Information brokers are usually people who live many social rungs lower than the Daimyo (I'm assuming it's the same as LotroL) however, not as far from merchants and other people we can deal with for directions

These folk are easier to work with than the mayor since we're not as far up. I'd also feel more comfortable working with someone with less muscle and it doesn't seem obvious that the Lady Daimyo would have more information on the topic than a well connected merchant or local Vermillion Sigh dealer

Plus tropes about local lords being callous with assets and Lady Maita's attitude appear to match. I'm surprised she didn't try to seem easier to work with, she is inexperienced

Shrooms, is there any insight/thoughts the trio would have on these topics?

There are definitely different tiers of info brokers, but the most successful ones can rake in millions if they're good at the job (the one you're going to meet is among the better brokers)

There are probably people elsewhere with more promising opportunities, but none in this immediate region outside of the ones you already know of (the Ishida, who will likely distrust you no matter what, and the merchants, who are actively protected by the Ishida). You can try moving on to another town, but the PCs don't really know where they're going beyond just picking a road and following it.

Her Deceit is better than anyone's Empathy (the skill you use to uncover people's Aspects), so you have no way to really be completely sure you've seen her 'true self' so to speak. All you can really do is make your best assumptions based on what you've observed

I'm aligned with avoiding risk but not sure what the best steps are to managing it

Plus I worry it'll be a whole update to reach a similarly risky opportunity and then we're more exposed which makes taking covert action difficult

If we did approach the Samurai or Merchants, what's the best manner of approach?

To approach the merchants covertly is liable to irritate the Samurai should our presence be discovered. Should we be caught, violence or arrest which puts us in poor positions as well

Doing a service for the Samurai without asking might be the play. Risky in its own way but honor may demand they repay the favor

[X] Enough wasting time, this guy is a drinker with a temper, kill him, make it look like a bar fight that got out of hand.

I'm a little worried about crossing the samurai bodyguards he probably has, but trying to get involved in local politics as nobodies who know nothing sounds like a really bad idea.

[X] Tell Lady Maita to shove it and leave.

It's not that I don't think we can manage to do this and not get caught (though if we are caught, we're toast). It's that killing some dude who's pushing up against the feudal lord system, for said Daimyo, just to get the sort of info we could get from a decent map (yes yes, I know they're much more rare here), to contact an info broker, to just get a sense of direction?

Like, the kids will end up gaining their share of TYS points and doing rough stuff. But killing a civilian, just in case makes our lives slightly easier without concrete reward? That feels like a big leap, for a small gain. Plus, non-trivial chance of Enmity with the samurai of a country we're trying to stick around in seems risky.

[X] Steal a map and leave town.

[X] Enough wasting time, kill this guy and get to Yamagakyo pronto.

We're ninja. Killing bitches is in the job description, even if we didn't go missing nin.

[X] Action Plan: Refusing the Call

  • Ignore Lady Maita's request and skip town.
    • Buy, or steal a map so we know where to go to get to Yamagakyō.
[X] Action Plan: Finish the Job

  • Plan the muder of Sada Yoshiro
    • A tavern brawl might kill him but not if he's constantly surrounded by samurai bodyguards.
    • Could we poison him with the toad venom? We would still need to escape the notice of his guards.
    • Does he go anywhere without them? Do they sleep in his house? Surely he's not protected 24/7...
    • Try to identify junior samurai and make any move when those ones are on duty. Ideally wait for when he's totally unprotected.
    • Identify or manufacture (via distraction) a hole in the guard coverage and make a move -- either a robbery/home invasion gone wrong, tavern fight, or poison him. Make every effort to get away clean.

[X] Action Plan: Dishonorable Dogs

  • Rob Lady Maita
    • As recompense for her insinuation that we're honorless Ninja Dogs, let us act dishonorably
    • The team first does information gathering at the local bars and nightlife, particularly trying to get insight on servants, guards, estate and possible targets for robbery of Lady Maita. Avoid Samurai, avoid risk
    • Use different disguises for information gathering and the robbery
    • Kenzō's more focused on running interference during info gathering because intimidation will garner attention
    • If there's potential insider assets (existing grifters to pin the blame on, folk that dislike the lady), consider making a plan with them without revealing our status as ninja. Intimidation may come in handy here
    • Rob the good Lady, focusing first on maps and low risk targets. Opportunistically steal some of that fancy red furniture or other items that come up (Use Storage scrolls). Information is also a good target. We can sell stuff in another town to put some distance between us and the crime. If everything goes successfully and this isn't asking too much for one update, end the update with arriving to a new city

In the interest of avoiding a split vote, I made a more detailed version of the "kill this guy" option, please consider voting for it.

Still bribeable by the way. I accept souls, pledges of 1 vote in the future within common sense bounds, and arguments supporting why you feel a given plan is better or at least more interesting.

I don't really think robbing this lady is a remotely good idea, she seems vengeful enough to hire Samurai to track us down and our Stealth is poor enough that we can't really break contact effectively.
