SV digs a Hole - A Dwarf Fortress Succession Game

That's one hell of a year. Good show getting the fort to survive it! Also the were-giraffe looks extremely cool, shame you can't just release him on your enemies.

(Keas haunt my dreams, some days. Bloody birds.)

I had briefly considered leaving them locked up somewhere and their fate decided in the future, but I felt that this was the most simple solution. Exile would not have helped, and using them as a questionable defensive method eh.

The Keas in this region are incredibly aggressive/agitated and I'm honestly not sure why.

There's a bunch of rooms I hadn't shown, like the guildhall, the Mayor's quarters (done near the people so that they dont lose roots/owing to its nature as a semi-temporary thing), and a few others. Will see if I do a compilation or not. I hope Chaos's year is more calm, though I doubt it.

I'm not exactly 100% on it myself, but now there's a mechanic tracking the amount of noise and disturbance you make with nature. The more you do, the more the local wildlife gets aggressive. Make lots of noise and mess in the caverns, cavern dwellers will start attacking your fort in squads of cave fish people and the like.

At least, so I'm told.

As of v50.01, animals can become agitated, which increases their proactive desire to attack your dwarves. This behavior occurs much earlier and more frequently in Savage regions, and presumably less so in Calm regions.

Right, this is a bit of a mess but I'm sure I'll figure something out, @Duzzit congrats on handling it as well as you did and on the well written report.

Now the Mountainhome will be sending a graduate from one of its finest military academies to bolster Graspedrocks, unfortunately there might have been something of a clerical error…

Good luck with it.

Yeah, I've heard about this, but my other 2 forts hadn't seen such aggro from wildlife even though I was not in calm biomes. hnm.

Sounds very interesting. The question now is do you think you can finish your turn by Sunday the 8th, or if you need another week because of the New Years?

That werebeast could have gone a lot worse. Now I'm gonna be so paranoid about random immigrants... Doesn't help that the Necromancer in my local game is halping.

I love that the cistern is a multi-turn project, need to find some larger project that'll last a while for my go...

Yeah my second forts necromancers halped so much that i had to abandon it due to FPS death.

Year 253 - Walker of Chaos - Spring
(OOC rest of the update will come sometime this weekend)
SPRING

1st of Granite, 253

Well here I am, Gidthurid "Graspedrocks" the place I will be ruling for the next year. It still sounds so absurd, when the Queens messenger arrived and told me that "in recognition of mmy previous martial contributions to the royal family" I didn't dare say anything. Those Hammerers accompanied him didn't look like the kind of people who'd be happy to learn they had gotten the wrong dwarf. I am but a humble priest, the only interaction I ever had with the royal family was when I conducted the marital ceremony for the royal niece. Still there is no use complaining now, I just have to make the best of the situation, at least the previous rulers seem to have left extensive notes.

To begin with I order up the contruction of new farms in a newly irrigated chamber. These plots should bring much safety to our farmers who previously had to operate dangerously close to the surface, and there is plenty of room left to expand should the need be. For now I've focused on growing a wide variety of crops, with special attention paid to Plump Helmets and Pig Tails.

5th of Granite, 253

A project of the previous overseer, the smoothing out of our cistern has finished so I order the dwarves to start flooding it. Things seem to be going well so far.

11th of Granite, 253

The local Doctor Guild is demanding their own guildhall. Seeing no reason to deny such a request I approve it. Still the fact that we have enough doctors that they'd make this request is concerning, the only other profession with a large enough guild is the farmers!

25th of Granite, 253

Things seem to be going quite well so far. There has been some grumbling among the dwarves but I think I'm starting to settle in to this role. The farms are being tiled, the guild hall seems to be turning out great and we've got a large goods surplus for when the annual caravan arrives. Even with my lack of a proper education I am quite convinced we can survive anything the wilds could throw at us. Now what's next on the list? Ah yes the militia expansion my predecessor recommended. Not sure if we'll need it though, the current one seems fine enough.

28th of Granite, 253

(OOC ignore the date in the upper right, i forgot to immediately take a screenshot after the battle)
I hate to say it but we got lucky. The monster tore apart one of the children before anyone had the time to respond but the other managed to get away. Before the weregiraffe could come after her a nearby militia member got in a clean hit and decapitated it. It never got to bite anyone so there was no room for the infection to spread and no one else got harmed, though I know that is a cold comfort to the grieving parents. I've already organized a second militia squad and started carving out their barracks, this can not be allowed to happen again.

While organizing the burial I discovered to my horror that this fortress considered it perfectly normal for children to handle burials and the disposal of corpses. Children are the future of our civilization, we can't risk traumatizing them when they still retain some of their innnocence or worse force them to bury their own friends as almost happened here. I have expresssly forbidden this practice going forward.

27th of Slate, 253

22 migrants from the Mountainhome have arrived putting us at 91 souls in total. I've unearthed my predecessors design for a second bedroom complex and authorized the dwarves to start work on it. By the looks of things we could already have accommodated this wave but I want us prepared for the next one.

1st of Hematite, 253

Work on the new bedrooms is proceeding excellently. We lacked enough items to furnish all of the new ones so I've ordered some more be crafted. Should there be need for even more room in the future I'd recommend either mirroring this design or putting new wings on a different floor to maximize travel efficiency.

The new militia is also starting to take form. I only hope we won't have need of them in the seasons to come.

(OOC still getting the hang of writing this, let me know if there is stuff you guys want me to focus more on)

I wanted y'all to know I finally got the game running and it's a treat, a litte a alarmed at what I'm seeing in this thread but it wouldn't be DF if the world wasn't murderous would it?

Seems like there's a weregiraffe infestation across the area, yeah. Some days DF is smooth sailing, and some days it all explodes into chaos and blood.

Suprised you lacked the furniture for the bedrooms, thought there was a standing order for beds/cabinets/chests(well, coffers since stone more plentiful) Cool stuff otherwise :).

The spot we're on is fairly aggressive, especially those damn keas...seriously those things are such a menace.

Year 253 - Walker of Chaos - Summer - Winter
SUMMER

2nd of Malachite, 253

The second day of Summer we are beset by a trio of Goblin Kidnappers. While our militia manages to drive them off none of them are slain. I fear the Goblins will only grow bolder.

21st of Hematite, 253

One of our dwarves is possesed by a strange mood. Luckily she easily finds all the materials she needs and quickly produces a wonderful artifact.

1st of Malachite, 253
The following month we are greeted by another wave of migrants, only 7 this time but the rate at which they are arriving is worrying. Luckily enough time has passed for our stocks of furniture to be replenished.

One of my projects also finish around this time, I've expanded the farmers workshop close to the surface into a dedicated area for processing pig tails. While we alreadyt had a loom it was located deep down in the caverns. This new loom will allow us to turn our Pig Tail harvests into a bountiful source of cloth, the leftmost stockpile only accepts Pig Tails while the rightmost accepts Pig Tail products. I also set about constructing 2 more stills to ensure our booze can keep apace with our growing population.

The remainder of the summer passes by without anything of note happening.

AUTUMN

17th of Limestone, 253

In autumn the caravan from the Mountainhome arrives. The fort is not experiencing any particular shortages at the time so I opt to trade some gems for a mix of cloths, seed, leather and barrels. The merchants seem quite taken with our goods and the liaison informs me that the capital will pay extra should we have more for them next year. Since we are doing all right I opt to only request seeds for next year, right now we don't need more food production but if we want to make full use of the new farming area more seeds would be quite useful.

2nd of Timber, 253

Another wave of migrants have arrived. While we can accommodate them the sheer rate at which the population is growing concerns me. I order the miners to start work on another expansion of the bedroom floor.

10th of Timber, 253

Work has barely begun on the new bedrooms before a monster straight from the myths arrives. A rampaging Ettin has been sighted heading straight for our little fort. I can only hope that our militia will be enough to slay the beast.

What kind of soldier takes their own kid with them into mortal combat? Apparently the kind we have.

The monster is slain but it took one of our own down with it (luckily not the kid). While everyone is battered and bruised the fort will live to see another day. I decide to order the construction of two more barracks, while we don't have the equipment to support more squads right now I want the infrastructure to be in place.

WINTER

3rd of Moonstone, 253

And wouldn't you know it, the Goblins are back. This time they've brought 3 Kidnappers and 6 Bowmen. Our steel arms and armor net us a victory but the beasts left one of our soldiers heavily wounded. I am deeply grateful for the hospital my predecessor built, without it things might have been much worse.

I celebrated too soon. While our soldiers were returning to the fort a flock of Giant Bluejays descended upon the fort. They tore one of the children to shreds in mere moments and have started a sustained harassment campaign against our dwarves. I try to muster the milita against them but the beasts seem to take a wicked pleasure in only targeting the young and infirm. Efforts to close down the fort have all failed as the children disregard any orders to stay inside and keep running out of the doors. If I lock down everything now I will be sacrificing the lives of our young to do so.

13th of Moonstone, 253

With the wounded piling up and animals being slaughtered left and right by these infernal birds I order the expansion of our cemetery. I hate that it's come to this but the airborne scourge is taking a heavy tools on our beloved animal companions (luckily they haven't claimed any more dwarf lives).

17th of Opal, 253

I spoke too soon. The birds retreated and gave us a few weeks of peace only to return and claim a new crimson harvest and this time they only seem to be interested inn Dwarf flesh. Poor Cog was only the first victim. All in all the birds would claim more lives than all other threats we faced this year combined.

1st of Granite, 254
The airborne scourge yet plagues us, their blood thirst seems sated for now but I have no doubt they will be back. I have failed to keep my flock safe and have no choice but to resign. To my successor I implore you to make our defenses your priority. We've got plenty of food, drink and wealth at our hands but our people can not freely wander around their own home without risking death. Please keep them safe like I never could. I return now to spiritual affairs in the hopes I can find more success there than in the temporal realm.

(OOC we don't seem to have any organized cults in the fort yet but if somebody could prioritize my dwarf for a priest position once we get those I'd appreciate it.)

And so yet another year ends. It seems your successor has their work cut out for them! Hopefully some crossbows can be organized to hunt the avian menace plaguing our dear fort. :V

@Vyslanté , do you think you can complete your turn by the 15th? Or do you think you will require an extension?

Interesting year for you it seems. The birds in the region truly are aggressive indeed.

Edit: Important if we do try to do marksdwarves squad.

In hindsight I should have tried to organize a crossbow brigade back in Spring. But our military seemed to perform so well against the other threats it was too late to get anything proper going by the time the birbs attacked it was too late to do anything properly. I'd hoped to get more done but things like bedrooms and ore hunting took a surprising amount of time. Hopefully the groundwork allows the next set of rulers to do more interesting stuff.

So, I want to apologize for dropping out here as well, I am realizing that my demands in daily life are likely going to increase soon enough (much sooner than anticipated ) that the only games I might be able to participate in at a healthy way will be the really casual ones.

I've been loving my own first fortress (How did I lose 20 hours in less than a week???) and reading these updates the experience is addicting and rewarding even when things go terribly wrong so just know it's not from a decreased interest but more of a realization that some of my IRL projects are going to require a larger time investment than I initially anticipated due to changes in my life that were not existant at the time of the original interest check.

@LurkingWreck I appreciate the prelude to reaching the site and the ever-broken wagons being part integrated into your narration.
As well as the idea of zones being ''sketches''.
I also feel a little silly for not using discord as a hosting site for images with any intentionality before, I guess I was worried about it's (relatively poor privacy practices, but compared with the sites of tried before those look nigh inconsequential and almost make the company look saintly since they are fairly selective about what they read and attempt to monetize for the time being anyway.

That is a shame, but I understand. You'll be removed from the list promptly. Hope you still have time to watch us spiral further into madness though!
