Dammit, how did I miss that? Works with Hana's mother.

And yeah, it was a stupid idea, but I promised crazy theories and I always try to fulfill my promises.

And it was fun to read the chapters again looking for clues, even if I suck at that kind of thing.

Any infuriatingly vague helpful hints for what else I missed and should pay more attention to? :D
Well you already found some stuff, so that's good. :D

Omake: Little Garden

This story is a lie. It takes place a few years later, to the degree it takes place at all, but it's out of continuity.

"Kyaaaa—!"

With a large enough splash to rival a waterspout, a trio of teenagers announced their presence in their new world. There'd been a number of watery shells standing in their way, in mid-air, so they didn't hit hard enough that she needed to do anything.

But really, the designers of this world had no common sense. That was her first thought; otherwise, why would their entry point be kilometers up in the air?

It had been obvious right from the start that there were designers. Her song magic had snagged, on the way home, and she'd been pulled off course—something like that had happened, so here she was. She hoped it was an accident. She'd only been away for a day, and already she was starting to get homesick.

Half an hour, then she could try again. In the meantime, she might as well see where she'd ended up today. After all—

The stars shone brightly, nothing but points of light at the edge of the universe. An edge that was less than a light-hour away.

She'd paid careful attention when she was pulled here.

The horizon curved, but only slightly, suitably for a planet the size of a star.

And it'd be a pity to not look around while she could.

She flew down to join the other three, who were just pulling themselves out of the lake. As she did so, the corners of her mouth curved upwards.

Probably, in a situation like this, she ought to be scared. A third universe, one clearly artificial, and one that had pulled her in while she was passing by. Probably she should be hiding, waiting for her chance to escape, but if someone capable of building a place like this was out to get her, then (she reasoned) she was probably doomed anyway.

Nothing jumped out at her as she touched down, and the rabbit-girl hiding behind a bush didn't look very dangerous. Well, maybe she could make some friends while she looked around?

———

"—And you, the one floating in midair? I hesitate to suggest it, but are you the one who called us here?"

She'd seen no reason to hurry, so she arrived in the middle of their self-introductions. Flying patiently was slower than falling, after all.

The one who was asking was a dark-haired teenage girl wearing formal clothes, whose imperious look didn't seem out of place despite the drenched state of those clothes. As Hana touched down, she found that they could look each other straight in the eyes; they were the same height, despite their differing age. The same went for the other, less flashily dressed one.

They were both visibly older than her.

"I'm not. Asuka, right?"

The girl nodded. "I didn't think so. You have good ears, to hear us from all the way up there."

Oh, so they'd noticed her.

"Hana Vanis Bartel. It's nice meeting you—and Izayoi and Yō, of course."

"Likewise. Same situation as the rest of us?"

"If you mean, did I get a letter inviting me here…"

Asuka nodded. Yō looked indifferent. Izayoi was tossing a coin from hand to hand, and had completely left the conversation.

"Even if I had, I wouldn't have come. I have some questions to ask of the person in charge."

A bush in the background seemed to shrink in on itself. Although, to Hana's eyes, the cause was obviously that the rabbit hiding there was clutching her head and shaking it in denial, all the while mouthing 'no'. She might not need to go very far.

"Hmm." Asuka frowned. "It's all fine and dandy that we got summoned, but kidnapping little girls is a step too far. Speaking of which, why isn't there anyone around? In this situation, shouldn't there be someone here to explain what that 'Little Garden' mentioned in the invitation is all about?"

"Without getting an explanation, it doesn't seem clever to leave this place."

"At the same time, I don't think being too calm is good…"

Neither Asuka nor Yō seemed very comfortable. Izayoi looked between them, then let out a sigh.

"I guess there's no other choice than to ask the one lurking over there."

The bush jumped.

"Oh, you noticed too?" Asuka asked.

"Of course. I'm undefeated in hide-and-seek."

"If they stand upwind, I'll notice even if I don't want to…"

"I saw her while I was coming in for a landing," Hana said, blinking once at Yō's admission. Smell was one sense she was okay with not having optimised.

The three of them all glared at the rabbit, while Hana wondered what she'd gotten herself into. The chat had been interesting, but she'd expected something more. The one who'd made this universe would hardly be hiding in a bush.

———

"I'm sorry! I'm very sorry!"

The one apologising was Kuro Usagi, who had knelt on the ground and was prostrating herself to Hana. She looked absolutely mortified.

"I only meant to summon people who wanted to come! Rather, that's the only thing that should be possible… and I only had three letters…"

Kuro the rabbit was now biting her lip. (Shurelia would love meeting her, Hana thought, feeling an urge to pull her ears.)

That aside, Izayoi had stepped behind her and was grinning—though, he wasn't looking—which didn't stop Asuka from glaring at him at all. Even Yō let out a little sigh.

"Stand up, or I'm the one who'll get embarrassed," she said quietly. When Kuro still made no move to get up, she braced herself and dragged her to her feet. Finally, noticing Izayoi at last, Kuro squeaked and blushed red.

"U-uhm." Kuro cleared her throat. "Then, let me explain…"

Yō had wandered off to a nearby tree, and was trying to coax a bird down from its branch. Asuka was wringing out her pants as best she could without taking them off, and Izayoi was simply looking towards the horizon, where the world seemed to end in a gigantic waterfall.

Kuro slumped.

"There, there." She felt an urge to pat the head of the rabbit-girl, who was now sitting seiza-style on the grass, and did so. "I'm still here, so please go ahead and tell me."

"Before I do so, how old are you?"

She sighed. Well, at least she looked the right age right now. Hopefully Kuro wouldn't be like Sono and try to protect her because she was young, but Hana still didn't want to lie.

"Twelve," she said. Kuro nodded, and started explaining.

A world of nothing but games. A world where your possessions, your skills, your very life could be traded through "gift games"—that was how Kuro Usagi described it to her, over the next little while, and if Hana hadn't expected to leave again very soon, she'd be feeling some trepidation over that description. She tried to make it sound entertaining, but she'd clearly been thrown by Hana's appearance, and her heart wasn't in it; even when the other three appeared beside her to listen, she still spent more time emphasizing that she'd take care of Hana, than that she should do anything.

Which was silly, especially if she'd be the oldest one there. (Other than the three other newcomers, whom she felt didn't count; they'd wanted to come.)

Eventually it turned into a more detailed explanation for the other three, then an impromptu game of find-the-queen on a table full of cards, which Izayoi won through the rather eye-widening trick of first flipping every card simultaneously. There hadn't been a rule against that.

Hana spent most of that time resting while enjoying the sun, though. A few too many things were going on for her to want to interrupt, and they all looked a little hard to get along with. Except for Asuka, maybe, but she was too formal.

About as soon as the game was over, she walked over to make her goodbyes. Somewhere inside her, a number of generators started running self-tests in preparation for the next couple of minutes.

"Well, it's been nice meeting you—"

Izayoi and Kuro Usagi were arguing loudly about something. To be precise, Kuro Usagi was being loud, while Izayoi calmly stated his points whenever she ran out of breath.

Yō was talking to her cat. Hana hadn't even noticed she had one.

None of the three of them looked bothered at all that they'd been torn away from home. Well, with Yō she wouldn't have been able to tell.

"It's been nice meeting you, but I really must be going." She smiled. "I kept waiting for you to say something, but the reason I got caught up in this is that I was passing by the universe when the other three flew by. Yō, Asuka, Izayoi—Kuro Usagi—I wish you all the best, and I hope you'll find something to care about here. I'm going home now, otherwise Mom will be upset that I stayed out for too long."

The look on Kuro's face was quite amusing, and her grin grew a little wider. She wasn't above teasing people when she had the chance. Izayoi merely raised his eyebrow, though. She might have pouted.

"You—Leave?—What—"

She probably wouldn't see them again, but she did hope they would do well. None of them seemed like bad people, really.

Hana blocked out any further distractions by the simple measure of twisting space in a knot around herself, which also ensured that they wouldn't get hit by the radiation wave from her departure. Now, how did this go? Ah.

"lAnEcNaU wAwYAjEnYEc sphilar…"

Mom. She could almost feel her already.

The song went on for a little while, building an interlaced pattern of positive and negative gravity along with other, more exotic elements around her. The direction she was going was one that didn't exist on a map, because the direction itself couldn't exist until she made it.

She was just about ready to go.

Crunch.

Hana flinched, her connection to home trembling as something tried its damndest to turn her into paste. Her protective bubble nearly collapsed under the immediate impact, then trembled for long seconds as the two forces fought each other to a stand-still.

Nothing else happened. Nothing else needed to happen.

She couldn't make headway. She was stuck, and she was rapidly depleting her capacitors just from trying. Another two seconds—

One—

She felt a horrible sense of deja vu.

Zero. And even if she'd gotten through at that very moment, she no longer had the energy to make it all the way home.

The force that was trying to crush her… disappeared, the moment she gave up and stopped trying to leave. Feeling hollow, she slowly began dismantling her spell.

A/N: And this is what happens if I read too much Mondaijitachi. It's not even slightly canon, and anything in here that's not yet established can be changed. Rather, I made it up on the spot. So take this with a large pinch of salt.

Also, on second thought, you might want to be careful about motivating me.

There are things that shouldn't be.
I'm not super good on Metroid canon, having only played Super Metroid and half of Metroid Prime, but aren't basically all of the Chozo dead in canon? Or is that just because Tallon IV hasn't been consumed yet?

I was expecting to not like the new version, since I like self-inserts and I don't really know Ars Tonelico, but I've been engaged by the science mystery that both Hana and Shu-Qi and how they mirror each other as they approach a similar problem from opposite sides. And now that Samus has been introduced, we're starting to get better hints of the conflict that the original iteration waffled on and a diverse cast of characters who are all capable of contributing to the plot with their own skills and perspectives. I would love to see more.

Define 'dead'. A number of the Chozo have ascended to be energy beings, for starters. It's probably fair to say that as a society they are pretty terminally ill, just because they are slowly dropping dead of old age and not replenishing their numbers. Note how Shu-Qi is basically a hermit, and how this super-important project examining the Great Poison has like a handful of them show up. I'd be very surprised if there is more than a hundred-thousand of them still slumming it out in the material plane at this point, and I'm kind of thinking that's being highly optimistic. Probably more along the lines of tens of thousands, spread out among labs and temples and so on. Very low population density, very isolated from each other (by choice, seemingly, which is weird).

Basically, the Chozo didn't so much get wiped out as they got old and retired as a species. They didn't just randomly drop dead once they finished raising Samus. Some sought out and attained enlightenment and ascended, like the ones on Tallon IV, and the rest are slowly being picked off by old age and acts of violence.

Also, on second thought, you might want to be careful about motivating me.

Quick, we must motivate Baughn even more! Time to wildly theorize and speculate!

  • The transponder thing Shu-Qi and his merry group of scientist birds activated will accidentally attract Phazon/a Leviathan.
    • The transponder thing will be noticed by one of Hana's siblings that is also in the Metroid Universe, leading to her meeting the bird people and shenanigans1 happening.
    • In a surprising twist, Hana will be the one to meet the Chozo first, a meeting that will culminate with her pouting them into submission and them apologizing before giving her stuff back.
1 Shenanigans need not be fun or happy and might actually be quite heartwrenching.

  • Metroid Prime canon will be completely derailed within minutes of Samus landing on Tallon IV because of some apparently innocuous thing. Like that Transponder Shu-Qi activated.
    • The first game's events may happen as per Canon, but everything after it will be derailed because there are living, flesh and blood Chozo interested and messing with extradimensional technology they think is the Poison.
I just want to know what that sattelite dish Transponder thing is going to do. I mean, Einsig and Baughn spent an entire scene showing it's activation and another couple paragraphs to say it's doing something, but not even the super advanced space hippie birds know what it is doing. It's certainly going to be im...por...tant...

  • In complete defiance to normal storytelling conventions, the device Shu-Qi and his merry scientist bird crew activated will be mostly unimportant and only receive a small nod to the effect of "oh, you got that thing working, congratulations," when Hana or her siblings finds them.
Got to cover all possibilities and what not.

  • Hana's memory is returning at a slower pace because of her isolation.
And now for my personal favorite theory,
  • Hana is actually a weapon designed by Mir. Her purpose? To conquer the hearts and minds of the people of other universes with her cuteness and singing voice.
    • I mean, did you see her chasing that ant thing and then thinking she was a magical girl on chapter two? I needed an insulin shot after that.
:V

Joking theories aside, does anyone have any idea what those "Things that should not be" Baughn mentioned are? I must confess I have no idea what they might be.

Or... Samus meets Hana first

Are you trying to say Hana is actually somewhere on Tallon IV and Samus will find and rescue her? Because that'd be awesome. And it's a good way to have her leave the planet and venture out throught the galaxy without having to resort to her luckily finding a Chozo ship on a forgotten temple.

It would also lead to scenes where Samus, bounty hunter extraordinary and the woman who leaves broken planets and dead pirates in her wake, whose parental figures are hippie bird people with hiper technology, has to deal with a curious and incredibly smart eight year old girl.

I don't think it would be awesome. I actually think it might be heart wrenching since whatever Hana's made of is identified as the 'Poison' by the Chozo. Wouldn't it also mean that Hana might register as a Hazard to Samus' Sensors since her armor was made by the Chozo.

Also I'm not sure if Hana's on that planet. I'm just thinking out loud about it since its the only planet that I've read about here unless I missed it.

Ha ha, that would be an unexpectedly cute twist to things.

Well, in the previous version she was really insistent that she wasn't a teen idol, no matter how much rule lawyering it took to come to that conclusion. So based on her conviction on that, surely that can't be true! It's not like what actually happened could be true after all. ;)

Probably heart wrenching, then. But I don't think Samous would kill Hana on sight, she doesn't strike me as the kind of person to murder a little girl out of the blue just because her sensors say she's made of the Great Poison. I mean, she doesn't even glow blue and corrupt everything she touches into a crystalline mass, not to mention that Hana would likely act like the frightened, confused eight year old girl she is, which should keep Samus off balance just long enough for them to start talking.

True on that. But it would start more like a chase with a scared eight year old and Samus not knowing about it at first due to the sensors pointing a shiny big target moving infront of her. Right up to the point where a tired, trembling Hana gazing up at Samus like she's a monster then Samus will stop in horror.

While very feels inducing, I'm not sure how likely that really is given Hana can fly, generate force fields (I can't remember how to spell the proper name), and probably casually vaporize anything that gets in her way. Given all that I kinda doubt Samus would catch her.

That's why I said 'chase'. Samus is a very persistent HUNTER after all.

The sad thing is, in a case like that it's possible that Samus would shoot her down before even realising what she's looking at. Not guaranteed, by any means, but she does have long-range weaponry, and (Arpeggio manga aside), a Klein field capable of stopping lasers is also going to bend light quite a bit.

If that happens, I'll be sad.
I really like to see where it goes. This story deserves continuation.
The omake?

...nope. It was born of a few too many hours spent binging on Mondaijitachi, and there isn't really a point to it besides "Huh, this seems amusing". It's possible that I'll give you a few more scenes someday, for reasons of my own, but it's never going to be a story.

Hmm, this is basically true, given the right perspective.

No, no, she definitely was never a teen idol.

You're searching for meaning, in a clockwork universe. There can be no meaning to anything unless it's put there by intelligence, and sapient beings are the only ones who can decide that a thing should or should not be. If you remove all life, then you are still left with meaning, but a meaningless universe is horrifying to behold.

This was your regularly scheduled hint. Now back to writing Amu.

By the way, at least one of your wild guesses is correct.

By the way, at least one of your wild guesses is correct.

Wow. Ok. I'll need some time to make sense out of that hint.

As for one of my wild theories being correct... I'll need to do this point by point to organize this better.

  • The "Hana pouts the Chozo into submission and makes them return her stuff" and "the transponder thingy won't actually be Important" theories can be safely discarded by virtue of being too cracky.
    • Well, mostly discarded. It's possible they might happen, but it's possible the same way it's possible to be hit by lightning in a clear day. The circumstances for that to happen are exceedingly unlikely.

  • As you said in a previous post, my "Hana is a weapon created by Mir to steal the hearts and minds of the people of other universes" theory is, in a way, correct.
    • I'm taking this to mean that Hana was indeed created to "win the hearts and minds of people", who are most likely the Fleet of Fog (or whatever their name is in the Ar Tonelico Universe).
  • While Hana could have been created with the purpose of initiating First Contact with the people of other universes, she arrived in the Metroid Universe far too damaged and scattered for this trip to have been intentional.
    • That, plus the fact her young age would make her completely unsuited to undertake such a mission, and that Mir probably wouldn't willigly send her eight year old daughter to another universe under anything but the direst circumstances, point to Hana's arrival in the Metroid Universe being an accident.

  • Metroid Prime's plot is definitely going to be derailed. The mere fact the authors included Samus so early in the story is indicative of their plans for her. Plans that probably won't involve rehashing the plot of the entire trilogy.
    • The most likely origin for this derailment are the Chozo. Right now, there are living, breathing, physical Chozo studying phenomena that are (seemingly) linked to the Great Poison, and they'll certainly take notice of what will happen on Tallon IV.
    • The Chozo temples on Tallon IV will almost certainly detect the Phazon infecting the planet and send a warning that Shu-Qi and his merry band of scientist bird-people will notice. The fact the Great Poison is so active this time around won't escape their notice, and they'll probably contact Samus, the Chozo's champion, who has already had an encounter with Phazon and all the fun it brings.
    • Thus, Metroid Prime's plot will be derailed because this time, Samus will have direct backup from a group of Not-So-Hippie Space Birds instead of just whatever she finds on their mostly abandoned temples.

  • Finally we have the mysterious satellite dish device Shu-Qi recovered and activated. It is emitting a signal the Chozo can't reliably detect, let alone decode. Said signal is also using some strange medium that only Hana and her kin, who use those devices, and the Phazon, which is made of the same type of matter, are likely to detect.
    • Phazon lifeforms like the Leviathans and Phaaze itself are planetary scale lifeforms made of a reality warping substance that corrupts whatever it touches. If the Leviathans can make wormholes to travel across the galaxy and Phaaze can make Leviathans, they can probably notice a signal made from the same kind of extradimensional matter they're composed of.
    • Hana and her kind have an obvious method to detect and reason to answer the signal. Well, Hana's siblings can, Hana is kinda missing the parts to detect the signal right now (along with the parts that should tell her she's missing those parts in the forst place)
    • Unfortunately, we can't be sure Hana's kind are in this fic, because the only evidence we have that they also arrived in the Metroid Universe is the one that appeared in the first version of the fic.

...And somehow it still ended up feeling somewhat disorganized, bit it's late and I'm tired, so I can't really care all that much right now.
Hopefully all this can get some discussion going.

If that line of reasoning is correct, then the local Chozo and Hana might get some attention from Phaaze one way or the other, no? Assuming of course they can pinpoint the location, and assuming of course that the signal can properly propagate through a universe with seemingly some what different physics.

If that line of reasoning is correct, then the local Chozo and Hana might get some attention from Phaaze one way or the other, no? Assuming of course they can pinpoint the location, and assuming of course that the signal can properly propagate through a universe with seemingly some what different physics.

The entire line of reasoning hinges on the the device the Chozo activated having a meningful impact in the story.
If the signal it is emitting doesn't do something, then it won't have much impact beyond making the readers spend an entire scene watching it be activated.
Therefore, the Law of Conservation of Detail demands that the signal do Something, thus it most likely will propagate throught space, possibly faster than light so it can do its something in a reasonable timeframe.

And I have no doubt the Chozo would draw Phaaze's/the Phazon's attention (inasmuch as a living planet can pay attention to something smaller than an asteroid, or a semi-sentient substance can care about anything but making more of itself), but Hana drawing their interest is another matter entirely.

For one, unless she's on a planet that is scheduled to receive a visit from a Leviathan, there's little chance of her doing something to attract their attention, mostly because she hasn't shown amy signal of degrading and releasing Neutrinos like the pieces Shu-Qi found, and she is also missing her communications equipment, so she can't send any signals to be detected.

And besides that, Phaaze noticing the signal is more of a concession to the fact the Phazon is a huge Plot Device that can do some really weird shit, like converting entire planets into living organisms whose only purpose is to spread more Phazon throught the galaxy and whose method of doing that involves giant living asteroids who travel by creating wormholes. We have no evidence it can actually detect the Signal, but we don't have any guarantees it can't either.

And the Chozo scientists and Hana will inevitably get involved with the Phazon, with or without the signal, because the Chozo are studying what they think is the Great Poison so they will certainly want to investigate the newest outbreak of Phazon.
Hana, on the other hand, will get involved because she's the main character and Phazon has already been hinted pretty heavily to be one of the main plot points of one of the sides of the fic.

How about a different off the wall theory, Hana actually is part of the Great Poison. Phaaze is actually the same world as Ar Tonelico, and the Fog meddled/fiddled with Hana and due to some accident got her ending up where she is now, the wormhole jump system screwed her up or some such.

Is that crackpot enough? ;)

PS, yes, it might not entirely match up with either canon, but Phaaze was supposedly quiet for a long time, so...
