Huh; several people saying to take the boy, but not Kaela. I'm finding this counter-intuitive.

I think we should take her in, and explained my logic in the accordion after my plan (short version: Lord Glover will almost certainly be upset if we don't, and she looks like a good Diplomacy adviser candidate).
> Lord Glover will probably be upset if we don't take Kaela in, since she doesn't have much in the way of other marriage prospects at this point.
> Kaela doesn't have much in the way of other prospects, and I got the impression that she was relatively friendly toward us. She should be fairly loyal.
> Kaela is Highborn (not very highly placed within that category, but still born into the local nobility). As such, she presumably has a relatively good education by the local standards (which isn't necessarily saying much, since I gather that dawi standards are a lot higher), and she should mostly know her way around the local noble social circles. Therefore, Kaela should be able to serve as a Diplomacy adviser, possibly even an Intrigue or Martial adviser.

> On the delay: Our hold definitely doesn't have significant fortifications established, and our food production is still not sufficient to keep things stable. Kaela (and our son) is safer where she is until these problems have been stabilized.

What am I missing that would make leaving her home the obvious choice?

[x] Plan Nurture and Defend:

You stared up at the entrance to your clan's new hold the echoing of pick's hitting stone ringing in its depth's. The year had been good to the clan as much had been built and much done and you could feel it and see it among the clan many had a smile upon their faces from what was accomplished and you took pride in that and what had been done.

Though there were still issue's you were sure but at least at the moment the clan could find some joy in these new land's, now though you just had to find some good ale and not the umgak brew that was starting to be circulated around the camp. Something that would need to be done but that was something you would see to because you could finally spend sometime underground this year and you would enjoy it and not have to worry about been a thane for a bit because if you didn't there would be a reckoning.

When your ranger's managed to track down a group of mountain Umgi who were a few valleys over and managed to relay your request to meet with the mountain clan leaders. Though you did not hear much from them throughout the year they did finally arrive at your valley.

Though it only occurred at the end of the year a representative from each clan had arrived and their party clad in thick fur's as they looked around the valley in suspicion. You let them rest the night while you offered them food and drink.

Your Clan tried to be respectful but more than one fight had nearly broken out among the clan and them. Most of the issues stemming from small misunderstandings but you managed to smooth them out as best you could. Though by the time they left you were a little haggard from keeping the peace but you managed to come to an understanding among each other's groups and while you did not make any friend the umgi were at least friendly when they left. Though your relationship with them was a little unsteady but that would grow, you just had to work your way through their distrust and stubbornness because you were sure that they were not as unmovable as a dawi. At least you hoped they weren't as your clan was enough of as it is.

The Clans warriors were glad to be given order's to build the valley a few defenses, many had been grumbling about it not been safe for the clan. So took to the task with gusto as they pushed themselves in digging deep trenches across the valley entrance. While cave entrances were blocked with wooden barricade's that could slow any attacking force down but their grit at getting the valley at least passable defenses allowed them to build a small wooden wall only two dawi high with an earthen ramp behind it to shoot from.

The elders found it barely adequate for a start to protect the clan though they approved of at least the foundations of a defense been built. Even if you wondered what good such a small advantage would do against a determined enemy.

When you gave the word for the Entrance hall of the hold to be excavated and shaped, you knew the clan would be excited, just a bit too excited if the speed at which they dug into the mountain though as thing's progressed through the start of the year no issue's occurred and the entrance excavated. Much to your dawi's relief. Though the issue of some dawi sleeping in the mountain before it was excavated was though it did relive them a bit, still had to get them out though.

The Hard part came after all that though as the Stone was slowly shaped into a hall befitting that of a new Karak, though it was slow work the clan managed to build the hall nicely as pillars were shaped and smoothed while hearths were built but it was only the start. You would admit privately that it did not match the great halls of Karak Hirn yet but it would get there as time was on your side. It would be expanded on in the future and maybe one day it would reach such a sight but it would be a long time before then but the hold could only grow from now which only made you smile, much to the worry of some of your kin.

Though there was true beauty to be found in the hold still as the entrance walls were built from slabs of blue granite, which the clan had struggled to make use of but they had done it. Though it was small and held little in the way of protection but it would grow just like the rest of the hold and clan.

You grunted out as you looked at the report that had been left in your tent by the ranger's detailing out that everything had been mapped out and that there were no more surprises and that it would make a good place to store caches of supplies should they ever be needed. Still, it was done even if you were not happy about the damn system been theirs.

Your not sure where they were found but that mattered little as you looked down at the mushroom broth that you now had in front of you. It was good to know that your clan would have even more food though you could not help wanting to cry at the report.

Tystin had said they had found only a few of them growing in the cave system and nowhere near enough to feed the clan for more than a few day's but they had found them.

You now just had to actually build a hall to grow them in so you could have some of your favorite broth every week. At least you had the starting of a hold so maybe it was not that far off, you hoped.

[x] Organise the archives: The journey to your new hold required all information in the archive to be divided so that it could be carried. Sadly the information is now in a large mess and will need time to be sorted before it can be used reliably.

You wondered if maybe you did not have a close cousin in relation's within the clan that had joined the defintion and if you did, you were sure as Grimnir going to throw them at Tystin when she had to grumble. The things you had heard and seen from her this year were sure to stick with you to the hall's of your ancestors. But it was over now that all of the clan's archives were organized in a large tent safely secured by some of the clan's best warriors by your orders. Now you just had to build a proper archive to avoid having such a grueling trial ever happening again.

Still you had throughout the year much to the horror of Nali and joy of Eitri avoided the ranger's causing many to wonder how you. A loud foot, something they called you managed to evade them time and time again. Not that it mattered much you learned a lot on how to sneak this year though you did ponder on why it was so easy.

You glared at the archive tent in frustration you had found scrolls oh did you find them, so why was it when you had finally found your source of information did this have to happen. You knew Tystin could be scary but you were not dealing with her not again she would just go on on another rant or grumble at you for disturbing her organizing. No, you would come back later when she was sleeping so that you could learn in peace.

Later on in the year, you would wince at these thaught's but at least you managed to grab at least a few thing's to learn from now you just needed to actually secure the good information and learn in peace.

Rolled:81+5=86 Perception roll:18(Failed)

Nali lead the investigation into what had occurred to the Umgi caravan and though it took time it seemed the umgi had died off in a nearby cave. The ranger's who found said that they seemed to have died from sickness with slight growths coming out of their skin. They were isolated for a time but were cleared when they appeared to be fine. But they reported that the Sigil of house Umber was among them allowing you to return what was their's.

When the party you sent out to return the lost wealth of the Umgi returned they brought with them the thanks of the Umgi lord and silver for giving them the information. (200 Gold received)

[x] Take responsibility: You will take responsibility for your mistake and take care of.

Rolled:65+15=80

When you sent a letter back to lord Glover with his messengers letting him know that you would take responsibility for your son and that lady Kaela was welcome to join him in your hall's once they were built stating that you did not wish to separate a mother and her son from one another.

Later on in the year an Umgi messenger brought you his reply stating that he would be glad to send your son to you and that his daughter would accompany him, though you felt there was more context to what you were told you were happy that you would meet your son. Now you just had to deal with the clan and any rumors that would pop up when and before she arrived.

I got the need to write it seems. also, I hope you guy enjoy the holidays. (I might post the next turn later today but if not it will come in a few days.)

I'm going for the boy as he's been named a bastard, so I don't foresee good prospects in his mother's land. Also, because lifespan issues may arise from a human-dawi hybrid which will mess with the boy.
Apparently I phrased my question badly. I wasn't asking why we should take in the boy (there's several potential arguments to be made there); I was asking why we should not take in Kaela.

In other words, I was asking about the point where you and I actually disagree on something.

Please do explain; you seem to think it will lead to problems I might not have foreseen.

I could be wrong, of course, but it looks like the numbers at the start of the rows refer to age (in other words, dawi reach adulthood at age 29). The numbers at the end of the row are the number of people in our hold that are within the named age bracket.

(Edit)
315 is how many young dwarfs we have while the larger number is how many we have total.
I parsed it as 315 children, and the larger number (3498) being specifically adult dawi, not the grand total.

Simple, the boy may inherit a longer lifespan, but his mother sure doesn't. It may have been best to separate him, so he doesn't have to see one parent age and die before him. Though, that vote has already happened.

Relatively immediate priorities:
1. Food: Despite the surface farms and at least partial success with mushrooms, we're still going through food significantly faster than we're making it.
> Try to expand surface farms past what we have now.
> Revisit the Fishery and Hunting Lodge options.
> Maybe an actual Stewardship action to build a mushroom farm will boost production to something worthwhile.
> Maybe we can try taming the local hares? Live rabbits were a major type of meat trade in the days before refrigeration.

2. Ale: I don't want to see what dawi are like sober either (if Dwarf Fortress is any indication, a sober dwarf is a very unhappy dwarf).

3. Improved defenses against Ironborn
> Could be specifically along the coast, could be more general purpose defenses around the main hold.
> Local "Mountain clans" seem to be suspicious but not hostile, so they are low priority as a threat right now.

4. Proper barracks so we can do something about the casualties from the battles shortly after we arrived.

5. Try for a general meet & greet between ourselves and the other major settlements in the North.
> Who can we trade with, and what are they buying?

6. Information network to track Beastmen activity (we have a grudge against a specific Beastmen leader, and that will cause morale problems if it goes unfulfilled too long).

7. Getting a port and shipbuilding industry established, so we can fulfill our oath to trade with Lord Glover.

8. Try to find an ore vein and start mining.
> Bedrock around here seems to be mostly granite. If I recall correctly, that suggests that it is a good area to look for gold, but not so promising for iron.
> Soil is likely to be loam or sand / silt (clay is associated more with basalt). We probably aren't in a good spot for pottery, but glass might be an option.

9. Logging camp for lumber and charcoal.

10. Get an engineers' guild established so we can finally do something about that broken gyrocopter.

11. See what we can figure out from that elf book we got.

Did I miss anything?

The hold so they have somewhere under the mountain to sleep, Dwarfs feel uncomfortable in the open sky

Its gonna be funny when the humans learn that dawi can live for like half a millennium and some rarely even longer lol
Also i cant remember any half dwarf humans in warhammer what will the kids lifespan be? and his physiology

Turn 3 – Unwanted visitors
Turn 3 – Unwanted visitors

You stood inside your tent going over the recent reports on the local area and that of your supplies. More than a few dawi had been found harboring good dawi brew as they saw the stock's dwindling and barely even restocking.

It probably did not help that the current brew been made was so bad some dawi had been seen considering leaving the stuff to rot, not that you could blame them but it was something to drink even if it was a terrible brew but it needed to be sorted out soon before the clan started doing things. You had heard of stories, of dawi not having good ale to drink and well you hoped you would never see it but it was just one thing on a list of other problems that needed to be sorted out.

You let out a breath of cold air while a small flame was kept going to keep the tent warm in such cold weather. Though the hold was coming along now so you hoped that it would be done before the winter truly set in about two or three years from now.

Though that was something to worry about another time as you focused back on the crop report's though before you could truly read into them a ranger came bursting into your tent breathing heavily his cloak covered in snow. "My Thane Umgi raider's sighted on the valley approach, the Longbeard's are calling for you."

You nodded your head as you dropped the report on your table as you made for your armor."I'll be there, let the others know." You said your voice seeming to carry.
