The College of Jewels (Magical Academy Quest)

Sure, but don't go thinking that's super special. Elemental does creation of things en masse much faster
Can Elementalism produce anything? I can see them getting, say precious metals, or gemstones/minerals, but what about more complicated matter? Can they recreate fine structures? Can they make complex chemicals? What about edible food? Etc.

I'm only asking about mundane stuff - I'm assuming neither method of conjuration applies to magical items.

and at this level you're only creating superficial copies of things.
Only superficial copies? How so?

EDIT: Followup question - can either method be used to make Antimatter?

All of those things are possible, though some are higher level than others. Edible food is actually difficult for all the branches of magic to make, but Elementalism can create complex structures relatively easily, and many chemical compounds can be created with Earth elementalism fairly easily as well.

Only superficial copies? How so?
Similarly to the insides of books being blank, that level of planar creation only copies the superficial characteristics- i.e. if you're copying gemstones, you'll get something that looks and feels like a gemstone, but wouldn't actually be one on a molecular level because Saphira doesn't actually have any understanding of what gemstones are at that level.

EDIT: Followup question - can either method be used to make Antimatter?
Sure. But that would be hilariously high level. The Archmage could do it, but even he would need to cheat slightly and use a different method to make it happen. And no one in Diadem is better at magic than the Archmage, flat out.

Hrmmm. Antimatter is actually kind of interesting. It would probably actually be threatening to a lot of things that normally scoff at base 'magic'. But ultimately not really that interesting I think. If the Archmage is forced into a confrontation at that level he has better things to be doing.

[X] Yes
[X] Find time to go into the city.
[X] Henry

Why is it I can never remember to vote for this quest?

Anyway, staying on this campus 24/7 can't be good for our health and much like Ruby, Henry definitely needs more actual friends and so do we. And Adam. And the "Volunteer". Look, I want a group of people we count on if and when shit hits the fan.

Ok, we have the following votes: 6 for Ruby, 5 for Henry, 3 for Adam and 1 for Sammy.

Anyone wants to consider switching Ruby/Adam for Henry to attempt to form an inner circle of friends?

Ahg, looks like I'm going to need to do a lot of manual work here to figure out what's won. I really need to do some experimenting with the tallybot to figure out how best to structure these votes. Anyways, 50/50 whether I'll get an update out in the next few hours or if it will happen tomorrow, but either way the vote is open for about another hour while I sort things out.

@Wander
I seem to have messed up the Weekend actions part, and I've just fixed it.

It should now reflect the accurate tallies now.

Explantion: For some reason my vote (and Veekie's who voted my name) just kept appearing everywhere in my tally program, including in options I didn't vote.

Hrmmm. I can resolve the weekend action fairly satisfactorily by just favoring the highest voted 'Find time to go into the city' choice given that that has significantly more votes overall, but whether Saphira spends time mainly with Henry or Ruby is less clear cut. I don't want to cave and do some wishy washy 'you spend some time with both of them' outcome because that explicitly wasn't a choice for a reason.

The vote is being left open until that tie is resolved then. (And closed in favor of whoever breaks the tie first if it gets tied again before I start writing.)

Saturday comes, and you reluctantly decide to put aside the conundrum of the Diagram for Sunday. Today, you have a real opponent to face. Yesterday you had asked the TA to not intentionally place you against someone easy. You wouldn't just accept victories being handed to you- you would claim them by yourself, with your own power.

The TA had seemed skeptical at your request, but she had at least promised to not give you a weak opponent. Though you were a bit suspicious of her followup to that statement. 'Your opponent will be picked just as randomly as every other student's' could imply that none of the pairings were at all random, which honestly you would not be even slightly surprised by.

Regardless, you're enjoying the prospect of being able to actually win something on your own merits for once in your life, rather than victory or loss being preordained by your 'betters' like gods from on high.

These are your thoughts as you start to walk into the arena. You're about middle of the pack this time, rather than going almost last. Once more, Ruby has already fought, though this time she crushed her opponent pretty badly. Henry and Adam have both yet to fight; from the scheduling sheet, they were near the end this time. Your opponent meanwhile is someone named Adeline Ambrosia. The last name doesn't ring any bells, which is always a bit of a confidence booster. If it did, you would be considerably more worried. As-

"Hellooooo~"

You jump a little bit as you're tapped on the shoulder from behind before you spin around. A somewhat tanned hand is currently being stuck almost in your face. You try to formulate a response, but once more your thought process is interrupted as her hand goes from being in front of your face to down to your own and starts shaking it up and down rapidly. Her grip is loose though, so you quickly yank your hand back. She doesn't seem bothered.

"I'm Addy. It's great to meet you!"

"Ah-"

"I just wanted to get that out of the way first. I hate it when people call me Adeline."

She grabs your hand again, this time much more tightly as she starts pulling you down the corridor that leads into the arena.

You take her in from her position in front and slightly to the side of you. Long wavy blonde hair and wearing some kind of hat with a wide brim dyed pink. Her actual clothes are more on the red end of the spectrum, but light red. They look fairly practical, and from what you can see of her tanned skin, she must spend a lot of time outside. You also notice the she's somehow got a harp attached to her hip. You think it hooks onto her belt somehow.

Do something about her grabbing your hand?
[] Yes
-[] What?
[] No

What do you say to her?
[] Write-in.

Tactics for the upcoming fight?
[] Open up by trying to drop rocks on her and wash her away with water from you portals.
[] Use elemental planar portal to try and take her out
[] Try to drop her into one of your portals and win the fight by default.
[] Something else? Write-in.

Turns out you managed to get paired with someone strong enough that I can't fast forward through the fight. On the plus side, at least the long vote for the rest of the weekend is out of the way for when it's needed.

Also, big thanks to @FatedBread for the help with the vote tally. I really appreciated it.

Anyone else suspicious about her grabbing our hand and not letting go before a fight? I don't think we know any countermagic to undo whatever she might have done, though. EDIT: Though if we vote to wrench our hand out of her grip, we can potentially interrupt whatever spell she might be casting that requires contact.

Great, a friendly opponent.
Now I feel bad, if (when) we get her thrown out.

Anyone else suspicious about her grabbing our hand and not letting go before a fight?
Me. Nothing in this college suggested that being overly friendly is a good idea unless you have something to back it up with. In this case she is being friendly to us, who are friends with strange people and have blasted the last opponent off the stage with little effort. Most people would be worried about getting expelled.

Then again, there are weirdos.

[X] Yes
-[X] Gently pry your hand out of her grasp. "Look, Addy, I just need a moment to prepare myself... if you don't mind? I'll be with you in a minute."
-[X] Check yourself for any signs of magic that is not your own once she leaves for the Arena.

Ok, I am paranoid. Is it that bad of a quality?

Tactics for the upcoming fight?
[X] Try to knock her off her feet and wash her away with water from one of your portals, then open a second portal for her to fall into.

I am mildly interested about the harp, too, but we can either talk with her, or check for foul play, so...

If she is casting magic on us, gentle isn't going to cut it. If she isn't... well then we don't really care, she can have her hand. Go violent or go home!
I like the other parts though.

If she is casting magic on us, gentle isn't going to cut it.
There is no way to refuse that request without getting rude or violent, but that's how I'd like to start. If she is using magic, she'd know the game is up and she needs a new trick. If she isn't, I don't want to get more confrontational than is necessary.

Oh, and I almost forgot. We need to dedicate our victory to the Goddess of Battle, don't we?

Good points! how about this:
[X] Yes
-[X] Firmly pry your hand out of her grasp. "Look, Addy, I just need a moment to prepare myself... if you don't mind? I'll be with you in a minute."
--[X] If she tries to hold on to our hand despite this, wrench it out of hers.
-[X] Check yourself for any signs of magic that is not your own once she leaves for the Arena.

[X] Before the fight begins, dedicate our coming victory to the Goddess of Battle. With style.

As for tactics, I like the wash-her-into-a-portal idea. We should remember that we can currently cast 3 spells at once, and that she has a harp, so we want to keep on the offensive and not give her a chance to play it - I very much doubt we'll like what happens if she does.

Does Saphira have anything suitable for plugging her ears? The harp is a fairly clear possible vector. It's either enchanted or has use in, say, dealing with a spirit.

Unless you can come up with something I haven't, no. Novice elemental control isn't good enough to make anything useful for that.
Tiny portals to nowhere, blocking her ear canals! Though that would take up two spell slots, so that would suck.

Tactics:
[X] Try to knock her off her feet and wash her away with water from one of your portals, then open a second portal for her to fall into.
[X] While doing this, summon an Elemental Planar portal on top of her, to distract her and keep her from wondering what the point of the water is.
[X] Throughout the fight, always try to keep her on the back foot, and don't give her any time to prepare anything tricky.

While I'm not going to stick mud in my ears to test it, I have doubts about how much sound that would actually block out.
We bake them solid?
