Taylor Hebert and Her Rather Sad Life [Worm/The Gamer/D&D3.5]

ECL 1.2
Taylor Hebert and Her Rather Sad Life: ECL 1.2

Taylor soared through the air, her mind weighed down in stark contrast to her earthly form. She had to go home first, really. Her dad must be worried sick about her, and she needed her family more than ever. But she couldn't just go back to school like nothing had happened, and the only people who seemed to be able to help her when it came to her secret identity - or lack of one - were the PRT.

So she chose to deal with the immediate crisis first, and angled herself downwards again. Using the clouds and the setting sun for cover, Taylor sliced through the air on her way home. She sidestepped places where she could be seen, and was as stealthy as someone like her could be. She managed to land in her backyard without any commotion, folding her wings through the slits she'd been forced to cut into the shirt.

They were still very noticeable, but this way she fit through doors.

She walked into her home via the back door, only to see her dad sitting next to the phone in the living room, his entire body shaking as he waited.

"D-dad?" She half-asked, half greeted.

"Who; who the hell are you?" He shouted, and Taylor tried to harden my heart to the words.

"It's me, Taylor. Please, you need to believe me - I just got stuck like this!" She said, her voice lyrical even in distress.

"Then tell me something only Taylor would know." Danny asked.

"The third floorboard from the left makes a huge noise if you step on it just right and you've been meaning to fix it for years but never got around to it." Taylor replied. Danny laughed, the normality of the information catching him off guard.

"I guess it really is you. But what happened to you? Why - why do you look like that?" He asked. Taylor walked forward, sitting down on a worn couch. Even though her wings retracted, sitting down like this was awkward.

"I don't really know why, but I got powers. Something really bad happened to me, and then I became like this." She said, her outwards composure far outsripping her thoughts.

"Wait, what happened to you - are you gonna be okay." Danny asked frantically.

"People at school, they've been bullying me for a while now. It got... bad. But it's all better now." Taylor said.

"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier? I-" Danny began, but Taylor cut him off.

"I know it was stupid of me not too. But I didn't want to worry you, and you were always trying so hard at the union and -"

"Please, don't do something like that again, Taylor. Please." He said.

"I won't. I know it was stupid of me and I'm sorry that I just kept it to myself for so long."

"I just want you to be safe. What will you do now? I'd imagine that your, uh, body might present some difficulties with the whole secret identity thing." Danny said.

"I'm working on a solution for that. Right now, I need some coins for a payphone and a phonebook..."

_________________________________________________
It turned out that the PRT had a hotline for new capes to call printed in the phonebook. Which was certainly convenient. Taylor had made her way to a disused payphone in a bad part of town under the cover of darkness. She could see perfectly fine, even though the street light was broken, aside from the absence of what she would normally recognise as colour. Objects certainly had something like a colour, but it couldn't be mapped to any normal colour that she knew of. In the light, everything seemed more colourful to her, and she could pick out fine details far easier. Pulling herself from her thoughts, she slid the last coin into the graffiti covered machine. The call went through, and Taylor heard a cool, pre-recorded female voice on the other end

"Hello. You have called the Parahuman Response Team hotline for new parahumans. Please wait to be transferred to your local branch." The pre-recorded message went, and then an entirely less robotic sounding man picked up the phone.

Taylor hovered in the air above Winslow High School, her corvid wings barely adjusting their positions. She saw the PRT van and a motorcycle drive up to the deserted school, and watched as a pair of heros got out of the van, and an armoured man get off the bike. She recognised two of them - Miss Militia and Armsmaster, but the tall hero in the red outfit she couldn't place. The red-suited man leapt into the air, flying upwards to meet her. He was carrying what looked like recording equipment in his arms.

He floated in front of her, with no visible means of propulsion, and smiled.

"Hey. I'm Aegis, one of the Wards. They would've sent one of the protectorate, but well - none of them can fly so it became my job. What, uh, do I call you? You didn't leave a name with the PRT." Aegis said jovially.

[x] Write in Cape Name (can be changed later)

"Right, well let's get to it then." He said, and gestured towards the school. He was nervous, but Taylor realised he had every right to be. There were no indications that anything untoward was going on, but Taylor remained on guard. They descended gradually, and soon touched down onto the roof of the school. Aegis took a key from his belt, and unlocked the door. Taylor's wings folded back, and she stooped to fit through the door. It had been hard to tell before, but Taylor could definitely see how this building had been designed for people smaller than she was now.

They walked down the halls of the school in an awkward silence, but that allowed them to hear the voices as they closed with the locker room.

"Shit, shit hurry up and finish fucking vomiting. If Hebert's already out we are fucked." Sophia whispered hurriedly. Aegis seemed to suddenly float an inch or two off the ground, and I felt myself using skills I hadn't had before the locker to creep up on the Trio. Over the sounds of retching and entirely too-loud whispering, Aegis and I went unnoticed. He turned his camera on, and we turned into the locker room. There were the trio, standing around my locker. Madison was puking at the smell, and Emma who had supposedly been standing watch was looking over her friend. Sophia stared wide eyed at us.

[x] Attack her! It's time for payback, and in full.

[x] Confront her! You have her on video, maybe you can get even more evidence.

Good. We'll need the retraining even with the faster feat progression, but this way we'll at least have the persist setup by lvl 9. Thanks for the info.

By the way could you maybe answer the question I asked a while ago:

Using Acorn of far travel to effectively act at 10 times normal speed at lvl 13 would be another example. Are you okay with that sort of thing or should we cut the power levels back?
I'm fine with however far the players want to take their optimising, short of Pun-Pun and simmilar infinite loops (because writing 'and then the Simurgh shows up and kills you' would be a bad note to end the quest on').

Also, an elaboration on how the whole 'parahuman powers as spells' thing works - they take up a spell slot, but can be used just like the original power as long as you have them prepared. Is this powerful? Yes, but I let you be a Planar Shepard/Incantrix so I'm clearly fine with absurdly powerful persistent effects.

Edit: Obsolete. See threadmarks.

You hear that? It's the sound of Eidolon crying in the corner.

we have Aegis recording this shit? this is fucking amazing.

also guys please vote for a cape name.

@Tekomandor
Can we still try to save?

Knowing if we can literally resets ourselves would be valuable knowledge.

If it wins the vote, but not right this moment.

that's fine. mean we are in the middle of having Sophia's team leader videotaping her screwing herself over and both Armsmaster and Miss Militia is right outside. Aka the leader and second in command of the Protecterate here and Armsmaster no doubt has hs own recording equipment.

This could give us a bit more on the negotiation table with the PRT.

Wait we have Emma on tape too. So Mr.Barnes can't try to threaten to sue us to intimidate us into backing off.

Hell we could potentially use this shit in a case against Winslow itself(With proper editing to get cover up secret identities.)

And since we flew home, Danny had to take hush money to help with hospital bills.

MMMMMMMMMMMHHHHHMMMM

This sequence of events is sssssssoooooo pleasing to my justice boner.

oh right vote time

You want a name that virtually means God? Do you want the PRT to stick us in mandatory therapy for the next several months?
Oh calm down. They won't do that just because of some teenage arrogance. Does seem somewhat tasteless though. If we want to name ourselves after a deity it should be one that's not actively worshipped by a large group of people today.

If it was just some random teenager it would be one thing. A teenager who is potentially the strongest cape in the world is a different proposition all together. If that were the name such a cape picked and I were in Pigot's position i would do my best to stop said cape from growing in power until I was 100% sure it was just bad taste and not megalomania. Remember all capes are warped and broken by their trigger events.

Come on. That's blatant exaggeration. The protectorate is lead by a guy named legend. They don't seem to have a huge problem with over the top names. They'll give us some weirded out looks and their PR department would beg us to change it fast, but they won't start suspecting us of megalomania just because of a tasteless name. Especially once we talk to them some more.

Legend has never been through the PRT system especially not as a Ward since he predated it. And in any case Legend does not have the same connotations as God Almighty.

Hm. On second thought all the people with really arrogant names are villains. Maybe you're right. In any case the name isn't something Taylor would pick.
Checking in Wikipedia it means Godly beings.
But if it seems too arrogant Seraphim would be fine.
Seraphim does sound fine.

Let's not go mythological on the name, considering that's their naming scheme for S-class threats and all. Luminous is positive and has no unpleasant connotations, great PRT name, and it allows any sort of energy attack to be in theme.

Is trying to use the Djinn-exploit to get unlimited Wishes with no XP or wealth cost for using them what you would consider an 'infinite loop' inappropriate for player use?

Using Acorn of far travel to effectively act at 10 times normal speed at lvl 13 would be another example. Are you okay with that sort of thing or should we cut the power levels back?

How does this spell permit getting any extra actions, much less 10x? Because I'm not seeing it.

Well at that point I'd just start enforcing the rules on Wish much more tightly. Also probably yes, that does seem like something of an infinite loop if you just keep doing it all day. It fits the theme though, so I might just institute a 'free wish per day' cap or something.

It lets you count as always being under the tree, IIRC. Combine that with Planar Shepard and a plane with fast time, and you're swimming in extra actions.

How Copying Powers Works
You are ignoring content by this member.

Okay, I have some issues with this I'd like to bring up. Firstly, it's OP. Yes, this is a munchkin quest, but really we're starting to edge into Pun-Pun territory here. Just off the top of my head, as soon as we hit Caster Level 17 we can basically kill anything by applying Sting to, say, Krieg or Ballistic. It ruins the item economy, because Tinker powers plus a few Conjuration spells, and even worse it completely disincentivises traditional spellcasting beyond a few utility spells, because why prepare a one-shot spell when you can just use that slot for a permanently active parahuman ability that doesn't even have any of the drawbacks like shard interference?

And before anyone mentions the cost or time of filling up every slot with parahuman powers - again, this is a munchkin quest. With proper applications of RAW-fuckery, neither of those things are going to be problems.

Therefore, I would like to propose the framework of an alternate system:

Catalyst Patterns

What is a Catalyst Pattern?
Well, at its core, it's a really really big spell matrix, similar to the ones any wizard or druid will memorise. However, there's a difference, in that it's passive rather than active - it contains no inherent energy beyond what's used to actually form its structure, and is not expended to create an effect. Instead, it is a framework, through which you can shape magical energy to your desired means.

To acquire this energy, you burn a prepared spell. Its magic then runs through the Pattern, gets shaped by its structure, and is released as a spell-like ability mimicking a parahuman power. Depending on what power the Pattern is based off, it may have one SLA or several to choose from, and their durations may be anywhere from instantaneous to hours per spell level, with duration of extended effects decreasing with rising power. I'll expound on this later.

How do they work?
The development rules remain basically unchanged, but you have to do development for each SLA contained in the pattern separately (treat them as spells for that purpose.) However, their application is different from traditional spellcasting.

The first time you develop a Pattern, you choose your Catalysing Attribute, from INT, WIS or CHA. This represents your methodology and approach, and will govern the save DCs and how many Pattern Ranks you can prepare. An INT-based Pattern is all straight lines and sharp edges, manipulating the magic through logic and applied principles. A WIS-based pattern is smooth and flowing, not twisting the energy but rather guiding it. A CHA-based pattern is jagged and seemingly illogical, following the thought patterns of its creator. If we ever get around to teaching other people D&D magic, this will influence our teaching style and the sort of people we'll want as students.

Each Pattern has a Rank, depending on how strong its component SLAs are and how many of them it has. A Pattern will never have a Rank lower than the spell level of its strongest SLA, but it may be higher if there are additional strong SLAs or many additional weaker ones. You may have a number of Ranks prepared at any one time equal to the ability modifier of your final Catalysing Attribute after all bonuses. If you take off an attribute-enhancing item or lose a temporary bonus in such a way that this number falls, you lose randomly-determined Patterns until you are within the limit again.

To activate an SLA from a Pattern, you burn an unspent spell slot, losing the spell it contains until you can prepare your spells again. Some Patterns may have a minimum level required to activate them, and most will determine the strength of the effect at least partially on how strong a spell you expend - more magical energy creates a stronger effect, after all. Save DCs are calculated as normal (10 + Attribute Mod + Spell Level), with your Catalysing Attribute.

Let's have an example!
Say that, somewhere from mid- to late-game, depending on how much munchkinry precisely is going on, we have managed to acquire a total INT modifier of +17 and we're using it as our Catalysing Attribute. This gives us 17 Pattern Ranks to work with; the Patterns we have prepared are:

Library of Alexandria, Rank 9
Aegis of Blood and Bone, Rank 5
The Stalking Shadows, Rank 3

All of these have extended effects, which may be turned on and off throughout their duration at will unless otherwise specified. Bear in mind that I'm coming up with these pretty much off the top of my head, so the actual specific mechanics are by no means perfectly accurate. Anything used on other people (which, admittedly, none of these can be) would have a DC of 27 + Spell Level.

The Stalking Shadows
grants only a single SLA of the same name - it's basically Gaseous Form with +10 to Hide but Vulnerability to Electricity, and is bumped to Spell Level 3 because it lets you phase through unattended objects. It has a duration of 1 hour per level of the spell burnt to fuel it.

Aegis of Blood and Bone gives two SLAs, the first of which likewise shares the name of its Pattern. It has Spell Level 5, requiring a spell of at least level 2 to power it. It lasts for two minutes per spell level, and gives Fast Healing 5 as well as immunity to nonlethal damage, critical hits, blindness, dazzling, deafness, dazing, stunning, fatigue, nausea, or sickening. Additionally, you are only fatigued when you would be exhausted, and may act as if you were healthy even when disabled or dying.

The second is flight, and is of Spell Level 3, functioning in all ways as the Wizard spell Fly. It lasts for an hour per level of the spell used to power it.

Library of Alexandria grants three SLA, two of which are Spell Level 9 requiring at least a fifth-level spell for power while the third is SL6 and needs a second-level spell to power it.

The first is Temporal Immutability, which renders you immune to physical damage and healing and all physical status effects for one round per level of the spell used to power it. Effects with the [Time] or [Spacetime] descriptors, or similar, breach this defence. The second is Pillar of the Sky, which increases your Strength score by 250 for one round per level of the spell used to power it. The third is an enhanced flight, functioning as Fly but at three times the speed, with Perfect manoeuvrability, and you may hustle as Overland Flight. It lasts for ten minutes per level of the spell used to fuel it. This may seem a little long, but it's a support utility power, so it gets its duration bumped.[/Time]
