It took me about several months to get through chapter 1 through 20-ish of the Persona 3 manga...and then it took me a total of 2 days to get through the rest of the chapters, at about 28-ish, with three 70-90 pages for its last three chapters. Go figure.
More seriously, what prompted my blitzkrieg of reading the rest of the manga was
this video by The4thSnake, talking about how the manga adapts Persona 3...and its problems.
So here I am, having read the manga, and wanting to talk about it.
The "tldr" version of my thoughts is: Yeah, I agree with the guy about the manga not being a way to know the story without playing the game. Whether you're fine with that or not is up to you, but I personally think that, yeah, I would've preferred that the manga didn't need you having played the game to know, but I still really like the manga anyway...mostly because I really like Minato's portrayal...and seeing him smile so much in the manga. I swear he's so funny and my heart melts everytime I see him smile.
Now for the (slightly?) more in-depth version!
Basically, the main reason The4thSnake says that the adapatation isn't so good is because, one, it assumes you've played the game, and two, it isn't upfront about how it tells its story: in nonchronological order. Which, well, yeah, I don't blame him for disliking. I had initially assumed that we would begin with late game, in this case first with the Hange Man Shadow and then a month after that, before jumping to the beginning to tell it chronologically. When it started to jump around, I didn't mind, but I can see the whole "making some of the character arcs weaker" because of that, mainly, as he pointed out, Aigis. And that's not to mention Koro getting shafted.
So as an adaptation to stand on its own, I agree with the guy in that I feel the P3 manga fails in that. Especially compared to Persona 1's manga, where not only did it add extra stuff to the manga, but made it so that anyone who hasn't played the games can basically get the story (I know my friend did that's for sure), making it a pretty good alternative to the game, if not often the one I see most people recommend other people if they want to know Persona 1's story and characters.
Despite that, as I said, I still really like the manga. The way Minato is protrayed is my favorite. He's hilarious in plenty of situations, like his inner thoughts when he introduced himself to Yukari ("I did something out of character!"), ordering a whole butt load of burgers, or that time he was playing a train arcade game and utterly failing at it. But he's still the calm collected Minato we know who cares a lot for his friends, smiling a lot more often than in the movies and I just feel so happy seeing those smiles.
It has absolutely nothing to do with this version being closest to how I geadcanon him, nooooo...of course not.
Oh and also there's more obvious shipping hints of Yukari than Aigis but shhh that's not that important...
Also there are plenty of extra moments that I like, though I embarrassingly can't remember off the top of my head, and OH MY GOSH I liked the finale battle...kaiju sized Nyx Avatar vs. Messiah is something I never thought I'd see but I'm SO happy it exists. Hey it was awesome okay?
And, of course, the fact that by the end, this is the one that has the most hints toward Minato surviving despite all that.
So yeah. Basically I'm glad to have read it and really like it. Would I rec this for someone who hasn't played Persona 3? Absolutely not. But I'd still say give it a try if ya wanna read it. I had plenty of laughs and heart melts reading it.
and if anyone does i'm more than happy to give them where i read it because i know how hard i searched for it
I'd outright just link it but i don't know if linking manga hosting sites would break rules or anything so i won't take my chances
And now to read the Persona 4 manga! Because apparently The4thSnake says it has its own problems and P5 manga adapts P5 better than the anime. Whhich, as someone who's read up to chapter 18 of P5's manga and seen up to ep...6? Dubbed, and loves P4tA, I can say I agree so far with the P5 stuff but am even more curious about the P4 manga now.
