Man is it a shock to see this updated, but realistically I would have had to reread the entire story before I felt comfortable voting anyways so I haven't lost a ton.

Still really glad to see this come back, and if I finish rereading this thing before Roarian finishes his summary of the story so far, I can always try to write a quick one of my own for the rest of you who don't have the free time to reread one of your old favorite stories.

This feels weird. It's literally what defence contractors are, but it's being treated as a revelation, like Tony simply /didn't/ realise he was making weapons, and those weapons were being used.

Yes Tony knew exactly what was going on, the point was the 'old Tony stark' simply didn't /care/ about any of that. He was a war profiteer and he didn't care because he never saw or experienced any of the consequences for his actions, except for a fat paycheck and friends in the military.

The whole point of the cave and ambush is that Tony finally experiences the real consequences of building these weapons, and it helps him /care/ about those consequences now that he's experienced them a bit. Not realise what he's doing in the first place.

Also it feels strange that he feels so sorry for his captors. Yes chemical weapons are evil, but that's half from a painful death, and half because they are indiscriminate, don't just 'degrade' so fast, and can cover a very wide area. Using them in the cave on his captors... He doesn't really care if its indiscriminate, there weren't any innocents there! And that's not even considering that apparently it causes a 'painless quick death' if breathed in.
Dude, that qualifies it for legal execution in the US, its better than the injection if it works just by breathing.

Maybe if you wanted Tony to feel so much guilt you should have had it not be painless and quick on breathing in, or maybe have him stumble across some other captured innocent people while exiting the cave. Or maybe even have the doctor be the one who gets a tear in the suit from a bullet and dies painfully and messily in front of Stark.

All those things would be way better for causing guilt than just... killing your terrorist captors.

I swear, some American's views on guns are absolutely bizarre. The idea that they someone keep people safe despite demonstrably leading to more gun violence and homicide rates when compared to any other country with better gun control...
Its just so odd to be reading the story and then this sudden inderjection which makes no sense comes around. Its just really nutty.

I'll be honest, it's been too long for me to have a good idea of what exactly I was thinking at the time I wrote that, but at any rate it's not from me holding 'american views on guns' since I'm not even American, nor a conservative for that matter.

Most likely logic here is that I went with 'Stark's a billionaire who made big bucks off the military and grew up in the lap of luxury, so he'd probably trend conservative on various issues' and slotted in some of the usual associated positions. He seems like the type to bank on the second amendment, judging from his whole privatizing world peace with a weaponized armor thing, and for all that canon Stark stops selling weapons, he sure doesn't leave home without them, nor does he seem to favor disarmament...
 
That line always did jump out as seeming out of place for inside of Tony Stark's head. He's never been one for any of the work of actually maintaining his position as a billionaire, and this is supposed to be after his big epiphany about how his "ironmongery" was actually affecting the world.

When I read that, I assumed it was more literally offence versus defence. The difference being Tony Stark designing the jericho missile, and him designing better bullet proof armor for soldiers.
