugh, but you don't miss that the two people with the most influence in Vragzarg's current government are sitting before you all of a sudden. Kelraz and Kinga are friends, comrades forged in war, but they are also here for business.

"So, Strider. I see you've been beating the drum recently. Never thought you'd be one to do so," the troll says casually, eying you.

You look back without flinching. "I have been. There are many with hands cupped over their ears, and I have to reach them somehow."

He sighs, "Deirdre, as your friend, I respect what you're doing. But ya chose a bad time to do it, at least for us."

Holding back just what you thought of his "bad time", you wave for him to continue.

"It's dumb as shit, but we're in a pissing match with Avista right now. Out of all their allies, we're the only one with the balls to call them out on their nonsense. They're constantly trying to intervene where they don't belong, and our seat on the Council is partly because we both share some of Avista's values but respect other nation's right to do things their own way."

Kinga cuts in, "And then you come in, asking us to do the opposite."

You snort in disbelief, "This is hardly the same. Are you seriously—"

"No, you'll have our support," Kelraz says, hand raised to placate you. "We realize this is an exception. More than that, you're a hero and friend of this nation. Lotta our girls want to be like you, and the current president isn't a bad sort. I just want you to know that it wasn't an easy decision for us, as fair warning for any potential problems that may spring up later."

Settling down, you tap your fingers on the table. You suppose it was a lot to ask of people you haven't seen in many years, and you feel a bit of shame rising up and pushing past the slightly alcohol-induced indignation that just swept over you.

"Thank you, friends. I'll make it up to you somehow."

The alerion waves it off, "Psh, none of that! We gain a lot from having a recent connection with ya, so just make sure ya don't embarrass the Doom Commandos, ya hear?"

You sigh in relief. Five votes in favor. Two more and—

"And those against?"

Damn.

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Sindhu): 3d6: 4+3+5 = 12 (12+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+1(ISO Support)-1(Own Motives) = 16) Failed.

Sindhu. Hand raised.

Your hand clenches. There were some hopes that Sindhu may be in favor of intervening here, but it seems they were false. A shame... could you have convinced them if you had gone there? It's too late for that now, you suppose...

DC 18:
Deirdre Charisma Roll(Wilwatikta): 3d6: 1+2+2 = 5 (5+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+5(Big Celebrity Influence)+1(Sophontarian Interests)+1(ISO Support)+1(Unity Appeal)-1(Historical Tension)-1(Disinclined) = 15) Failed.

Wilwatikta. Hand raised.

Cursing to yourself, you think back to the encounter you had at the charity event.

"Well well, hello there Budi… and greetings to you as well, Ms. Pathstrider. I've been wanting to meet you for quite a while."

You raise an eyebrow. "I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage, Ms…?"

The naga laughs softly, voice smooth as silk. "My apologies. Call me Manasa. I'm… an old acquaintance, I suppose, of dear Budi here."

"Manasa," he grinds out, voice lacking any of the warmth he showed you earlier. "What are you doing here?"

"My, how rude…"

Budi just barely holds himself back from shattering his wine glass. "What are you doing here?"

You see anger flash in the naga's slitted eyes, a fury whose inferno has blazed for years without end. Then it disappears, and a cruel grin forms on her face.

"Why, dear Budi, I have come with information most pertinent to this charity event you're hosting. I'm afraid that our honored and elected officials may have some… problems with rendering aid to lost Yashima."

This time you tense up as you stare hard at this naga and say, "How did you come across this information?"

She titters, "Why, Ms. Pathstrider, I'm simply doing my civic duty in taking active participation in my nation's politics. Our representatives listen to their people's voices after all, so all I had to do was pay attention and talk to the right people."

"Is that so… it seems the government of Wilwatikta is quite attentive and transparent."

"Indeed it is, Ms. Pathstrider. I'm terribly sorry to be the bearer of bad news."

Budi isn't paying attention to your exchange with her though. He is breathing in and out heavily, struggling to contain his own wrath. You didn't think him to be so quick to anger, but it is obvious that there is history between the two.

"Is something wrong, Budi? Do you need to retire from the party now?" Manasa asks, faux worry coloring her voice and expression.

"... why? Why do this now, of all times?"

Manasa simply smiles as she states, "You know why, Budi. You know why."

With that she slithers away, her entourage swiftly covering her from both of your sights. There's a long stretch of silence between you two with neither knowing what to say before you decide to break it.

"Is what she said true?"

He grimaces, "She wields a lot of influence in our politics. Manasa isn't nearly as powerful as she thinks, however. Don't worry, I'll do what I can to make sure our country swings in your favor.

Budi did not succeed, it seems. That could've been disastrous, but at least you've managed to secure a majority vote in favor of lifting the quarantine in Yashima and rendering them sophontarian aid. While a five to two count didn't seem close, the UP only needed two more dissenters to veto lifting the quarantine. Over half of those who voted in favor held a very real possibility of vetoing or abstaining, and the unthinkable result of a veto from either Avista or Vragzarg would've made it an uphill battle to win.

It was closer than you liked, but success is yours anyways. You rise from your seat and begin to take your leave, likely needing to make a few appearances before doing so. The fight for the UP's recognition has ended, but this journey is just getting started.

Not long after you woke up bleary and exhausted the next day, you received an interesting call on your tablet. It was…

Choose One:

[] …Aya, the bake-danuki from Amina's group. You have been in texts with them sometimes, but they usually didn't call you…
[] …an old, but familiar number. One of the "therapists" you've seen occasionally in recent decades is calling.
[] …an unnamed number which managed to bypass your tablet's spam protection, and doesn't seem to stop ringing.

You did not obtain an unanimous vote, and therefore do not get the full weight of the UP behind your expedition. Important and divisive issues such as this rarely got the unanimous vote of the council so you prepared for this possibility, but you had hoped…

Regardless, the aid that the UP can offer is not insubstantial. They have opened the way of course and given you and related parties pertinent information they've gathered while patrolling the waters around the affected areas. The many sophontarian bodies of the large international organization have been unlocked and are freely giving the cause what resources they can. Official recognition from the UP has opened many doors, and those reluctant or hesitant are now jumping to support you.

The allies you've gathered in this journey have done what they can to make up for what the veto from Wilwatikta and Sindhu has stopped the UP from providing. With so much approval and eyes on them due to the Western branch's support of you, many temples and churches of the Light have reached out to the cause, organizing donations and importantly providing volunteers able to perform a variety of duties. Cardinal Edwards in particular has sent you "some of his best", his standing having risen for being the first to endorse you.

Zhonghua has offered the use of their harbors and waters to start the expedition from. WATCH and the Magi Society have sent some of their people to both observe and study the situation in Yashima in their own ways. Lumen Corp has finally fulfilled their promise and has been publicly supporting the expedition to Yashima, sending staggering amounts of Lumen and other resources from what little you've seen.

And of course, the YRRA has been more active than ever. Many Yashimans wishing to go home have signed up from what you've seen, and they make up a significant portion of the people on the expedition. Aoki Junko herself has stated that she will be coming along, handing the responsibility of managing the YRRA's affairs on Kiengir to others.

Still, even with all this, it still feels like more can be done. Despite the almost overwhelming support for an expedition to Yashima, much of the help comes from volunteers and groups willing to part with what resources they can with little expectation of a return. Lumen Corp alone has outstripped every other group in sheer value of contribution, and that is only because of their vested interest in the matter and control over their industry now that the UP has made their decision. Other companies have given token support, but some haven't followed through yet even after several days.

In the end, you can only do so much in convincing others. The only way for there to be an abundant amount of material aid and people for the expedition was a unanimous decision from the UP, and that was unlikely. What you have is more than other sophontarian efforts are given, with many cases around Kiengir having gone years without clear success. It's very possible that Yashima doesn't need any more, but there is one more option you have at your disposal.

Your own funds. You are not among the richest individuals, but you are rich. Not as wealthy as you could have been if you actively paid attention to your funds over the millennia, but enough that you can make a few important purchases to shore up any deficiencies. Money has never been something you cared much for beyond survival and gifts, so you are willing to spend exorbitant amounts for whatever you might need. You are aware though that sometimes having some funds in store can be very helpful in sticky situations, so spending all of it, even if you are willing, may not be wise for the future.

This will be a plan vote. You will be able to choose as many as your funds allow. Each option will decrease your Wealth rank by one. Once you reach "Poor" Wealth, you will no longer be able to purchase anything without accruing debt. You currently have Great Wealth, allowing you to purchase up to five options without going into debt. An option will require at least three votes to be chosen. You do not have to vote here, and you may also vote for nothing.

[] Food, toiletries, and other essentials
There is a plethora of this being sent, but Yashima could always use more. You don't know how many are surviving there, after all, and sometimes the quality of the food and other necessities matters more for morale.
[] Raw Materials
Yashima can surely use whatever materials can be offered to help rebuild their nation. You don't know quite what they need, but it's probably safe to say "everything".
[] Technology
Yashima was the most advanced nation in Orbis in many technological fields, but it has been a decade since the Impact. While it is debatable whether other nations have "caught up", perhaps Yashima in their current state could use some technological aid.
[] Luxuries
Even if Yashima is not currently in a disastrous state, the people there surely lack luxury products of all kinds. You can even have Yashiman luxuries brought over, with the few Yashiman producers of them that fled to Kiengir.
[] Shipping and Transport
You probably can't outright purchase many ships, but you can maybe rent and hire from a few shipping companies. It will allow you to carry more and spread out various goods, but it may make things more complicated.
[] Weapons
There are many dangers there, and you do not know if Yashiman have the tools they might need to fight them off effectively. In addition, your expedition could use weapons as well to fend off threats on the way there.
[] Mercenaries
Perhaps a slightly inaccurate term, but you can hire anyone willing to offer their services on this expedition. Despite the dangers, there are many people willing to help fight for coin, and even some willing to give a discount due to interest in Yashima.
[] Experts in various relevant fields
While you have talked with many bright minds, it's no substitute for people with actual expertise in the many different subjects and fields that Yashima surely will present to the expedition. Hiring academic, strategical, and other experts may help.
[] Write-in (Subject to QM approval)

AN:
This was a very intricate and complicated update, and I still feel like I've messed something up here. I hope the speech from Deirdre has the intended effect and doesn't come off as strange sounding. Initially, I thought the vote was a 6 to 1, but I tallied up the modifiers and saw that Sindhu was surprisingly not that close in reaching the DC. It was very possible Zhonghua, Sumeri, and Tarshish could have fallen by the wayside, but then again, it wasn't THAT unlikely for Sindhu and Wilwatikta to have voted in favor either. It was a closer vote that it appears, but it wasn't nail-biting at least.

I didn't really know how to handle the next few choices before moving onto Yashima so I apologize if it's confusing. I wanted to do the wealth choice but sort of realized it doesn't work well without a plan vote. Since I didn't really want to do a plan vote this update, I sort of added the three vote condition so we don't end up buying everything that has even a single vote aha. The phone call choice is basically adding a sort of sidequest to the Yashima arc, so it's a bit more important than it appears.
