The College of Jewels (Magical Academy Quest)

Hmm, this is tricky.

Hey @Wander, is it possible to summon a large rock up high in the air and hold it there? Assume that it starts outside the dissipation field. Also, would it drop or be totally dispelled when it hit the field? Or, alternatively, a very large and thick clump of dirt/mud?

I'm thinking we throw sand and rocks in Ruby's face to annoy her and distract her, then have a rock drop as a result of Henry being forced into Ruby's dissipation field. Or alternatively we try to bury her under mud.

@Wander, can we decide what type of rock we wish to create?

Because I want to make clouds of coal dust and then ignite them.

This will result in ludicrous explosions.

Is this within the rules of the tournament? Can we call her out on it? We know she feels guilty about something, and unless she was ordered to cheat by Viola or Diana, we might be able to talk/taunt her into leveling the field.
The reaction of anyone to you trying to bring up some idea of fairness in this would be approximately 'lol,' but as for talking Ruby herself down somehow, that's certainly something you could try.

Yes that is possible, and it would drop instead of being dispelled when it hits the field.

Coal dust would be doable, though even more then ice it would be very vulnerable to disruption and just about impossible to create within the dissipation field.
Edit: Missed this one.
Are there any pillars in the Colosseum?
Nope. Plain expanse of sand.

Refinement of some earlier proposed ideas into one plan.

[X] Plan Drop, Rock and Dash!
[X] It seems Ruby has an enchantment protecting her from harm. So much the better - you don't have to worry about hurting her.
[X] If the Dissipation Field breaks every spell you cast, you just need a spell that does damage when it's disrupted.
-[X] But first, you need to distract her. Blow rocks, ice and sand in her face with wind spells. Use small spells to probe the extent of her range.
-[X] Add some more rocks and dirt to the ground. Use some more wind spells. You need her not to look up.
-[X] Summon a large rock up high in the air and hold it there. Position it a bit in front of Ruby and above the field.
[X] When you're ready:
-[X] Tell Ruby that she's outmatched you. But you'll bet everything on one final push!
-[X] Set yourself alight. It may go out when you enter the Dissipation Field, but that doesn't matter.
-[X] Rush at her. You want to push her into the falling rock. It doesn't matter if you take a hit, the Dissipation Field should break the spell and drop the rock on top of her!

Eh, not entirely what I wanted, but it will do.

Sorry, not sure about the last part.

Why are we setting ourselves alight and which spell the DF is supposed to break? How do we expect it to work and why should we not worry about the hit?

Also, summon a rock in front of Ruby? But we are pushing her under it. Wouldn't it be 'behind'?

I was more or less following the plan until I didn't...

I don't blame you. It's 1:30 am here and I'm barely coherent...

Basically, we need to do something to pin Ruby in place when the rock falls on her. The trigger for that is either; Henry entering the dissipation field, or the rock touching the edge of the field as Ruby moves forward. We need to bait her forward or rush into her, whatever. I leave this in your capable hands...

Or maybe just turn the ground to mush?

Sorry, going to bed. :(

I need a hint about how Dissipation Field works. Does it make it impossible for us to maintain control of magic?

I can probably see this working if Ruby advances towards us and walks under the rock. We could use a taunt to make her stop and brace for our final attack. She thinks she has an advantage in close combat - it's likely she won't move away from our charge if we are delivering ourselves right into her hands. The rock will serve as a flanking partner - hopefully, it'll either hit her or disrupts her concentration enough for us to cast something that will get through.

Not exactly a fan of setting ourselves on fire, despite whatever the previous vote may have suggested...

Another problem with this is if we try to tackle or pin Ruby so that the rock can hit her would that not also mean that the rock would hit us too?

The free fall speed is faster than our running speed. I am not sure we can outrun it. It'll take it, what, a bit upwards of 2 seconds to fall down 30 meters?

We probably aren't tackling Ruby under the rock, it'll fall down first. Though if we accelerate before we enter the field, we might be able to make it and push her...

Today is busier for me than yesterday was, so votes will remain open for at least four more hours, probably longer.

The current plan lacks finisher. And the author is fast asleep, it seems.

Oi, @SystemicHatter! What about this?

Same old, minus the self-immolation. I can't think of a decent move that would end a fight, since she is shrugging off physical damage and dissipates magic freely. The laws of physics are our only hope... if the rock hits her hard enough to let us cast unimpeded for a few seconds.

So, it may or may not come up, but what is your contingency if she does notice the rock?

It is for that reason that I wanted to place it behind her and tackle her into it, but if it comes to that... What is in our spell arsenal? Just the four elements?

It would have been nice to make the battleground wet and then electrocute it while she is in the middle of a pool, but electricity is off the table...

What did you mean by coal dust being vulnerable to disruption?

This:
[] Minor Disruption (1): Your opponent's spells become slightly unpredictable, or very much so if they would be already. Precise aim becomes impossible and catastrophic failure a real possibility.
-[] Disruption (5): Your opponent's spells become unpredictable. Aim beyond 'somewhere within 180 degrees of where I'm pointing' becomes impossible and catastrophic failure a real possibility, or almost guaranteed in the event of already unstable spells.

Like with the ice you've been conjuring, she won't need a full counterspell to shut down you conjuring coal dust. Of course, you've been managing to summon ice, so really it's just that you won't be able to summon it inside the dissipation field and it will take longer to force a lot of casts of it through outside the field with your multicasting.

And yes, Henry is limited to elemental magic.

The idea with electrocution/immolation etc is to let physics do the work, not magic. So the coal dust has my attention because it can get summoned outside of the DF range, and then set on fire by mundane means, bypassing Ruby's countermagic.

If anyone can come up with other possible AoE methods of attack...

@Nevill: Your changes work.

If she notices the rock, we're pretty screwed anyway, so want to try the vacuum attack?

Pretty screwed is my assession of the situation as well.

I have no idea what is vacuum tube supposed to do. I need a reminder.
[X] If all else fails, pick up some sand, toss it in her face, and punch her in the nose.
Isn't this what we've been doing so far with rocks, ice and wind? Does not seem to be working.

I'd probably try to create coal dust, blow it into the anti-magic field, and detonate it from outside the field. If that's workable at all, that is.

I'd go with the coal dust, if we can get confirmation from @Wander that Henry can actually make that (due to coal being made from highly compressed dead things).

The vacuum tube is supposed to dissipate when it hits the field and cause air to rush into the vacuum at high speed. Due to the fact that I'm not great at physics, I don't know how it'd have to be shaped to achieve that, or if it would even work, so it's not something I'm very comfortable with. Also Ruby would find it easy to disrupt.

I think he mentioned it.
Coal dust would be doable, though even more then ice it would be very vulnerable to disruption and just about impossible to create within the dissipation field.
The downside is if Ruby realises what it is (which is not a given), she may well be able to set us on fire before we send it her way.
