SV digs a Hole - A Dwarf Fortress Succession Game

Oh so its the military Dwarves who clutter up bedrooms with rotting food? Good to know. How to fix?

When military dwarves go offduty they remove their uniform and drop the food they carry in their backpacks.

Now, the easy way to solve this is to make dwarves keep their uniform when in civilian mode (Which generally you wanted anyway, no point in making them remove their armor ever).

That said i still recommend to destroy all backpacks in the fort, because eating from a backpack doesn't give happy thoughts, unlike eating in a legendary dinning room.

its been a while since ive actually booted up the game, but I had my dwarves keep uniform always. hnm. I really should play again, though I've already forgotten how to make marksdwarf squads work properly.

(Baby dragons btw are apparently a thing in the beta branch which sounds cool)

We're having a serious grumpiness problem in this fort, oh dear
just one guy who got smashed in the tavern and threw a tantrum. XD

I've found several dining rooms, none used for eating because all the meals end up in a stockpile on the other end of the fortress...*shootmenow.gif*

Year 257 - Kaernetron - Summer
Overseer's Log
Graspedrocks, Summer of 257

1st Hematite
I've had a few words with the bonecrafters and they promised to keep a supply of random bones for strange moods from now on.
...
While ordering the workshops removed where our fungus tree farm can now be set up, I notice not a single farm plot (which have to go, too) is being fertilized. Bookkeeper Plonk tells me we have around fifty bars of potash...somewhere.
...
I feel a headache coming on. How can I get a headache?!

3rd Hematite
The yearly goblin siege has arrived! As the remaining stuff outside is made up of corpses, waterbuckets, x<clothes>x and the odd arrow, they're welcome to it.

11th Hematite
Solon, one of our hammerdorfs, is taken by a fey mood and claims a forge, screaming for gems and logs...Wait, what is that sound?

I've been assured the second cavern layer is sealed off from the rest of the fortress, so back to sorting stockpiles (or dying horribly).

17th Hematite
Seeing as we are still alive, Onul Soulscave has been re-elected as mayor. Strange, I can't remember any election being held...

21st Hematite
Solon has finished her construction and become a legendary armorsmith. I deem her value to Graspedrocks higher when working in the forges as opposed to swinging a hammer at goblins and retire her from the military.

13th Malachite

And now we have hatchlings of the big blue variety. In other news, stockpiles around the forges are getting sorted, but I have a confession to make.
You see, I might have made slight miscalculation with the flow values when watering the tree farm, as I usually only deal with magma and my cousins with waterworks... on the other hand, we now have an indoor swimmingpool and the citizens are being introduced to this concept called 'bathing'.

17th Malachite
As a note for future overseers, while the scholar Lokum Rimmartyr may look like a formidable recruit for the military, he is missing something important...

28th Malachite
The mayor has demanded the construction of a pair of windows. I've decided to indulge her with the understanding that, should she follow this up with demanding they be installed in her rooms (underground and not even close to overlooking a cavern), I will toss her into the pool myself.

On the surface, the goblins have grown bored with the lack of dwarves to torture and started entertaining themselves by shooting at a giant hamster.

10th Galena
Work on the new dining hall with adjacent food and drink stores continues at a good pace, meaning I won't have to hear dwarves complaining about having to eat without a table for much longer!

The goblins continue to amuse themselves at the cost of the local wildlife, until..

I knew the enemies of dwarvenkind would fight each other; it was only a matter of time.

12th Galena

Roofing over the trade depot and apiary was a fine idea, but the abandoned roof access for the marksdwarves turns out to be a fatal weakness. Either that, or the drawbridges do not seal properly...
We lose two war dogs and a pair of pets, for which we gain another pair of females as well as a male giant bluejay in cages.

16th Galena

I'm worried about Nil. He keeps slipping into depression, even though there's a perfectly serviceable temple to Zim. Okay, it is more of a hole in the ground, but it's got doors and altars! Besides, our engravers have more important things to do, like smoothing the

Glad the bluejays hatched, was worried they were bugged. Also nice to see that the bees are still getting some love.

As a note for future overseers, while the scholar Lokum Rimmartyr may look like a formidable recruit for the military, he is missing something important...

Yeah, I caught him trying to hit a weregiraffe with his crutch. The spirit is definitely appreciated but I question the effectiveness.

Good news, autumn so far has been casualty-free! Bad news, no update today.
I just spent what felt like two hours marking junk for sale and need a break before trading. Having only a single friendly civilization to trade with lets a lot of stuff accumulate.

Send squads to contact more civs then.

Just 1 dork asking for one time tribute and they will start sending caravans.

Year 257 - Kaernetron - Autumn
Overseer's Log
Graspedrocks, Autumn of 257

1st Limestone
I'm starting to suspect dwarven stupidity may be contagious, given I've just remembered the furnace operators won't melt our junk without an explicit work order - while our butchers will slaughter anything they're told to without a second thought.

3rd Limestone
The goblins have grown bored of killing random wildlife and buggered off. As the fortress is nearing an acceptable state, I've decided to lift the lockdown and replenish our wood stores.

6th Limestone
And of course, Alath gets into a fight with a giant bluejay near the brook. He kills the bird with a practiced crossbow bash, crushing its head.

7th Limestone

11th Limestone
The caravan from the mountainhome has arrived, a great opportunity to further clean out the fortress...
and Nil slips into depression again.

12th Limestone
While compiling a list of junk to be sold off, I stumble across another headscratcher...
I'm so not cleaning this up, on the pile it goes!

13th Limestone
The outpost liason ambushed me in the middle of the dimple cup stockpile, nagging about import agreements.
I told her to send seeds we're not currently drowning in, instruments because sooner or later someone's going to want some and several chickens for our egg production.
All she wants in exchange is krutzing windows. Not that she's likely to get them, what with the amount of junk this place seems to produce. Unless my replacement feels like giving the glassmaker a workout...
When I remembered to check our livestock for milkable animals, the liaison had already run off, leaving me with a copy of the

24th Limestone
All our trade goods have finally been hauled to the depot, but our broker Doren prefers to drink and chill out in a temple, instead of doing his job... and now Onul the mayor has banned the export of the two windows I had intended to offload to the caravan.

28th Limestone
Our broker is still refusing to work and now there's migrants coming in. Of note are a suturer, an actually competent glassmaker, another bookbinder, a dancer and some voluntold recruits for the military.

2nd Sandstone
The caravan is growing impatient and so am I; I suspect Doren is planning to live in the temple full time. Well, congratulations Plonk, you're now pulling triple duty!
I'll be sure to do something nice for your office.

11th Sandstone
As the completely bought out caravan is packing up our junk, Ducim - the dancer from the last bunch of migrants - is taken by a mood and lays claim to The Bone Zone.
...
In other news, the birds are now fighting amongst each other.

14th Sandstone
Nil again slips into depression. Further investigation reveals he has no family in Graspedrocks, no friends and just over a hand full of acquaintances.

19th Sandstone
Ducim has finished her work.
To be honest, I'm slightly disappointed. All this secrecy and not a single bone was used in its construction.

28th Sandstone
By Armok's rusty greaves, the only competent dwarf in this fortress has been killed by a giant hamster! Plonk was avenged by Lurking, who struck the killing blow after a long chase.
...
Sakzul! Investigate Doren, I smell a conspiracy!
...
What do you mean, open and shut case? Death by wildlife, no foul play? Begone, incompetent!

3rd Timber
The True Birding Season arrives, claiming the life of Risen Solontat, who'd rather grab something from the surface than hoof it to the burrow like a sane dwarf.
...
We are once more on lockdown and the rest of autumn passes peacefully.

Watching a combat live seems to erase custom naming on dwarves. I caught this error in time with Lurking, but can no longer find Rhel or Karlito. If someone would kindly look up their last names and professions, I'll restore them. I'm asking in the thread as I'd rather not risk messing up the save by opening a second instance of plonk's save.

I was Alath Zimathel. And I have to admit I'm amused by Alath's continued hate of all things avian! :D

Year 257 - Kaernetron - Winter
Overseer's Log
Graspedrocks, Winter of 257

1st Moonstone
Given we have 43 worshippers of Zim in the fortress - almost half the population - it is a good thing I've ordered the Diamond Sanctum expanded. With our lack of diamonds and platinum being earmarked for the possible arrival of the queen, I'll have to default to gold and silver for decorations.

3rd Moonstone
The goblins are back and immediately use a giant bluejay for target practice. I've decided to let the enemies of dwarvenkind thin out their ranks before opening the death tunnel.

7th Moonstone
...or not.
The goblins have left, maybe to grab more ammo?
Nah, I'm sure there're enough bolts laying around to fight and win a small war... or shoot a single big bird.
Then again, if the greenskins are half as stupid as the alcohol vaporators I've had to look after, that possibility is entirely realistic.

16th Moonstone
Nil again slips into depression, but at least he's made a friend in the meantime.

7th Opal
Nish the bird-tamer has convinced me to separate the giant bluejays from the rest of our poultry. He argued that, with too many animals in a too small space, it is only a matter of time before we have a bloodbath in the egg farm.
Considering mature bluejays grow as large as grizzly bears, I've designated the former ore stockpile for his use.

24th Opal
Water levels in our tree farm have finally lowered to a level where improvements to the drainage system can be made.
...
Eral, the engraver-trainee, is taken by a fey mood and claims the bowyer's workshop.

2nd Obsidian
Eral, I am disappoint! Seriously, a bow? Do you see any elves around here somewhere? And what's up with all those boat references, did you dream of Koganusan? Although, it would be elephants then, wouldn't it?

7th Obsidian
The mayor feels this is a good time to re-impose her ban on mace exports. I've neglected to tell her that we neither sell nor produce maces in this fortress.

28th Obsidian
Winter draws to a close and I'm a bit sad the temple to Zim wasn't entirely finished.
But increasing drainage flow for the tree farm was more important, as we can expect to flood it regularly.
There's still a lot of stuff to pick up on the surface, but cleaning out the trade depot should happen before we even think about that.
...
As night falls, I've finished my final report and hear The Door opening. At least the krutzers who kept me here for a year are true to their word. I can hear the representatives of the Doormaker's Guild approaching.
...
What's that? To a place called Furnacedghost? You must be kidding!
...
Nah, I'm onto you! Begone! I'd rather stay here and weave thread into orderly patterns than be shanghai'd into another overseership!

Well, that's that.
I didn't do any large expansions, churn out tons of masterwork items or start megaprojects because I felt it was more important to sort out the stockpile situation (so stuff like that can be done in the future).
Not to offend plonk or anyone else (just the example that comes to mind), but when the ore stockpile is not on the same z-level as the smelters and on the other side of the fortress, furnace operators spend more time hauling ore than smelting it. Same with anything heavy like slabs or stones.

Aside from tweaking a few work orders, I kept my hands off the textile industry. I took one look at the wiki, saw how fiddly/micromanage-y dye production is and swore to myself to never touch that. What I'm trying to say is: someone who knows how it works should check if dye is actually being produced.

In order for dwarves to actually meet their 'acquire object' need, I've disabled bins in the Trade Goods stockpile. If you change that stockpile's settings, please be sure to set bins to zero again. I've been reminded of this here the hard way.

The quarantine chambers and paused wall constructions on z-level 22 are still around, I've just deleted the associated burrows so I didn't have to scroll several pages to find the Evacuation burrow.

The fortress is isolated from the third cavern layer by a pair of locked hatches on z-level -56. Note that the stairs further down actually drop into open space, so be sure to keep those hatches locked if a flying forgotten beast shows up.

The glassmaker is set to produce a moderate amount of toys to practice her skill and keep the children happy.

Large serrated discs are being forged to train up weaponsmithing and for use in further traps.

I've taken a better look around the world map and found elven settlements 8 days travel to the west. I suggest sending someone with wanderlust like Nil the Depressed if someone wants to make contact.

Finally, we have a crapton of furniture stockpiled. Either place it somewhere sensible or dig out more storage space.

Former Overseers:
Year 250: Lurking - Alive! (for now)
Year 251: Kadmus - Deceased
Year 252: Duzzit - Deceased
Year 253: Walker - Deceased
Year 254: Karlito - Exiled ???
Year 255: Rhel - Alive! (for now)
Year 256: plonk - Deceased
Year 257: Kaernetron - Alive! (for now)

I've restored the naming on Rhel's dwarf but was unable to locate Karlito's. We have one Ingiz Rifotadil alive and with children, but his relations screen shows no wife so I assume Karlito was exiled at the end of the weregiraffe episode.

Save sent. Please let me know if there's any problem with downloading the file, @Broken25 .

After re-reading the thread (and noticing all my questions could've been answered by a quick skim through), it's quite ironic the dwarf I picked as my avatar at the very beginning of my turn has the poor memory trait.

Year 258 - Broken25 - Spring-Autumn (Scroll Down)
FIRST OF GRANITE, 258

Following her majesty orders, i have taking control of a little known mining outpost in the northern continent. The strategic value of this place is obvious, being our mos forward base in the war against the Fat Seducctions, but upon arrival i have discovered the military is awfully out of shape.

The Militia commander is a comedian that barely knows how to fight:

Meanwhile, several hammerdwarves with clear skill and a noted record have been expulsed of the military for unclear reasons:

Corruption, or Negligence? Or maybe someone disbanded an squad without noticing because the UI is awful. Either way, this ends today. I will apoint a new commander and a new training regimen. Real soldiers shouldn't waste time in civilian tasks.

FYI:
The axedorf squad is composed of my year's fresh voluntolds. When I got the save, I found the (then) second hammerdorf squad with a single member, who transferred to the first squad when Solon retired for armorsmithing duty. I may have also retired a few dwarfettes, as the ladies have this annoying habit of carrying their babies into battle.

/Edit:
Of course, you're free to ham up your predecessors' incompetence in all matters military. :)

Our newly reconstituted hammer squad has no trouble dealing with the invaders:

I decided to inspect the magma forged. Then i was promptly informed that we don't, in fact, have any.

Intolerable.

I order our miners to dig quickly and deeply, until we reach the magma sea. Fortunately, it isn't far from our deepest mines:

We have made a great discovery. An obsidian pillar, rich in precious gems.

One of our oldest miners even swears he has seen the gleam of Adamantine below the magma, although honestly i don't see anything myself:

Tall tales or not, this mine has great riches indeed. I order to start working on it inmediately.

25 Granite:

The mine has started giving its precious fruit. The highest quality gems i have ever seen. Shame our little forts lacks any trained jeweller:

6 of slate:

The miners unleashed some strange beast, trapped in the rock:

Bigger than an elephant and capable of expelling strong bursts of sharp ash. Fortunately, most of our miners were able to evacuate in time.

Most.

Poor Cog didn't made it. Fortunately, he was a mere clanless dwarf, with no family and no guild. Nobody will miss him much.

Our hammerdwarves have proven their worth once again. A single blow to the head was all it took to crush the beasts brain.

Still, it's clear than the mine is more dangerous than i anticipated. I shall treat it carefully from now on.

Please don't unleash the circus.

i doubt i will even reach the adamantine in my turn lol

Adamantine mining is a really involved process now.

(Honestly i released that demon on purpose because it feels very out of character to use the proper mining protocols without seeing at least one demon first).
