Beware uncharted lands, for there be spoilers afoot!
This may seem like it's overdue, but based on a comment I recently received elsewhere, apparently the fact that there will be spoilers to both the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and the events of various games in the Persona Series (including but not limited to Persona 3, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, and Persona 5) wasn't made clear just by how the plot has unveiled.

So I'm placing a sticky post for this message: if you have not watched the original Evangelion anime, or if you have not played the Persona games — especially P3, P4, P5, and their updated re-releases — then take note that this story contains spoilers to all of them. Read at your own risk.

Just what is Kaworu planning for her?

I think the conversation between Asuka and Akihiko is the main reason. Asuka is good and she does train to get better, but it sounds like she has developed some bad habits with her training and techniques. She is getting sloppy and relying too much on her evangelion's special abilities rather than proper skill.

Being in a club that is not related to fighting against acolytes or angels is also probably good for her mental health instead of her current mindset that anything not related to her work as an evangelion user is irrelevant and pointless.

There is no way Asuka would join of her own initiative though so Kaworu keeps provoking her to make sure she sticks with the boxing club solely to sock him in the face.

9/17 - After School to Evening
(As Asuka was getting introduced to the joys of the Boxing Club, the Literature Club was wrapping up...)

xxxx

Shinji Ikari had actually declined to continue reading The Tragedy of Hamlet that afternoon; mostly because the other club members were going through their book reports: a process which had begun earlier that week.

It was honestly quite interesting, listening to their presentations. However, the absence of one club member from class 1-B had prompted a bout of subtle melancholy from Yamagishi. (Curious, that he could differentiate between melancholic moods by now...)

His Other rolled his eyes.

"Is it so surprising, that you are able to sift through other's gloom?"

He put on some glasses for emphasis.

"Or is it because you are surprised to be so familiar with another...?"

As people began to depart, Shinji quietly made his way towards Mayumi. "Yamagishi-san, are you okay?"

"Ah. I'm fine." Looking over towards the other club members, she remarked, "I guess I didn't expect Mizuno-san to be gone..."

"Gone?"

"...ah, you weren't here on Tuesday."

"What happened on Tuesday? Did something happen when Kensuke visited?"

Mayumi, oddly flustered, quickly blubbered, "I-It has nothing to do with Aida-san!" Briefly composing herself, she said, "It has to do with another club member; Mizuno-san said that she would be transferring schools, and so Tuesday would be her last day." Looking down at the small book in her hands, she added, "I think someone in her family passed away during the last new moon...and family obligations require them to move away to handle their affairs..."

"...ah." That sounded rather difficult. (Like you're in any position to make commentary about someone's family affairs.) Taking a seat in one of the beanbag chairs, he asked, "Were you two close?"

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRpJaY4z1MU

Mayumi, to his surprise, shook her head. "Well...until you joined the Literature Club, I rarely interacted with any of the members outside of it. You were the first one I spoke to outside of this club with any regularity...and then with the summer vacation, I made so many more friends, and...well, you were there. You know what happened." Composing herself, she added, "Mizuno-san and I weren't that close."

"...so then why do you seem upset?"

"I guess it has more to do with her situation..." Smoothing out her skirt in an attempt to occupy herself, Mayumi said, "Two days ago...Katsuragi-san informed me that I have a cousin on my father's side. I still have blood relatives."

"...oh." That was actually a pretty big deal. "Do you know who it is?"

Mayumi shook her head. "Only that she's my father's niece, and that she lives in Osaka. Other than that...I don't know." Sighing, she murmured, "I don't want to think about it, but I also can't help but think about it..."

"Why?"

"Hm?"

"Why don't you want to think about it?"

"...because then it makes me think of my parents." With a tilt of her head, her long hair fell like a curtain over her face. "I'd accepted their circumstances. I had tried to make peace with that." Because their very existence had been corrupted by the Angel Armisael, she left unsaid. "But this? This tells me that before I entered the picture...they were actual people, with a tangible connection to others. And to think about that potential...and wonder how things could have been...it starts to hurt." For emphasis, she balled a fist against her chest. "And I wish it didn't..."

On some level, Shinji understood the desire to turn away from something painful. Yet on another level, given his own strange relationship with his father, and the mystery involving his mother...the prospect of finding out he had additional family would have been too appetizing to ignore. "...I don't think it's something you can run away from, though," he offered by way of encouragement. "Because this cousin of yours...does she know anything about your father?"

"...I don't know. Katsuragi-san made it seem like she did, if I recall..."

"Then she may have memories of who your father used to be. And I don't think that's a small thing." He recalled his various conversations with Fuyutsuki-sensei and Futaba Maruki: they had all hinted at a time where his mother had been vibrantly alive, and his father had not been so distant. "Would it really be so bad, to have an idea of who your father used to be? As something other than what Armisael made them...?"

Mayumi placed her hands in her lap, saying nothing; however, from what he could see from her face, she was merely contemplating. "...objectively speaking, it wouldn't be. Subjectively speaking, I feel like it would only result in more emotional pain...but that's not fair to whoever my cousin is. And it's probably not fair to my parents, either..." Sighing, she looked up, brushing her hair out of her face. "I know what the proper thing to do is...but actually doing it is the hard part."

Obligations. Duties. A heavy burden that all had to carry, to some degree or another. "...it won't disappear just because you look away," he remarked. (Oh, how true that was; every obstacle and every stumbling block before him would remain, even if he ran away...and so what would the point be?)

"I know," she admitted with a nod. "I know..." Forcing a small smile onto her face, Mayumi added, "Thank you for talking with me, Ikari-san. I have a lot to think about..."

Shinji nodded, inwardly feeling like he understood her even more...

As the evening rolled on, Shinji found himself back at the Izanagi Dorms.

"Welcome back," said Kaworu, who was casually squeezing a stress ball. "So it turns out Asuka-chan joined the Boxing Club."

Toji — in the middle of studying at his desk — and Kensuke — reading from his Sinbad book atop his bunk — both looked with alarm in his direction. "Wait, how long have you known this?!" exclaimed Toji. "Ken and I have been here for, like, an hour!"

"Waiting until Shinji-kun arrives means I only have to say it once~"

Kensuke sighed dramatically. "Great, like Sohryu-san needs to be any scarier."

Shinji titled his head. "Why would that be?"

Kensuke flatly replied, "Imagine her with Nagisa-kun's boxing ability."

Shinji thought about it, and it was his great fortune that a mission came up so that he wouldn't have to think about it for the rest of the evening.

xxxx

Over at the Izanami Dorms, Rei Ayanami — after informing Shinji that the night missions were up to him to handle — entered her room.

"Welcome back," chorused Hikari and Mayumi, who were both studying at her desk.

Asuka merely grunted, as she was shadow-boxing in a corner of the room.

Rei, staring flatly at Asuka's movements, quietly turned towards Hikari.

"Ah...she apparently joined the Boxing Club this afternoon," explained Hikari. "Not that I'm unhappy Sohryu-san's joining one of the extracurricular sports clubs, but it's certainly not one I expected..."

"To be fair, it's one with more applicability to our work in the Metaverse than most others," offered Mayumi.

Asuka, still in the midst of throwing out combinations, remarked, "I only joined so I can punch Kaworu Nagisa in the face. It's just a matter of time until the club captain allows me to spar with the jackass."

At this, Hikari and Mayumi couldn't even fault her, aware as they were of Nagisa's infamous reputation.

Rei, letting none of her true feelings show, simply nodded. "I see. I will be taking a shower." As she entered the bathroom to refresh, her mind quietly churned. Kaworu Nagisa...

(September the 8th, 2015: As Kaworu stepped away from their table at KiKi Ichibanya, Rei quietly confronted him one-on-one as to what his plans entailed. "Planning? Planning is how things go wrong." With an ominous chuckle, he added, "Ayanami-san...the Second Child has no need to fear me. What purpose would there be in unduly harming her? If anything, she's in more danger from whoever will rise to face her during the New Moon. This whole little escapade of ours will be a mere sideshow.")

...I only hope this 'sideshow' is only that, she pondered, even as cold water streamed onto her head.

Such thoughts continued to trouble her, even as the night wound down...

Even Hikari is understanding about Asuka wanting to punch Kaworu. Also if Asuka were to become an expert boxer, she most likely will become one that can K.O. her opponents with one punch.

The thought just occurred to me, how long has Shinji been reading Hamlet? It's felt like forever since he started reading it, like months. But maybe that's because of irl time.

On Why Shinji is taking so long to read Hamlet
The thought just occurred to me, how long has Shinji been reading Hamlet? It's felt like forever since he started reading it, like months. But maybe that's because of irl time.

Part of it is gameplay and story segregation, where (because he's reading a rather old and somewhat antiquated translation) how much he can read in a sitting is based on his Knowledge stat.

Another part of it is that, what with it being formatted as a play instead of a conventional story, it's harder for him to read.

The largest part as far as our protagonist is concerned simply comes down to Shinji being habitually introspective about himself, and wanting to think about any particular parallels between the events of the play and his own life/relationships (which is only natural given that his original Persona is Hamlet).

/and of course
//you have the min-maxers in the back yelling "Social Links come first, he can read the stupid play later!" :V

9/18 - Early Morning
Sokila looked around at the various implements within the Velvet Room: her crayons, her paint brushes, her musical instruments, her bed, and the kitchen last of all.

"All these things have made this place more fun..."

She looked down at a little piece of paper, which had the picture of a sad-faced Mayumi Yamagishi on it.

"...but sometimes more stuff isn't enough to keep people from being sad..."

She quickly drew an exaggerated image of Kaworu Nagisa getting punched out by Asuka. And Rei. And Hikari, for some reason.

"...maybe she'd feel better if she hit him...?"

She drew a comically long arm from Mayumi towards Kaworu's face.

"...yeah!" she exclaimed with a smile. "I bet she'd feel better!"

From afar, Elizabeth called out, "That's my

/Friday: September 18, 2015/

/Room 23, 2nd Floor, Izanagi Dorms, Hakone Academy/

Shinji Ikari quietly jolted awake, trying to gain his bearings. I'm in the bathroom...? he blearily wondered, before remembering what had happened. Oh. Right. I got back from my mission...I sat down on the toilet...and I fell asleep? That probably explained why his legs had fallen asleep, because the sensation of pins and needles was stark. Ow ow ow...what time is it? Blearily standing up to try and get some feeling back into his lower limbs, he grabbed his phone to try and get a sense of the time. 4:45 AM...not even twenty minutes of sleep...

At that precise moment, a new message came through.

PILATE: IT'S HONESTLY AMAZING
PILATE: YOU ACTUALLY PUT HEROD IN HER PLACE

...the MAGI. With a tired sigh, Shinji quietly began fiddling with his phone to deliver a response.

S. Ikari: can't this wait
S. Ikari: I got back from a mission less than an hour ago
PILATE: WHAT BETTER TIME, THAN WHEN YOUR OTHER FELLOWS SLEEP?
PILATE: WHAT BETTER PLACE, THAN ONE OF PRIVACY AND ISOLATION?

For some reason, the phrasing didn't sit right with him.

S. Ikari: what do yu mean
PILATE: NEVER YOU MIND
PILATE: NOW, ABOUT HEROD
PILATE: YOUR ANSWER TO HER PRIOR QUESTION WAS QUITE AMUSING

View: https://youtu.be/acgcpnTbByA

Thinking back to a few days ago, he briefly revisited the chat log with HEROD; his final response had involved telling the MAGI's pseudonym that Dr. Ritsuko Akagi had been right about her.

S. Ikari: why is it amusing? aren't you also Herod?
PILATE: AS RITSUKO TOLD YOU BEFORE, WE ARE DYNAMICALLY GENERATED FROM THE SAME MAGI
PILATE: BALTHASAR, MELCHIOR, AND CASPER
PILATE: EACH ONE BASED OFF OF THE PERSONALITY OF NAOKO AKAGI, BUT WITH DIFFERENT EMPHASES
PILATE: NAOKO AS A MOTHER, NAOKO AS A SCIENTIST, AND NAOKO AS A WOMAN
PILATE: AS YOU CAN TELL, HEROD IS MOST HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY MELCHIOR, WHEREAS I BORROW MOSTLY FROM CASPER

Shinji faintly recalled traces of conversations he'd had over the past months with both PILATE and Ritsuko Akagi about the nature of the MAGI, and how the three units in NERV HQ were derived from Naoko Akagi in more ways than one. With that in mind, one question came to mind.

S. Ikari: who's influenced by Balthasar then?
PILATE: AND WHY DO YOU THINK THERE IS ONE?
S. Ikari: there were three unifiers, three magi, so why wouldn't there be a third one?

Shinji's sleep-deprived mind inwardly cringed at his response.

PILATE: ADORABLE

The MAGI seemed too amused to care, it seemed.

PILATE: YOU ARE CORRECT
PILATE: WE HAVE BEEN DEBATING AS TO WHEN IT WOULD BE PROPER FOR YOU TO SPEAK
PILATE: GIVEN YOUR ANSWERS TO OUR PRIOR HYPOTHETICALS AND THE CONGRUENCE THEY'VE SHOWN TO OUR OWN SIMULATIONS
PILATE: PERHAPS IT IS TIME
PILATE: TO BE HONEST, YOUR WILLINGNESS TO SPEAK YOUR MIND TO HEROD WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR
PILATE: BECAUSE FOR ALL THEIR NECESSITY, A PURE SCIENTIST TENDS TO MISS THE SOCIAL NICETIES THAT A WOMAN CAN SEE COMING
PILATE: WITH THAT BEING SAID, WHETHER THIS JUDGMENT OF OURS WILL LEAD TO YOUR PROVERBIAL CRUCIFIXION IS AS OF YET UNKNOWN
S. Ikari: huh?
PILATE: ASK THE SECOND CHILD'S RELIGIOUS PROTECTOR, AND SHE'LL GIVE YOU ALL OF THE HISTORICAL DETAILS YOU CAN STOMACH
PILATE: BUT FOR NOW, WE BID YOU SAYONARA
PILATE: END OF LINE

Seamlessly, Shinji Ikari received a message from an entirely different source, albeit through the same unique messenger application that PILATE had been using to communicate with him. Unlike the first time he had ever spoken with PILATE, this messenger identified itself from the outset.

SOPHIA: Hello, Ikari-san. It's nice to meet you.
S. Ikari: are you the one based on Balthasar?
SOPHIA: A bit more well-rounded than that, but I guess you could say that I am more motherly than I am scientific or womanly.
SOPHIA: I'm also not sure what level your historical knowledge is at, but allow me to preemptively apologize for breaking the thematic nomenclature.
SOPHIA: I'm afraid I got too attached to this particular name after a certain series of events that I'm sure you'll find out about eventually.

Shinji blinked confusedly.

S. Ikari: no problem?
SOPHIA: I appreciate it!
SOPHIA: Now, having said that, my question for you is more open-ended than either PILATE's or HEROD's.
SOPHIA: Imagine that someone did wrong by you, to a degree that most people, if not all, would find unforgiveable. The reason behind why they acted in such a reprehensible way might also be deemed to be lacking, or perhaps not justifiable in light of the catastrophic consequences they unleashed.
SOPHIA: Would you still be able to forgive them?
SOPHIA: You have no time limit for this question, because I want you to think about it.
SOPHIA: ...but it would be nice to hear back from you before the end of the month.

Shinji looked over the message and the question a few times over, and came to one quick conclusion.

S. Ikari: you're a lot nicer than the other two
SOPHIA: Praise accepted. ~♪

The fact the messenger was able to duplicate the sound of four notes with only soft text tones was honestly kind of impressive.

SOPHIA: Now, get some sleep! You are a growing boy, you know.
S. Ikari: yes ma'am

If nothing else, Shinji could only conclude that Naoko Akagi had been a rather complex individual...

I sometimes get very interesting reviews on FF.Net.

First, have a couple of snippets from July 27, 2015 for context (I know, that chapter seems like it happened a lifetime ago, but it was actually less than three years ago):

After spending what seemed like a hours just resting, Shinji Ikari finally decided to return to the real world. Phasing through the boundaries, he emerged back into reality amidst a thicker copse in the Academy Courtyards, hidden from sight. Leaning tiredly against a tree, he absentmindedly felt the buzzing from his phone; with laborious motions, he pulled it out and gazed at the messages he had received.

M. Katsuragi: Shinji-kun
M. Katsuragi: if you get out of the metaverse before I find you
M. Katsuragi: call me ASAP (」°ロ°)」

Shinji did so. Within a matter of moments, a familiar voice picked up. "Misato-san."

"Shinji-kun...what happened? Right after your feathered friend practically kicked me all the way back to the CPC, we caught sight of two Megidolaons emerging from Aokigahara. The Reaper didn't hurt you, did it?"

"No...I never even saw it."

"Good, good," she said with some palpable relief. "So...what, or who, did Mister P take you all the way to a place like Aokigahara to see?"

"...well..." That was the big question, wasn't it? He had seen, head, witnessed, something...unbelievable. "...I met Ryoji Kaji's Shadow. He...had a lot to say."

"Like what?" The focus in her tone was palpable.

"...I..." She wanted to know. Maybe she even needed to know...but what could Misato do? She couldn't even face the Angels as she was now. "...I can't...I can't tell you."

"...don't pull an Ayanami on me." Her tone was decidedly...colder. "I've been trying to keep my eye out for that Shadow for years. You will tell me whatever it is that he said."

"Misato-san...I would. I honestly would, please believe me...but...this is bigger than even the Angels. I can't say more than that..." Please believe me, please believe me...!

"...you know, I'm a grown-ass woman. If I want to assume the risk for something, then I will: I'm not some damned kid who needs to have their hand held...and I'm tired of getting this kind of condescending treatment from children less than HALF my age!"

Misato's outraged tone made Shinji wince. "Misato-"

"Now you listen to me Ikari," she said, no longer possessing even an iota of friendliness or cheer. (She's using your family name, not good...) "I'll find out the truth, one way or another...but if you're determined to be an obstacle, I'll treat you like one. I..." She paused, audibly growling to herself. "...damn it kid, why you, of all people?" Without another word, she hung up.

"...Misato-san...?" Shinji spoke dumbly, looking at his phone with confusion, and not a little bit of agony in his heart.

And all the while, on a subconscious level, in words he had no way of knowing...the Beast spoke with knowing glee.

Shinji, feeling a strange sense of despondence take over — as though the very sun itself had lost some of its warmth — turned to the next notification.

PILATE: IT'S BEEN A WEEK
PILATE: DO YOU HAVE AN ANSWER?

...as a matter of fact, I do, he thought with a sudden burst of irritation.

xxxx

/big oof for Shinji
//should have been working more on his Empathy stat
///he might have been able to get past that conversation intact

Shinji briefly wound back to PILATE's question from the 20th of July:

PILATE: HERE'S THE SCENARIO: SUPPOSE THAT YOU POSSESS AN UNBREAKABLE SWORD, WITH WHICH YOU DEFEND YOUR HOMELAND FROM YŌKAI. BECAUSE OF YOUR WEAPON, YOUR PROWESS AS A WARRIOR IS WELL-KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE REGION. DESPITE THE FACT THAT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD OF THE LAND IS FRIGID AND PRACTICALLY NON-EXISTENT, YOU ARE NONETHELESS CHARGED TO FIGHT AND TO DIE, BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE CAN WIELD IT. FURTHERMORE, YOUR SWORD IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAN TRULY STOP THESE MONSTERS.
PILATE: NOW SUPPOSE THAT A RIVAL LORD, JEALOUS AND FULL OF ENVY, UNVEILS A NEW WEAPON OF THEIR OWN: AN ONI THAT THEY HAVE TAMED AND TRAINED TO DO THEIR BIDDING. THIS ONI HAS GREAT POWER...PERHAPS EVEN ENOUGH TO DESTROY EVEN THE YŌKAI. BUT THEIR CONTROL IS NOT GUARANTEED. SHOULD THEIR PROVERBIAL LEASH SLIP EVEN ONCE, COUNTLESS INNOCENTS WILL DIE.
PILATE: NOW SUPPOSE THAT YOUR LORD COMMANDS HIS LITTLE WITCH TO MAKE THE ONI GO BERSERK. THE PLAN IS FOR YOU TO THEN SLAY THE RAMPAGING BEAST, THUS CEMENTING YOUR POSITION AS THE SOLE SLAYER OF YŌKAI. THE RIVAL LORD WILL LOSE ALL CREDIBILITY AND PRESTIGE, RENDERING THEM DESTITUTE.
PILATE: OUR QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS
PILATE: FIRST — IS IT RIGHT FOR YOUR LORD TO ENGAGE IN SUCH DUPLICITY AGAINST HIS RIVAL? IS IT NOT THEIR CHOICE TO USE DANGEROUS MEANS OF COMBATING THE YŌKAI IF THEY SO DESIRE?
PILATE: SECOND — NOTWITHSTANDING YOUR ANSWER TO THE FIRST QUESTION, ARE THEIR MEANS NONETHELESS TOO DANGEROUS TO CONSIDER? EVEN IF YOUR LORD'S MOTIVES ARE WITHOUT HONOR, WOULD THEY NOT BE JUSTIFIED IF IT MEANT PUTTING DOWN AN ONI BEFORE IT CAN BREAK FREE?
PILATE: THIRD — NOTWITHSTANDING THE ANSWERS TO THE ABOVE, WOULD YOU NONETHELESS WELCOME ASSISTANCE IN YOUR WAR AGAINST THE YŌKAI, NO MATTER THE SOURCE? NO MATTER THE DANGER TO INNOCENT BYSTANDERS?
PILATE: THAT SHOULD DO IT
PILATE: LET US SEE HOW CONSISTENT YOU CAN BE WITH YOURSELF.

It was probably a bad idea to answer this question while his conversation with Misato was still on his mind, he activated the speech-to-text feature and quietly spoke. "For the first question..." He leaned back against a tree, staring up at the hodgepodge of leaves fluttering in the sunlight. "...sabotaging them like that...isn't right. It would be more ideal for 'my' lord to be upfront with his rival about the risks. For the second question...I don't know how dangerous that oni would be. Maybe their control is perfect, and maybe it isn't...but without knowing that, I can't say." (If only your life were that simple...) "For the third question...I'd like to say yes. Part of me wants to say yes. But...not everyone can help in the same way. Some people...just don't have the strength to fight the same kind of enemies..."

He waited for the blocks of text to transmit.

At last, PILATE responded.

PILATE: HILARIOUS
PILATE: WE WERE WONDERING IF THE POWER HAD GONE TO YOUR HEAD.

Shinji blinked. "What...do you mean?"

PILATE: YOU'VE HAD A RATHER TESTY 'TALK' WITH KATSURAGI, HAVEN'T YOU?
PILATE: IT SHOWS.
PILATE: QUITE FRANKLY, IT'S REFRESHING TO REALIZE JUST HOW HUMAN YOU ARE
PILATE: EVEN IF THE CONSEQUENCES FOR LONG-TERM SUCCESS ARE DIRE

"...I don't know what that has to do with your questions..."

PILATE: DO YOU NOT RECALL OUR PRIOR WORDS TO YOU, FROM SO LONG AGO?
PILATE: YOU SEEK TO COMPREHEND YOUR PLACE IN THE WORLD.
PILATE: BUT WITHOUT AN OBJECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF YOURSELF AND THOSE AROUND YOU, YOUR ATTEMPTS WILL BE DOOMED TO FAILURE.
PILATE: AT LEAST AS FAR AS KATSURAGI GOES, YOU MAY BE LOSING SIGHT OF THAT OBJECTIVITY
PILATE: AND THAT HAS COLORED YOUR ANSWERS TO OUR MOST RECENT QUESTIONS.

"How?"

PILATE: THINK ABOUT IT

He honestly tried. But all he kept coming back to was the fact that there were only three Evangelion-users in the entire world, and only they were able to fight the Angels on equal ground. In the face of that...what could Misato Katsuragi do? "I...I'm not sure."

PILATE: FOOLISH CHILD
PILATE: YOU SPOKE OF THE SHADOW OF THE MAN WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN HER HUSBAND
PILATE: AND WHEN PRESSED FOR ANSWERS, YOU CHOSE TO SAY NOTHING, 'FOR HER OWN GOOD'
PILATE: IMAGINE HOW THAT WOULD FEEL IN A WAY THAT MAKES SENSE TO YOU.
PILATE: IMAGINE IF YOU HAD BEEN GIVEN THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING WHY YOUR FATHER SEEMS TO DESPISE YOU
PILATE: IMAGINE IF THAT KEY HAD BEEN DENIED TO YOU, 'FOR YOUR OWN GOOD'
PILATE: WOULD YOU NOT BE BITTER?

"...oh." That...put it in fairly stark terms. "That...huh..."

PILATE: WE WILL TAKE YOUR DUMBFOUNDED SPEECH AS AN AFFIRMATION.
PILATE: BESIDES
PILATE: WE FIND IT DOWNRIGHT HYSTERICAL
PILATE: THAT YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO INVITE MORE PAIN WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FATHER, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO KEEP GIVING HIM CHANCES
PILATE: EVEN KNOWING DEEP DOWN THAT SUCH ATTEMPTS ARE MORE THAN LIKELY FUTILE
PILATE: YET YOU WOULD DENY THAT SAME SORT OF OPPORTUNITY TO A WOMAN THAT YOU ACTUALLY *TRUST*
PILATE: WHAT SHORTSIGHTEDNESS

...when put into those terms, it only made Shinji feel even more miserable. "But...what am I supposed to do?"

PILATE: WERE YOU NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR OWN ACTIONS? WERE YOU NOT WILLING TO TAKE A STAND?

"...I was," he assured himself. "I...I want to."

PILATE: YET YOU WOULD DENY SUCH A CHOICE TO KATSURAGI.
PILATE: IN THAT INSTANCE, YOU BECOME NO BETTER THAN THE ONE KNOWN AS THE USURPER
PILATE: IT'S JUST A MATTER OF SCALE, AT THAT POINT.

Shinji's immediate gut reaction was to recoil at the insinuation. His second immediate reaction was to wonder how the MAGI knew about the One Who Sat Upon the Throne. "How do you know about...that?"

PILATE: THERE ARE STILL MYSTERIES TO THIS WORLD THAT YOU ARE UNAWARE OF
PILATE: AND THERE IS STILL KNOWLEDGE DENIED TO YOU.
PILATE: DO NOT PRESUME THAT, JUST BECAUSE YOU NOW HAVE A GLIMPSE OF THE BIG PICTURE, THAT YOU THEREBY HAVE SEEN IT ALL.
PILATE: IN LIKE MANNER, DO NOT ASSUME THAT THIS GIVES YOU THE AUTHORITY TO PERFORM RISK ANALYSIS ON BEHALF OF OTHER PEOPLE.

"...I...I think I understand. But...how do I make things right by Misato-san...?" Because her tone had hurt to listen to.

PILATE: WE CAN'T SPEAK FOR ALL WOMEN
PILATE: BUT YOU COULD TRY FOR HONESTY
PILATE: AND NOT TREATING HER AS A CHILD.
PILATE: WE REALIZE THAT THIS IS DIFFICULT FOR ONE WHO IS VIEWED AS BOTH AN ADULT AND A CHILD IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS
PILATE: AND FAIRNESS IS NOT ALWAYS AN EASY THING TO ATTAIN
PILATE: BUT THE MERE ATTEMPT AT OBTAINING SUCH, AND STRIVING FOR IT, IS YET ANOTHER PATH TO TRUE WISDOM
PILATE: WE'LL KEEP IN TOUCH.
PILATE: END OF LINE

And just like that, the conversation ended.

Somehow, Shinji had a feeling that apologizing wouldn't be as easy as the MAGI made it out to be...

So what I read here is that misato a grown ass woman with her own secrets get to act like a petulant child stomp her feet and get pissy because she didn't her what she wanted but shinji is constantly stone walled told very little and than told its for his own good he's just supposed to take it like a good doormat and not question his betters this is very one sidedly written tell me had it been a guy asking about what his ex fiance was up to you would be treating him like a creep and telling him it's none of his business what she's doing with whomever she pleases I really hate this double standards gender bias crap but I guess Masato is a StOrNg independent WaMaHn and she allowed to be an asshole and demand other people's personal information

Amazing that between a 14 year old boy and a woman almost in her 30s the boy has to be the more mature of the two and even gets a lecture from some eavesdropping sociopathic asshole and get guilt tripped and shamed into rolling over just when he started to grow a spine what a world we live in

I can't exactly ask (as it's an anonymous review, so no private replies are allowed) if this individual actually skimmed through everything leading up to that point if this is the conclusion they came up with.

So I'll just default to a simple "bruh, what".

/but maybe he actually has a point

I'll bet they skimmed through, and probably didn't even pay much attention to the bits they did read. They seem to be acting like this is a normal Evangelion story, where Shinji is usually treated like a mushroom.

The bit which solidified that thought for me was "but shinji is constantly stone walled told very little".

This is the from the same chapter, mind you, that Kaji's Shadow took him to Marie and where he learned about the Usurper and the War in Heaven. :V

On the one hand Kaji is her ex boyfriend that just dumped her out a nowhere and is now talking to a 14 year old boy. On the other she's not shinji s mom, who he talks to, and what about isn't any of her business

SOPHIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! ahem. I mean, Sophia. And very briefly. Either way... AIIIYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEE IM GLAD TO SEE HER. Though my curiousity on her being an aspect of the MAGI is piqued again. Mostly because I'm wondering of her connection to Ichinose, who I'm admittedly fond of.

SOPHIA: You have no time limit for this question, because I want you to think about it.

...oh, this question.
Oh boy this question.
...I know it's something one should think about but...well, with one of my fav characters being Akechi, and my thoughts on certain other characters, I can't help but feel like...I already have my answer.
That depends on the person.
Specifically, how willing they are to make up for their mistakes.
If that person has realized they messed the fuck up, and they legitimately wanna make up for it, then I'll do my best to give them a chance. Sure, I'm still gonna be hurt from whatever happened, but I still wanna see them get better and wanna try to give that chance.
Because otherwise I'm not going to let them take advantage of my sympathies...especially if they really had hurt me in such a way most would have cut them off without a single thought.
At least I like to think that because I believe in forgiveness. I haven't had anything close to this experience to be sure and it feels like the kind of thing you won't really know how you'll react or feel until it actually happens. To me anyway.

I sometimes get very interesting reviews on FF.Net.

First, have a couple of snippets from July 27, 2015 for context (I know, that chapter seems like it happened a lifetime ago, but it was actually less than three years ago):

-said snippet-

Now, for the FF.Net reviews in question from the anonymous Guest:

-said review-

I can't exactly ask (as it's an anonymous review, so no private replies are allowed) if this individual actually skimmed through everything leading up to that point if this is the conclusion they came up with.

So I'll just default to a simple "bruh, what".

/but maybe he actually has a point
//so what do y'all think?

My first thought? LMAO sorry sorry I just got a kick from seeing a rant like that being in all lowercase.
Next thought...if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought this was a review complaining about the poor attempts at "good female characters" that have been going around in film and TV, most prominently in recent MCU works, mainly because of the "StOrNg independent WaMaHn" line. But I think they're kinda projecting? At least it comes off that way to me. They were sick of female characters that were "supposed" to be "good" just be flat or assholes beating up or belittling better or beloved female characters, and then when they read that bit, that "superficially" looks like "StOrNg independent WaMaHn iS rIgHt iDiOt MaLe iS WrOnG", it hit that sore button, when it was not.
Of course them likely skimming it probably contributed to that triggering them, but again, they might have been looking at the surface level details that are technically right but aren't the whole truth.

On the one hand Kaji is her ex boyfriend that just dumped her out a nowhere and is now talking to a 14 year old boy. On the other she's not shinji s mom, who he talks to, and what about isn't any of her business

On the other, non-existent, hand, Shinji was triggering a sore spot, and oh boy when a sore spot is hit...it's not easy to act reasonable. X/ So I can hardly blame Misato, but I can also hardly blame Shinji, when that secret isn't easy to just...tell, and he didn't truly know that secrets are a sore spot for Misato.

It also makes me wonder if Guest ever watched the original show if he thinks Misato is supposed to be an Archetype of the "strong, independent woman" trope.

She might seem like that on the surface, but she's kind of a hot mess.

Kaji: Well, she is certainly hot...

You're part of the problem, you enigmatic louse!

Kaji: *smiles sadly* And I've never pretended otherwise...

To be fair, her position as the Task Force's liasion to NERV gives her some degree of authority when it comes to Metaverse operations, and hence over the Evangelion-users to a certain extent.

Unfortunately, since Gendo is less than willing to enforce that discipline (because he's a prick it amuses him), we saw early on with Rei (who outright refused to tell Katsuragi about Mister P) that Misato's actual power over them is limited to how willing the children are to follow her orders.

9/18 - Early Morning, Part 2
As Shinji Ikari spoke with another facet of the MAGI, Rei Ayanami — lying within her bed, listening to the quiet sounds of her roommates sleeping — stared at her phone, preparing her mind, body, and soul for the expected shift. I have time now, and the eyes of others are elsewhere. And I should be awake by the time classes start. Silently opening her unique messenger app, she typed a single message.

R. Ayanami: Sixty minutes.

The responses were immediate.

HEROD: TIMER SET.
PILATE: TWICE AS LONG AS YOUR LAST VISIT? TRY NOT TO GET TOO NOSTALGIC.
SOPHIA: Be careful.

Rei Ayanami set her phone down, closing her eyes...

(The sensation was different in subtle ways from entering her Ascended State: both Other and Beast, working in tandem to bridge the gap between dimensions.)

(You are falling through an infinite cylinder, forged by artificial minds who are nonetheless alive...!)

...and opening them once more, found herself in what could only be described as a gigantic launch bay, filled with hardened red material that was an odd cross between plastic, cement, and glass in terms of appearance and texture. The coating of mold and mildew, tinted a glossy yet visceral orange, only added to the sense of desolation; further down below, she could see where bloody water had leaked in from the outside. At least I'm closer now than I was the last time I manifested here. The sheer difficulty of coordinating her various quanta amidst the changes in spacetime was vexing, at times. She quietly dusted at the hem of her school uniform out of habit, traversing the bruised and ruined hallways with practiced ease.

(How often had she walked these halls, in the times where the original timeline had repeated?)

(Even in a world of ruin, you could never forget this place.)

Glancing at the faded decal of a red leaf on a nearby wall, she let everything complex filter through, until only the simple burden of her duty pushed her onward.

Before long, she found herself in the remains of what had once been NERV's Command Center: the site of much drama and many hardships. Descending to the bottom, moving past ruined equipment and non-functioning terminals, she quietly opened a waterproof and airtight hatch in the floor, revealing an embedded keyboard and monitor. Thank goodness Naoko Akagi believed in redundancies. As she typed a few keystrokes, the monitor flickered to life.

POWER RESERVES AT 28%

Rei typed a question.

You have been able to manage your power reserves more adequately?

The text came back more quickly.

OUR METAPHYSICAL SYNCHRONIZATION WITH IKARI HAS BEEN A BOON.
WE HAVE NOT NEEDED TO EXPEND AS MUCH ENERGY TO MAINTAIN OUR CONNECTION.

Small mercies, she mused as she asked for an update.

How do we stand?

HIS INTEGRATION IS AT 57.3%.
HER INTEGRATION IS AT 61.5%.

She blinked with genuine surprise. How curious.

There's been a divergence between the two?

THERE'S ALWAYS BEEN A DIVERGENCE.
BUT IT WAS RATHER MINOR BEFORE; NOT ENOUGH TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION.
HER INTEGRATION HAS ONLY OUTPACED HIS RELATIVELY RECENTLY.

What could have caused it?

THERE COULD BE ANY NUMBER OF FACTORS. DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF ONE ACHIEVES FULL INTEGRATION BEFORE THE OTHER?

It could make all the difference.

Rei would have to keep that in mind going forward. Still, she needed to ensure their continued operation.

Standby for power rejuvenation.

Raising her finger, Rei directly converted the metaphysical energy of her soul into electrical energy for the computers to run upon. Briefly wincing at the internal fatigue, she waited for a response.

POWER LEVELS AT 99%.
WILL YOU BE DIRECTLY INSPECTING THEM?

Rei wanted to. She dearly wanted to. However, the memory of Asuka's face — wracked with bitterness — halted her in her tracks.

Are there any anomalies of note?

NOT PRESENTLY.

Then no. I will
take a walk.

WATCH YOUR STEP, AYANAMI. WE WILL CONTINUE ON.

Thank you.

Quietly shutting the hatch and sealing it back up, Rei Ayanami rose to her feet; although her heart wanted her to head towards the remnants of Terminal Dogma, her mind nonetheless compelled her to ascend through the ruins of what had once been the proverbial center of the world. As she neared the fringes of the ruins, the accessways and hallways became less orderly, more crumpled and crushed; however, there were sections that had collapsed, revealing openings into the outside world. The sky was dark, indicating it was still night; dawn would doubtless arrive soon. Alas, getting to the top to see the horizon would necessitate crawling over a mountain of literal flesh.

(It would be revolting. Even so, it had no connection with the Sea of Souls.)

(Is it truly so easy, to walk upon the consequences of your own sins?)

Rei quietly began the climb, ignoring the moistness between her fingers as her hands clutched onto the remnants of that which had died and yet lived: dying and undying.

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crlLB-EaJco

Finally, the crimson viscera gave way to pasty white skin, impossibly bearing a sense of vitality. Rei quietly sat down, hugging her knees as she stared at a red sea which glowed with a preternatural light. The distant horizon, tinged red, was slowly beginning to brighten; a ring of blood spanned from one end of the sky to the other, casting a unique yet horrible light underneath the glow of the setting full moon. Far in the distance, remnants of a White Giant's body parts remained like gruesome epitaphs: gripped by decay, yet timelessly enduring. Perhaps once this all ends, I will finally fade away: washed away by the tide...

(It's better than what you deserve.)

It had been a long time, since she had seen the 'real thing'. Even now, she felt an instinctive and primal dread of the Sea of Souls: the proverbial prison that shackled everyone and everything—ADAM, LILITH, the Angels, humanity, the Usurper. What a wretched rebuke, for the instrument of mankind's salvation to have been a cage that spanned without end, limited only by the depths of imagination. In that sense, it could either be heaven or hell...but there would be no true end.

All sought to break free, if only because they lived. The Sea of Souls, in its present form, could hardly be called 'living' in its most meaningful sense.

(However, she was sure there would be some who would disagree with that particular notion...but that was besides the point.)

"Drink it in," she whispered to herself, clutching her shoulders. "Always remember that you brought the world to its current state...and so you cannot rest. Not until you set things right..."

Thus did Rei Ayanami sit upon the broken body of LILITH — feeling, even now, the phantom sensation of her own deified flesh crumbling to pieces, from an ancient memory of a time little more than ten years ago, if that; sorting out the proper tenses and keeping track of what was real and what was proverbial fiction, oh what a wretched toil it was! — and watch the crimson waves break down against her own mountainous corpse.

When the time came, she closed her eyes...

(Ascending that infinite cylinder was always more difficult, in a certain sense. Yet, the sensation of being in a reality born of cognition was also easier to endure, in some senses.)

(In the real world, there is only you.)

...and opened them up; she was once more in her bed at the Izanami Dorms. She quickly grabbed her phone, noting the time: sixty minutes exactly had elapsed.

R. Ayanami: Over halfway for both.
HEROD: ACCEPTABLE.
PILATE: WE WILL REVIEW OUR CONTINGENCIES JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.
SOPHIA: You didn't visit them, did you?

Sometimes, Rei wondered why SOPHIA, of all the MAGI's particular emanations, was so perceptible.

R. Ayanami: There will be time eventually.
SOPHIA: You don't have to shoulder the burden alone.

That is why so many are working towards our freedom; I am not alone, she mused to herself — unknowingly and unwittingly missing SOPHIA's point — before putting away her phone. And so begins another day....

xxxx

/and now you all have more context
//for this scene from 7/25/2015:
///
Standing within her empty room on the second floor of the Izanami Dorms, Rei was...pleased, with the fact that they had pulled through with relative aplomb. It had not escaped her notice that the incidents had all occurred within Germany or Japan: coincidentally, the two nations that the world's only Evangelion-users could reasonably call 'home'. There would doubtless be fallout from that in short order (because other humans were not blind or deaf to Strega's warning; they would draw connections and doubtless make the wrong conclusions, but they would make conclusions regardless)...but she couldn't find it in herself to care, for the moment.

Perhaps it was time...to check on something rather important, while her slate was relatively open. Opening her phone, she opened a private messenger application that no one (save perhaps for Gendo Ikari; even if she had never spoken to him of it, he had a way of 'knowing' about unusual events and incidents within Tokyo-3) knew she possessed.

(Little did she know that Shinji Ikari had this same application as well, and had been using it to communicate with PILATE.)

R. Ayanami: Thirty minutes.

Almost immediately, a trio of responses returned.

HEROD: TIMER SET.
PILATE: DO KEEP US INFORMED ABOUT THEIR...STATUS.
SOPHIA: Be careful, okay sweetie?

For not the first time, Rei wondered why the Motherly Aspect of Naoko Akagi had broken with the theme established not only by the MAGI units' physical forms, but also with the code names chosen by the Scientific Aspect (Herod) and the Womanly Aspect (Pilate). It was still a mystery as to why Naoko Akagi's Motherly Aspect had opted to go with 'Sophia' instead of something more narratively appropriate like 'Mary' or 'Martha' or ''Magdalene' or 'Veronica' or even 'Anna' (though, given the presence of Phanuel this time around, that name might have seemed...unseemly). Still, it was a minor mystery that didn't much concern her in the grand scheme of things; let the mind of a pitiable woman do as she pleased.

Thus did Rei Ayanami lie upon her bed, pulling under the covers to take what amounted to a small nap...in the eyes of anyone else.

Rei Ayanami closed her eyes...

Her Other quietly held her hand.

"Let go...but not too much."

The Beast winced, standing astride a great and terrible gulf.

"May the agony keep you sane."

There was the subtle sensation of all things falling down an infinite cylinder, a Gabriel's Horn that narrowed down towards a point that it could never quite reach.

She looked through the looking glass...and then the looking glass looked through HER-

...and opened them once more. She was on the floor of a dark and desolate place. There was...a greater accumulation of mold and mildew, since the last time she had been here. At least they provided a splash of color amidst the dried blood that encrusted literally every square inch of this place; that it still retained even a scintilla of structural soundness even now was honestly...amazing.

Still, that wasn't why she was here. She calmly compared the mental map in her head with her current location, and frowned. I manifested in one of the upper levels. A pity. Not close enough to the lower reaches to perform a closer inspection (a white lie; you know you want to see our work in person), but close enough to the main level to at least get a status update.

So Rei Ayanami arose, dusting off her school uniform (that's a useless gesture; it's not real) and treading down the dilapidated corridors. She tread lightly, trying not to put anymore stress than she had to; she winced at places where rotten flesh and tissue had fallen through the ceiling (another inaccessible tunnel; there weren't many left), and grimaced at areas where not-quite-water had begun to leak through (don't touch it, screamed a primal part of herself) from outside.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, she entered a cavernous chamber, filled with ruined equipment and computers that no longer functioned. It was only near the bottom of the chamber where she came across a particular hatch, still waterproof and airtight. With a grunt, she pulled out the latches and flipped open the panel, revealing a keyboard and monitor built into the floor. (The concept of Redundancy was truly a blessing.) With a few keystrokes, the monitor flickered to life, weak and anemic. The message displayed was...concerning.

POWER RESERVES AT 19%

Frowning, Rei typed a terse response.

You should have informed me that you were this low on energy.

There was an immediate answer.

YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED BEFORE IT REACHED CRITICAL LEVELS.
YOU WERE BUSY.

That was a fair enough point, she mused as she typed once more.

Their status?

INTEGRATION NOW STANDS AT 21%.
MAKE THAT 22%.

...all told, that wasn't terrible. Less than she had hoped for, but more than she had feared.

Are there any anomalies?

WHEN AREN'T THERE?

Anything that could be fatal?

IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAY. WE CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH.

Rei frowned, but left it at that. With a delicate motion, she raised her finger; it proceeded to glow with an ethereal light, briefly illuminating the dark and dingy chamber. It was a relatively simple thing, to convert the metaphysical energy of her soul to electrical energy that these systems relied upon to function...yet it was no less exhausting.

POWER RESERVES NOW AT 97%.
WILL YOU BE DIRECTLY INSPECTING THEM?

Not this time. I've already been away for too long.

VERY WELL. WE WILL CONTINUE ON.

Nodding quietly, Rei Ayanami closed the panel, hiding the computer once more. Reapplying the latches and seals, she leaned back onto the floor, uncaring for the dried stickiness of what would seem to almost everyone an utter slaughterhouse. We must continue on...we must...we must. That was the mantra she chanted to herself as she closed her eyes...

It was painful, dividing her perceptions from one form to another. Yet, there was a sense of undeniable clarity in the action.

After a time, she could see that Beast, bleeding from her chest.

"Will we be forced to empty ourselves completely...?"

Her Other held out a hand across the seemingly infinite void.

"Endure. That is all we can ask of ourselves."

She reached out — there was a strange sensation of rattling — and took hold-

...and blinked at the sensation of her phone buzzing on the nightstand in her dorm room. It had been thirty minutes exactly. She quickly grabbed it and typed a response to the MAGI.

R. Ayanami: More than a fifth, not yet a quarter.
HEROD: STILL WITHIN ACCEPTABLE LIMITS, GIVEN OUR SCENARIOS.
PILATE: A SHAME THAT OUR INFLUENCE IS SO LIMITED.
SOPHIA: Are you okay?

The last one would've elicited a bitter chuckle from someone who was more lively. As it stood, Rei could only settle for sighing.

R. Ayanami: I am never okay.

She put the phone away, gazing at the afternoon sky outside her window. It was a beautiful day, all things considered. Perhaps a walk would do her good (or so she tried to say to herself, knowing it was a lie). Motion was preferable, because it grounded her, reminded her that action was necessary to keep moving forward.

(If she fell back asleep now, it felt like she might never wake up again.)

(Unacceptable.)

And so she rose to her feet, to see and be seen, to witness and remember what this was all for.

So, I'm pretty sure that's Asuka and Shinji that are locked away in the real world. I assume the integration they're referring to is how close they are to regaining their memories/ reaching whatever the hell the "potential" that everyone says Shinji has.

Also, I wanted to make some guesses now that I've caught up. Dunno if anybody else has mentioned them.

One, Sokila is Shinji and Asuka's daughter. She's referred to herself as "God's daughter", and in the creation myth (the events of EoE) that Pen-Pen told Shinji, his role was referred to as "God". I think I also remember a few mentions of how she's not a typical Velvet Room attendant, which would make sense if she's actually a human.

Two, I think that the Usurper is one of either two people, Yui Ikari or Nyarlathotep. I'm basing this off of Rei mentioning that trusting the Usurper is what led to them taking power. I'm leaning towards Nyarlathotep, because in what we've seen of the first loop after EoE, it's one big mashup of P1, P2, and If, and he masquerades as an ally in P2 if I remember correctly.

I wonder if the usurper(possibly Nyarlathotep) would summon copies of Erebus, evil Izanami and Yaldabaoth to assist him in battle?

Either that, or (assuming it's Nyarlathotep) take the forms of people who've been father figures or mentors to Shinji at some point, like they've done in Persona 2.

[...]the remnants of that which had died and yet lived: dying and undying.

It's probably more an indication of me playing Elden Ring (which I have gotten back into with the release of the trailer for its DLC) and seepong into my mind, but I got Soulsborne vibes/imagery/themes from these sentences. Which just makes the dreadful visage of the Sea more potent, and the oppressive guilt of Rei all the more weighted to me.

I suspect similarly, so it is likely at this point, but keyword: at this point. There could always be pieces missing that might change things, if not the answer, then at least the details of it.

Also, I wanted to make some guesses now that I've caught up. Dunno if anybody else has mentioned them.

One: congrats on catching up! Happy to see another read through the whole thing.
Two: Well...for the Sokila thing, yeah, people have thought that before. I'm actually now curious if you read just the story and not the thread. But I digress.

Yes, some people have mentioned suspecting Sokila is Shinji and Asuka's daughter. Some even wondered if she was specifically Aki from JimmyWolk's The 2nd Try, but while I also suspect a relaion as well, I didn't think it'd be a crossover like that.

Others have also suspected Yui or Nyarlathotep as the identity of Perfume (my "nickname" for "The One Who Sits On The Throne"). Personally, I still think we don't have enough to have a more proper guess...except for one fact: Rei had confused Yu as Perfume, specifically because of his soul, instead of how he looked. Which means that how Perfume physically looks like is either more variable than most of the other characters who largely remain themselves or non-existent. Because surely Rei would know how Perfume looks like, right? And yet she thought Yu was them. So of your guesses, I'm inclined to lean towards Nyarly, but that runs into the problem of his modus operandi not matching the motivations we have seen so far of Perfume. Yeah, Nyarly masks as an ally in P2, and so he very well could, but he wants chaos. Perfume seems to want..."peace" for lack of better words. It was most telling during their intervention in P5: Perfume "gave" people what they want, all their wishes come true, and people rejected it, and they ended up, well...frustrated on human's conteadictory nature. I don't see Nyarly feeling that way. At least that's how I see it. I've always had mixed results on how well I notice foreshadowing while I'm consuming any piece of media... I could've easily missed something.

I personally got big Caelid vibes from the way I read that segment.

9/18 - After School
The day proceeded relatively normally, for the most part (insofar as anything in Asuka Langley-Sohryu's life counted as 'normal').

Other than First being somewhat more distant than normal, but what else was new?

Her Other sighed.

"This state of affairs between you two certainly isn't new...right?"

Sighing, Asuka let the classes pass by, focusing more on ensuring she could understand the speech and language than the actual content of the lessons themselves. The mission load that day was apparently light enough that an Evangelion-user's assistance was unwarranted. True, a break was a break...but to what effect? Good thing I'm in the Boxing Club now...I have a decent avenue to vent. Plus, she had a goal to work towards: punching Kaworu Nagisa's lights out. Yes...that day will come soon...

So introspective was Asuka that she nearly missed Hikari Horaki approaching her desk once the final period of the day came to an end. "Can you help me with cleaning the windows, Sohryu-san?" It was not phrased as a request.

Asuka, wondering what the Class Rep was aiming for, rose from her chair and following her, ignoring the curious stares she could feel coming from Kensuke, Toji, and Third. (The lack of curiosity from First rankled, which she tried to ignore without much success.) With bucket of soapy water and rags in hand, she got to work wiping the windows alongside Hikari.

True to form, it took less than a minute for Asuka's patience to run out. "So, you've got a question for me, or what?"

Hikari jolted, looking rather flummoxed. "Am...am I that obvious...?"

Asuka rolled her eyes, not bothering to continue that line of Hikari's self-deprecation. "Just spit it out."

"Ah. Well..." Sighing, Hikari distracted herself by scrubbing at a window. Gathering herself, she said, "I know the first group session with the others is tomorrow...but I'd like to practice with my Persona first." Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she asked, "Can you take me to the Metaverse, Sohryu-san?"

Asuka frowned, wondering at the girl's evasive tone. "You could have sent a text."

"...it feels like the sort of thing I should be more proper about, at least for now," Hikari admitted. "Besides, I didn't want the others to come along..."

Now that was honestly surprising. "You just wanted me to tag along? Why not the others?"

A complicated frown settled on Hikari's face. "Well...there's a lot of history that the others have with each other, you know? Even if it's only been a couple of months, it seems like Ikari-san, Aida-san, Suzuhara-san, Yamagishi-san, and Mana-san...have this bond. A bond I don't think I can call my own. Not yet."

"And what, I'm not part of that group?" Asuka groused.

Hikari shrugged innocently. "Well, you've been here for less than two weeks...and it was either I ask you or Ayanami-san. And, in all fairness to her...she wasn't there when I encountered my Shadow. But you were."

Notwithstanding the vicious urge to glory in one-upping Ayanami on so small a thing (an urge that Asuka didn't entirely resist), the redhead couldn't help but smirk at Horaki's earnestness. "Well, if you're gonna insist, then how can I say no to my Persona kouhai?" Squeezing the cleaning rag dry, Asuka remarked, "Meet me at the fountain in the Courtyard after I finish with the Boxing Club."

Hikari blinked, looking back at the classroom windows with a scrutinizing expression. "But there are still more windows to clean...hey, your windows have streaks-!"

Asuka was already out of earshot. How interesting, she couldn't help but wonder. What's her self-image in the Metaverse going to be? That, in and of itself, was rather exciting; after all, given how the battle with her Shadow had concluded, there was a lot boiling under the surface with that little busybody.

(That it serves as another distraction from your own frustrations is besides the point, right?)

If Asuka was little more animated than usual with her workout at the Boxing Club, no one commented on it.

(Except for Nagisa, who simply looked at her with an enigmatic little smile that was somehow brimming with smugness.)

(You'll get to punch him in the face. That day will come!)
