Beware uncharted lands, for there be spoilers afoot!
This may seem like it's overdue, but based on a comment I recently received elsewhere, apparently the fact that there will be spoilers to both the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and the events of various games in the Persona Series (including but not limited to Persona 3, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, and Persona 5) wasn't made clear just by how the plot has unveiled.

So I'm placing a sticky post for this message: if you have not watched the original Evangelion anime, or if you have not played the Persona games — especially P3, P4, P5, and their updated re-releases — then take note that this story contains spoilers to all of them. Read at your own risk.

/that should do it

He knew that, ultimately, this would all end in the ultimate victory of the Angels...but, in the meantime, experiencing each moment as it came gave the whole enterprise an air of excitement...

This makes me curious if Strega is aware that the Angels are basically the Usurper's slaves at the moment. Their final goal is to free themselves and accomplish their original plans, but Strega being so confident that the Angel's victory is inevitable given that the Angels have lost before and are up against very powerful forces feels like it comes from either pure arrogance or ignorance.

Given Shinji's presence, everyone's feeling more confident, not just the Usurper:

"...and what message would that be?" warily asked Shinji, managing to power through the heat of the sauna.

Takaya suddenly chuckled. "A message of hope, young one; humanity has trudged on long after its fated demise, lurching on like a corpse that has yet to realize it died...ever yearning for that sweet release."

"...and you think the Angels are the key to that?"

The pale man chuckled knowingly. "The power of the Angels...the tool of both salvation and damnation, used in complementary yet contradictory ways...I suppose for one who is free, it is difficult to understand just how constrained our current condition is."

"What do you mean by 'free'? How am I free?"

"Spoilers, Third Child...after all, thoughts can be a tricky thing, in the face of one who deigns to see everything...even if their vaunted vision will prove to be useless in the days to come." At this, Takaya could not help but laugh. "Yes...in preparation for this time, every single player is acting to their utmost...that charlatan occupying the Throne of God has played at omniscience and omnipotence for so long that they have become blind to their own shortcomings. Such is their myopic focus on your perfection that they will hesitate to use all the tools at their disposal...and in that lies the key to our freedom, the key to humanity's unmaking at long last."

Shinji was taken aback at these words. He...knows of the Usurper? (Of course he would; the Angels opposed the Usurper as well, for enslaving ADAM.) "...if you know that much...then why fight us? Why destroy and kill so many?!"

"You act as if that truly means anything."

"Of course it does!"

"...I suppose I cannot blame your ignorance, in this particular instance. The shackles you willingly placed upon yourself to even come here...it is no surprise, that your memory has been affected so. Otherwise, you would be as cavalier with the lives of humanity as I."

Memory. Memory. It kept coming back to memory, it seemed. "What...what do you know? What happened to me?"

"Ah ah ah; such knowledge comes with a cost, Third Child." The veins on chest suddenly seemed to writhe. "Submit yourself to the Angels, and you will have all the knowledge you desire."

"...no." This man, and Jin Shirato, had already spoken of their desire to destroy humanity. The people he had come to care for...well, they were a part of humanity. "I...I wish it didn't have to be this way. But I won't join you."

"A pity...but an expected response," said Takaya, who seemed honestly disappointed. "LILITH wishes to return all things to the wretched status quo...ADAM desires to bring about the end of a species that has long since surrendered itself to death...and the Usurper, opposed to both, wishes to fully claim the Throne of God for their own selfish desires. As such, we are still at cross purposes."

Time will tell if Takaya's confidence is warranted.

I forget, why isn't Mana going to school?

She went straight from living as a hobo with other orphans to being a child experiment to being a lawful child soldier. Mana's literally never gone to school; any education she received during the JET ALONE Project was geared toward what would be practical for her intended purpose (such as age-appropriate language skills, Metaverse-tactics, etc).

The amount of remedial schooling she'd need before getting clearance to attend a junior high school is, sadly, not worth the effort given her abilities and how they can be put to use in the meantime.

DragonUnitOmega analyzes SPE: 8/10
This.
Wasn't intended to be late like a lot of things.
But this was supposed to be short so I figured it wouldn't be.

But then this challenge in a game I was playing took longer than expected and I REALLY wanted to beat it.
And then life decided to make fun of me with personal stuff.
Because of course.
It's nothing serious, but try telling that to my overactive brain who was panicky and thus tired when I calmed down.

But I'm not too surprised considering how the past few weeks have been for me.

So I'mma not delay this any further. -puts on review glasses and turns on playlist- Fourty ninth installment of Dragon Reviews and (Probably) Overanalyzes SPE... STARTO!

8/10 Morning - Evening

We briefly see Sokila and Shinji before we mainly focus on Hikari...who is at her home. Watching the news. With her sister. And it's not exactly a good picture for Shinji's reputation when there are people who don't like how "lax" the control over EVA users is. Which, for us, isn't good since we know how Shinji is like, but that isn't how he's coming off right now, and that means not only trouble but also just...not feeling good about how he's coming off. I'm sure he can pick himself back up, especially as he's slowly but surely building up his support circle, but that won't make it any less painful. Speaking of stuff not coming off as a good sign (or at least a completely good one), we got Kurosawa arriving to investigate more about Shinji. Again, depending on how things go, the fact he's looking into it might be a good or bad thing.

Also...

Remind me who Kurosawa is. I am not familiar with this one.
No I didn't spoil myself. Technically.

Assuming it's the same one I know from Persona, it's Officer Kurosawa from Persona 3, the guy you buy weapons and armor from and also get rewards from for finding people in Tartarus. He also appeared in Persona 4 Arena (briefly) in Naoto's and the P3 cast's stories and in Akihiko's ending in P4 Arena Ultimax.

Again, assuming it's the same one I'm thinking as I haven't actually read the part that is making you ask about it to know for sure it' the same guy. :V

Oh hey this post. I still remember this post you know.
Man it feels weird.
But also funny that yes I got it right without looking.

Okay, back to the story!

In the form of Shinji answering Misato's questions. He feels awkward and intimidated about it not because she's a raging machine of righteous fury (and even if she was, it isn't 'cause of that), but because of not being used to having people who care about him so much. Thankfully for him, he doesn't have to quite deal with that as he finishes his tale and Misato is wringing her hair (metaphorically) on how to report back to Sae without herself getting in trouble too. RyuKing isn't much help on that while we get a "headcount" on who's where and doing what. So Misato moves on and asks for more details, specifically about Kaworu, which eventually leads to the whole "damn it it's distraction but we got no idea what to do so we'll have to put that on hold" and thus then moving on to Shinji's new power. And by that I mean they gonna be training it.

Right now though:

"So what you're saying is that if Fortune made her react like that, then..."

"Yep."

"...I'll try and see if I can minimize the collateral damage when she sees that scene..."

"Don't make promises you can't keep."

Okay I made it up to here, where it would've been spoilers before, so I think I can ask: What exactly are you referring to with "that"?
'Cause like, there have been a lot of freak outs—of the excited and suffering kind—since then. So I can't figure out which one you meant with this.

Now back to the program. Shinji wonders how he's gonna train his new power when Rei offers her insight on it before she tells them she's gonna leave. He's curious and Rei once again mentions their powers are different, something she told him when he was going to leave for this trip ("...had that really been only eleven days ago? So much had happened in the interim." same shinji same it's been almost a year since i read that part). Shinji wants her to stay, to share the load, but well...Rei turns it down, insistently, and leaves before Shinji can make any further attempts to convince her. Whatever comments about her departure are put to stop as RyuKing tells them they gotta have lunch since we got it busy. Ren, though, is like us and a bit more aware of what exactly had Rei go off. And...yup. She don't think she deserve any of the concern. She is, however, gonna go have a talk to Kaworu.

Before we move on again:

You opportunity for happiness...was lost a long time ago, she resolutely told herself.

Think that's supposed to be "your".

Now we back with Kurosawa who's now at the school after his interview with Hikari. He has a better idea on how Shinji is, but he of course he isn't done with just that, so he's been talking to teachers until, at last, Shinji's homeroom teacher, Fuyutsuki. After a bit, Kurosawa implies that some nepotism is involved with how NERV is treating Shinji. Of course, we know that is hilariously inaccurate, and luckily Fuyutsuki makes it a bit clearer on that front as he reveals about his lack of knowledge about his mother, who had disappeared without a trace, that his father hadn't visited him at all when he was under Sojiro's care, and that, despite that, when he was asking about her, he wasn't bitter or resentful about it. It's at this point Kyle interrupts and takes over, Kurosawa deciding not to resist. Kyle tells him that if he's going to keep looking, it's best he just go to NERV. Kurosawa notes how willing he is to help his students, which Kyle is cheeky about, but decides to follow with the "suggestion". But with that Kyle decides to throw a bone...and tells him, with what he knows, that whatever Gendo does is all because of one thing: spite. And with the Kyle goes and Kurosawa leaves, wondering about all that.

And...oh hey! When I thought Gigolo was Robin Hood. Speaking of what I thought before:

Mister P: ...should I tell her?

No, let's let her find out the normal way. It'll be funnier that way.

Mister P: A capital idea!

Lol. Now I all the more see why you were laughing.
Even I think it's funny.

Okay we back with the gang during a break in their rigorous training, which involves Shinji trying to do Wide Guard—uh I mean manifest his A.T. Field at a distance and on other people, doing uh...guess "muscle memory" by having their Personas fight without them being conscious of it, and, at the moment, Toji and Mana learning to fight in close quarters without their Personas with RyuKing and Misato respectively. But of course with this break is an opportunity of Kenny to talk to Shinji...this time about what his life has turned into just...hitting him and he can't help but wonder how Shinji's feeling. Shinji's conerned in turn and Kenny doesn't know if he should talk about it. Everyone else isn't affected...but Shinji, luckily, reminds that he isn't the others (and my gosh it's so tiny in the grand scheme of things but like Shinji saying that matters a lot for me because I feel like I should handle things a certain way even though the way I want is so different and I probably would've ignored it for so long if I wasn't just told "You are you, and everyone handles things differently" and...my point is it's so small but means so much to me) and Kenny acknowledges that, but (like me) he thinks he should be tougher if he really wants to keep doing this. We briefly digress with...yay! Kenny and Shinji on given name basis! Then we get back on the previous topic...with Kenny wondering if his father had a point. He knew it was hard but it didn't really hit him how much and there's no way he can change that. He's worried if he's getting cold feet. But just as the others have done for him, Shinji reminds him he's made it this far and that if he falls, he's got others to help him back up.

And with that, they're closer, and go back to training.

What? A smiling figure?

What you talking about? :V

Anyways, we now switch to...Akane snapping a dazed Mayumi out of it and asking if she's annoyed at being left behind. Mayumi just goes "uh, no...why?" and Akane can't help but feel she's off. Though after a bit more talking, with Mayumi saying she'd normally just get her mind off of stuff like with happened at the Olympics by reading, Akane thinks that she isn't as bothered, or at least in the same way, because of her dad. Which leads to a bit of story time, but we're told through Ren and Sojiro talking. Short version: the last survivor of a family killed by her spouse -turned-Acolyte murdered three of her childhood friends and Zenkichi caught her after couple of dead ends, but she killed herself before she could be apprehended and with it finding out the motive and promotion he turned down. Of course Ren isn't too happy about the police not handling it after the first death, but that isn't really important, as that's an old wound he ain't bringing up, just like this old case. We then jump back to Akane finished telling the same story to Mayumi. After a bit of talking about Akane's pride for her father, Mayumi admits that...she can't help but more think about why the woman did what she did. And honestly the same. It takes a lot for me to legit hate someone or something, so I more go "why do you act this way?"/"why does it go like that?", especially since, sometimes, the crime could've been prevented if the circumstances to cause the motive were different. And then Mayumi asks "anyone can be driven to do those sorts of things?" Akane is like "yeah, anyone can do anything, but...who wants to think it in negative way like that?" Mayumi wonders herself, and maybe if that's just the way she is, something coiling and coiling within her.

Anyways, intermission!

Well, the kuchisake-onna literally means 'slit-mouthed woman'...and there has been a 'smiling figure' observing our fellows within the Metaverse as of late...and now we see that Zenkichi Hasegawa has a personal connection with a serial killer remembered in Nishiawakura as the Kuchisake-onna Killer...

...nah, I'm sure there's nothing there. :V

Well ghosts were already guessed soooo...

Mayumi's Persona then? Because that's her Shadow? And she wants to be normal (which is Mayumi's "beautiful" to a kuchisake-onna's beautiful) but unconsciously knows she isn't (with her having an Angel as a part of her and being "not normal" to a kuchisake-onna's status as a yokai/onryou and "not beautiful")?

Eh, I'm probably stretching things.

Speaking of Mayumi though, we're back with Kurosawa, annoyed about speaking to NERV staff being delegated to tomorrow and the other leads being fruitless, following the one that wasn't and arriving at Mayumi's house where her parents are. And they...are fine with answering questions, replying easily. But with each question about Mayumi, they just direct it back to her being a good girl. When the subject suddenly changes, there isn't even a pause of confusion at the swerve as they answer it as easily as breathing air. And just as easily...they are unfazed at a terrible, and false, accusation to their daughter, insisting she's "a good girl". Having enough, Kurosawa leaves.

While we see that "good girl" lamenting her fate as Armisael tells her, essentially, it's time.

And with that, the day ends.

Oh boy. I can't help but think that maybe the kuchisake-onna could be her Persona, but like, it also feels like it's too monster mob" like to be one? Not to mention the fact that I don't even know if she's gonna get a Persona at the end of this Armisael business ("or that she'll even survive..." a part of me conspiringly whispers...NO. I REFUSE TO THINK ABOUT THAT. LALALALALALALALALA). So I'mma just leave that there and not expect anything. Well anything besides, you know, THE TROUBLE FROM DEALING WITH THIS. But for now...

Ritsuko Akagi absentmindedly critiqued Kensuke Aida's analysis of the most recent debugging of the Tokyo-3 MAGI, even as the greater part of her mind focused on something which had been lingering as an...old point of contention.

(July the 30th: As she spoke to Shinji Ikari about PILATE's data logs — kept beyond her reach by some unknown whim of the MAGI; perhaps a bit of subconscious spite baked into the computers' biological components — she couldn't keep her lingering bitterness from leaking out. But given that the Third Child was about to go on a bloody summer vacation, she didn't find it in herself to care too much.)

Even now, the MAGI are keeping me from finding out what PILATE's been talking with Ikari about. In spite of recent opportunities she'd had to manually inspect his phone, there was some kind of dynamic algorithm that immediately locked down his chat logs the moment she had it in her hands. Remotely viewing files on his phone had also been rendered an impossibility, which was something she was utterly mystified by. What's so important about your discussions with Ikari?

(Why didn't the MAGI exhibit similar initiative with regards to her?)

(Why would you be surprised? You know that you never impressed her...not as a daughter, not as a scientist, nor as a woman...)

Ritsuko quietly took a drag from her cigarette, crunching the stub into her ashtray.

In Kyoto, Masayoshi Shido — President for the time being, pending the final authorization and approval of Japan's new constitution establishing it as a confederacy of prefectures — was enjoying a brief moment between meetings to look at his personal calendar. The 14th of September: the day after the upcoming new moon. On that day, his son's tenure as Warden of Tokyo-3's Cognitive Protection Center would come to an end.

(His son had been dutiful, polite, and well-behaved: a talented scion, born to greatness. Then, on June 5th of 2008, Shimaru Shido had inexplicably run away. That boy's gifts had been enough to somehow evade detection; imagine his shock, years later, to discover that his son had become an A.T. Agent under the identity of Goro Akechi.)

From what I've heard, his capability is exceptional...what trials did he endure to become so powerful? Or is it a matter of his natural talent manifesting itself? Either way, he would do whatever it took to ensure that the boy was within reach...so that he could get some answers as to his petulant disobedience. After all, the position for Kansai's Superintendent is now vacant...and I have the funniest feeling that he would be more than capable.

(No matter what, he would get to the truth as to why his son had run away.)

(Then, things will finally be in their proper order...)

At NERV's First Branch in the ruins of Old Boston, both of the Marukis were pulling an all-nighter...no thanks to Director Ikutsuki from the Second Branch. "So...are we going to be reimbursed for all the extra coffee we've had to make, just to analyze your Prometheans' data?" asked Takuto Maruki.

Shuji Ikutsuki's image on the monitor shrugged. "It cannot be helped if there is a lot of 'product' to sell."

Takuto smiled warily. "I'm...not exactly comfortable referring to the Prometheans as 'products'..."

"It is the reality of how the world views them. More importantly, other nations are willing to pay in order to supplement the Anti-Terror Task Force and their own cognitive forces...especially since Strega has proven to be surprisingly troublesome."

On another monitor, the severe face of Mitsuru Kirijo — looking far perkier than either of the others, given that it was morning in Germany — accompanied an equally stern voice. "Whoever those poor souls are, any assistance they can provide in fighting back against the monsters of the world will be reward enough for the people they used to be."

Honestly, Futaba is convinced the Prometheans don't HAVE souls, thought Maruki, his eyes tiredly shifting towards his wife; she was still hunched over in front of her station, typing away at her keyboard and analyzing all of the data coming from the Prometheans which had been deployed on America's East Coast. Even if they're manifesting A.T. Fields to an extent...something seems off. "I suppose I'm just tired..."

"I've already given word that the Third Branch will have an analytics package available for our clients by this afternoon," said Director Kirijo. "Do you have an ETA?"

Futaba garbled something incoherent. Takuto expertly translated that as, "We'll be done by sunrise."

Mitsuru nodded, whilst Ikutsuki grinned wanly. "Here's to the widescale adoption of Project Prometheus...and, hopefully, a lighter burden for our dogged Evangelion-users." With those words, Ikutsuki logged off.

As Kirijo logged off as well, Takuto finally yawned. "I hope this'll be the last all-nighter in a while..."

xx

Futaba Maruki had idly half-listened to Taco-kun talking shop with his fellow Directors; her eyes (and the majority of her mind) were focused on something about the Prometheans' data that was bugging her.

After excluding the variables and outlying parameters, she had finally discovered a commonality...one that was the exact opposite of whatever she had observed with Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley-Sohryu. Those two have that weird little wavelength...and your average Joe has cognitive and metaphysical readings, but without that weird little signal that the Second and Third Children share...but these Prometheans...?

Their mental and spiritual data, for lack of a better word, lacked depth; like they were merely pretending at being people. Sure, they may be suffering from psycho-spiritual maladies...but something just seems wrong with them in a way I can't quite put my finger on...

(At least Ikutsuki had done his due diligence with this whole project. That was enough to assuage her, for the time being...)

These are the people who have had Angel bits grafted onto them, which only works because their minds and souls are anomalous.

The reason why they're anomalous is because it's heavily implied that these are the people who have been sacrificed and unmade by the Usurper to have the energy needed for resets. We (as in the readers) only know this because one of the people he sacrificed in Minako's Sidestory (Marie Vincennes) showed up as a Promethean when Mari and Asuka went to NERV-02.

Is there any correlation between that and Mayumi's parents also being puppets?

Is there any correlation between that and Mayumi's parents also being puppets?

Separate circumstances.

Armisael had bound itself to Mayumi's soul at some point long ago, going back to before the War in Heaven. That had no impact on the souls of her parents. However, depending on the timeline, the Angel was not above harming her parents to the point they were effective patsies (like in this timeline, where they had been 'ground down' to the point they were practical automatons masquerading as people: an effective cover to keep Mayumi isolated). In short, what happened to Mayumi's parents is restricted to this timeline only; they still exist, and so they'll reappear in the next timeline.

Those sacrificed by the Usurper, however, no longer exist except in mankind's collective memory...which can fade away in time.

I agree that Shido will be in for a rude awakening if he thinks everything will go as he planned. I have a sinking feeling that the prometheans can be hacked/hijacked.

I do like that Shido's playing hardball with the UN about the Evangelions. They were planning on turning Japan into a sacrificial lamb for the angels, of course he'd tell them to pound sand after that.

I didn't set out to make Masayoshi Shido a likeable(ish) character, but that would be one of the weirdest accomplishments(?) of the story if I somehow manage to pull that off.

Gendo: He'll come across as palatable by comparison simply because I exist.

Fair enough.

At Kanamin Kitchen's Tokyo-3 location, a rather large party of educational professionals celebrated their last night of relative 'freedom'; tomorrow, classes would resume.

Keel Lorenz listened, for the most part; it was an exercise of charity (though some would say largesse) on his account, to pay for the entire party, consisting of the faculty for both the High School and Junior High School branches for Hakone Academy. Even so, he put in his two cents as appropriate. "We seem to have a surprising number of last-minute transfers," he remarked, sipping from a glass of red wine.

"Please don't remind me," grumbled Sadayo Kawakami.

Sumire Yoshizawa gently rubbed the shoulders of her fellow teacher. "There there, Kawakami-sensei..."

Kasumi Yoshizawa finished chewing a rather large chunk of roast lamb before adding, "A challenge is simply that: a challenge. We'll make sure those newcomers are brought up to speed immediately!"

"Your workload is kind of ludicrous," murmured Ichiko Ohya, the 'newbie' amongst the High School faculty. "If it weren't for the higher-than-average pay, I'd be tempted to just hitch a ride out of this city..."

"Excellence is its own reward, but I also believe in paying well for it," observed the Principal of Hakone Academy. "There is no expense too great to ensure a brighter future."

"I'll drink to that," agreed Kawakami.

Keel Lorenz made his rounds, eventually hovering closer towards a table containing a number of teachers for the Junior High branch's second year. "I trust you're all enjoying yourselves," he stated without asking.

Maya Ibuki, Makoto Hyuga, and Shigeru Aoba each raised their own glasses of beer. Kōzō Fuyutsuki slightly raised a small cup of warm saké. "Enjoying your generosity, kōchō-sensei"

"You'd best. You and the others in your year have the unique privilege of teaching all three Evangelion-users."

Aoba all but slumped in his chair. "Don't remind us..."

"It'll be fine. Definitely fine. No need to panic," muttered Ibuki, the mousey woman repeating the words like a mantra.

Hyuga robotically ate from his gourmet rice, opting for the better path known as 'silence'.

Fuyutsuki couldn't help but chuckle. "At least Ayanami-kun and Ikari-kun aren't troublemakers...I can't speak for the third one, however. Sohryu-kun, was it?"

"The Second Child is a bit of a spitfire, and definitely more in line with gaijin stereotypes," remarked the Principal, even as he quietly enjoyed the music of the live band. "But I'm sure everything will go swimmingly, so long as we do our best."

For once, Gendo Ikari was not in his office, languishing in the dark.

Rather, he stood upon the rooftop of NERV Headquarters. With the waning crescent moon yet to rise above the horizon for a few more hours yet, the sky seemed somewhat oppressive; though empty of clouds, the ambient light pollution of the city choked out the starlight, leaving only the perception of darkness.

How fitting, in the grand scheme of things.

"So many people act according to their own whims, their own plans, their own desires," he mused, hands stuffed into his pockets. Despite the blowing wind, he seemed paradoxically untouched by it. "Yet, once they get what they want...rare is the man who is finally satisfied." After having experienced so much, he doubted such an individual existed; the world they lived in had no patience, nor any desire, for saints. "Such is our lot." His eyes, hidden by orange shades, quietly gazed into the abyss above; even now, he wondered if she could see him. "I wonder...if you're the exception...I wonder if you're satisfied...Yui."

He remained there for some time, content with the loneliness of his position.

(It was a balm for the rancid spite that otherwise motivated him.)

Sister Mary Makinami sensed Asuka's approach before she knocked on the door. With a knowing smile, she opened the door to her private residence. "Shouldn't you be turning in at your dorm, Miss Sohryu?"

Asuka gave a tired roll of the eyes. "Ha ha."

"Have you already eaten?"

Asuka shook her head. "I've been in Hokkaido for most of the day. Last had a snack several hours ago."

Sister Mary shook her head at her habitual stubbornness. "Honestly, you're going to be the death of yourself one of these days, if not me!"

The Second Child snorted, pulling up a chair at the small kitchen table. "Like you wouldn't jump for joy to finally be rid of me," she snarked, opting for gallows humor as a way to get under her skin.

Mari didn't take the bait. "Looking forward to death is fine and dandy if you think you're in a good spot...but most people want as much time as possible to make the most of their lives." With a knowing expression, she said, "Do you think you're gifted enough to be one of those lucky few, who are satisfied that they've done all they could?"

Asuka, wisely, also didn't take the bait.

A simple but filling meal of eggs with stir-fried noodles was accompanied by brief chatter. "I actually had a visit from Shinji Ikari today." When Asuka looked at her with bewildered eyes, Mari laughed. "Ghost attack. He was quite impressed by one of my longer prayers."

"I'm sure," she groused. "What, was he that useless that you had to hold his hand?"

"You've fought alongside him once before," she lightly chided. "You know better...which means you're being envious again. Or perhaps it's jealousy...?"

Asuka rolled her eyes. "Whatever. I'm going to take a shower. You still have spares of my things?"

"I always do," acknowledged the nun. Mari shook her head as the younger teenager headed to the bathroom. "So prickly~" The religious quietly cleaned the dishes, performed some brief stretches and prayers, and switched into her loose yet modest nightgown. Right as she finished preparing a futon on the floor, Asuka emerged from the bathroom in her pajamas. "You can take the bed, Miss Sohryu-"

"Nope." Asuka promptly rolled the blanket over, rolling into the futon. "'Night."

"...well, if you're going to be that stubborn about it," murmured Sister Mary as she accepted Asuka's act of generosity, hopping into her bed. "Sleep well."

(It would be no surprise to her, that, later that evening, Asuka would end up slipping into the bed.)

(Mari would make no mention of it; simply embracing the younger girl from behind, she would rest her chin in Asuka's hair.)

("You don't have to act tough all the time," she would whisper, as an elder sister would to her younger sibling. Asuka wouldn't answer, committed as she was to her own particular pride.)

(Come the next day, Asuka would say nothing about it, and Mari wouldn't poke fun at her. Some things didn't need to be said out loud.)

"But as far as others go, a lot of viewers have come to appreciate the rugged looks of Munehisa Iwai-"

"This part of the news is always boring," said a childish voice.

Hikari Horaki couldn't help but agree. However, the pragmatic part of her replied, "Well Nozomi-chan, it can be helpful at times to think about how others are perceived."

"I guess," muttered the younger girl.

"Did you finish washing up?"

"Yes."

"Did you brush your teeth-?"

"Yes," grumbled the child, pouting and crossing her arms. "M'not little, sis."

"I know. But school starts back tomorrow, so you need to get back in the groove of things." Looking over towards the easy chair, Hikari asked, "Otousan..."

Bunzaemon Hikari slightly waved his hand. keeping his eyes on the newscast. "You have school as well...I'll be turning in before long."

(School. A place where she could actually accomplish something tangible.)

"...okay." Hikari quietly tiptoed over, squeezing his shoulder and giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Sleep well, father."

"I will," he promised.

(Hikari would wake up later that evening to see that her father had fallen asleep in the chair, the television still running mindlessly.)

(Out of habit, she placed a small pillow behind his head, covered him in a blanket, and kicked in the recliner so he could at least lean back.)

(If only you could do more...)

I didn't set out to make Masayoshi Shido a likeable(ish) character, but that would be one of the weirdest accomplishments(?) of the story if I somehow manage to pull that off.

Gendo: He'll come across as palatable by comparison simply because I exist.

Fair enough.
I wouldn't go so far as to say 'likeable', but even someone like Shido can do something agreeable from time to time.

I mean, it's not like you're specifically on a time limit for these reviews. (There's also nothing stopping you from just binge reading the rest of SPE and then getting to these reviews on your own time, if you so desire.)

Oh hey this post. I still remember this post you know.
Man it feels weird.
But also funny that yes I got it right without looking.

It's almost like time travelling, but without the benefits of actually going back in time. :V

Okay I made it up to here, where it would've been spoilers before, so I think I can ask: What exactly are you referring to with "that"?
'Cause like, there have been a lot of freak outs—of the excited and suffering kind—since then. So I can't figure out which one you meant with this.

It's been so long that I've forgotten. Maybe I was referring to the fact that the P3/P4/P5 protags were going to be showing up soon?

("...had that really been only eleven days ago? So much had happened in the interim." same shinji same it's been almost a year since i read that part)

Imagine how people have felt waiting for Shinji and Asuka to meet up again. :p

Think that's supposed to be "your".

*fixy fix*

This is actually something I'm curious about: even though Shinji has undoubtedly been changed (and has grown) because of the various facets that come with being a Persona protagonist, does he still feel like Shinji Ikari? It's a fine line to walk (especially given prior frustrations expressed by certain readers regarding how with Shinji, it sometimes seems as if his journey is two steps forward, one step back, three steps forward, then four steps back, and oh wait we're back where we started, time to keep moving forward...), so I'm curious if I'm managing it.

And then Mayumi asks "anyone can be driven to do those sorts of things?" Akane is like "yeah, anyone can do anything, but...who wants to think it in negative way like that?"

You'd be surprised. Despair mixed with human depravity makes for a wretched cocktail.

My reaction right now

/ :V

I refer you to the prior spoilered pictures. :p

9/6 - Late Evening to Night
Within the Vulcanus Dorms, a trio of Wild Cards prepared for their return to the daily school life.

"It all sort of loses its pizazz once you go through it often enough," murmured Minato.

"Speak for yourself," huffed Ren. "At least you don't have four Confidants in the faculty."

"...of the four, which ones would you rather date?" honestly asked Yu.

Ren flatly stared at his 'senpai'. Even if he knew such outlandish oddball questions were — to some degree — one of Narukami's coping mechanisms, he couldn't help but rise to the bait. "I'm not having a discussion about the dateability of my teachers."

Yu shrugged. "You'd be surprised at how normal that sort of question is for high schoolers."

"Normal or not, the answer is no."

"...we need more productive ways to reduce stress," grumbled Minato. "Dating and romance kind of lost its appeal," he said.

Neither Narukami nor Amamiya called him out on such a blatant lie. "Then maybe we should've picked a sports club of some kind," said Yu with a hum.

"It would feel too much like we're beating up small children," griped Ren. "And that's notwithstanding the fact that we haven't put any points into being athletic," he added, implicitly offering tribute to Futaba Sakura the Gamer Girl Extraordinaire.

Minato slowly looked in his direction. "What about that little 'mask' trick you told us about?" he asked, referring to Ren's brief summer escapades as Joker.

"We don't actually have proper ways to get into the Metaverse...and besides, it'd be too risky, wouldn't it?"

As one, the trio sighed.

(It was their way of getting back into the proper mindset: griping and moaning and complaining about the whole affair as though it were a job.)

(By tomorrow, they would once more be acting and living the role of second-year high school students: intelligent, aloof, cool, and impossibly charming...)

Finally...the Izanagi Dorms.

"Tomorrow...we return to school," observed Kaworu Nagisa from atop his bunk.

Shinji Ikari, staring at the underside, sleepily replied, "Yeah..." His hands were absentmindedly fiddling with his old SDAT.

"A more wretched hive of scum and villainy the likes of which we've never seen," mused Kensuke Aida from atop his bunk.

Toji Suzuhara blinked, his face contorting to a mulish frown. "That sounds like a quote."

"...maybe," was Aida's sheepish reply.

"I mean, school's irritating, but it's not that bad. I kind of missed the normal grind of it all...I wonder if my track time will have improved...?"

Kensuke stared over the edge of his bunk. "After everything we've gone through the past month, that's what you're focusing on?!"

"Screw you, Ken! Don't pick on normies for being normal!"

"First of all, don't ever use the word 'normie': you sound lame. Second, normalcy is overrated. Third..."

Shinji quietly tuned out their bickering, knowing that it would last for a while. With a quiet sigh, he stuck the earbuds in, and pressed 'play' on the tape of velvet blue...

...and when he opened his eyes, he was sitting in a metal folding chair, staring at Sokila. No one else was in the auditorium, not even Igor. "Sokila-chan...?" This sound...Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique? Why was the song different?

"I need to show you something," said the little girl. "It's something...well, I guess it's somethin' important? That's what Mister Igor and my fellow 'Tendants were sayin'..."

"...okay," he said, uncertain about what was happening. When she extended her hand, he took it in his own; the little girl quietly led him onto the auditorium stage, taking him beyond the curtains and into the backstage.

The overall scenery shifted and changed seamlessly, yet evoked no distinction of strangeness; he was simply traversing the backstage of an auditorium, traversing the halls that connected to changing rooms and costume departments. Yet each door they entered took them further to the edge of the quaint 'unreality' that the Velvet Room occupied; before long, they were before another door. "...does this lead outside of the Velvet Room...?"

Sokila shook her head. "Nope. Just to the edge of it...kinda? The others used a lot of big words about it..." Looking up with soulful yellow eyes, she added, "You're the one who has to open it."

"...if you say so," he said, trusting her. He quietly turned the brass knob, stepping beyond the threshold. To his shock, he now stood upon a floor of blue tiles and cobalt fencing, floating amidst a starry sky; impossibly, he could see perfectly fine, as though his person was cast in twilight. Beethoven's sonata was swiftly muffled, and he felt distinctly...lesser, somehow; less real, than before.

"It's like being in a dream, isn't it?"

Shinji balked at the sudden voice, marvelling at its familiarity; it came from a figure standing ahead of him, in the center of the arena. "Wait...Akechi-san?!"

The older teenager calmly turned around, clad in his A.T. Agent uniform, shackled as ever. "You sound surprised," he observed.

"I mean, but...why? How?!" he exclaimed, gesturing around them wildly. "How are you in the Velvet Room?!"

"Technically, though we lie between mind and matter, we have fallen further from reality and into the realm of dreams," Akechi corrected, taking his measure. "I suppose Joker is capable of operational security, at the very least..."

"What are you-?"

"The man you know as Ren Amamiya is a Wild Card. Just like Narukami and Arisato," he said without preamble. "In the grand order of things, my role was to be one as well, albeit a player on the opposite side of the board...even though we were both part of a game we had no choice in. A game that was itself but a failed attempt at ending a wretched stalemate." Akechi quietly began to pace, circling Shinji Ikari as he did so; somehow, Shinji had ended up in the center of the bizarre arena. "Yet the key to ending that stalemate was never my role, nor Joker's...it is yours. And if you are to be that key, no chances can be taken..."

Shinji's mind was reeling with disbelief — had Amamiya-senpai known all this time? Had Akechi known he was a Wild Card from the very beginning? What was going on?! — even as his eyes darted around; the other Attendants occupied the four corners of the arena. Sokila was now sitting atop the doorframe leading out of this arena, kicking her feet back and forth. "What's...?!"

"It is quite simple, Shinji Ikari: by the end of their respective journeys, Arisato, Narukami, and Kurusu — Joker — wielded power akin to gods. You will need to be at least on their level..." Without warning, he shattered his manacles; in a flash of blue fire and crimson light, his outfit was overshadowed by that of a dark hero's: a twisted reflection of a valiant Featherman, complete with a sharp and wicked helm of black, with red lenses over his eyes. "Behold: the great villain once known as the Black Mask." With a flick of the wrist, his left hand now held a sawtooth blade, jagged and foul, colored like fresh blood. "I will have your measure, Ikari! If you hold back, you might as well die and let someone more worthy take your place!" With a harsh cackle, a black-and-white humanoid with wicked horns and hoofed feet manifested, perched upon a crimson sword. "Behold: Loki!"

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItxWMuW3jQg

Shinji boggled.
That's not Robin Hood...he has multiple Personas too...?!

His Other calmly held up an old skull.

"And this is a concern?"

The Beast smiled, teeth spattered with blood.

"He believes himself to be a villain...how precious."

As one, they spoke.

"Go forth, and fight."

...there's a purpose to this, thought Shinji, determinedly calming himself down. Sokila-chan wouldn't bring me here to die...and if Akechi-san is speaking like this...he must be intent on training me in his own way. Why couldn't he just phrase it that way, then? "...all right." Moving as if in a dream, his Metaverse outfit manifested, spade and all. Behind him, Hamlet flashed into being. "I'm ready."

With defiant — and impossibly gleeful — roars, Akechi and his Persona charged.
