Mmm, I don't know if this is saying too much, but Deirdre probably realizes this deep, deep down. While there is genuine friction between the Light and Advocates, I'll say the latter isn't necessarily "evil". Their faith and way of life is tolerated in most countries, and they don't break any laws. I'll do a small update on the glossary later, perhaps. Yes, they probably won't just do everything for free and they have their own vision for society, but Deirdre is perhaps a teensy bit biased by being someone who literally was involved in the creation of the dominant religion .
Edit: Added it to the glossary. Doesn't get into the nitty gritty of the good/bad/in between they do, but I think it generally describes the ethos and philosophy they go by the way they'd describe it others.

[X] No, they're self-interested and rarely provide help without a cost. The local authorities and the Light can handle this without the Advocates dangling the aid they provided towards them later.

[X] Yes, the Advocates are well-connected with a lot of resources on hand. They probably know a lot of the various dealings behind closed doors in the city, and despite everything, they are almost as opposed to demons as followers of the Light.

[X] "I have fought in battles against hordes of powerful demons. Orbis and its people haven't seen a demonic incursion in over a thousand years. Let me engage and be one of the first people in any physical confrontation in case the threat is more serious than we thought."
Part of the reason Deirdre is here is to get back in the swing of things, as it were. Among other things, that means fighting. So, let's get dangerous, ok?
[X] "I'm… Dee Strider. I was interested in some of the history Sumeri has and decided to visit."
"Dee Strider" is a terrible code name. Anyways, this group is serious, but new. They don't need to be upstaged by Deirdre, but they could use her help to get started.

This is where all that rep comes in handy. Two groups that could work together against a common enemy, but have difficulty doing so? Time to pass some speech checks!
Update: I'll be counting votes by line now unless I state otherwise. For those who already voted in a plan format, I'll count your votes accordingly. The option that has the most votes for each choice will win.
I've been mulling over this for a bit, but I'm wondering if line voting might be better. If I understand it correctly, line voting pretty much just counts which individual option gets the most votes. I don't think it'd make a difference right this moment, but it might make voting a bit easier and may be a bit more fair as to which option wins. The options so far don't feel like they need a set plan either, though I may have a few votes later which might need something more organized. Do you guys have any thoughts/preferences on this? Might wait a few more days on this since I'll be having to prepare for things to get more active in the story anyways.
Vote for each option individually or in a plan for the current update right now though. I can count them one by one and figure it out for now haha.

I say just do this one by line. The Tally program should be able to do that for you.
If you want the next votes to be planned though I'd say specify it on the vote options. Just a little note in parentheses to "please construct a plan vote" would be all that's needed.

Oh my, thank you so much! I've been relying on a mental image all this time when I've been writing and sorta been leaving some details vague because of it. I really appreciate you taking the time to draw Deirdre out like this. Let me set up a threadmark for it!
Alright, vote is closed. I'll have an update sometime today I think. Been struggling with it a bit though. Also, I'm going to just test a little feature here...

You lay both your hands on the table and lean forward as you prepare to answer. You feel a little offended by the implication that you can't contribute much to a more standard investigation, but you shove it down. She's not wrong. While it's tempting to just say that you'll be on hand to deal with powerful threats, that might sideline you to a less active role while you wait for said threats. After mulling on it for a bit however, you have your answer.
"I have millennia of experience in dealing with various problems relating to the Currents and demons. While I do not doubt the power of the Light, there are some matters that one capable of using and sensing magic can better deal with in the investigation. Especially so when it comes to the fell sorceries of demons and their servants. I offer you my insights regarding this and demons in general while personally going out to investigate."
Roll: 3d6 (3+2+5 = 10. 10+3(Good Charisma)+1(Aura of Regard)+1(Faithful)+1(Crusade Hero) = 16
(Mostly testing how this will work, it would've been hard to fail this. Next few rolls will be more detailed and probably have DC's)
The miu leans back, expression carefully neutral as she considers your words. Magic has been increasingly more accepted by society as time went on. With its inclusion in new and useful technology that can be made and operated by anyone, it has lost many of its more negative connotations. Magicians still have a somewhat mixed reputation however, and the capabilities and quirks they develop while studying magic set them apart from society. While you may not be a traditional mage, your offer of assistance with magic would be met with at least a little scrutiny by most.
Surprisingly, it isn't her that responds first but the paladin silently watching you throughout the conversation.
"She'll probably be better than those scammers we've relied on for consultation on such matters." He says almost casually, at odds with the imposing figure he behaved as earlier.
She sends a sharp look at him, but sighs in resignation after a moment's thought, "I suppose that's true. Very well. Ms. Crusader, if you wish to try your hand at investigating some of the leads we've gathered, I won't deny you. I expect you to coordinate with us however. You'll be taken on as a special consultant, but that means you'll need to inform us of any plans you have so we can adjust and vet it in accordance with our own."
You nod and relax your stance, "Of course. I understand how such operations work."
"My name is Fatoumata, and the one behind me is Amin. May the Light guide our efforts in removing these stains from this fair city." She says as she stands up and reaches out a hand.
"They will regret showing themselves here once more." You take her hand and shake it.
The two of you agree for you to be debriefed on everything tomorrow after you've rested and Fatoumata finishes informing everyone of your inclusion. Leaving the room, you sigh a little bit in relief. From what you've seen, they're the good kind of hunters. Not yet paranoid or cold enough that it undermined their efforts. The investigation is off to a good start.
You consider telling the adventurer group your full name, but hold off on it for now. At first you simply wanted to enjoy being around a party reminiscent of the past times you look back on fondly, but it may also be safer for them not to realize who you are. You don't know how much attention they'll call to the fact that they met you in the future if they realize your identity, but it's not an insignificant chance that unsavory parties could catch on. Going by a code name will let you both be around and protect them from those seeking to target you.
Besides, you smirk internally, it's practically a classic for there to be some secretive figure the main party meets on their adventure that aids them. They rarely are as influential or powerful as people imagine, but adventurers getting wrapped up in situations far outside their original scope do end up meeting people that aren't as they seem. You'll tell them the truth eventually, but what's a good name for you to use for this… aha!
"I'm… Dee Strider. I was interested in some of the history Sumeri has and decided to visit."
Dan blinks for a moment at your very well-thought-out answer, but Amina merely smiles as she lifts her drink up in the air.
"A toast for our first friend made on this journey! Let the illustrious Dee Strider be a sign of many more to come!"
The future band of heroes cheer and lift up their own drinks in response, even Dan. Tapping your cup against the others before taking your own swig, you grin as you relax the tenseness you didn't even notice you carried all this time. After a while, going through life alone places a certain strain on someone. Not even the elves are immune to the need for positive social interactions.
"So," you speak up again. "Will you all be starting your adventuring missions tomorrow then? Or will you perhaps go sightseeing for a little while?"
Kiran perks up, "Oh, there's several things I want to check out while we're here, but…"
"... we'll be starting soon, yeah," Rowan finishes. "There might be some interest in us just traveling, but we aren't vloggers posting about places we're visiting. We're adventurers. That's how we'll make our mark!"
You nod, "I see. It appears as if you'll all be quite busy in the future then. I don't know how the current system works for what you're all seeking to do, but there's always people in need of some help."
Amina sets her drink down and takes out her tablet, "Indeed! Speaking of such help, we should exchange contact information. We adventurers need to stick together, after all!"
You make an agreeing noise as you take out your own tablet and rattle off your number. It takes an embarrassing amount of time for you to register their contact information with Amina having to 'subtly' direct you on it, but by the end you have five additional numbers registered to your device.
"If you're ever in need of aid, we're just a call away!" She says confidently.
You smile back, "The same for me as well. I have traveled for quite some time and would be glad to share my experiences."
The six of you talk for a little while longer, but you sigh internally as you realize you should get going soon. You need to rest up before going out to investigate the cults after all.
"Ah, I'm afraid I must be going now," you say as you stand up. "It was a pleasure meeting all of you here.
Amina, who is starting to get a little tipsy, waves enthusiastically at you, "Ah! Farewell, fair Dee!"
"See ya later."
"Goodbye, Dee. May the light guide you."
"Bye bye, strange person who might be secretly important!"
"...bye."
After taking care of everything you need to before leaving, you step back into the night air and take a deep breath. The time for relaxation is almost over, but you feel buoyed by your time here. Musing about the adventurer's motivations and capabilities, you ignore the lingering voice in the back of your mind telling you that you'll see them age and wither like all the rest.
You lie down on the bed in the room the temple has given to you, dressed in a comfortable and light set of nightwear before you go to sleep. After a good meal and long shower, you take the time to relax before things start becoming hectic tomorrow. Your mind isn't totally at ease though as you idly twirl and fidget with the card the gnoll gave you before you returned to the temple.
Practically, you know you should at least hear the Advocates out. They're hardly the most sinister or malicious group you've ever dealt with. While they did try to stymie some of Ismael's efforts to spread the Light throughout Kiengir, they never outright attacked him or his entourage. If there's something they hate, it's disorder and chaos in society. Their participation during the Crusades proved that. Against demons, help shouldn't be refused lightly.
Something about the way they've approached you however rankles you. Even Noor, the gnoll who followed you, seemed to realize that their indirect way of trying to track and influence you wasn't going to work out well. While you may not be entirely adverse to working with her from what you've gleaned of the gnoll, you can't say the same about the ones behind and above her. You don't know if they're the mostly moderate sect of the Advocates who set up programs to help those less fortunate and provide disaster relief, or if they're the ones literally worshiping the devils and taking more drastic action to empower themselves for their goals.
For now, you'll hold off. You'll wait and see if their intentions are mostly honest or not. Judging by Noor's actions, they probably didn't plan on talking with you in the first place so soon. She was just trying to salvage the situation by offering to come clean. If they truly care about ridding the city of demonic cults, you suspect you'll see them get involved anyway. At that point, you'll be willing to discuss how best to help the city with them. If they decide to wait and do nothing, then you'll know they approached you just to try and force a connection with the temple and increase their political clout within the city.
You enter the room the initiate sent to your room guides you to, eyes immediately roving around to scan the area. Unlike the bare and empty room from yesterday, this room was filled to the brim with documents and devices strewn across a long table in the center. A long display screen loomed over the room on the other end, with smaller screens spread across the room. Beneath them were desks with computers and other contraptions on their surface.
It's… a surprisingly modern area for such an old building. Oh, a few decorations lay around the walls and some desks had objects with various symbols, but it's a stark contrast from the rest of the temple. The few times you saw places similar to this were in much different settings.
Right now there are only a few people wandering about, though you catch one dressed oddly that you assume is a demon hunter like Fatoumata. After taking a few wandering steps then standing awkwardly for a few moments, a gnoll at one of the computer desks turns and perks her ears once she catches sight of you.
"Oh, you must be the one Fatoumata mentioned," she calls out. "Swing by and I'll give you a debrief on the current situation and what we have on it."
You nod and head on over, noting how effortlessly she goes back to her activities on the computer. A cursory look at her screen tells you nothing of what she was doing, such things as mystifying to you as performing magic is to non-magicians.
She quickly stands up and holds a hand out to shake, "Hi, I'm Jasiri. I'm in charge of all the tech and communication around here, and occasionally I go out in the field when I'm needed. Hopefully with you around, I can focus more on keeping everything together here."
You shake her hand, "I plan to ease the burden of those here. Are you behind the creation of this room?"
Jasiri looks around with a smile, "In a way, yeah. I didn't actually build or bring everything here, but I fought hard for a room dedicated to more modern technology ever since I was joined up. The Light is great, but there's times where you need a scalpel instead of the hammer it often is."
"I agree," you say. "Let us see if we can cut away the infection spreading through the city then."
"Ha! I can tell we're going to get along. Let's start things off then."
You follow the gnoll as she walks to the long table with a few documents taken from her desk. Spreading them out, Jasiri takes a moment to collect her thoughts before taking a deep breath and turning to you.
"So. We've already been investigating and collaborating with the police for nearly a week now. There's been some isolated incidents with cultists, but mostly it's just been information gathering and organizing it all together into something useful."
Jasiri's expression shifts to annoyance, "Something we discovered early is that they have someone with a lot of tech-savvy on their side. They've been hacking tablets and communications in a way far beyond what normal people can do. I was afraid at first they were someone from New Hope they managed to hire, but we suspect now it's just a particularly effective hacker probably relying on whatever worshiping demons gives them. Annoying, but not incredibly dangerous."
"Oh?" You question. "I know such technology has some magic working within it, but is it possible to directly influence it with one's own magic?"
She nods, "Yeah, sort of. It's really difficult and not something an average programmer or magician can do though. The web doesn't just exist by itself. It operates within the world we live in, and that includes all the mana and aether around us. I won't bore you with the details, but it makes tracking this hacker difficult. Their location shows up in a bunch of different places and constantly changes because of whatever stunts he's pulling with whatever he's using. They can't do anything to stuff within the temple, but anything going out is fair game."
You tilt your head in thought. The finer details would probably escape you as Jasiri predicts, but when the problem is presented like that, an idea pops into your head. There is something that can maybe help with finding this individual if you're understanding her correctly. The same thing that could have helped with getting here quickly and past the border if you wished. It would cost you a little, and maybe require some explaining, but you've done it before without too many problems.
"Moving on from that," Jasiri continues as you think. "We're starting to figure out how they're recruiting. They're targeting the vulnerable and suggestible people by inviting them to—"
"Support groups?" You let out as what she's saying becomes familiar. "I heard tell of it."
"Huh, yeah. They're something that existed of course before this mess started escalating, but never with great frequency. There's been people handing out flyers and such for these meetings now though. We or the police can't really capture and force them to answer our questions for what's just a hunch though. We've sent some people to these meetings, but they haven't been able to find anything too suspicious."
The gnoll sighs this time before speaking, "Next is the stuff we know probably exists but that we don't really have any leads on. If there's a significant cult presence here, it stands to reason they probably have a place or places where they put the people they plan to use as sacrifices. We have quite a few suspected locations from tracking suspicious movements around disappearances, but nothing concrete. We think they're probably bringing in people from outside too to minimize the risk of discovery here."
"Lastly… we figure there's someone or a group high up in the city that's supporting them. Cultists usually act out and are discovered because they can't contain themselves, but so far they've been running an effective operation here. With the hacker, numerous places they might have as hideouts and storage, and the way they've been evading our best efforts, it's become increasingly certain they've subverted someone influential here. Sadly, investigating this is complicated and we have to step carefully when we do so."
You drum your fingers on the table as you absorb her words, "It seems that you have all found many leads and trails, but that much of it is based on conjecture."
Jasiri shrugs, "Investigations take time. We've gathered what information we have and extrapolated as many conclusions as we could from it. Now we just have to confirm them and discover new leads while we're at it."
"There's some other matters I've discovered that might lead to something, now that I've heard this." You say after thinking it over for a bit.
"Such as?"
"There was a commotion at the museum yesterday, and I couldn't discover much information about what occurred besides that something was stolen."
The gnoll nods, "Yeah, we heard about that too. Strangely, the police handling it have been tight-lipped about it, and the people managing the museum have been difficult to find. There might be something important stolen, but we're not entirely sure it's worth tracking it when it probably won't lead to information on the investigation as a whole."
You hum, "I also received an invitation from… a friend here. It seems she took on an errand to help transport goods around for some company. Neither of us recognize the name. And I was potentially thinking of searching for any local gatherings of magicians?"
"Huh, let me take a look at that company then," Jasiri says after processing that. "Before you, we occasionally had consultants from this one group of mages, but they were mostly scammers that charged us a lot of money. There's probably other lesser known private groups, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were the cultists we're targeting. I can give you the contact information for them though, if you think it'll help. They actually unknowingly had contact with a cult member, but they didn't know much when we questioned them."
You nod and lean back, taking in everything you and Jasiri discussed. There are a lot of different leads you can follow and potentially glean some information about the cultists from, but almost all of them are filled with uncertainty. Just like old times then. You'll just need to go forward and see what happens.
Vote for up to three options. The top three choices will be picked, while the fourth most voted may have some small hint given about it after.
[] Track the hacker in the cultist's employ: You may have something that will help narrow down their location at a small cost. Such a person must have a lot of information on the cult's movements and plans along with whatever is on their computers, but they'll likely be guarded in some way.
[] Figure out what's going on with their recruitment practices and support groups: You aren't exactly the most inconspicuous person, but it might be worth a shot to see what goes on in one of these sessions. Perhaps you'll glean something from it that others haven't.
[] Help out Amina with one of her commissions: You received a text message from Amina asking if you want to help move some things with her. Apparently she took on a job where some unknown company wants a lot of supplies moved to somewhere else. This is likely just her wanting to hang out, but recent conversations have raised suspicions on a seemingly innocuous task.
[] Learn more about what was stolen at the museum: For some reason, information about it is difficult to find. With the police at the scene stonewalling you and officers and investigators the temple works with not in the know about it, the item stolen could be something important. This might not lead to anything in particular about their general operations though.
[] Meet up with the police and law enforcement that the temple cooperates with: Obtain some information and see if you can discover any moles or spies within the organization. This could lead to something bigger, but you admit this isn't really your expertise.
[] Find out whether there's a private or unofficial gathering of magicians not employed by the government: Perhaps Dan might be helpful here? Jasiri and Amin both mentioned scammers when it come to the magicians they hired consultants from at times as well, and that they may have been in contact with a cultist unknowingly. They could know something or be recruited to help.
[] Try to find where they store their sacrifices and victims at: This is obviously a pressing issue and something weighing on your minds, but they can be anywhere. The demon hunters and their contacts within the police have eyes on suspicious movements and disappearances, but no definite location. (Until you find out more, this will require difficult rolls. Two informative missions will lower the DC to discover anything, while three will remove it entirely.)
[] Investigate who seems to be providing infrastructural support to the cults in the city: As of right now, neither you or the temple has information or hints on who this could be. Directly investigating such a thing is tricky too as it's likely someone or some group with power and influence that could manipulate the investigation. (Until you find out more, this will require difficult rolls. Two informative missions will lower the DC to discover anything, while three will remove it entirely.)
AN:
Alright, here it is. I feel like this update and the last has been a bit off, but since they're most preparatory chapters I decided to just go ahead and release them. Hopefully you guys enjoyed them still. For the Advocate thing, I sort of was conflicted by it. I originally didn't have a choice to decide whether to deal with them at all, but sort of added it impulsively without planning it out. They were going to be another option here I think. By the time I began regretting that, people already started voting. I didn't want to dismiss your guy's votes though, and it was also really close, so I decided on this sort of plan made by Deirdre. It was sort of my fault anyway. Hopefully it's fine, and it'll save on action economy too.
As for the choices this chapter, yeah there's quite a few. I wanted to add one more but I think this is probably enough for now. It still sort of feel like it's missing something strangely enough, but I guess I can always add stuff in later updates.
God, this is just hilarious. They're onto us, but not enough.
I don't have many things that I'm particularly pressed on with the votes, so I'll just put one for now and have the other voters make cases for the other ones.

Theft followed by unknown cargo? Seems connected. I'd say we go learn what was stolen, and chances are, our unknown cargo is imvolved somehow. Before we go though, let's clean up any moles in our info network. That should make intercepting that cargo of potentiallys tolen artifacts easier.

This museum business is just too weird. It shouldn't be difficult to locate a museum's owners, and as Indiana Jones could tell you, there's plenty of strange mystical artifacts that should really be in a museum.

Hmm. If we luck into the right three missions, we could remove the DC from one of the two difficult missions.
