Springtime of Nations: Heavenly Dawn

It looks like the voting has died down, so I'm going to close a little early so I can start writing.

[X] Plan Hope for a Good Outcome, Prepare for a Bad One
-[X] The King should argue that the provisions of the treaty were unclear and should be rewritten to better reflect the change in relations between Great Britain and Japan.
-[X] The King should be imperious and attempt to impress the delegation.
-[X] Japan should prepare to go to war.

We are not yet strong enough to endure the sort of problems that demanding wholesale abrogation of the treaty would cause, but we should at least try for a negotiated outcome that lessens them. To do that, we should negotiate with dignity and strength, because the British won't respect servility or a blasé attitude.

After the death of Alexander I, a reformist coup in favor of his brother Konstantin succeeds, leading to political turmoil in Russia. A Persian invasion through the Caucasus, prompted by British agents, humiliates the new regime.

I'm sure this won't happen to us.

One thing we should do in the long-term is leverage our somewhat positive relationship with Russia against the other Great Powers. Pursuing some sort of agreement with them should be a priority for future governments. What's even better is that the Russians are opposed to the British geopolitically, so there's a lot of potential.

Similar logic to the other plan except I think any war with the British is something we're still profoundly unprepared for and accepting punishment will be less ruinous than trying to slug it out.

Our treasury is critical and worsening and the only nation that somewhat likes us is Russia who the British just finished punishing. We are in no position to even prepare for war.

I don't expect to go to war. I don't want to go to war. But I find it fully possible we'll find ourselves in conflict.

We are unprepared for war, even defensively, and even if Britain doesn't want to invade, they can easily destroy what trade we've tried to build. We really need to make inroads with another European power as a counterplay before we pick any fights like this. So try to bargain and take the hit if we can't.

We would rather negotiate, but we will go to war if we have to.

(Don't call our bluff Don't call our bluff Don't call our bluff...)
