Shipwrecked on a Strange Shore

Anyone else want to have their say? I'm going to leave the vote open for a while while I go to work and stuff, and maybe try to fill in the blanks in the outline above.

Edit: Vote closed. We're going for the big tree.

1.1 Making Landfall
[X] There's a big tree slightly to the left, between the cliffs and where Lyudmila set off. There's a pretty big area below it where you might leave the gig and be sure the tide won't reach it.

***

It was nearing late afternoon when the boat finally started scraping against sand. Rossana put her oar down and unceremoniously pulled her skirt off revealing the knickerbockers underneath. "We'll have to wade a bit I think," she said to Lyudmila and started rolling up her knickerbockers.

Lyudmila nodded and stowed her oar away too. "Seems like it." They were still some twenty meters away from the shore proper. She carefully stepped out of the boat, having no need to strip down since she was still in her underwear. The water reached her mid-thigh and the sand gave way a bit when she put her feet down. She went to take hold of the prow and started to tow it to shore. After a moment, Rossana joined her.

***

Not much later they were struggling with dragging the boat up on shore. Massimo had gotten out when the boat had started to scrape again much further in and was pushing from behind, but it wasn't easy when he could only put weight on one leg. Nevertheless it helped a bit and soon the boat was out of the water altogether and on dry sand. They could only get it about three quarters past the piles of dead seaweed that marked the highest the tide could be. They'd probably have been able to get it higher still, but they couldn't get it up the foot-high step from the sand to the turf beneath the big tree. (L rolls physique -2 +1(skill) +2 (R&M helps) = 1 vs. 2, failure)

Lyudmila and Rossana were pulling half-heartedly at the prow when Massimo got their attention by rapping the side of the boat. "I think it's time for a break now," he signed. "I could certainly need one and I think I need someone's help to get to the shade over there."

Rossana and Lyudmila happy to agree and soon they were sitting in the shade leaning against the big tree. Massimo got one liquorice stick from his pocket, divided it in three equal pieces and silently shared them out.

They sat quietly for a while, each nibbling their own piece of liquorice, until Rossana broke the silence. "So... What are we going to do?"

Massimo popped the rest of his liquorice stick in his mouth and turned so both of them could see what he signed. "About the boat, you mean?"

"I meant about everything, actually," Rossana said, "but we could start with the boat."

"It's actually not that bad a place to get stranded," said Lyudmila and got up and stretched. "Imagine if we'd shipwrecked on the coast at home. We'd have frozen stiff." She skipped off the grass turf down to the sand and crunched through the dried seaweed to get to the back of the boat where she'd put her toolbox.

"What are you getting that for," asked Massimo.

Lyudmila smiled hesitantly. "Inspiration, I hope." She shrugged and heaved the toolbox's carry strap over her shoulder. "I was thinking, if I looked through what tools I have, maybe I'd have an idea on how to get it up on the turf."

"Good call," Rossana said. "Take the bucket with you while you're there, will you? We should really ration the water until we find a source, but we've been sweating in the sun so I think one sip each is in order."

"Sure." Lyudmila picked up the bucket as well and went back to the tree. She handed Massimo the bucket and sat down to rummage through her toolbox.

Massimo took a sip and handed the bucket to Rossana. "So, what should our first priority be?" He asked once his hand was free.

"Well, water, I think," Rossana looked up at the spreading branches. "Normally I'd say shelter or fire, but it's not so cold here yet" She picked up a leaf and slowly tore it to pieces. "Also, we can use the boat for shelter. If we can manage to get it up here and flip it over, that is." She paused. "Do you know, I think this is a mahogany tree? I once befriended a family of loggers on the Gamarin Isles who would have been thrilled to find one growing wild. The price for the timber would have kept them in food for a year because timber cut from wild growing trees were said to be more beautiful than plantation grown."

"Huh, yeah, mahogany is pretty expensive back home as well. It's very durable and pretty resistant to rot, I think. Not much use to us here though. Though I suppose it would be good to make a boat out of it." Lyudmila looked up from her toolbox briefly. "What are the other trees? Anything useful? Any fruit trees?"(R rolls Plant lore 2 + 2 = 4 vs. 3 Success!)

"Uuh, I think some are teak, good for building I suppose, those are definitely mulberry, they have edible fruit though not the best tasting, and I think those two over there are elder trees, mostly poisonous, but you can eat the flowers and the berries if you take out the seeds. I don't know about the rest. I don't think I've ever seen that one before, for instance." She got up and pulled down a branch from one of the nearby trees. It had white five-pointed flowers with thick waxy petals. "Hm, smells nice. Anyway, yeah, I've never seen this before. Looks like it bears fruit though." She pointed at some green lumps higher up on the branch. "Maybe we'll be lucky and it's edible"

"That's good," Lyudmila said. "Berries are a good food source. Once they're ripe anyway. We can probably get fish or more likely shellfish as well. I think I saw some blue mussels on the way in. And maybe we could get eggs from the seagulls?"

"Sure, but we probably want to focus on finding freshwater first." Rossana said. "Once we decide on what we want to do with the gig."

"And we should look for any other survivors" Massimo signed. "And," he put on a grave countenance, "though I hesitate to suggest this, maybe pick up your clothes, Love?"

Lyudmila suppressed a giggle and slapped Massimo in the arm, luckily the unbroken one. "Stop trying to get me to laugh when we're on such a depressing subject"

"What," he forced a cheeky smile to his face, "If your clothes make you sad maybe you should keep walking 'round in your underwear. I assure you, I wouldn't mind." He lost the smile. "You're right, though, of course. I just didn't want to think about what might have happened to them. I pray the children are all right." He splayed his hand to make the sign of Girl Winter across his heart.

Ideas to get the gig further up?

[] Just leave it there. It's mostly past the highest tide marks

-[] though you should tie it up just in case (this means you can no longer tie up the sheep)

[] Keep trying, you'll make it. (May tire you out)

-[] Now

-[] Rest some more first

[] Other plan: (write in?)

Are you splitting up? Yes/No

Splitting up may be dangerous, you are also more likely to succeed at rolls if you're together, but you get more actions if you split up.

What are you going to do?

(Pick up to three actions, or three for each of Lyudmila and Rossana and two for Massimo if you're splitting up. Massimo may not explore.)

[] Explore east to the seagull cliffs (Counts as two actions)

[] Explore west to the cliff-arch (Counts as two actions)

[] Explore inland (Counts as two actions, chance of getting lost)

[] Pick up Lyudmila's clothes (You may do this for free if you explore west)

[] Forage for edible fruits, berries and plants (Plant-lore roll, may cause poisoning if failed)

[] Gather firewood and tinder (Survival roll)

[] Gather blue mussels

[] Gather vines and make them into an extra rope for the sheep (or the ship) (fibre-craft roll)

[] Set up makeshift shelter/camp

[] Write in? (Subject to approval)

So yeah, I went ahead and tagged this irregular updates. 'Cause anything else seems a lie. I still don't want to abandon it, though. So you get this.

Woot! It's back!

:)

So... survival, don't worry, I got a merit badge in this... 20 years ago. Uh let's see...

1: PMA (Positive Mental Attitude)
2: Medical Care
3: Shelter
4: Signal (for help, often combined with fire)
5: Fire
6: Water
7: Food

Although, considering the environment and danger of dehydration, water is probably elevated to #4. But as Rossana said, we can turn the boat over for a makeshift shelter.

It might get cold at night, so we probably will need a fire.

[X] Get the gig up to the trees: Plan to use our brains and leverage:
-[X] Use the rope, and loop it around the tree to create a make shift pulley system (do we have any blocks/pulleys in our toolbox? We ought to, those can be quite useful). If we do have a pulley then we can use the tree and our block, to set up a block and tackle system with rove advantage. If not then we can try to setup a similar system using two trees. Even if we can only use the one tree, it should almost halve the effort needed. Massimo can hold the sheep while we use the rope for this.

[X] Split up: Yes
-Lyudmila stays near Massimo while Rossana explores.

[X] Prior to splitting up: Rossana and Lyudmila get the gig up, and flipped over to provide shelter and shade for Massimo

[X] Rossana:
-[X] Release the sheep and follow it (best hope to find water). Rossana takes the rope with her in case she needs to tie the sheep up again.

[X] Lyudmila
-[X] Pick up Lyudmila's clothes (You may do this for free if you explore west)
--[X] Gather blue mussels on your way back

[X] Massimo
-[X] Gather vines and make them into an extra rope for the sheep (or the ship) (fibre-craft roll)
-[X] Gather firewood and tinder (Survival roll)

Is that the correct number of actions?

Hmmm, I think Rossana is short an action.

She gets three. Her first is working with Lyudmila on the Gig. The second is following the sheep. What's the third?

Also, do we need extra rope if we are pulling the Gig up (not that it isn't a good thing to have)?

Exploring take 2 actions.

I figured more rope is always useful and it's something Massimo can do while sitting down.

[Votes and stuff]

Is that the correct number of actions?

Thank you, that's a very encouraging reaction.

You are missing a few actions. I'm not really counting the gig thing into your actions, though if you want to spend more time on it to make it into a makeshift shelter, that's going to take one. And yes, exploring does take two actions.

You do have a pulley, but only one and its a small one. You think you might have enough scraps along to make up a second makeshift one, maybe. After you have fire anyway.

For temperature reference, consider that the characters come from what is essentially fantasy europe in an ice age. So basically sub-arctic. Think Northern Europe or Canada or something. The coast they're currently stranded on though is more sub-tropical than anything. So more ... Florida? South China? They think it's freakishly warm and keep expecting the other shoe to drop. Except Rossana who's been spending a lot of time in similar climates on her travels.

Even in the sub-tropics it can get cold at night. Though that tends to depend on the weather.

And yes, I want to make it into a shelter, so I'm counting that as taking an action for Rosanna and Lyudmila.

A pulley will help, even if it's small.

And here's the weather report: the weather is clear and sunny. There's a slight breeze from the south-west. For Lyudmila and Massimo it feels like an overly warm summer's day.

Last call for votes. I'm going to bed now and the vote will be open until I wake up in maybe eight hours.

Edit: Elder Haman's plan it is. I have the day off so unless I get distracted I'm probably going to get some writing done.

1.2 And a Sheep shall lead them
I have the day off so unless I get distracted I'm probably going to get some writing done.
*Looks at date*
Well.
It seems I got really distracted.
Let's try to revive this, for real this time.

[X] Get the gig up to the trees: Plan to use our brains and leverage:

[X] Lyudmila
-[X] Pick up Lyudmila's clothes (You may do this for free if you explore west)
--[X] Gather blue mussels on your way back

[X] Massimo
-[X] Gather vines and make them into an extra rope for the sheep (or the ship) (fibre-craft roll)
-[X] Gather firewood and tinder (Survival roll)

"Augh!" Lyudmila said with disgust. "I'm an idiot." She slapped herself on the forehead before pulling something from her toolbox.

"What?" Massimo leaned over to look, then chuckled, which immediately turned into a wince. "Don't make me laugh, please," he signed.

Rossana looked too and raised an eyebrow when she saw the thing in Lyudmila's hand. "I cannot believe you actually have a pulley in your toolbox." She rolled her eyes. "Is it some kind of extra-dimensional space or something?"

***

With a pulley, even a small one, pulling the boat up worked much better. And even though the rope was a bit short, Lyudmila and Rossana soon had it up on the turf and flipped over. Massimo fared a bit worse with the sheep. He was definitely not cut out to be a shepherd, but at least it didn't escape.

In the end, they had a pretty decent little camp set up. The overturned gig wasn't the biggest shelter Lyudmila had ever seen, but it would fit all of them in a pinch. She was pretty sure it was stable too. If nothing else, the stones they had used to prop it up didn't budge when she kicked them experimentally.

"That'll have to do." She flopped down on the grass again and turned to face Massimo, who was leaning against the Mahogany tree. "What's next on our list of priorities?"

"Water" he signed and pursed his lips as he looked over at the bucket. "And I have absolutely no idea how to find any. I hope you have."

"Yeah, that's the question, isn't it," Rossana said. "And it's not like you can go looking, Massimo. It'll have to be me or Lyudmila." She meticulously brushed the sand off her feet and started pulling her socks on.

Massimo shrugged. "I'll have to find something else to do then."

"Well, we should follow the coastline, " Lyudmila said, "whatever we decide to do. If we go into the forest, we're just asking to get lost...." She trailed off when she saw Rossana open her mouth to speak, but continued before she actually got a word in. "And yes, Rossana, I know you can find your way pretty much anywhere, but usually, you've seen a map or talked to a local. I don't want us to risk it, okay?

"Oka- Hm," Rossana suddenly got a thoughtful expression. "Actually, I can't promise that" She grinned and got to her feet.

Massimo raised an eyebrow at her. "Really now?" He signed. "Sure you're not just trying to get out of this?"

Rossana grinned at them"I just figured out how we're going to find water" She bent over to untie the sheep. "Little Nadia here is going to save us."

"Nadia?" Lyudmila asked.

"She should have a name. Nadia is as good as any." Rossana waved her hand as if to brush the topic aside. "Anyway. I remember hearing once that the desert tribes-folk rely on their animals to find water if a water source has gone unexpectedly dry. I figure it couldn't hurt to try it out."

***

In the end, they decided that Rossana would follow the sheep to any waterhole it might lead her to and then attempt to capture it again before going back, Lyudmila should fetch her clothes and try to gather some food, while Massimo, stuck at camp while he healed, should try to make himself useful in other ways. Maybe gather some vines to make rope?

It turned out that the sheep also wanted to go in the direction of Lyudmila's clothes, so she and Rossana got to walk together for a bit.

"So, you ever captured a sheep before?" Rossana asked.

"No?" Lyudmila raised a brow. "There are no farmers in my family remember. That's your and Massimo's side of the family."

"Two generations away! Three for Massimo." She rolled her eyes. "I'm just asking, because just now, when we helped Massimo catch it? That was the first time I've ever attempted to actually make a sheep actually do something." Shrugging, Rossana continued, "I've never been required to do anything but watch before" She furrowed her brow. "Except that one time in Gebbia when I had to help butcher one, but even then most of it was done for me..." she trailed off, a hint of frustration in her voice.

"Go on?" Lyudmila looked at her questioningly.

"Well," Rossana said with a wry smile, "you've always been better at handling animals than I have. Any tips?"

"Way to ask a difficult question. I don't' really know ... make yourself big if you want it to move away from you and small if you want it to move towards you?" Lyudmila smiled back, just as wryly. "Offer it food?"

The conversation continued on that topic for a while before they reached the place Lyudmila had hung her dress to dry.

"So." Lyudmila stopped walking. "Good luck and don't take any risks, please."

Rossana rolled her eyes. "Yes, mother." She gave Lyudmila a quick hug and hurried after the sheep.

***

The dress was dry, mostly, if a bit stiff, but it would do, so Lyudmila put it on. She collected her other things, tucked her boots under her arm and started to wade back, all the while scanning the shallows for mussels and anything else that might be edible. By the time she was getting close to the camp again she had maybe five or six dozen blue mussels, a few abalones, and some limpets. She had even picked up some kelp and other seaweed that she vaguely remembered as being edible, to horses anyway. The amount of stuff you can carry in a skirt is really quite impressive.

Massimo met her at the edge of the camp looking extremely frustrated. He'd been gathering vines with the intent of making some rope, but had failed to consider that he would need two good hands to make it. The good news, though, was that he had found a plant that he thought might be a kind of wild cucumber. Also, he had gotten a respectable amount of vines collected.

It's getting late and you're hungry. What do you eat and how do you prepare it?
[] Just eat the mussels and stuff raw
[] Try to light a fire to cook them
- [] How?
[] Other? Write in.

Author's note: I'd recommend rereading from the beginning. First story-post is here. I think I've thread-marked everything and made all the updates needed to the char sheet and inventory. Please tell me if I missed anything.

By the way. New people (or old people who haven't) can still roll for extra survivors. I'm going to keep that open up until we find them really. You can only roll if you haven't yet and only if you're voting. See rules here and here.

You also get three bonus fate points and a "free" resource to make up for me abandoning this for pretty much a year.
Pick one:

[] Decent sized meadow with an abundance of flax, wild oats, poppies, chicory, clover, and other useful grasses, legumes, and flowers.
[] A good sized bee-hive in a large oak-tree on a crocus covered hill with what seems to be burrows, perhaps of rabbits.
[] A small grove of almond trees, mostly sweet, but one bitter, surrounded by a briar thicket of wild roses, raspberries, and rough bindweed.
[] A thicket of mostly willow and hazel, but also some lilacs and a rosemary bush or two at the edges. Some sorrels, nettles and thistles too.
[] Large limestone outcropping with some green gemstones in it. Perhaps suggesting a copper deposit nearby?
[] Write in: Needs QM approval.

Well, that's certainly a long absence. I'll have to go back and reread the entire quest though, cause all I remember is that we're using the Fate system, and that we just got shipwrecked on an island.

Let's get lots of muscles! Bulk up!

Oh, and I forgot to mention: all of the "bonus resource" places will probably exist in one form or another, though maybe not quite so ... concentrated. The one you pick will just be conveniently close to where you settle down.

I'm kind of surprised that you all went straight for the only one that wouldn't give you a food source. I mean yes, you have other options, like gathering mussels, but that's not going to be inexhaustible, you know.

I'd actually want to go for the Meadow option instead of the mussels, but I wasn't sure how many votes I could convert. Hopefully the next voters might help me there.

I'll switch anyway.

Can't give up yet.

EDIT: I re-read it.

Uhm, but you already have mussels? You can't choose two bonus resource site options. I was talking about choosing the limestone deposit as a bonus resource, which is pretty much the looong term gain option. The only thing it gives short term is access to limestone. Which in turn will get you quicklime as your husband is a decent chemist. But any of the other advantages that come with it will only come into effect much later.

Huh.

It's alive. Time to go reread then.

@Eri thanks for calling me back!

I'm going to leave the vote open for a while yet. To give everybody time to reread if they want to. (And also because I have to sleep and go to work and such.) I'll probably close it after I get back from work tomorrow, unless there are questions.

Glad to have you back.

Good analysis. You missed the oak tree, which can be a source of acorns (which are edible if treated right) tannins and potentially oak gall for ink, and the crocus, which could be a source of saffron if it is the right type.
